Barcelo Maya Tropical: Paradisiac and Wonderful Place!!
This hotel left us ALL in awe. We came in a group of about 30 people for a destination wedding. All of us were amazed at the high quality of the food served, of the high cleaning standards, to the unforgettable and constant smiles of servers, dancers, actors, employees at the Reception desk, at the points of sale. The Officiant at the wedding was Superb, as well as the girl that organizes the weddings and the Photographer couldn't take better pictures. Everything was like a dream come true! Supe[... read more]r clean rooms, exotic food served with passion and incredible handcraft and ability. Everything was exceptional. The turtles in the open sea, the sea life, the multiple amenities!!! The many pools were superb. Even the TV channels offered multiple up-to-date movies and TV shows. The Spa was like a 5 star Hilton Hotel. I do not have enough words of encouragement for the outstanding work preformed everywhere. From the personnel washing the floors and the walls (!) of hallways at 6 am in the morning, to the dedicated people collecting seaweed on a daily basis.... Zero defects. Simply amazing. I haven't stopped giving all my praises to your wonderful Barcelo Maya Tropical. You make Mexico great! You've got my 5 Michelin stars for all of you in the blink of an eye. Felicitaciones!!!!

Bahia Principe Explore Akumal: 3.5 stars - poor a la carte restaurant system, rooms need updating and cart service could be improved
Pros:
a lot of restaurants to choose from if booked at Akumal luxury resort
staff was 99% great and friendly
smaller 3 story complexes which makes it more quiet in rooms
a/c worked great in our room
kids waterslides at Coba resort great for kids 3-12
decent amount of shade and trees throughout a good part of property
room service can be done through app and arrives within 40 minutes
night entertainment, especially music, very good for family to enjoy local music/bands
we had a lot of ch[... read more]oice of fruits at buffets and even a gluten free bread option available
Cons:
even though a la carte restaurant offers a lot of choice, if you aren't aware you can book 10 days before your arrival, you will have a lot of trouble finding a restaurant to book which then disappoints paying the extra cash to stay at Akumal versus other properties as Akumal is only one giving you 1 a la carte reservation per night while other resorts (Coba and Tulum) offer 2 reservations per week
a la carte restaurants show as full on app but between 17:30-19:00 often just 20-30 people out of capacity of 100+. We were told this is because people don't cancel their reservations which sounds like bs as I don't see 80% of people not cancelling there reservations. We were told you can take a chance at a restaurant and walk in and see if the hostess will allow you or you can ask customer experience (desk near lobby) to see if they can work some magic. Still inconvenient when you pay extra for a la carte. Big miss here for a la carte restaurant reservations.
the cart service to travel can be good but if you go to Tulum resort, expect to wait 15 minutes for a cart to get back to Akumal or Coba resort
can be a lot of walking if you aren't able to catch a cart to drive you which isn't ideal with smaller kids
heard a lot of complaints about beach being rocky
can get some waiters in a la carte restaurants who disappear for a while which makes dining experience longer than it should be
our bathroom was dated. mirrors were stained and tub/shower was needing some uplift.
beds were hard and pillows we had a lot but all worn out were your head just goes right through it
For Akumal luxury resort, I give this a 3.5 stars due to extra money you pay for a la carte reservations which you are entitled to 1 per night versus 2 per week at other properties at resort. If you can't get in restaurants, why pay more?
Also the cart service can be an issue depending where you want to go.
Rooms need some updating.

Paradisus Playa del Carmen: Beautiful Resort
I found Paradisus to be a beautiful resort—very clean, well kept, aesthetically pleasing, friendly staff. Great amenities above and beyond restaurants (ice cream shop, Nespresso cafe, etc). My only complain is the food – most restaurants were good except for BlueAgave (a taco restaurant)—the food was absolutely terrible, and in some instances, completely inedible—it took over an hour for my party of 7 to be served and there were only 2 or 3 other tables at the time. The "street vendor" taco boot[... read more]h outside of the buffet was delicious, in comparison. Sol (steakhouse) was not included and was extra, which I found strange at an all-inclusive resort and the first time I've encountered that in 15+ years of travelling. Buffet food was good for breakfast, but lunch and dinner were almost inedible and not appealing. Undercooked burgers one day (yuck), stale items and/or seafood that had clearly been sitting under heat lamps for hours, etc. I was expecting better quality of food for the price of the resort.
I'm a beach person, but there was so much seaweed, I couldn't get past it to get in the water more than a few steps. Probably why the pools (both family and adult only side) were so busy all the time and almost impossible to find chairs at. To actually secure a spot so I didn't have to compete with people playing the towel game at 6am every day, I ended up paying for a cabana for 2 days (annoying). But I spent a fair amount of time at the adult pool and there was always fun activities, swim up bar had great service, and the pool was large and clean.
Rooms were big, relatively modern, and kept very clean. Bathrooms were beautiful, large and modern with a separate water closet (nice touch), a large shower with rain head, and huge jacuzzi tub. The only negative was the noise. The buildings are all tiled on the interior and therefore every noise echos throughout the 4 stories of rooms. We were near the elevator lobby and it was SO LOUD. There was a wedding while I was there one night and some guests must have been drunk because there seemed to be a loud fight and screaming/yelling from 10pm until well after 2am... ON THE FAMILY SIDE... WHERE PEOPLE HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN. I was shocked at the ignorance and complete lack of common courtesy by some guests to not yell and shout in the hallways. Lots of door slamming too at all hours of the day and night. Bring earplugs if you want to sleep.
Overall, it was a great experience. Food could be better and more attention to noise reduction would be good.

