I must say, I lucked out and got Row 16, which was the emergency exit seat. I’m 5’7″, but I could have been 7’7″ and still would have had plenty of room for my knees. And now, here are 10 reasons why you need to visit Mexico:

1. Heaping plates of delicious food

I’m vegan, so I eat healthy 99% of the time, but I can’t eat at home the way I ate while in Mexico… it would be far too time consuming and I would need a huge fridge. For breakfast, I had fresh fruit that tasted like they were just picked… I love their fresh guacamole and fresh tortillas. For lunch and dinner, there was always plenty to choose from. No matter what your preference or dietary need, you won’t go hungry on the Mayan Coast, that’s for sure.

2. Hot, hot, heat

It was 38 degrees Celsius in the shade, 51 degrees Celsius when you factor in the humidity.

3. Accommodating housekeeping staff

It was nice not having to wash your own dishes, make your own bed, and clean your own shower. The housekeeping staff was wonderful at all the resorts I stayed at (three resorts in one week), I never had to lift a finger, and neither will you.

4. Great beds!

Every bed I slept in was better than my bed at home. My favourite was the Azul Fives’ king-sized, high bed which had shelves underneath for extra storage. The linens were crisp with a high thread-count, and we had four perfect pillows.

5. Crystal-clear, turquoise water

For me, getting a “fish hug” and seeing Spider Monkeys (the monkeys were in the trees, not in the ocean, haha) were a highlight.

6. Smiling, friendly, happy people

They say Canadians are friendly, maybe we are, maybe we aren’t, but if we are, we sure don’t show it enough. Mexicans are warm-hearted, friendly, and expressive people, which is why tourists keep going back year after year.

7. No stress

The hardest decision to make was: what to eat, what to drink, and what to do with all the free time… Should I go snorkeling? Experience a cenote? Go parasailing? Go shopping? Golfing? Spend some time at the spa? Take a nice leisurely stroll on the beach… or perhaps just nap in a hammock?

8. Different drinks every day

Each resort I visited had a “drink of the day”, no two were alike, and yet all delicious (virgin or with alcohol, you choose).

9. No potholes and no hair-pin turns.

The highway from Cancun down the Mayan Coast was in excellent condition….much better than what we have here in Canada. Renting a car is easy and inexpensive. Driving is on the right, with speed limits clearly posted. The drivers were also courteous.

10. You can be barefoot, day and night.

And the best place to be barefoot was on Maroma Beach… one of the Top Ten Beaches In the World … definitely at the top of my list, if you ask me.

Having recently returned from my fourth visit to the Mayan Coast of Mexico, I’ve put together a list of reasons of what I miss the most. But before we get to that, I would like to mention that I had a great start to my week because I flew with Air Transat’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
