Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
Situated on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata began tourist development in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a beach destination. Visitors do not actually stay in the town of Puerto Plata, a dusty uninspiring small city, but rather in the tourist areas that lie outside. The Playa Dorada Complex is where most resorts are situated. This secured complex is home to a golf course, three casinos, and several all-inclusive resorts set on a good quality, golden sand beach. Most vacationers stay on their resort for a simple diet of beach, pool, sports, and activities offered by their hotel. Other resorts are situated in other more isolated beach areas such as Luperon 90 minutes west, or the small fishing village of Sosua to the east, where hotels are often situated on spectacular cliffs. In addition, the areas of Cabarete, Playa Grande, Samana, and Rio San Juan, are isolated villages east of Puerto Plata on the north coast. Terrain is tropical and mountainous, giving the area an interesting look. Known as the "Amber Coast", shopping in this area is limited to local arts and crafts, leather goods, and amber jewelry. There is some nightlife in Puerto Plata itself, but most visitors stick to their hotel. Nightlife generally is more lively in the larger resorts. We strongly recommend newer four and five star resorts.
Vast differences in location make it difficult to make a general statement about Puerto Plata, but visitors should expect to be satisfied with staying at their all-inclusive resort. This area offers excellent value for those looking for a simple beach holiday. Depending upon the quality of the hotel and the price of your package, this destination could be a better value than Punta Cana or Cuba.
