Third time's a charm!

For our third time at this resort we upgraded to a Level room. The rooms are the same as the regular side, but we had no direct view of the ocean, so we petitioned for another upgrade to oceanview and got it as a repeat customer. There was a travel advisory on (later upgraded to a warning) so the place was less busy than usual. The rooms are clean, the beds comfortable and the bathroom well appointed - and it would have been nice to have some hot water in the shower, but it's Cuba. The reso [... read more]rt has new lounge chairs around the pools and the beach and plenty of palapas for shade. As usual the beach was spectacular, with people cleaning out any seaweed each morning. Food was great especially the Cuban a la carte (there was a lamb special) and of course the desserts were delicious and never-ending! The staff were amazing - they had heard the rumours of travel warnings and the oil embargo but carried on regardless. Many of them may not have jobs soon if the US actions continue. It was a little cool and windy for Cuba, so it was amusing to see our Cuban travel rep in a winter coat, complete with fur collar right next to Canadian tourists still in their bikinis desperately trying to soak up the sun while they can. Great for my tennis though.

Amazing resort

This is a great resort. Very impressed. It’s super close to the airport. It’s a large resort but not crowded. Guests were families, couples, older, younger. Fun but nothing crazy. The beach is beautiful and big, lots of chairs, sun or shade available. We walked the beach everyday multiple times per day. The sand is perfect, the ocean water looks like a huge pool. We went in January and had perfect weather, the water was so great for swimming. I wish there were small feet faucets when you exit [... read more] the beach to wash the sand off your feet. Also, people should clean up after themselves, and not leave cups and plates on the beach. It’s disrespectful, I guess only lazy slobs do that. Maybe resorts should stop using plastic cups, people can bring their own travel mugs. The food was delicious, lots of variety, fresh fish, salads—cooked and raw. Breakfast omelettes, smoothies. Lunch, dinner — delicious!! Entertainment was good too. No issues with shortages in regards to alcohol or mixers. They always had gin and tonic! The rooms were very clean, comfortable and practical. No issues. The only minor issue was… I wish the sheets/pillowcases felt/smelled fresher. The staff are wonderful, especially Dannier, Migray (hilarious, we had such fun with her), and Nano at the snack bar. We will definitely return to this resort!!

We love this resort,we will be back next year,it was our third visit and we’re enjoying everything

This is very friendly environment with amazing staff,very clean rooms,food service facilities,beautiful beach.very nice entertainment.Lots of activities all day long. We were visiting all restaurants and I would like to say we enjoyed it very much,delicious food and great service from staff who were serving us. I would recommend this resort to my family and friends.

Cuba

Meliá Costa Rey was a great resort with extremely helpful and pleasant staff including groundskeepers and pool staff. The food was very good and abundant compared to what the locals are able to get outside of the resort. The rooms were great although we had trouble with the AC and damp sheets. Lots of activities if you wanted and beautiful beaches.

Great staff

I had a great time. This was my 5 vacation to this resort .Beach was 5staras usual .Rooms clean ,Patio door hard to open,one call to front desk immediately resolved.Hot water wasn't plentiful. Can beer in room was in short supply, but lots of good alcohol at 5 locations.

Lovely place, pleasant vacation

A well deserved 4+ star resort. Clean rooms, quite good food, lovely beach, nice size pools. Issues, here and there, ( like hard to change beach towels) ... it happened, but all together, it was a pleasant vacation.

Fabulous Resort

Beautiful property, especially the Level, security was exceptional Food, atmosphere, employees the pools , bars. Grounds, all kept very well The bars were well stocked, plenty of choices for food every where on site The only place I will stay in Cuba at the moment Plan to return in the spring

A wonderful resort. Staff cannot do enough for the guest, always happy with a smile on their face. Entertainment staff work so hard and long hours. So many repeat guests . Clean beach and easy entry into the ocean. Will be back for sure.

