Not impressed with this resort. They market themselves as adults only but it is part of a much larger complex which is for all ages. In addition there is only one restaurant in the adult section so you pretty much have to dine with tons of kids around. Also they don't take reservations in advance so you have wait Atleast one hour for a table. Complete waste of time on a precious holiday. Go the royal hideaway by occidental resorts instead which is also in the Maya and is only for adults!

90% children's resort, all adult area very limited
All adult area just a small area and poorly designed area and pool. All the restaurants and buffet are in Children's areas, they have best areas and pools. Need to have Oceanview room to get nice room and high up to see over buildings, swim up rooms a waste of money since you face buildings everywhere. Very little green areas, mostly buildings. Resort looks like a Shopping Mall.

Great resort, atmosphere, service and food!
This is our first trip to a Royalton Resort and we will definitely check out more! The resort turned one year old while we were there - it's beautiful. For such a large resort, we were never short on pool or beach space (although there was the ubiquitous race for/saving of chairs), and we never had to wait long for meals, at bars, etc. The buffet is astounding - and I'm picky about food! We went to a few of the a la carte restaurants and had great experiences in all of them. And great selection [... read more]at the bars (I'm a whiskey drinker, which is usually not a good thing to be on Caribbean and Mexican vacations)! Truly top notch service everywhere - all of the staff were friendly and helpful in our experience. The spa is beautiful, the fitness centre one of the best I've seen in a resort (I would have loved more free weights, but hey, it was a vacation).
Only a couple of negatives:
- The beach is beautiful, but the water was really rough and filled with seaweed while we were there in late February (certainly not a problem controlled by the resort - global weather patterns more than likely), so keep this in mind if you REALLY prefer to be in the ocean over the pool - I normally am hands-down an ocean person, but the pools were pretty great here so that made up for the seaweed. :) Plus, the beach bars were fantastic - great personalities and great service.
- If you have any mobility issues, there are some areas with uneven/sloping ground, bigger than typical steps, and not as many railings as you might like to see. But all of the restaurants, pool areas and other public areas are certainly accessible. The resort was working on repairing little areas of settlement/uneven concrete while we were there - but this wasn't obtrusive at all.
- We attended the vacation package presentation - while the people were great and polite and helpful, it did take a little more than three hours. If you think you're interested in buying into the vacation package, then go for it - but in future I will totally resist the lure to attend these.

Nice place
Very nice rooms
Small issues w restaurants being slow w meals. Seems like management was still working on staff preparedness. This resort is relatively new and I would suspect the management will have the kinks worked out by the time we return

Second visit not as good as the first
Our second visit to this resort, things have changed GREATLY, and not necessarily for the better. Quite simply:
They now have a "black diamond club" you have to buy or get in the HIDEAWAY adults only section that you didn't have to get before. We asked for an upgrade on arriving and were told not possible anywhere! Not good PR to be sure. If you don't get it;
1. No bathroom robes,
2. No premium booze,
3. No butler,
4. No a la carte reservations!
Many guests didn't realize this and stood in line[... read more] at restaurants trying to get in they were very upset, while the Black diamond people had their butlers get them reservations What the ??????? Or you could buy a 100 dollar+ bottle of wine and get a reservation! We don't like this kind of attempted manipulation. We paid for an Adults only vacation and had to eat at the buffet with the hordes of kids!
Our Adults section restaurant "The Dorado" was frequently closed for various meals/days and so it became necessary to brave the hordes at the buffet or upset off couples who didn't/could get reservations at the remaining open restaurants. We didn't pay for this kind of treatment.
Time-sharing people are crawling all over the front entrance, beware! Because we knew of the strategy of getting us to visit them at so called mandatory "meet and greet" session from the last visit, we chose not to attend! Guess what? for 4 days, every time we we passed through there! Ran the gauntlet of these people. They even had it on the TV under guest account that we had to go to see them. Outrageous!
The adult hideaway pool had the most juvenile "rage type pool party" on Christmas with a DJ of some description, playing NOISE and blowing soap bubble in the pool for the drunken young folk. Okay... but for 2 hours? not very Christmas-like if you know what I mean.
Now the food was very good in all locations. Its perhaps the strong point of the Hotel. That and most of the staff. They are all equally good and go out of their way to be helpful.
Some notables were;
Fernando at the Hideaway Pool
Michelle at the Dorado front desk
The chef at the Dorado, Sorry I can't pronounce his name but he was a jewel.
All in all, we had hoped that all the construction issues/noise that we endured the last time we stayed there would be over and would not interfere with a nice kid free vacation at Xmas. Sadly, this was not the case for us and we will look elsewhere for our 5 star needs. This is not a 5 star "adults only" hotel. We consider our two previous stays at the Le Blanc as 5 stars, not this hotel.
Cheers

Fantastic Stay
Its all about the people, the food and service. Although it is a big resort, the layout and the way it is divided hides this very well. Would return in a heartbeat and actually planning to do so next year.

