We paid $665 for a week at this resort - all inclusive. As many say, the food isn’t the greatest but that’s what you should expect in Cuba. They have buffets every day which had a decent selection and also had an Italian restaurant and International restaurant you can reserve seats to. They had great entertainment every single night, and it was different every night too. The beach was super close and beautiful of course and the room had no bugs. Overall, it’s hard to hate something with su[... read more]ch an affordable price. Would go there again.

Roc Barlovento: Perfect location
This hotel is not new but very well kept. The location is great ,right in the heart of varadero. The bus is right outside. The buffet is always fresh and hot. The staff are excellent and will help with any of your needs. Its adult's only. Nightly shows. The pools are well kept and the beach is wonderful. We enjoyed the Mexican restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: Amazing vacation
This trip was amazing, Gran Caribe Cayo Guillermo has gone from a good place to spend vacation to exceptionally good service and even more beautiful grounds. Enjoyed it enormously. I have been there quite a few times before, the location is like no other, the beach is a gem, the water so welcoming warm, the people that work there have always been incredible and the new management is making it a memorable vacation experience.

Roc Barlovento: Great low cost resort
The hotel was great, a bit dated but not bad overall. The staff was always polite and friendly. 2 great swimming pools, one a bit more noisy with the DJ speakers close by and the other one is quieter if you want to relax, read etc; just no swim up bars.
The beach won my wife and I over with the white sand and turquoise water. You can see your feet as it is so clear. The food was good but some of the same things almost everyday.
The town is close by as well as a flea market within walking dis[... read more]tance to pick up Cuban souvenirs.
The one thing I did not like about the room was it had 2 single beds rather than a queen or king size bed for a couple. I believe only limited rooms are available with king size beds.

Club Kawama: Good and not so good!
We stayed here for just shy of 3 weeks. We found the staff so friendly and helpful when they could be. Now we didn’t understand why the horrible made drinks only some alcohol was for special people. It isn’t all included as stated domestic and imported included must be a typo???? Only draft beer and slushy overly sweetened syrup drink that they put really low end alcohol. In the print of the inclusive description we never saw anything that said some alcohol not included. Anyway no real juice[... read more] no blender just gross syrup drink. No drinks other than water and coffee in the lobby, where in most hotels is a lovely place to hang out and have some beautiful cocktail or a beer or coffe choices are always welcomed when on vacation.. not here. They could also use a huge or a couple of fans in the lobby the air is so still in there and it is ridiculously hot and no circulation. The internet like everywhere in Cuba is hard to connect but here it is seriously bad most of the time. The bar at the beach is never open! It should be it is ridiculous to have one bar open like that it is a waste and wastage of vacation time walking around and standing in lines for everything! So talking about the snack bar ridiculous it is only open sometimes and the line up for it is sometimes over an hour for a hamburger or grilled cheese. Kind of unacceptable when every hotel has a snack bar and at anytime you can order something. It is not 24/7. Now for the dining room no air circulation at all they never opened the windows and I have never felt so claustrophobic for getting some food. So ridiculously hot and black mold all over the walls from the humidity. And no air circulation at all! How those people work in there is a miracle. They do have a small area for eating outside if you are lucky enough to get a seat.
The night life here is geared mostly for the Russian people we hardly heard any Cuban music the place was full and full of Russians. They drank way to much and a few times we did not feel so safe to be out trying to enjoy an evening walk or look at the entertainment. We saw a woman punching men the screaming and yelling in the rooms it seemed quite violent at times. I get it people drink on vacation but this was way out of control! We locked our doors and were kept up for a few nights in a row with all the commotion doors slamming people yelling people punching each other crying screaming all a little ridiculous for grown adults kind of shame on the hotel for allowing that to happen where the rooms were
Such a great location, the staff was wonderful, the front desk could be a little friendlier, Vivian was the happiest nicest front desk person unlike some of the others that are there, not the most welcoming of front desk people. I work really hard at home and it takes a lot to go away, I do not come to Cuba for the bounty of food I come for the beach, the safe feeling and the people. I don’t come to pay to stand in lines and wait and eat in discomfort...I come to not stand in lines to be felt like I am away relaxing! I won’t return to Kawama I do see its charm for sure however there are other options out there that are above this level I would give Kawama 1 stair! They are behind the times for the changing ways in Cuba way behind the times!! here it is 50cucs for the safe and not returned. That is almost 65 dollars for something that is there and does not need to be maintained your card for the room opens it. First time in about 10 years that I was charged for a safe in an all inclusive. they should have stated where a superior room is on the grounds and what it includes because even if you pay for it you may not get it until you tell them it is not a superior room. We were so far away in some dark building along side a road looking at the ass end of another hotel listening to them doing dishes all night it was that close. Kawama just needs some fresh young ideas to fix this up! It needs more than lipstick it needs some fresh young minds to do this! I so badly want to say so many good things because I wanted to love this place, although it has some charm it isn’t a place I’ll return to anytime soon!

