Check in went well and we received exactly the room we specified. The resort is well kept. The beautiful turquoise water welcomes you at the beach with calm water that you can walk in for a distance without being to deep or rocky. Has a nice sandy bottom. Pools are cooler but well kept. Buffet was stocked with fish, beef, chicken and pork, often at the grill with a pasta station fresh, fruits, veggies and breads. The Japanese restaurant is definitely worth the booking with a good show and delici[... read more]ous food. Piano Bar was a great highlight and nightly retreat. Yusmilla takes pride in making great drinks and is very friendly. The snack bar was ok but needed to order food. This resort is good for getting around with short distances from lobby restaurants pools and ocean. We booked through Trip Central with Sandra Taylor who was a great agent.

Club Amigo Ancon: Good value!
Stayed at this resort with my family over Christmas and New Years. The three hour bus ride from the airport was on a comfortable bus with ac and washroom. Before writing about the hotel I want to give some advice on currency.Only bring US dollars and do not exchange for pesos! The Cubans prefer to deal in US dollars and with it you will get the best value. Some places such as the airport don't even accept pesos and even where they do you get a better value with US dollars. You get a terrible exchang[... read more]e rate with Canadian dollars so leave them at home.
The hotel is a good value but don't bring 5 star expectations or you will be disappointed! Beach is nice and very long, we never had a problem with lawn chairs.Pool is good with lots of chairs as well but no swim up bar. Buffet and snack bar are basic but we always found something we liked. Service was a little slow but it was never busy enough to really matter. Entertainment was good and the shows were basic but fun, perhaps they could turn the volume down a notch or 2.Sander was a particularly good host and had us feeling included the whole time.Rooms are basic but acceptable.Always had hot water. There were the usual flaws for this star rating in Cuba as in some lively red ants, fiddly locks( keys, no cards) and occasional toilet malfunctions. We did however have amazing ocean and sunset views from the third floor. Scuba diving is quite good on the nearby coral reef and an exceptional value at $35 US per dive including equipment! Overall a good time and value just bring realistic expectations considering the star rating!

Hotel Playa Paraiso: Great resort!
We just recently went to this resort from January 4-11, 2025. Everything at the resort was great. We didn’t have any shortages of food at the buffet, the maid service did well and always replaced our toilet paper, fresh towels, and water bottles. (Don’t drink the tap
water. Use bottled water to brush your teeth so you don’t get sick) The fridge was not stocked with anything. We didn’t use it. We really enjoyed the other food options besides the buffet like the pizza that is down by the beach, t[... read more]he fresh tacos right on the beach, and the fish and chips, which is fried fish and plantain chips at the beach bar. The lobby in the evening was always very lively with music. The pool had music and dancing every day as well. They did entertainment shows about every other night. We also recommend checking out Playa Pilar, which is about 40 minutes from the resort on a bus. We did an excursion at Playa Pilar which was $40 per person and you go on a boat you go snorkelling and you get a lobster lunch on a private island. It was awesome! Chat with the front desk on how to know which bus to take. We also checked out a restaurant off resort called Lenny’s. It was a great lobster dinner with a beautiful view oceanside. We enjoyed the options at the 24 hour snack bar (chicken sandwich, tuna, plantain chips, hot dog, hamburger, sometimes fries, sometimes sweet potato chips) The snack bar made the best lattes! The weather was a bit breezy and fresh so you needed a light sweater in the evening, but overall everything was great. The staff was friendly. The only thing to keep in mind is to bring toilet paper or wipes with you as the lobby washrooms don’t always have toilet paper so it’s good to be prepared!

Have a few things that could be improved at the resort. Food was very good but lacked service in buffets girls standing around while plates need to be removed from tables. The elevators inside need cleaning badly mirrors dirty and stainless panels dirty. The beach has lots rocks so don’t go there for the beach.Mainbar is good great service.Pool was clean and pool bar good service.Overall nice resort just needs some tighter management of service in buffet.Grounds are well kept.

