Cienfuegos, Cuba
Cienfuegos is the gateway to some of Cuba’s best-kept vacation secrets: Trinidad and Playa Ancon.
Playa Ancon is one of the best beaches on Cuba’s south coast. It’s fringed with palms and sheltered by a sandy peninsula and the bay’s waters are warm, clear and quite shallow close to the shore, although coral reefs are fairly close by. By wading out about 100 metres, you can snorkel around coral and rocks to see many different types of tropical fish and even a lobster or two.
The beach is close to Trinidad, which some guidebooks call the finest colonial town in the Americas and which Lonely Planet says is a good choice for a Cuban holiday because it’s not as overwhelmed by tourism as Varadero or Guardalavaca and is visited by tourists and locals alike.
However that relative quiet hasn’t kept Trinidad from becoming one of Cuba’s better shopping cities; so check the artisans markets for textiles, wooden masks and musical instruments.
Cienfuegos, the gateway to the area, will probably strike a chord with history-minded vacationers. It’s the Caribbean industrial port that was once home to the Soviet submarine fleet.
With the exception of Playa Ancon, beaches on the south coast are not terrific, with some hotel beaches having to be modified by man. As a result, the Cienfuegos area is not our top choice for most vacationers.
If you’ve been there before and have seen the hotel, we will be happy to make arrangements for you. And we can’t argue with the price. It’s almost cheaper to buy package holidays in this area than live at home! But, you get what you pay for!