Melia Costa Rey Cayo Coco

I just returned from the most incredible couple of weeks in Cuba, and I had to share my gratitude! A massive thank you to the entire staff at the Meliá Costa Rey in Cayo Coco. From the moment I arrived, I was met with genuine smiles and exceptional service that made my stay truly unforgettable. The level of hospitality was outstanding, and I really appreciate all the hard work that goes into making guests feel so welcome. I want to give a special shout-out to: Levy, Claudia, Jenny, Bibi [... read more], Elaine, Eliania Rosemary, Nelson, Elvis, Yosiel, and Roberto the new GM of the resort, just to name a few for their cheerful service in the [Dining room/Lobby Bar/etc.] every day Most of all, Ronney Fernandez, my hermana for always going the extra mile from the moment I first met him when it was called the Pullman. Over the last 6/7 years Ronney and I have always kept it touch on a regular basis. I've gotten to know his family with open arms. This visit which is now called the Melia Costa Rey was special. It was considered a surprise visit to see Ronney and meet his family in person. Ronney as usual did not disappoint. From the moment he realized that I had arrived at the resort, even though off for a few days, he immediately jumped into his jeep and drove an hour and some to the resort from Moron where he and his family live. Got to spend some time in Moron with Ronney and his family and was welcomed into their home as family. Memories that will last forever ... Beyond the resort, the hospitality from the people of Cuba in general was heartwarming. The warmth, kindness, and spirit I encountered everywhere I went truly made the trip special. Spotlessly clean

The hotel was kept spotless, the staff at the buffet restaurant are just amazing. The beach was cleaned from seaweed everyday in the morning before eight o’clock. To top it all off we had great weather

Just wonderful! A must do

We very much enjoyed all that they offered! We did level up and found it was worth every penny. We did enjoy the restaurants and the beach wow the beach! So clean no rocks! Wonderful staff! We are already planning our return!

Very nice place

Do not forget this is Cuba, so you can expect surprises! Usually quiet at this time of year, there was 1,000 people on the premises, resulting in some items out of stock ( toilet paper on public premises). Very nice staff, very happy to see Canadians on site. Very nice view , beach cleaned daily Mosquitoes on the beach , bring some repellent if you are intolerant like me!

Melia Costa Ray is very nice resort in Cayo Coco Cuba

We just came back after spending one week at Melia Costa Ray Cuba. From the first minute when we got there and the last day we had an amazing time. The rooms are very nice and clean,buffet and restaurants are very clean,lots of food ,staff is very friendly and helpful . Beach is very nice and has lots of palapas . We definitely recommend to visit this hotel and we will be back there soon. The chef at the beach made delicious shrimp and paella every day,his name is I believe his name is Raule Very nice place to visit.

