It’s easy for visitors to get confused about Camaguey (Pronounced “Kam-AH-gway”).
Yes, this inland city offers, an interesting look at true Cuban culture, complete with historical points of interest, colonial buildings, and museums. The oldest part of town is unique because of its narrow twisting streets that form labyrinths deliberately designed to confuse pirates.< BR>
But that’s not why people go there. Few visitors are looking for the cultural experience; they’re buying sunshine holidays at Santa Lucia Beach 110 kilometres away from the city.< BR>
If you’re a beach person, you’ll be happy there. Santa Lucia offers soft sand, plenty of watersports and good quality diving and snorkelling.< BR>
But if you’re looking for more than sun, sand and sea you may have a problem; the restaurants, museums, shopping and cultural and historic attractions of the city of Camaguey are 110 kilometres from the beach. < BR>
Santa Lucia is home to several all-inclusive resorts but the destination is seldom our first choice in Cuba because of their relative isolation. Having said this, when places like Varadero are jammed, or if you’re on a limited budget, Camaguey could well give you a simple, value-for-dollar beach holiday.
