City Basics

From the Airport: The Madrid-Barajas Airport is the city’s main international airport. You may access the underground system from the airport to reach the downtown area. The metro line 8 runs to the Nuevos Ministerios station in central Madrid and takes about 15 minutes. You may also take a half-hour taxi ride into downtown Madrid. An additional €5.50 is applied to fares to and from the airport. Look for the official Madrid taxis with a white base and red stripe.

Getting Around: If you would like to rent a car for the duration of your trip, the airport has a variety of car rental companies on site. Otherwise, the metro is a great method, or there are buses and trains that run throughout the city.

Where to Stay

On the weekends, this park comes alive with people taking leisurely strolls, boating, or enjoying the book fairs, concerts, and puppet shows.

The Royal Palace is the official dwelling place of the Spanish royal family. With over 2000 rooms, this palace is the largest in Europe. Visitors may explore the luxurious rooms on a tour and witness the lavish tapestries, paintings, and décor. Then head to Plaza de Oriente square next to it.

The Golden Triangle of Art

Madrid is home to three art galleries, boasting great works in both number and reputation. The three distinct museums each have their own sensibility. The Museo Nacional del Prado houses classic works of Spanish art history such as those by Velazquez and Goya. In the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia you will find works by Picasso and Salvador Dali, but also cinema and photography. In the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza are private collections of avant-garde art, and pieces by Monet, Van Gogh, and Cezanne.
