Starfish Cayo Largo: Great resort

I love this resort but there is a major mosquito problem in lower rooms as well as evenings around bar. I would suggest that they dry up the water closets beside the rooms. I would open them to allow them to dry. They are a mosquito magnet. The beach needs to be cleaned up.

Villa Natura: Ok but nothing special

This resort was not bad but it was not good either. there is no beach but you can take a short walk and use one of the other resorts beaches which are ok or you can be herded up like cattle to be taken to the marina hop on a fairy to go to a very nice beach but this usually takes an hour each way. The bus drivers on the way back make you wait until they are ready to open the bus doors to let you in. (even though they are sitting in their waiting. The bungalow rooms were o very dark due to i [... read more]t being all wood. the cleaning staff do not do a good job regardless of the tip you leave. The food is ok and plenty of it. you will not go hungry. The bar tender will look right at you and make you wait until he is ready to sere you. This resort is very quiet so if you are looking for a place to relax and unwind this is the place to be. It served my purpose but I do not see myself returning to this resort. The front desk guy is slimy and will tell you what he thinks you want to hear but then does not deliver when you show up to hold him accountable for what he says. The wait staff are friendly and helpful. the resort has some potential but the grounds keeper spend most of the day sitting in the shade making flowers. This resort also caters to the French speaking crowd.

Villa Natura: Villa Iguana is not what we expected!

This was our 7th trip to Cuba as a family so we have some context in terms of what a decent resort on this island should be. I will start with the positives. Villa Iguana is a dated facility but is well maintained. The rooms where clean, although infiltrated with a variety of ants (which is not uncommon). Staff really made the resort and were amazing, helpful and friendly. The food was decent. A must do is the visit to the nearby real Cuban beach which is accessed by a free shuttle from the  [... read more]resort. This beach is only 6 km away from the resort. The weather ... well it was what you can expect from Cuba - hot!! Also, the airport was very close to the resort which was great in terms of travel time. Now the areas for improvement. Fly management - there were an unbelievable amount of flies at this resort both in the main bar/snack bar area and the restaurants. You were constantly swatting flies away from your drinks and food. Although staff attempted to cover most of the food with saran wrap presented at the buffet, flies managed to infiltrate. Spray bomb was used around the entrance and food stations before customers entered the restaurant in an attempt to control this problem (this practice definitely turned me off eating the food). I would recommend that they get some sort of pest management expert in to provide some sort of plan to help address this problem. Cooking staff definitely require some food handling training. At the grill/fry stations cross contamination (between cooked and raw meats) was the common practice. Food was also handled by bare hands which were not cleaned even after staff were wiping/cleaning stoves and countertops. The Pizza guy was observed drinking straight rum during his shift daily and perhaps was one of the worst offenders in terms of food handling. The Beach was non existent and one could not go for more than a 100 metre walk without being interrupted by rock outcroppings. I understand that the beach was somewhat destroyed by the recent hurricane activity which is unfortunate and not the resort's fault. What made it worse, is that the only part of the beach that was decent was dominated by parading naked people. Just to give you a sense of demographics at the resort, there were a significant amount of seniors and a notable contingent of gay persons (which I don't have a problem with at all). There were very few young adults and a small representation of middle aged people. This mix was not typical of other resorts we have visited in Cuba. I left that we overpaid for this trip. The resort is more like a 2 to 2.5 rating and if you can get it for around $700/week all inclusive then it might be worth pursing. This particular resort seems to be 10 years behind other resorts in Cuba. I would recommend a resort in Cayo Coco or Cayo Santa Maria over Cayo Largo for the above reasons.

Villa Natura: Still a happy place for a holiday - but

Love the staff and they do try hard to please but think maybe next time to Cayo Largo I would go to Hotel Pelicano. Iguana just hasn't been able to undertake the ongoing maintenance and the flies and mosquitoes were VERY annoying especially in the dining room where something as simple as fly papers would really help. They did fog the entire resort every night but the e environmental impact and impact on our health was dubious! The food is basic but there is always something edible and tasty.  [... read more] Really must say how friendly all the staff were and it should be noted that the resort is very gay friendly. The resort's beaches at the moment are minimal as the wide beaches have been eaten away over the last few years but most of the hotels in the area do have some clothing optional areas which is an attraction but may not be everyone's cup of tea. Oh well there are lots of other beach areas for the textile people. We did visit the Pelicano which does have some children but outside of March Break they seemed bearable and the food was a lot nicer and the facilities more updated. I have seen comments from others about the tipping issues at this hotel but I didn't find those comments to be in line with the service we had while visiting.

Memories Cayo Largo: Quiet resort, cats included!

