Gran Mathu Rainbow Cayo Guillermo

The resort clean on the outside ,it is an older resort so some needed touch up would help .. The staff were great and friendly..Food quality wasn’t the greatest ..They did have eggs in the morning..Pool patio bar had your staples of snack food ,they would run out product constantly..Night entertainment was great ..The beach is not walkers beach

Amazing resort

This was mine and my husband’s 4th time at this resort it’s an amazing resort with amazing people that’s why we keep coming back to see our Cuban family the food was pretty good for Cuba the infinity pool amazing the beach we didn’t go but a short taxi ride to pillar beach which truly is the most beautiful beach this time we got to go into town to spend the night with our friends at there house had an amazing dinner with them

Amazing Trip

This small resort is amazing, with Cuba the way that Cuba is, I wasn’t expecting amazing but I was so wrong. What the resort lacked in supplies they made up with their kindness and hard work to make everything as lovely as possible. The people that work at Rainbow, go above and beyond everyday for their guests. Rooms were clean, buffet always had something you could eat, and the entertainment was superb.

Nice and disappointing

Upon arrival after a long day caused by a storm delay, we were greeted with a room with no hot water. Lack of hot water became a prominent issue throughout the entire 2 week trip. On the 6th day we finally got hot water. A couple of days later we lost our lights in the room. It took the hotel 15hours to move us to another room, after I occupied the front desk and demanded to be move. They have a lovely pool and beach. The people and workers were wonderful. If you are looking for something really special...

I just returned from an incredible trip to Cayo Guillermo, specifically The Gran Muthu Rainbow. Now, if you're looking for perfection in terms of food, amenities and an easy care free resort, stop reading now. The Rainbow is one of three Gran Muthus in Cayo Coco/Cayo Guillermo and it has it's share of problems, that the other two resorts don't seem to have as much difficulty with, for some reason, that I still want to find out why, such as terrible food (not news), water & gas shortages, electri [... read more]cal issues, basically something is always not working properly, but I knew this before going. Literally everything has to be bought on the black market, which makes life for the people there extremely challenging. But I wasn't going there for the food and I knew about the water, etc. However, if you want to see some of the best beaches in Cuba and want to experience a small, intimate resort with gorgeous rooms (newly built), stunning views and absolutely fabulous entertainment, than this is the place for you. Whether you are part of the LGBTQA+ community or not, it is a very, very special place. Do your research, join their Facebook group, prepare as much as possible before leaving. Bring tons of cash! You cannot use credit anywhere! There are no ATM's, and the bank in Moron will only give you pesos. Bring gifts for the staff please, namely medication, they NEED it! Chocolate is also very much appreciated, as well as so many other necessities, things we completely take for granted. I learned a lot about Cuba while I was there, it is a country I have longed to visit and I plan to go back as soon as possible. Know your history! Ask questions, they love Canadians, sadly we cannot do more to help them economical because of the US embargo, damn American government, it is screwing Cuba again, it has never stopped! I don't about you, but when travelling, I want to meet the locals, I want to learn from them. Hemingway brought Cayo Guillermo to the attention of the world, he's a National hero. Then there's Castro & Che of course, incredible history! If you like this kinda of stuff, check it out!

Very clean and beautiful resort!

Very disappointed that only 2 of the 4 restaurants were open each night. We didn't get all the reservations allowed. The lady responsible to make restaurant reservations with is not the right person for the job....a long ways of being there for customer service. She manages to complicate the uncomplicated. She gives you a date and writes another one and then tries to accuse her co-worker of her mistake when confronted ! We couldn't get reservations but some nights the restaurant was half full and sometimes even less. Unacceptable! ALL the other staff were very pleasant and hard workers.

Different experience in Cuba

Firt the resort was very nice ,spacious room very beautiful,and very clean,the resort itself very clean. The staff not everyone was smilling and the service very slow. The intertainment well it,s a gay friendly resort so we expected the show to be colorful. The pool a little cold,but very clean an nice. As for the food ,never seen that before i had trouble founding something good to eat,i eat the same thing quite every day,but its Cuba. 4th trip to Rainbow doesn’t disappoint

