{"id":20509,"date":"2017-10-27T18:46:27","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T22:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/blog\/?p=20509"},"modified":"2020-06-22T16:19:41","modified_gmt":"2020-06-22T20:19:41","slug":"cuba-update-hurricane-irma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/blog\/cuba-update-hurricane-irma\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba update: Island re-opened after Hurricane Irma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba will remain one of the most popular destinations for vacationing Canadians this winter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/vacations-packages_cayo-coco.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayo Coco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Cayo Santa Maria, popular tourist areas hit hard by Hurricane Irma in September 2017, are reporting to be fully functional and operating, after a path of damage closed resorts for several weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The category 5 hurricane, which meteorologists called the most powerful Atlantic hurricane outside the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Seas tore through St. Maarten, Barbuda, Puerto Rico, parts of Cuba, and Turks &amp; Caicos. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of the hurricane, Cuba\u2019s minister of tourism Manuel Marrero made a public statement to have Cayo Coco and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/vacations-packages_00_02_UK_cayo-santa-maria.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayo Santa Maria hotels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among others hit in Varadero, Holguin, and Havana up and running mid-November. All <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/vacations-packages_cuba.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba resorts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are now operating as usual and have recovered from Hurricane Irma damage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div id=\"toc_container\" class=\"no_bullets\"><p class=\"toc_title\">Table of Contents<\/p><ul class=\"toc_list\"><li><ul><li><ul><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><\/li><li><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span id=\"Hurricane_Irma_in_Cuba_what_was_hit\"><b>Hurricane Irma in Cuba: what was hit?<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><span id=\"Cayo_Coco_area\"><strong>Cayo Coco area<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/blog\/cayo-coco-hotels-attractions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayo Coco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw significant wind damage, but the pier between the main Cuba island and Cayo Coco, making clean-up easier. The area\u2019s Jardines del Rey airport did receive significant damage, however. The airport re-opened and saw its first commercial flight land November 1. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><span id=\"Cayo_Santa_Maria_area\"><strong> Cayo Santa Maria area<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayo Santa Maria clean-up was harder, as the main road between mainland Cuba and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/blog\/cayo-santa-maria-vacations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayo Santa Maria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was damaged. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><span id=\"Varadero_area\"><strong> Varadero area<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Varadero saw both wind and flood damage, but also saw clean-up and resort re-openings happen earlier, due to its location on the main island.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><span id=\"Havana_area\"><strong> Havana area<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/blog\/havana-cuba-travel-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Havana <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received a large portion of the flooding felt by the island, due to its low-lying areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While hurricanes are frustrating for everyone involved; customers are inconvenienced and agents are trying to absorb re-booking policies and tour operators are trying to get accurate information on the ground on the conditions of things in the country, a positive output has come from Hurricane Irma hitting Cuba. Work on resort infrastructure following the hurricane gave the opportunity to improve the properties and resorts before the island re-welcomed travellers to the area. Photo: Pax News<\/p><\/div>\n<h1><span id=\"Are_things_back_to_normal\"><b>Are things back to normal?<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flights resumed to Cuba following Hurricane Irma early- to mid-November, with resorts re-opening between November 1 and November 15. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several of our travel agents visited Cuba prior to the November 1 re-opening dates, and inspected hotel properties and checked on hurricane damage, and had the following to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/vacations-packages_00_0O_JY_iberostar-playa-pilar.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iberostar Playa Pilar:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThe hotel is fully recovered, but the beach was damaged by the hurricane at this resort. It has taken away a lot of the beauty, but they are in the process of reconstructing this. The doors have some water damage, and you can tell vegetation was wiped out during the storm.\u201d &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/travel-agent_00_0P_B6_anna-torrefranca.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Torrefranca<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/vacations-packages_00_0N_JA_melia-jardines-del-rey.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melia Jardines del Rey:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThe buildings look good, but the landscaping needs some cleaning up as some spots have a lack of grass. They\u2019re still cleaning the area. The beach is beautiful and swim-able.\u201d &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/travel-agent_00_0P_CU_katty-lam.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katty Lam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Pestana Cayo Coco: \u201cThe damage is still evident at this property, specifically when you are walking down to the beach you can see where all the trees were uprooted. The beach bar was destroyed by the hurricane so they have had to re-build. The water is crystal clear with gorgeous long, wide, white sand beach and lots of palapas.\u201d &#8211;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripcentral.ca\/travel-agent_00_0P_DX_fathia-ibrahim.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fathia Ibrahim<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of resorts in Cuba have re-opened and operational for the 2018 winter season.