JOIA Paraiso by Iberostar: Amazing, top shelf resort
We had a fantastic time at Joia Paraiso. Our check in was wonderful, we were greeted with refreshments and treats while we sat down and waited to be checked in. The resort was fantastic, all indoors and air conditioned. Our room was a standard room but was perfect. Cleaning staff and all staff were fantastic, concierge, Spa, beach, and restaurant staff were always pleasant and very helpful. Very peaceful compared to the adjacent Iberostar places with kids and teens.
Restaurant were top not[... read more]ch, definitely 5 star restaurants all round. Liquor was also great with many top brands and variety for any drink you want.
Pools were great with one being a quiet relaxing pool and the other pool with a swim up bar and lots of activities and music all day. Beach was great although the water entrance in front of the Joia was rocky but if you just walked 100 meters down to one of the other Iberostar resorts you could enter the water without any problems.
Definitely will return and would recommend JOIA to others. Worth the extra money it cost to stay there.

Barcelo Maya Beach Resort: Impossible to find a beach chair and depressing dolphin enclosure
Quite disappointing stay. If you wake up, have breakfast, and go to the beach for 8:30 am GOOD LUCK finding a chair until like 3 pm. We walked around across the entire beach and couldn’t even find one free chair. People wake up early and claim chairs with their items or beach towels. Some people don’t even show up until 11 am!! Employees weren’t very helpful and said that you can’t take a claimed chair, even if no one shows up for hours (even though there’s signs saying you can’t claim a chair).[... read more] Same situation at the pool. Had to sit on the floor with our towels. Apart from that, you walk by a sad dolphin enclosure where the dolphins swim in a small pool with no shade. Very depressing to see and it’s sad that this type of animal treatment is still present. If you search up the dolphins at this hotel, you’ll find out that a few had died here. Generally, resort was clean and well kept, but old. Our bathtub didn’t drain well when you took a shower. The beach itself is pretty nice and well kept. Food was average to good and generally a decent selection. We did get upset stomachs one day, unclear from what exactly. If you love sad dolphins and a going to war to find a place to sit during the day, this resort is a great choice for you.

Platinum Yucatan Princess: Gracia Mexico
The resort was clean, the food was really good. Beach, not so great. Lots of seaweed and very rocky. If you like and want to swim in the ocean, bring water shoes. The hotel wasn't super busy, it was kind of quiet which was good for us. Spa services were a nice addition. The ride to and from the airport was approx 50 minutes, depending on traffic and time of day.

Crown Paradise Club Cancun: Kid friendly
The hotel was clean, had great amenities, lots of great things for the kids. The big slides were awsome, the kids slides area was set up nice. The pools were freezing cold. The ocean was beauty, waves were always big everyday so little kids not so great for. Needs a swim up bar, and the food wasn't amazing at the buffet, the restaurants were tough to get in, when they needed reservations. The other ones you had to wait in lines, and after 6pm it was a long wait.

Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta: Great Vacation
The resort is not too big, and the staff are very friendly. The location is close to downtown, and the beach is nice. The sunsets are amazing from the balcony and the service in the restaurants is great. All the staff were great but to mention a few there were Marijose, Danue, Kelly and Alejandra. We have dealt with Jarius at trip central on numerous vacations and he is knowledgeable and always follows through on his word.

Paradisus La Perla Adults Only Riviera Maya: Amazing Resort, best so far!!!
Everything about the resort was amazing. The a la cartes were all amazing. The room was very clean and large and very well equipped with shampoo and creme rinse and body wash and toothbrushes and bath robes and a safe. Well worth the Reserve upgrade as our assistant Cynthia more than fulfilled our every request such as arranging our dinners and champagne on our anniversary with roses and cake at the restaurant and in our room. Maria at the reserve pool was also amazing as she provided us a Bal[... read more]i bed in the shade (I was ill recently so I have a avoid alot of direct sunlight) she would put towels on it every morning with a smile. The cenote was fantastic and a definite must see. We walked the 30 minutes to shopping and negotiated the pricing of everything. The only thing I would change is the 3.5 hour bus ride on the way back to the airport after having to wait at each hotel for others and then waiting another 3 hours to board the plane and the airport is super expensive. And the seaweed was really bad, they tried to clean it every day but you couldn't swim in it.

