Western Mediterranean cruises emphasise the area on the South and East Coasts of Spain, The French and Italian Riviera, and the islands west of Italy. Some may make multiple stops along the Italian coast, and even a few Greek Islands. Embarkation typically is from Barcelona, Nice, and Rome (really the port of Civitavecchia 70 miles west). Typical ports of call include Villefranche, Nice, Monte Carlo, Genoa, Livorno, Pisa, Sicily, Palma de Mallorca, and Malta, although many touch a few Greek ports like Athens (Piraeus), Myknos, Rhodos, and Santorini. Western Mediterranean cruising begins in late April or early May, and runs through until October. Weather in the extreme ends of the season can be cool; a jacket would be required on most days other than in high season (June - September). In high season, provided the sun is shining, it will be warm enough for sun tanning and beach weather in ports of call, although the focus of these cruises is more on the ports than on the weather. Some ports are relatively close to the centre of town, meaning self-guided exploration is possible and inexpensive. Other ports (Livorno for example) are really quite far from points of interest, and excursions are best arranged in advance or on the ship itself. Given the ports of call, it is best to have a realistic budget of shore excursions so that you are not shocked when you arrive. Europe is very expensive; a comparable tour or independent hotel stay with meals and entertainment would be significantly more expensive than on a cruise.