Hotel Plaza: Faded Glory ...
The Hotel Plaza was grand in its day (1909) but the glory has faded. From afar, like an aged lady, she still looks grand - but on close inspection, the glory has faded. If you want to experience Old Havana in its truest sense - you'll be living it here. Hotel Plaza, is in a very good location in Central Havana and that’s the best thing going for it - yet let me start by noting a few things you should be aware of before booking here - the beds were comfortable in this small room, the A/C worked[... read more] fine, there was a TV, a small fridge, a safe that didn't open up, lots of hot water that came after 5 minutes of waiting and friendly, happy staff that didn't speak English well. I tried to call the front desk on 4 occasions - the phone was never answered once. The roof top breakfast area has a fabulous few and we were happy with the food served. House keeping finally showed up on the 3rd day of our 4 day stay. The elevator had to be pried open to get in - and then the elevator door would slam shut on you if you didn't get in quick. There was no hair dryer- even though there was supposed to be one. I believe this is a government run hotel - need I say more? We loved Old Havana and the Cuban people - but some may not like it here. It sure was an adventure.

Club Kawama: A dated but still comfortable hotel
The grounds were well maintained. Only the main pool was kept functional , but well looked after. There were many rooms with clogged toilets and drains and burned out light bulbs. The walk ways could have better night lights. The "Tosca" restaurant was stifling hot without AC ?? There many shortages with over worked staff because of economic cutbacks , but they still offered friendly service , as they say "that's Cuba".

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: Beautiful resort
Our travel dates were from sept 27-oct 4th
This resort, for the slow end of the season was well above any expectations I had before leaving!. I have been to cuba in the past, but usually during a busier time of year. All aspects of the gran caribe were attended to! Rooms, food, staff and grounds keeping.. bravo!! Xoxo
One note to adventurers: because this is an island resort, the 'resort' excursions are at a minimal unless you travel to the mainland! Even as an adventurer myself, I would [... read more]highly recommend this Resort
The resort was beautiful, clean, and maintained. The buffet seemed a bit limited at times, maybe because it was a slower week, however the food was always good! The staff was phenomenal, super friendly, always helpful, and cheerful, we cant say enough about the staff.

Club Kawama: bEWARE
I have been to this hotel before and had some small issues but this time was not good, I understand that in September you will get a lot of locals on the resort but it was a horrible experience. Twice I was turned away from the buffet as "it was done, no food left" but I watched locals carrying massive trays of food out, they were heaped up. I went to go the snack bar and the line up was long and I watched as the locals were getting 6 hamburgers 5 sandwiches and countless hot dogs. I went into t[... read more]own and ate.
Several times we ran out of beer and they had to bring in cans of buck and arrow, ( NASTY), but I watched as workers and locals staying on the resort come to the back door of the beach bar with small white buckets filling them up with beer.
Ice, for 3 days they was no ice on the resort. NONE!!!!!!
I had to ask for my room to be cleaned on 2 different occasions.
One time when I went to go to my room to change, my house maid was sitting outside my room waiting for me, she had gone through my stuff and was asking me for various items as "they are hard to get items",. I was angry, she opened my suitcase to show me stuff she wanted. I understand they don't have a lot, I take ALOT of extras for them but she went too far!.
the nightly entertainment was always geared to the locals, I am sorry they were many other nationality on the resort as well.
I will most likely return but not for a long time!!!!

Hotel Villa Cuba: Nice resort!
Some rooms are not renovated.
Ground and beach are beautiful.
Food is ok , maybe repetitive, especially nowdays you can feel crisis.
Servis is ok, but they are missing a lot of stuff. Mostly of clients were from cuba , South America and Russia , so you will expect noise ,cigar butts and plastic cups allover the place. The worst thing is that SMOKING is allowed inside main building!!?

Club Kawama: A very poor resort.
When an old couple (75 yrs old) takes a two week vacation (all inclusive),is for rest and enjoyment. The management tried their hardest to accommodate us. They gave us a room half a mile away from the restaurant, the beach and all the other amenities. The room was very lively foul of mosquitos, flies, a mouse and I don't know what else. The above I saw for myself. Apparently they said they had no other room available for the evening and we should contact them the next day. finally they gave us[... read more] a room just next to the pool. A very quiet room!!! The one thing it will be very hard to digest was that we had to buy our water daily. No telephones either. We had to go outside the resort to call our son upon our arrival. In all a very disappointing experience . Very rude reception and bar personnel. We are traveling to The island since 1985.This will be our most memorable trip ever.