Dreams Puerto Morelos Resort and Spa: Acceptable if you get a good price
Overall I was happy with my trip. I would give it 4/5. We had to change rooms as our first room had plumbing problems. The highlight was the food. It was often very tasty. House keeping lacked consistency. I found a deal for CAD 2900 for 7 days and 2 people. Had I paid more I might of been unsatisfied with the value of the property.

Secrets The Vine Cancun: Service was A1, two thumbs up, 10/10!
Secrets The Vine was a beautiful resort for rest and relaxation. The room was beautifully appointed and contained almost everything we could have needed plus more! The mini bar fridge was well stocked daily with beer, soft drinks, fruit juice and water. Snacks were also left for us daily, Pringles and M&M’s. Additionally, we were left a bottle of tequila in our room for the week.
Our concierges for the week were Jared and Stephano. They went above and beyond to make our stay special. No reque[... read more]st was too great. All of the service staff were exceptional from morning to evening. And always with a smile! The entertainment was wonderful. The food was quite good with enough variety to please a number of palates. Our meal at the steakhouse was the most memorable and breakfast and lunch at Olio was always exceptional! If you really want to treat yourself, and if it’s within your budget, I would highly recommend Preferred deluxe! This was the first time that we had stayed at a resort “Preferred” and hopefully it won’t be our last! Check in and checkout was fast and painless. I would highly recommend Secrets The Vine!

Secrets Huatulco: Best Resort!
First time to Huatulco and to a Secrets Resort. Loved both. Rooms are incredibly comfortable - all have view of the bay (except those that walk onto the pool levels) ... The sand in this part of Mexico is coarse, tan sand (easier to wash off) .. it does get hot on one's feet. One must be careful with respect to the waves and undertow .. however, we were in the ocean daily. There are many pools - so never crowded. The snorkeling in this cove was not worth it .. we did not take the all day 7 Bays [... read more]and Snorkeling tour (7 hr) but next time we will just take a cab to the National Park and snorkel there. The palapas are long rows (not individual) but we were able to enjoy the full day on the beach with good protection from direct sun. As the bay is not huge one cannot take 'long walk on the beach' as one does in the DR .. but no seaweed!
Adults only - and more on the more 'mature' side .. so peaceful and quiet (perfect for us!).
The restaurants are generally excellent (Burgundy, Tamarindo and Oceanis were our favouurites). We paid for Preferred status so had breakfast at Castaways most mornings. However, the buffet at the Market Grill was better than most buffets we have experienced.
The staff were friendly and helpful We took one tour into town that we enjoyed ..
We were there for 7 days and wished we had booked for longer (10 would be perfect). I am sure we will return.

Dreams Bahia Mita Surf and Spa: A Surprise Vacation
We decided to book our vacation at Dreams Bahia Mita . We had previously booked on three different occasions at Dreams Huatulco and the number of rooms/guests was comfortable for us making the atmosphere pleasant . When we arrived we were very surprised to find that the resort was combined with Secrets and of course had a much larger number of guests and different atmosphere. We decided to change up to Secrets hoping to enjoy a calmer atmosphere. Unfortunately, the hotel did not seem to correc[... read more]tly monitor guests who were Secrets v Dreams guests which was a problem in some cases. The cleanliness of this hotel is outstanding, staff are wonderful as always and the Secrets restaurants were amazing. We knew that the beach area was not great and this is so true. It would be wonderful if more work was done on this area. We enjoyed ourselves except Hyatt needs to do a better job of identifying Dreams and Secret guests in their designated areas. Future guests need to be aware of size of property and the fact that Dreams and Secret guests are joined on same property.

We loved the improvements to the rooms- the key cards and fridges were great! The rooms were clean and well stocked. We were disappointed that the bikes are in such poor condition, we love riding into Nuevo Vallarta with its wonderful bike path but we barely made it back!

Dreams Bahia Mita Surf and Spa: Thoughts on Secrets Punta Mita
The grounds of the property were lovely. Great dining options and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately, we were not made aware that Dreams and Secrets were physically attached, so we were disappointed to discover that a lot of the pools and restaurants had many families with children using them even though we thought we were in an adults only resort.
The beach was also a big disappointment. I would not recommend this as an adult only resort.
