Almost perfect resort.

We travelled as a family group of 11 from 3 provinces in Canada and had a great time. The food was good and the beach was kept pretty clear of sargassum. I use a mobility walker and found it easy to get everywhere including the beach. There were a few areas that left room for improvement. It would be better if there was more than one spot to get beach towels and also they need more towels because they seemed to run out frequently. An app to book a la cartes would have been a better way to  [... read more]go. The system they have made it difficult to get bookings. And lastly, we didn't like that there weren't doors between the living area, bedroom and bathroom. There was no privacy to get changed after showering. Ok if you are travelling as a couple but not ideal if you are travelling with children or friends.

Very pleased with our stay

Our second visit to the Catalonia was even better than our first. The food is great, the room was large and beutiful with a gteat view and the staff were amazing. We ate at the taco stand every lunch. Had avocado toast for breakfast every morning.

Beautiful resort

Absolutely gorgeous suite we had! The entire resort is immaculate and service is wonderful. We enjoyed the amazing food, beach with plenty of beach chairs, excellent layout for access to everything just steps away. It was very relaxing, white sand and great weather.

Never disappoints - 4th visit

This was our fourth visit to the Catalonia, we can’t find better quality or value. The food is high-quality, smoked salmon in the morning, 5th avenue outdoor lunch, great à la cart restaurants for dinner. A beautiful beach with very little sargasm, plenty of chairs, plenty of palm trees. large beautiful room in building three, overlooking the pool. A beautiful terrace to enjoy a good book and a drink. A wonderful entertainment staff offering yoga, Pilates, spinning at 10am. Salsa on the beac [... read more]h at 12 noon. Thank you Lucerno, Alen, Fabrizio. Nightly shows in the theater, to wrap up a beautiful day. A wonderful café that also offers Mexican chocolate, a real treat. Most importantly, a very happy staff, which sets the tone for the entire resort.

Food allergy alert

The resort itself was nice and clean however, if you have any food allergies beware. My husband has a food allergy to mushrooms and even after informing both the hostess and server in 2 different restaurants on the resort he was still given dishes that contained mushrooms. We reported this to guest services who did nothing other than apologize. I told them that this was very serious and a report should be filed as this could potentially be a life threatening mistake but they didn't seem too c [... read more]oncerned. So beware if you are going to this resort and have food allergies.

Beautiful resort

We liked the tropical grounds, the different pools, the relatively compact layout of the resort, the food and service at buffet and restaurants. Privileged access to Bloved restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner was really enjoyable. The long beach was good for walks. We noticed very little cigarette smoke within the resort, only a little at the beach, which was good. The resort does not provide detailed descriptions of room types, in particular the location of each category of room. We o [... read more]nly learned upon checking in that all Privileged Suites are located on the ground floor on the North side of building 1 and a few in building 4, none of which are close to the Privileged area of beach or Pure Chill bar, which doesn't make sense. Although initially given a room on level 0 in building 1, the farthest from the area we wanted, that room did have a separate living area, i.e. a Privileged Suite as described on their website. We agreed to move the next day to a room on level 1, building 3, facing the pool. We liked the location but the room was one large room with no separate living area. We were told this was also a Privileged Suite which contradicted what we were told at check-in. Overall, we liked this resort very much and would likely return.

Nice Resort

This resort is very nice. It is clean and easy to get around. The rooms are very spacious. The staff are great. For the most part the food was very good and the pools are really well kept. Really good value for your money. The biggest complaint I would have is that the resort allows guests to book the restaurants 7 days in advance. For this reason we were not able to experience all restaurants. The buffet was lovely but they have difficulty seating everyone and this often results in a [... read more] long line up to get in. The room was really nice but had some maintenance issues. Door handle was loose, toilet continued running, shower water temp was not regulated…fluctuated between extreme and cold. At the beach, the only shaded loungers are a good distance from the shore and go quickly. You need to be up early to get these seats. All other beach loungers have no shade but are easier to get.

Amazing resort!!

This hotel is quite modern and kept very clean. The weather was not the greatest, so we did not spend as much time in pool or beach as we'd like. The staff was friendly, though there was definitely a language barrier, especially the staff who served at poolside. Service was great though and the food was spectacular! I would definitely return but found it was a little overpriced.

3rd time to the Catalonia

Once again, the Catalonia did not disappoint. Firstly, the staff is #1. friendly and helpful, the cleaning staff does an impeccable job with very high standards. The buffet, ala cart, coffee shop are all excellent. Yoga in the morning on the terrace, another added bonus! Flying from Hamilton was a cakewalk.

Great well rounded resort!

Had a wonderful time with my friends. Rooms were spacious and comfy. Food was tasty and lots of variety. Only cons would be the difficulty with dinner reservations and the amount of seaweed in the ocean. But the beach was powdery soft! Staff were also attentive and friendly!