The perfect hotel for a quiet, chill, relaxing vacation. Rooms are pretty standard for Cuba, service is excellent, food above average. Beach is narrow but beautiful and not too busy. If you're looking for more calm than party atmosphere, this is the place for you. If you like cats, even better! There are plenty of felines eager for attention. It was fairly easy for Mom, who walks with a cane, to get around. I would definitely recommend this resort.

Villa Natura: Lovely gem of a resort!

I had a wonderful time in Villa Iguana. It was a perfect relaxation experience. Access to miles of white sandy beaches and wonderful service throughout. Do take advantage of a sunset massage for a fraction of what it would cost back home. Food was great! Amazing fish.

Starfish Cayo Largo: There's just something about this place!

We've been here too many times now to recall the actual number. It's true that the infrastructure is ancient, sometimes there's no hot water, the food selection is limited, they run out of stuff rotationally . . . yes even beer or red wine. But we still go back; the rooms are tired but kept really clean. Food selection is sometimes limited but usually cooked very well. There are a lot of repeat guests because the staff are amazing. Starfish Cayo Largo: good resort for the money

been several times to pelicano. Aways a good time. No crystal(cuban beer) but Sol(mexican) a good substitute. Staff is friendly. Like walking from one resort to another to check progress each time we come. Ask other tourists how they like resort and most due and would come back if it's their first time.

Memories Cayo Largo: Tired resort overun with cats

Pro's - Nice beach, great weather and lots of chairs and space. Super quiet and relaxing, just 10 min from the airport. Typical Cuban food. Great pasta, omelettes, toast and jam and roast chicken. Con's- most of the food comes from a jar or can, including fruit and vegetables. None of the open food was covered even with plastic wrap and the flies were on everything. Soooo many cats with the smell of cat urine in the buffet and wooden walkways. Many of these cats have infected eyes and beg fo [... read more]r food at the edge of the restaurants or wander in and clean up the floors. We were told that a few cats were brought to the island to rid it of lizards but no one thought to spay or neuter them. The staff seemed very unhappy The rooms really need some attention, especially the bathrooms, and electrical. We had to move rooms because our first one had no power in the main room unless you manipulated the plug.

Starfish Cayo Largo: meh

the geography is stunningly beautiful. the beaches are nothing short of amazing. highly recommend renting an ATV or scooter and exploring the area. ocean is magnificent and lots of wildlife to see in the water a safe distance from the beach. the resort is tired, dated and weak. the only pool is very old and has a liner that is ripped in more places than one could count. in the places where it is ripped, behind the liner, lots of green mystery goo. no central bar or meeting place, not mu [... read more]ch of a community feel to the resort at all. staff is decent, if you are tipping. if you don't be prepared for the cold shoulder. explored to resorts adjacent to ours and found the conditions and services to be very similar. talked to several couples from other resorts, that were exploring the pelicano or while we were at the other resorts, and they had the exact same experience and feedback as ours. food is decent by Cuban standards, but not great by any stretch of the imagination. the rooms are clean and orderly, but obviously dated. not much effort has gone into the infrastructure and it shows. we went without hot water for 5 of the 7 days we were there. no effort or explanation was made with this deficiency. stairs to our second story room were rikety, borderline dangerous. it's not a bad place, but absolutely overpriced for what it is. we will travel to Cuba again, but definitely not to Cayo Largo

Memories Cayo Largo: Our favourite Cuban resort!

This was our third stay at Sol Cayo Largo. It is our favourite Cuban destination. The staff are friendly and the accommodations very nice. The food is quite good also. But the best feature of this resort is the excellent beach. It has a large clothing optional section as well!!! Next year we plan on going for two weeks!!!

Grand Memories Cayo Largo: Great for the price

For the price, you can't ask for much more. Rooms were a little worn but decent, resort and pool were kept clean. Staff very friendly. Never very busy, so no need to fight for loungers at the pool, or line up for food. Food was OK, but you don't go to Cuba for the food, do you? Buffet selections and an omelet station in the morning, pasta and pizza stations at night. There is no beach on the resort to speak of, which we knew ahead of time. If you walk 5-10 minutes down the road behind the re [... read more]sort you will come to the next resort, Villa Iguana, which has something of a beach - still very rocky to get down to, but there is a really nice guy named Omar who works the beach there and he will help you find a spot and pull up a palm umbrella and a chair (give him a tip and he'll reserve a spot for you the next day!). As you walk along this road there is a "beach"-side bar (with no real beach right now) that is right on the water and still part of Bella Isla resort, and it was never busy. We didn't discover this until the end of our trip and wish we had earlier as it was a nice, quiet place to relax with a drink as the sun goes down. There is also a free bus/boat to Playa Sirena, which is well worth the trip. Between the bus and the boat it will take you about half an hour to get there, but it is worth it - beautiful white sand beach that goes on and on, with shallow turquoise water and never too busy. There were little bungalows in the Bellarena part of the resort that were much, much nicer than the general rooms and had a private hammock and loungers on the patio. Also the restaurant and pool in this part of the resort is nicer too. If you have the opportunity to upgrade, do it! I don't think it costs much more than the regular rooms, I wish we had upgraded. Make sure you're booking the bungalow at Bellarena though - they call the rooms in the general part of the resort bungalows too. Word to the wise: DO NOT FORGET BUG SPRAY!!!!! All in all, we were looking for an inexpensive getaway in the sun, and we got what we wanted. Thank you Bella Isla resort.