Amazing food and drinks
Hotel is new but have some construction issues. Room are amazing new decor and modern style. Beach have lots of sea weeds. Pools are awesome with nice waitress and bartenders ask for drink and they will make for you whatever you want. But the best was the food everywhere especially at hunter steakhouse. Snacks and drinks are at every corner. Very nice lobby and grounds but it's very separate from life. If you want explore it's almost nothing except mangrovers. Taxi to Cancun or different cities [... read more]are expensive. It's very good place to just sit and relax.

Palatial Resort
If your a beach person this is not the place for you. On a calm day the water is a murky grey color at best and on a windy day there is a lot of seaweed on the shore. They do there best to keep it clean. As far as the construction / repairs that have been ongoing this should be finish shortly. The resorts looks amazing. This was my second trip to this resort this year and I've notice many improvements. When booking try to get ocean view so that your room doesn't face the mangroves...the odor of [... read more]stagnant water and lots of mosquitoes. You tend to stay in your room and don't venture out to the balcony. Recommend 23 percent deet in your repellent. Other than that the rooms are great as well as the service. Plan to gain a few pounds ...food is great. There are a number of pools to chose from so if your not a beach person the could be a place for you.

One of the most Amazing Resorts
The hotel was beautiful and the service was impeccable. Everything was so clean with many workers on site working hard.
The hotel was clean and well kept. The gym had more then enough equipment needed to accommodate the guests for all types of workouts. One of the nicest I have seen on vacations not to mention the most beautiful roof top tennis court. Well done.
The only let down was the construction in the middle of the resort.

Meh
Decent resort because it's new. Looks nice now but workmanship is extremely poor, this resort will deteriorate very quickly. Food is good in some restaurants and not so good in others. Some staff is amazing while others have horrible customer service skill. The value depends on the price which seems to fluctuate greatly. My decision to return would be largely based on the cost.

Will be returning again and again .....
My husband and I had an absolutely amazing time at the Hideaway at The Royalton. The staff all went above and beyond their call of duty. Our butler's Dominguez and Aldo were friendly, And helpful in every way.
I did hit fall and cut my head open and the lifeguards "first aid" and staff had me back to the fun in no time.
The food was great!! Make sure you get your butler to make you a reservation for the cooking show at ZEN.. IT'S A MUST!!!!
The staff/ resort made our special day (husband's birth[... read more]day) a fantastic and fun day. The room was decorated, the bsth filled and ready. . my husband and I were overwhelmed at their attention :)

Disappointing
The hotel overall is great, the food is so so! But if you book the Adults Only " Diamond Club", it is disappointing - the pool is full, no where you can find a empty chair everyday, even though you paid more as Daimond Club.
The managment is horrible, I booked Ocean view Juccuci room, but I was placed in the swim- up room for two days, I had to move for two consecutive days before I could have the room that I booked. The worst is that I only booked four nights vacation there, the misktake of th[... read more]e management wasted my two valuable days and ruined my vacation.

Very nice resort
Very nice accommodations and a very nice resort. The rooms were spectacular, and the service was good. In my opinion the food was average, as I have stayed in the area before and had better food. The service was good. The beach area was average, as the water going into the ocean was very murky and not clear at all. Not good for swimming. If you have a need to go into the ocean, I would not recommend this resort.

Not yet a five star
The resort was very nice and the food was good. A little disappointed at the variety of selections on the menu at the a la carte restaurants. Paid for the diamond club but did not feel that there was any benefit. Seen our butler at check in and was very nice but gave him a twenty and never seen him again the rest of the week. Took us three days and many phone calls to get an ice bucket. I finally flagged down a fellow stocking the fridges and got him to get us one. Restaurant reservations could [... read more]only be made at 6pm or 9pm which we found out later that they weren't busy at those times anyway. We booked the honeymoon suite and that was very nice. We have a rooftop jacuzzi that we used lots. The "upgraded" diamond club room service menu was exactly the same "word for word" as the regular room service menu that had very limited selection. I don't want to sound like a spoiled brat cause we are definitely not like that but we looked forward to this long awaited break and paid the extra money hoping to get pampered a bit. The beach was very nice but the ocean was littered with dead plant life and the workers were trying diligently to keep the beach clean but it was a never ending en devour. It was not the resorts fault for the state of the ocean, we can thank all of us for another side effect of global warming. Most of the staff was very nice and they were making a valiant effort to do a good job but they were definitely shot staffed in many areas. Overall it wasn't a terrible experience but it for sure wasn't five star status. This was our seventh trip to the mayan and have much better experiences at four star resorts. We will probably not return to this resort.