Stayed at the Level, not sure if we'll return

If you're new to the resort, take a downloaded map of the hotel with you as they don't provide a map whatsoever. There's a large map at the counter that you can take a picture of. After day 2 or 3, you'll get the hang of the layout. We stayed at the Level which has a few perks such as food choices. We arrived around lunchtime, so we went to the family side buffet as the check in person at the Level side told us that all the Level snack bar had were sandwiches which was totally incorrect. Let's  [... read more]just say that it was our first and only time getting food from the family side buffet. The line ups for omelets, fish, meat, etc were long. We were surprised how small the buffet area was for the family side. The next day we checked out the menu at the Level snack bar. WOW!! So many choices and we were never disappointed. We had cheeseburgers, poutine fries, greek salad, pizza and so many other yummy meals. Be prepared to smell and inhale cigarette smoke at the 24 hour snack bar. There are a few open sections of the walls which helps the wind flow however you can clearly smell the smoke. Great for smokers but a turn off for non-smokers. Smokers had the freedom to light up anywhere they wanted to in the main lobby as well. This is the main reason that we'll probably not return to MCR. The Level had an awesome Cuban Day buffet in the Level restaurant Cape Neo. We ate eggs benedict every morning. They were good but be prepared for inconsistently cooked eggs. The whites were either too runny or the yolks were overcooked. We ate supper at the Level Cape Neo three evenings. The menu never changed unfortunately so we looked forward to having supper at the a la cartes for the other four evenings. No complaints for the a la cartes. The staff and food were amazing. To sum up the food, I don't think we would have been happy eating breakfast and lunch at the family side for the entire week. The upcharge for the Level was $1,200.00 for the two of us which was somewhat worth it. The Level lounge was ok, a bit boring at times. I wouldn't say that the drinks were outstanding. The bartenders were friendly and excited to serve at the Level lounge and at the Level beach bar (Buddy's bar). The main lobby had more going on however the wait time to get served at the bar was ridiculous. People butting in line, bartenders not paying attention to people who were there first. I didn't seem like think they had table service. The Sports bar is extremely small with zero bar service. I had gone into the Cigar bar for a margarita as someone in the FB group said that was the best place to order one. The bartender insisted that I buy a cigar and smoke it in order for him to make me a margarita. I told him that I didn't smoke however he insisted a second time. I couldn't believe it. The bartender had a bit of a pissy attitude but I finally got a margarita. It was barely drinkable and not worth the hassling. All the bars were intermittently out of ice throughout the week. The Level side always had cold 'Three Horses' beer in the can and Buddy would send out his bar helper to the beach to get drink orders from the Level guests. The main lobby never had champagne however the Level lounge always had some. Be aware that the bars tend to close 15 to 30 minutes sooner that the displayed time. There wasn't enough shaded seating by the Level side pool. I think there were 6 or 8 wooden bed loungers which were reserved with towels before 6:00am. It was extremely windy at the beach so sitting in a shaded bed lounger by the pool would have been nice but it was impossible. The hotel should install some umbrellas to provide shade for the guests that sit in the regular lounge chairs. If it's super windy at the beach, sit in the back row by the dunes as it really makes a difference. There are no washrooms close to the beach on either the Level or the family side. For the Level side, the washrooms are between the 24 hour snack bar and Cape Neo or at the Level lounge or you can go to your room. For the family side, the closest public washroom is at the 24 hour snack bar. My husband said that the urinals were plugged and the urine smell was disgusting. The ladies washroom was half decent with multiple stalls. Would we return? If the price was good and the Level upgrade charge wasn't ridiculous, we might. We prefer the resort next door as they have strict rules on where people can smoke. The beach palapas are separated by no smoking and smoking allowed. They offer table service in the main lobby.

Amazing resort This resort

This resort, is just fantastic in every way, beautiful rooms,pools,beach,restaurants,people,everyone can’t do enough to make sure you have the holiday of a lifetime,the only thing negative thing is repetitive food menu. This was our second visit here.

Melia Costa Rey Vacation May 10-24, 2025

The hotel was great. Nice bedroom grounds were well taken care of. The ala cartes were excellent. The only concern i had was that the elevator was broken. For those that have mobility issues this would be a concern. The entertainment team during the day were great, as was the shows at night. Meals at the buffet were good. Seafood from mussels, clams, shrimp and fish were excellent. As well as the meat pork, chicken were also good. There was always something to eat.

Highly Recommended Resort - Staff is amazing , Pools and Beaches are fantastic and the food is excellent . Very Very Clean resort . You are able to have the best of both worlds - Relaxation and fun when you want .

Amazing Resort

My partner and I visited this resort April 28th to May 5th 2025. We stayed at the Level side; however, enjoyed all aspects of the hotel. Extremely clean resort, stunning lobby area with a beautiful view of the ocean. Beaches are well kept daily, food was delicious and all staff were extremely friendly. Special shout out to Miguey, Claudia, Yani, Geraldo, Ricardo and Yaris. Wonderful cigar bar too! Nice beach, hotel so-so

Our expectations, based on other people’s reviews for this hotel and our last year’s trip to another Melia resort in Cuba, were probably too high… Disappointed with rooms (e.g. small ants everywhere, including in bed at some point, quite aggressive), buffet food (passable, you will not leave hungry but quality of the cooked food is mediocre, at best) and general state of the resort (a 15yr old working a summer job in Canada will do a much better job at renovating / no green grass to speak of, ev [... read more]erything is parched / pools not clean / beaten up furniture / bathroom doors that don’t close, you get the idea). On the positive side: a very nice beach, new palapas and beach chairs, good selection of drinks, good service in restaurants and bars, good entertainment. I would not go back though, negatives outweigh these positives.