Memories Cayo Largo: A relaxing environment

Villa Natura: Endroit magnifique !!!

C' est très propre , la nourriture est excellente , le personnel est souriant , attentionné et très efficace !!! La plupart se force à parler français !!! Pas de plage mais , transport gratuit et très bien organisé pour passer du bon temps à 2 magnifiques plages !!! Température extraordinaire !! Semaine inoubliable !!!

Starfish Cayo Largo: Nice and comfortable. No hot water all week. Workers were friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean. Beach is amaizing. My 6th time here and the food could have been better but always something ok to eat. Pasta bar is excellent.but always a huge line up. Mosquitoes are horrible. I got over 60 bites in each leg. They spray but dosent help. Legs swelled up. Scratched the skin off they are real bad this time. Must bring the best repellant and put it on for the evening. Weather was 27C to 30C no rain for 7 days. .

Not a bad place to go for the price. I would recommend to vacation here for a family vacation. This island has the best beach this year. White sand and lots of it. Beach bar. It was amazing. Green flag every day this trip so good to go for the beach as waves were awsome

Villa Natura: Our 10th trip to Cuba, 4th in Cayo Largo and 2nd to Villa Iguana

We like the simplicity of the place and it's very good for the value as we are going back to Cuba in July/August. The people make this place and we feel safe! We love Cayo Largo. This time we walked from the Sirenas beach back to the hotel. Next time, i'll bring a hat and better sandals as we had to climb a little!

Starfish Cayo Largo: The good, and the terrible.

We love Hotel Pelicano - in fact, this was our 4th stay there. The rooms are a generous size, clean, and the beds are comfortable. Having sent a request for a specific room a month or so prior to arriving, we were very happy that we got it! Check in went smoothly, except for the fact that the bus took off with our carry-on bag. We stay on the CO side, which has been relocated to the west side, closer to the Sol...not much walking back and forth for exercise! The staff, as usual, were friendly, and a few were still there from our last 3 times. They seemed genuinely happy to welcome us back! Now, the nitty gritty. Why, oh why, can the kitchen not manage to keep the buffet food hot? Is the water under the food trays not kept hot by electricity? Other than our morning omelette, and pasta on our last night, not ONCE did we have anything that was even luke-warm! For breakfast, the "hash browns" tasted like they just came out of the fridge! I can't even comment on dinner! This has certainly changed from our previous visits. We will continue to visit Hotel Pelicano every once in a while, but I think we will start exploring "mainland" Cuba for the next few trips.

Villa Natura: VERY PEACEFUL RESORT

Returned from vacation Feb 3 2019 from Iguana 4 Adults all 55 plus The Beach is gone but a 2 minute walk and you find yourself on an adjoining beach Beautiful White Sand The sound of the waves are memorizing. Perfect for a couple of hours strolling down the beach. Saltwater pool - perfect for laps- never crowded. The resort was clean and comfortable. The food was very good - lots of choices. The coffee and the drinks where awesome. Service staff very polite and accommodating. Very close to the airport so no long bus ride. The airport was not crowded . I would recommend this resort to fellow Cuban travelers. You will not be disappointed.

Villa Natura: Just what the doctor ordered

This was our third time in Cayo Largo and second staying at Villa Iguana. Our check in was quick and friendly as were any dealings with any all staff members there. Three staff members actually remembered us from last year (and believe me, we are so low key that it's not a case of "OMG...I remember those two") The older gentleman at the bar remembered I brought some baby items there last year and coincidentally his his son just had a daughter and even remembered my drink. Villa Iguana isn't luscious in foliage, the rooms aren't swanky, and yes, you have to walk 5 minutes to the beach next door, but the food is great, the people are amazing and it feels like home. We doubt we will ever go elsewhere. I can see if you're younger and need more to do that you might be bored there on resort and would need to venture off to find your entertainment, but if you are just looking for peace and quiet and a good relaxing time, I can't recommend this enough!

Memories Cayo Largo: Relaxing vacation

We stayed at hotel Sol Cayo Largo from Jan 26 till Feb 3rd. This is our second time at Cayo Largo and we'll be definitely back again. Hotel is old but well maintained and clean. Food was OK just one small thing - not much self service at the main restaurant which causes line-ups. Beaches are amazing despite ocean took a big part of it Sirena & Paraiso are still the best in Caribbean.