This was our fourth trip to the Rainbow and, we wouldn’t consider going anywhere else in Cuba. It’s like coming home… the staff remembers us and greets us like family. As returning guests were invited to a special dinner at the Indian a la Carre restaurant. For first timers wondering if this resort might be for them: 1. This is a gay resort. This means the guest vibe will be fun - almost all the couples we met were friendly and outgoing. 2. The rooms are superior - each is a mini  [... read more]suite- modern and well appointed. This is a small resort something like 230 rooms. It operates at about 40% capacity ( COVID and post COVID). Rainbow was built in 2019 - so it is pretty much new. 3. The pool is huge - a bit cool but January is the coldest month in Cuba . We never ever have to get up early to go reserve a lounger like almost every other resort. 4. There are 2 beaches - the one in front of the resort is not for swimming - although there is a place to enter if you bring your own snorkel gear. The main beach is between the Rainbow and the MGM Imperial - about a kilometre of white sand. 5. Sailing is good if you like Hobie Cats - but you won’t be allowed to sail solo - mostly because they don’t have a motor boat to go get you if something happens 6. The food is improving since 2021/2022. typical Cuban fare in the buffet and we are now able to serve ourselves again. I always take a bottle of hot sauce . Do not expect gourmet cuisine or Canadian food. you can get fries and cheeseburgers at the snack bar anytime. You will not go hungry - the old Maxim holds true “ you don’t go to Cuba for the food”… 7. The drinks are basic - and they really don’t have premium brands of anything but rum. You can get Havana Club 5 year old at the lobby bar but you have to ask. Cuba Libres are white rum and colas. A Cubata is a dark rum and cola . The Spanish coffees are good - available at the lobby bar and the snack bar at the far end of the pool. Don’t expect top shelf whisky/ gin/vodka/ 8. Tips and currency… Do Not buy CUP under any circumstances. The staff need CAD and the CUP(pesos) have become devalued in the post CUC era. You don’t need to tip for every meal/drink, but many do. Bring loonies and toonies and fives. Once you get to know the staff they will be happy to trade their CAD coins for CAD paper money. 9. Off resort activities …. We booked a cab and driver for the day and drove into Moron. You don’t need to book the offered excursions. But you will need a local guide. The bellmen (Andy or Eris) can help you with this - they are very trustworthy. Expect to pay about 160 CAD for full day with a driver in a modern Taxi. Note - you will need CUP in Moron if you go. Sugar cane factory and alligator farm are destinations. There are few restaurants in Moron to choose from. Don’t get exchange at hotel or a Cadeca ( bank). 10. Highly recommend COCO scuba diving. It is located about a 7 minute drive away in the Gran Caribe resort. They will arrange pick up and drop off at no charge. The front desk or customer service staff (Kitty or Jordan) will call for you. Prices are very good and it’s a safe operation and they provide gear in the price. 45USD for 1st dive if you are certified.

Beautiful LGBTQ resort

Rainbow hotel was a wonderful experience. Beautiful space, pool, nice beach, great entertainment and staff. I could always find something to eat but food is typical for Cuba (subpar). Not too busy when we were there, mainly Canadians - 70% LGBTQ.

My best vacation in Cuba

We went to Grand Muthu Rainbow hotel in Cayo Guillermo. We had the best vacation!! The hotel is beautiful. Clean, ac in the rooms work perfect, food is very good !. The staff are the best. Great staff but disappointing food

The resort is a lovely spot and the rooms particularly with the ocean view are great. Other than some staff wearing masks, there was little evidence of covid protocol. The food generally was just okay. During the week we had two a-la-carte dinners which were great however all other meals were at a very limited buffet and were disappointing. Would love to return but only if the food improves greatly.

No pot of gold at the end of this rainbow

We arrived and had no one greet us or assist with our bags. No one was at the check in and we had to go looking for someone which took half a hour to get someone. Upon arrival at our room our bed covers were covered with pooh i kid you not we took photos . They did eventually come and change the covers and it seemed like we were putting them out of their way to do so. We been to Cuba 10 times so we know what to expect . Rainbow redefined the term inedible food. Morning breakfast consisted or the [... read more] omelette station with choice of egg chees and chives other breakfast option were beans and hot dogs and that’s it. I understand limited choices but that ridiculous. Lunch consisted of grilled cheese hot dogs no hamburger they ran out and fries . Sit down was a chicken leg that was bleeding on the plate you got the same option for dinnerThe next night we went to the Indian where they served up mullet which again was disgusting 🤢. That was all the food options they had. They had no fish as Kitty the customer service rep said all of Cuba is under a fishing ban and no resorts have any fish and resorts are also rationed for food and beverages which they claimed as to why they have to limit guests what they can eat. As far as beverages they had no soda water orange juice tequila sparkling wine and most mixes to make drinks .so you drink wine or beer.They could even make a mojito. many guest said they were starving you can only eat so much pasta and french fries Half way through the trip we transfer to Melia Cayo Coco. The resort manager refused to speak to us and handed the staff member a waiver for us to sign when leaving not to talk about the issues. . We refused .When we arrived at the Melia they had unlimited choices of food No fish ban at this resort or food restrictions like at the Rainbow. night and day difference between food beverages and service. Rainbow did. us in a bunch of people one day for a photo shoot with food and fun that never happened for the paying guests . I truly take the great reviews you see with a grain of salt .Rainbow is a 3 star at best and very over priced . Melia Cayo Coco is a 6 star in comparison .

The hotel was just amazing...the grounds were awesome very clean and very well kept up...the staff friendly...the pool area awesome...the beach was amazing the ocean was amazing...went on a catamaryn boat ride snorkeling saw some dolphins...the food at the hotel was very good...a la carte amazing chinese, tapas, carbinean... BEST CUBAN RESORT I'VE BEEN TO!!