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: One âï¸
I will start with the positives beach 🖠amazing. Pools were good.
Most of the staff were happy and friendly.
Had a great excursion to Moron etc.
The resort is in total disrepair except the lobby and bar area and buffet.
The rooms need severe help. The response to issues was pathetic. No water sometimes at the whole resort. Stayed in a bungalow, it was dark and the shower had issues, tv had issues, safe was busted. Extra pillows in the closet were revolting. No mini bar as advertised just [... read more]a fridge.
Ended up moving to another room which was better but no hot water. Patio door was broken.
Food was absolutely awful except surprisingly on our last night they had food we could eat. Then came the surveys to our table. That was annoying. They can make good if they wanted to.
Next day it was same old.
They would not serve wine sometimes at the bar claiming to run out but had 40 plus bottles in plain site. The 24 hour snack bar closed at 5 pm every day.
We both got sick from the food and had to miss an excursion.
Simply not as advertised.

Hotel Villa Cuba: STAY AWAY...VISITOR BEWARE!!!
My recommendation is to stay as far away from this hotel as possible. After reading the reviews most were 4 and 5 star review (which I can only assume are fake reviews), I had a bit of hope for this resort, so we booked it for our 20th Wedding Anniversary (HUGE MISTAKE), however this hotel is worse than a rent by the hour hotel in Toronto (at least in Toronto they seem to clean their sheets or so I have been told).
I have been to Cuba (Holguin) prior and was expecting it to be pretty much the[... read more] same, talk about a letdown when we arrived at the hotel it was pretty late in the evening so we really couldn't see the state of the hotel, we were checked into our room 2513, and upon entering we noticed that the walls and ceilings were covered in BLACK MOLD. Given that it was late we decided to wait until the morning to talk to the front desk about being switched rooms as I was having problems breathing due to being Asthmatic. We went down in the morning to switch and got a bit of attitude until I said it was difficult for me to breathe, they then switched us to room 2703, however, in order to move to the room my husband had to stay in the new room while I went to the old room to pack up our stuff and bring it over as we were not allowed keys to 2 rooms at the same time, after we had made the switch we were then given the keys to the new room. The only good thing about the new room was the view. There was still a lot of problems with the room, severe mold on the walls and ceiling, dried blood on the bathroom wall (was there the entire week), blood on the comforter, blood on the sheets, the mattress was more like a box spring than a mattress, the pillows smelled like mildew and mold, the shower head in the bathroom is white and crusty from the water, the tub was supposed to be pink, but was almost black (you didn’t get a shower without wearing your shoes). The in room air conditioner barely worked and it constantly dripped water right in the middle of the hallway, if you weren’t careful when walking (like when you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom) you would slip on the water.
The resort: We were able to finally see what the resort looked like from the outside and all I can say is it is falling apart, and no one is doing anything about the repairs except to slap a coat of paint over the mold and state that they are refurbished rooms. If you walk out of the resort down the ramp towards the pool all you can smell is the septic system (you can’t flush toilet paper down at this resort). There are many areas around the main hotel that smell like urine, this is because parents tell their kids to just pee against the trees or in the grass rather than taking them to the washroom. The resort washroom, if you must use one outside of your room I suggest using the washroom on the 2nd floor heading towards the buffet, it is the cleanest of all of them. Stay away from the main lobby washroom (4th floor) this washroom doesn’t seem like it is cleaned more than once a day and the bins are over flowing with dirty/used toilet paper.
The pool: while looks beautiful and has plenty of chairs for suntanning (about 70), there are only 7 umbrellas, there are 2 sections where there is shade under the palm trees, however on day 3 there they cut all the leaves off of 2 of the trees leaving only one spot for shade. There is no swim up bar which in my opinion is a good thing, however you still have many people, both adults and kids staying in the pool from open to close 9am to 7pm. The water in the pool was always clean and clear and while it was very warm water, it did make you feel refreshed in the hot sun.
Just a side note: They spray pesticides from a plane once or twice a week, this plane ends up dropping the pesticide into the pool which people then swim in.