Royally Treated at the Royalton Hideaway!
The Hideaway at the Royalton was exactly the all inclusive experience we were looking for!
Our vacation began with a private and quick transer from Cancun airport.
We absolutely appreciated the resort's short distance from the airport however because of its location it does present a problem for reasonably priced transportation should guests want to venture off the resort. Apparently it is quite pricey to take a cab to Cancun, Puerto Morales and Playa. The resort is trying to rectify this issue [... read more]and are in the planning stages of introducing a shuttles service .
Upon arrival, the beautiful, open air lobby with panoramic ocean views took our breath away.
That set the tone for a week for total relaxation and pampering.
Our checkin was very efficient. Our suite was well appointed in contemporary decor. We slept peacefully in the most comfortable bed imaginable.
Initially we had booked a suite on the mangrove side. Our suite had absolutely everything we needed, from dual vanity sinks and rain showers, to a huge tv, lovely terrace and stocked bar fridge. After a couple of days we decided to upgrade to a suite that had an ocean view. We chose a Presidential Suite, which had all the anemites of our previous suite. The extra perks we're running oceanviews from all rooms, 2 full bathrooms, a separate living area and kitchenette and a massive rooftop terrace with a 14 ' pool/ hottub. We felt this upgrade was definitely worth it. We opted out of the Diamond Club. If we needed anything we simply called room service.
We enjoyed service in our room for a couple of breakfast meals of perfect Eggs Benny, sausages, hash browns, fresh OJ and the best cappuccinos.
The dining options at this resort are exceptional and the food quality incredible. We went to the main buffet only twice during our stay but it was the largest buffet I have ever seen, with so many food choices.
We chose the a la cart restos for most of our meals. There is no advance reservation system in place, with the exception of the Teppanaki show at the Japanese restaurant, Zen. The system is pretty much first come first serve. If the restaurant is busy, you put your name on a list. Our favourite restaurant was Grazie, the Italian one. Outstanding Italian fare that would rival any I have had in good Italian restaurants in cosmopolitan cities. The seafood risotto and rack of lamb were to die for.
We also enjoyed Zen, The Beach Grill and Dorado (incredible ceviche!!). All the ala carte restos had excellent wine lists but the house wines were decent so we never felt we had to pay that premium to enjoy wine with our meals.
All other libations were top notch! Fabulous margaritas (try mango), delish mojitos (hmm...watermelon), whatever one desires. My husband enjoys a nice drink of scotch or sipping tequila in the evening and was happy to be offered Johnny Walker Black and Don Julio Amber.
The barstaff at the Hideaway and the Lobby bar are outstanding, attentive and creative. The pool butlers are unbelievably efficiant and amiable. Big thank yous to Victor, Antonio and Alex!!
At every turN there were staff members wanting to make your experiance the absolutely best vacation possible.
That being said, glitches occur. We did experiance some spotty service.
In most cases, if this occurred, the staff took it very seriously and went over and above to make it up to us.
Speaking of the staff, these folks work incredibly hard so that guests have the optimum experiance and are most grateful to receive gratuities.
Many comments have been made regarding the ongoing construction at the resort. There are a few issues on the family side of the resort. The areas are tented and the workers are very discreet. This had no impact on our enjoyment of the resort.
We felt that there could be more restrooms throughout the resort grounds.
Returning to the subject of restaurants. I have read some reviews from guests claiming to have had food poisoning during their stay. I am a trained chef and particularly observant when it comes to food safety. I would be VERY surprised if this was true. Perhaps these guests encountered a gastro bug or picked up something off one of the many common elements that are used by hundreds of guests during the course of a day. Despite the hand sanitizer offered upon entering any of the restaurants.
With regards to the entertainment. Some of it was typical AI resort fare, however there were some outstanding performers as well. One evening, we enjoyed a brilliant performance by a trio of tenors. Another evening, by the Hideway pool, there was this very talented violinist playing an electric violin... Unbelievable.
I have to share one final highlight. On our last evening, after a superb dinner at Grazie, we were making our way back to the Hideaway section. The air was filled with the scent of chocolate. The resort chefs had architected several stunning tablescapes filled with chocolate confections for tasting.... A memorable delight for the senses.
We didn't take the opportunity to explore the spa or gym facilities and didn't get to all the
carte restaraunts.
No worries, we plan on returning in early December:)