Would never go to this chain resort again

From the moment we stepped through the front doors we were disappointed. We were not shown to our room and left to navigate the resort on our own. Booking restaurant reservations was a nightmare and quickly discovered you needed to purchase wine in order to get in. Quite the scheme if you ask me. We paid for an all inclusive trip but needed to pay additionally in order to get in to the other dining options. The resort was understaffed and not helpful. Birthday celebration

This resort is very clean and smoothly run. Everyone was very friendly and you're not accosted by Wildlife or sales representatives. We had an issue with our room not being near an elevator which was a must for us. They were able to accommodate us quickly with another room. There is no smoking allowed anywhere on the resort but the gate to enter the resort is not far from the lobby which is where you can go to smoke. Nice but spa isn’t accommodating for pregnant women

Food: buffet is typical resort standard, a bit salty but decent. Steakhouse, Italian and BLoved were good. Teppanyaki was too salty to eat. Room: family swim up - very clean and spacious. Sturdiness of toilet was questionable (floating) but maintenance was quick to resolve. Huge downfall was that half the swim up rooms are completely shaded and ours unfortunately was one of them so water was cold and not comfortable to use. Grip slippers could have been provided to resolve this but the only option was to “sit on the side and watch” my husband lol Additional: mosquitoes were the worst I have ever experienced in my life. Obviously out of their control. They fumigated one or two days after we arrived and we were able to enjoy 2 days mosquito free before they started to come back. Overall: nice resort if you’re looking for great beach, fantastic service , cleanliness and ok w it being very quiet and laid back especially great for little babies. (I have 3 & 1yr olds and would have appreciated more stuff for them to do but at the same time I appreciated how quiet it was - definitely not a party resort). Not worth the extra money for swim up if it’s not directly in the sun and privilege isnt worth it bc the only perk was one restaurant, an hour of hydrotherapy that you can’t use if you’re pregnant and beach chairs that aren’t much different from the other ones.

Beautiful Resort

everything was very clean beautiful grounds The service was excellent and the beach spectacular. This was my third stay at Grand Catalonia. Drinks were great and restaurants were clean and not much waiting time for meals.

Nice Clean Resort

The resort is beautiful. The rooms are big and nice. The beach is great. The pools are good. However, the food could have been better. At times it was very bland and the only restaurant I really enjoyed was the Italian restaurant.

Best all inclusive I have been to

I have been to the RIU in Bahamas and Aruba, the Catalonia surpasses them both. The food is superior, the service is friendly, courteous, and excellent. The cleanliness of the grounds, your room, your balcony is by far the best I have experience at any resort. This is our second time we have stayed at the Catalonia.

Beautiful Resort

We just came back from spending a week at the Catalonia in Costa Mujeres. Overall, our stay was great, super relaxing. The property is beautiful and well taken care of. The resort is a beautiful blend of modern architecture and lush landscape. We did book the privileged suite which gave us a couple of parks the first being you’re on the top floor with a very large balcony, including a shower and tons of seating. With booking the privileged suite you get access to the beloved restaurant that is only for those guests. The there was good. The menus are not huge, but there are always options to pick from. The rest of the à la carte restaurants in the resort or good I wouldn’t say fantastic. The Teppanyki table was our favourite dinner we had at the resort. The buffet was always good with quite a bit of variety. We ate all of our breakfast there and our lunches there as there were just more options for me. My biggest complaint of the entire trip would be the lack of gluten-free options that were either not clearly marked or nonexistent, especially when it came to desserts not a single pastry cookie or any sweet was available gluten-free. The only desserts were ice cream and sorbet’s and at the Beloved restaurant, I was able to get a delicious Crème brûlée. They did have a gluten-free bread available that was actually quite good but things definitely need to be better marked. If you are full celiac, I feel like you would have difficulties. That being said, I didn’t starve. But I have had better options at other all inclusives. The pools are some of the cleanest I have seen at an all-inclusive resort. I usually never swim in them, but went in several times, the beach is more of our thing. The beach is beautiful, white sand, and not too much seaweed, and it kept pretty clean by the machine that comes by. As far as the water goes, it was a little rough for my liking but it was beautiful and you could walk forever in either direction as the beach is long. We enjoyed the beach more on our excursion to Isla Mujeres. Getting chairs on the beach was not too difficult, but we did have a privileged area with our booking that is roped off. I keep in mind the resort was not at full capacity. I feel like it would be more difficult if the resort was fully booked. The pool area was definitely busier and most loungers were taken up early in the morning. There’s lots of bar options down at the beach plus they serve drinks right to your lounger as well, which is always great. Check in and check out was probably one of the quickest and smoothest we’ve ever experienced at an all inclusive resort. And final note would be the staff, they work super hard and we’re extremely kind in all aspects. Always going the extra mile for anything you ask for. Although tipping is never required we always do at all inclusives. These people work extremely hard long days and the tips are very much appreciated.

Beautiful Resort

The beach was very nice but not a lot of shade. The week we were there it was very windy and we couldn’t really go in the ocean because of the waves. Rooms were suites and very nice. Service was good and food was good as well. There were lots of families so I would not recommend for a couples trip.

Amazing resort!!

Everything at this resort was great!! The staff, the beach, the pools, the service, the rooms, the entertainment, the spas, the gym, the food etc! It is very family friendly! We loved all of it! The only negative thing is the timeshare sales tactics that they use! The lady that approached us said it was a welcoming breakfast she was giving us at one of their posh restaurants and a free massage at the spa. When we sat down with the next person she brought us to, it was exactly that, a timeshare pitch. I feel they wasted our 1.5 hours and we feel deceived. If someone says "no" it's 'no"... stop pressuring. We will know better next time. Also, everything is payable in USD at the resort which is very expensive based on the fact we are Canadian. There should be a Canadian option as well.