Buffet Las Dalias (the main buffet): I can only say one thing about the food STAY AWAY. The level of cross contamination is insane here, they have one set of tongs, which they use to pick up fish, beef and pork with, they then it cook it on a grill and serve it to the customers. I had them cook pork (well done) and when it was put on my plate it smelled sour. The buffet consists of the following items, 4 different types of buns, 4 different types of bread loafs, 2 types of pasta including red sauce (very very sweet) or a white sauce (no flavour) and you can add mushrooms, onions, cheese, peas, tri-vegetable mix. There are 3 to 4 types of cold meats, 4 types of cheese. Vegetables consist of cucumbers, lettuce, olives. There are a few seafood selections (not sure of what type as I don’t eat it). On the hot buffet, there are 3 types of rice, a beef hash (ground beef and vegetables in sauce) fish, pork chops. There is also ice cream and a few desserts. Just consider that in order to get any of the food fresh you would have to go into the buffet the minute it opens as they run out of food constantly there (according to staff there is a food shortage). If you don’t like to eat early you will have slim pickings of what you can eat and most of it at that point has been touched by other people. People I met there choose to go into town to purchase their meals which says a lot about the level of food since they were willing to SPEND extra money just to eat.
The pool bar/snack restaurant: This is the best place to fill your drinks if you wish to get slammed, in a 34-ounce bubba, 16 ounces of Rum, 14 ounces of another liquor, 2 ounces of juice and some ice. The best drink hands down were the non-alcoholic frozen lemonade. Be prepared when waiting for a drink to be aggressive as the people will just keep pushing in front of you, if you tip the gentleman working behind the bar, he will remember your face and will actually serve you over the rude customers. Around the back of the bar is the snack counter most of the time the only thing you can get is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, they started to add eggs to the mix on day 3 there. On day two of our trip they had hamburgers, these were absolutely delicious they are served to you with cucumbers and cabbage add a bit of their “ketchup†and “mustard†and you could live on these if they offered them regularly, but sadly we never saw them offered again.
The beach bar: We only visited this bar once, it is just a few steps (maybe 60) from the beach, the drinks seemed decent and the staff was friendly. Just outside of this there was a “booth†where they were selling rum & coconut drinks out of the actual coconut (not sure cost didn’t buy one).
The Beach: Hands down the best spot at this resort. The beach is crystal blue with white sand (beware it gets very hot during the day will burn the bottom of your feet) very clean. There are plenty of lounge chairs and lots and lots of shade. The guys that operate the included items (kayak, paddle boats, catamarans) seem friendly, they will try to push a snorkeling trip on you for 20 CUC’s each person, once you decide that you won’t do it, they really aren’t that helpful. I tried twice to get on the catamaran and both times was told they were closing one was at 4pm (apparently closing due to Thunder, the other was a 12pm, and this time the guy was closing for 1.5 hours for lunch) We took out a paddle boat and were told we could use it for 30 minutes but not even 10 minutes into it we were being told to bring it back in as they were closing. My husband was able to take out the Kayak twice and really enjoyed it. There are very few fish at this beach and the few there are will follow you as you move around, it seemed like a sort of tag game with them.
The Bistro: This is an ala carte menu restaurant, while the staff is very helpful, they have once lady who seats you and takes your order, another younger lady who serves your drinks and cleans up your plates and a gentleman who delivers the food and gives you buns and butter when you are first seated. We went to this restaurant to celebrate our Anniversary (prearranged with Dania public relations). The staff decorated the table beautifully with pink ribbons, beautiful white flowers, silver stars, rose petals and white hearts. Both my husband and I had the cream of asparagus soup, the pork in fruit sauce (onion gravy) and the chocolate cake for dinner, they then surprised us with a beautiful cake that we were able to take up to our room after dinner. The soup was amazing, my pork was served to me pink and when I say pink I mean there was still blood in it, this was sent back to be cooked further, the pork is served with one table spoon of real mashed potatoes and one table spoon of mashed sweet potatoes. Hands down this was the best meal we had eaten at the resort.
El Cononial (Lobby Bar): This bar is a quiet bar, they have live music in the evenings, you can also get flavoured water here (coconut, papaya and cucumber). The bartenders here are a little stricter when pouring the alcohol so you won’t get smashed off one drink. Here your drinks are served in glasses and you are not supposed to take them away, if you do just remember to bring the glass back.
El Bamboo (Asian style ala carte): didn’t get to experience, we were not able to get a reservation.
Coffee bar (main lobby): this is where you get all different types of coffees, the closest coffee we found that we could drink which didn’t taste and look like tar was the Americano. In the morning they also serve donuts at this location.
Overall: This is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in and I have stayed in some pretty bad ones. I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone as it is in dire need of repairs and quality control for the food.
