It’s that time of the year again; the time when the city of Toronto bustles with excitement and anticipation for all the A-list celebrities visiting. There’s a lot to look forward to next week. Let’s face it, who doesn’t enjoy great movies and great company? This is a fun time for everyone! In honour of the beloved Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), we at tripcentral.ca curated a quick overview ideal for your escapade next week.
WHAT TO SEE
Osage County is a comedy drama based on Tracy Letts’ hours-long, Pulitizer prize-winning play. It looks into the lives of a dysfunctional family whose paths converge after a sequence of divorces and funerals. The film promises to be a crowd-pleaser, with big-named celebrities such as Julia Robert, Meryl Streep, Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin and Benedict Cumberbatch at the forefront.

Prisoners is a thriller story by Montreal director, Denis Villeneuve who is known for his Oscar nominated film, Incendies. The story of Prisoners focuses on Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Keller Dover’s (Hugh Jackman) investigation into the shocking disappearance of two young girls. It is a suspense-packed film that continues to generate buzz amongst film critiques.

12 Years a Slave, directed by UK artist and filmmaker, Steve McQueen tells the story of Solomon Northup, a 19th century free black man from upstate New York who gets abducted and sold as a slave. It features a line-up of star-studded cast (Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender) and a potential Oscar-winning performance in Chiwetel Ejiotor.

The Fifth Estate is a dramatic thriller film about the notorious and controversial website known as WikiLeaks which was founded by Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch). The film is set to open the 38th Toronto International Film Festival on September 5.

Mandela Long Walk to Freedom chronicles the inspirational life of Nelson Mandela (Idris Elba) – from childhood through his inauguration as the first elected president of South Africa.

The F Word is a heartwarming romantic comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe as Wallace and Zoe Kazan as Chantry. Besides holding screenings for the event, the TIFF BELL Lightbox also stands as a venue for star interviews and press conferences. So you’re guaranteed to come across several famous faces on your casual drop by the area.
Drake Hotel Sky Lounge
This year, Drake‘s Down the Line Launch Party has a lot of exciting things in store for the crowds at TIFF. With various exciting performances and internationally-acclaimed acts, a 70’s-inspired cocktail list, and the infamous Drake 22 Room turned tattoo parlour, a party here is simply something you wouldn’t want to miss. (Note: Last year, Adams Driver from HBO hit show, Girls stopped by!).
Panorama Lounge
Panorama Lounge is a celebrity favourite year after year, with prior appearances from the likes of Prince, 50 Cent, Bruce Willis, Samuel Jackson & Rachel McAdams to name a few. According to Panorama Lounge Director, Sebastien Centner, “as with every year we expect to have some of our regular celebs drop by and of course some surprises too! We are open to the public most nights, take the elevator to the 51st floor to do some celebrity spotting of your own!”