Where do i even begin to explain our satisfaction with this resort... To start off, the staff made our experience what is was. An absolute dream of a vacation. The waiting staff were tentative to our needs, and encouraged us to try new things (food was the best ive had at any cuban resort. Was a smaller selection but everything tasted FANTASTIC.) The bartenders were so personable and knew our drink orders as soon as we walked up to the bars. The gardeners were always at work every day keeping the plants, soil, and walkways tidy and kept green with no dead leaves behind. The lobby/concierge staff knew of our reason for being at the resort (for a brand photoshoot trip) and helped us get the most out of every aspect of the grounds to ensure our pictures turned out the way we wanted them to. Even upgraded our room free of charge to top floor ocean view! And lastly the entertainment team, the best people I have ever met while on vacation. Not only did we meet great friends to keep us company while staying at their resort, we also made life long friends that we chat with every day back at home. They ensured everyone participated in what made them feel safe and comfortable doing while also trying to step out of their comfort zones and have a good time! There was always great music playing while also taking song requests if you wanted to listen to something new! They always had games and dance classes going for you to join in on if you felt desired to! This team went above and beyond for our time here and we got to know each other so personally and deeply that I will forever cherish our time we had until we get to return to visit them once again! The resort itself is so aesthetically pleasing, looks like something out of Tulum or Bali! Very natural and modern vibes! The water is so blue and turquoise, white sandy beaches with cliffs and rocks to take amazing photos for social media (what we utilized them for), and also a private island just a short catamaran ride away (free of charge!!) There isn't enough good words to say about this resort without me going on and on for hours, but just know we will for sure be heading back in the next few months, thats how perfect our stay was. If you're looking for a fun/authentic/nature heavy cuban resort, look no further. Gran Muthu Rainbow will be your home away from home!

Great potential

The resort is beautiful, the grounds, beach and pool. The Cuban staff are amazing, friendly and helpful. They have no issue with the LGBT guests. As a resort devoted to LGTB, it is larger than I expected. Most of the guests were LGBT, there were also straight couples. It was very open and we felt very comfortable being a gay couple. Occupancy was low which I hope was due to Covid. On the less positive side, the hotel manager told us they consider this a party hotel. Unfortunately, this meant very loud parties at the pool until very late, up to about 1 AM. The volume of the music was accompanied by large flashing theatre lights. As the majority of the rooms are overlooking the pool you were subjected to the noise and lights which prevented sleep. There are other areas of the resort that would be much better for these parties. You can see this was a major issue on many of the reviews. We did complain and hopefully they will soon see this as a problem. If you want late night parties, this is your place. To be able to go to a resort this large and be completely open and at ease, this is a great resort. As it is very new, it has some room too to improve, but these are minor overall. Overall, I would recommend this resort.

Fabulous second trip to Rainbow

This was our second trip to the Rainbow, and it did not disappoint. The resort was running at about 20-25% capacity which has pros and cons. Lots of elbow room at the pool bar and loungers, but not enough people for the entertainment staff to put on fun activities. As with most Cuban resorts, the friendliness and commitment to service makes the week enjoyable. Drinks were typical, better of course at the lobby bar. The loss of millions in foreign currency due to the pandemic has severely impacted the ability of the resorts to source imported ingredients. This meant the chefs were challenged to be creative with the ingredients available to them. They deserve kudos for turning rice, beans and pork into great dishes. The buffet had less choice than in 2020 , but truly it didn't matter. Always enough to eat and plenty of alternatives. The Covid protocols were obeyed and sensible. I didn't see a single "issue" all week. Covid test for return trip was easy and well managed. The hotel honoured a large group of returning guests (24 of us) one night with champagne and special menu items. This is of course a "gay" resort. Our group was hetero, but we had a blast with our new friends (both staff and guests). I could call out specific staff for excellent service, but really they are all excellent. I am told the general manager treats the staff very well and as a result, the staff have fun serving the guests and it shows. Rooms are great, we went sailing one day, and scuba dived at CocoDiving (a $10 cab ride away). Highly recommended. 4 of the people in our party signed up for massages and swore they were the best they had ever had. We are planning to go back in a month as a couple.

A TRUE GEM of a hotel. a MUST STAY

So my partner and I just spent a week at the Gran Muthu Rainbow hotel. I can honestly say that it was the nicest hotel we have ever stayed at in Cuba and we have been to about 13 or 13 others. The hotel had just opened a week ago and as such the hotel was pretty l and ight on guests (we were guests 76 and 77) but each day more and more people arrived. Once cleared we were free to wear or not wear a mask as we pleased. WHAT A RELIEF to feel normal again. The staff were friendly the rooms out of this world! The guests were a mix of gay and straight... some Cuban visitors and those of us from Toronto as well as Montreal. We had no issues or felt uncomfortable. The hotel was clear to all locals this was an LGBTQ friendly resort and disrespect would not be tolerated. Overall we had a good deal of fun with everyone... local and otherwise. If there is one thing they will need to work on .... it would be the music. Same playlists got old pretty fast but this is an easy fix and one that many of us brought to thier attn. As they were newly opened, not all the a la carte's were open but the Indian night was and it was insanely delicious. Don't miss out on that one! The buffet was a work in progress but they were working on it everyday! Overall it was quite decent! Overall this was one of our favorite vacations in Cuba ever and we are for sure heading back soon!