Starfish Varadero: Cuba is Cuba
Just returned from another fun trip in Cuba. I have stayed at Starfish a few times over the years. We had a windy week and some good not great weather. Here are my pros and cons for the resort.
Cons- grill at beach bar not open, nor the outdoor buffet near beach, didn't see that buffet open at any time. Also restaurant near pool was not open for anything as well nor bar near quiet pool, although was only there once. A la carte reservations not very organized, could not get one restaurant.
[... read more]Pros- Friendly staff, would engage with you by the pool and the beach at times. You can see they are trying to maintain the hotel grounds, seems they just aren't able to do it all. Evening entertainment staff works hard as well and does a good job. Olivio was also entertaining and very kind in a la carte restaurant.
Overall provides great value for the price, would return, just ready to try somewhere else.

Sol Palmeras: Very nice, clean, good food
Awesome week during xmas holidays. The resort was very clean, cozy and the animation was just right. We were a group of 6 people including teenagers and an 87 year old. This resort was perfect. A short walking distance to the beach, to the buffet, to the pool and lobby. The food: For our standard, it was excellent! Lots of fish, red meat, good variety of salads etc. With the saving that we made going to Cuba in comparison to other Caribbean destinations, we went on a safari adventure, ca[... read more]tamaran trip, visit in the downtown Varadero and one evening we went to the #1 Trip Advisor rated Cuban Restaurant in Varadero - that was a culinary experience! The beach is amazing and the sand is smooth. Going back for sure!

Melia Jardines del Rey: New Years at Melia Jardines
The Check in process was delayed until past 7:00, there were no clean sheets and towels or rooms. Took several tries to get a clean room.
Once situated, our clean towels were taken by the cleaning service the next day not to be seen again for over seven days. Additionally about half of the days the beach towels were unavailable for exchange.
There was only hot water for two of the nights which is very unfortunate if you happen to get sick.
The water sports have to be booked ahead of use[... read more] in the morning, and there cannot be any wind that day or they will be unavailable. In an 11 day stay we weren’t able to take them out at all.
Service was terrible, especially with the difficulty in getting a room (with which after an hour had passed they tried putting us back into one of the bad rooms). For the first 2/3 of our stay it was difficult to get table service. There were also certain staff working behind the grill who would serve the spanish speaking guest behind you in line before you, and set the best pieces of meats aside.
Beach wasn’t very clean and God forbid you leave your towel unattended, ours was taken right from our balcony.
This resort has really upgraded itself.
The entertainment staff is something else!! They never stop going, always have games, competitions that are kid and family friendly. By the pool, on the beach, lobby. They don't let the rain stop them - they move it all to the lobby. Their games and competitions last a long time, anyone can join and they go around encouraging people to join. They have a simple but fun dance they teach to all the guests. If they aren't dancing, doing games then t[... read more]hey sit down one on one with the kids and colour, or partake in whatever activities the kids are doing. A special shout out to Yali, Yude, Johnny, Chicky and that's only to name a few. The painter Eric is always working hard for the next set up /taking down. The amount of costume changes throughout the day and shows always keeps you guessing. The DJ was receptive to what kind of music people want to hear.
Some activities included balloon toss, coloring flag, mini spa for kids, teaching dances, ORANGE PARTY WAS EPIC, games with parents, musical chairs, mini cars for kids, boys vs girls for adults by the pool. A wide range of kids games, adults games and family games. EVERYTHING was appropriate for kids.
The bar staff (shout out to Yoyo, Paco) knows your drink, pays equal attention (if not more attention) to kids and helps them right away, is patient with them.
Pools were very clean, grounds cleaned, glass cleaned right away.
The maid Staff in the rooms were always busy, kind and smiling, sweet.
The nightly shows are amazing for adults and the kids were just mesmerized by the dancing, singing, and costumes. The best I've ever seen.
Reception is easy, friendly and no issues. They speak excellent English so any issues can easily be solved (we had no issues whatsoever)
The rooms were clean, no mold, hot water, never got yelled at for leaving the patio door open (grand muthu would get mad). One early morning my husband left to get coffee and left our door slightly a jar where it didn't latch. A gentleman worker knocked to make sure everything was OK (it was super early) and I felt that he was watching out for all the guests as normally the door would be closed if no one was in there so wouldn't want anyone to break in or people could be sleeping with a door slightly open. Made me feel safe that they're always looking out.
I went for a run early morning and ended up at the back of the resort, the gardeners even work hard when no ones watching. The grounds are immaculate and they are always smiling, saying Hola. They are friendly, always offering a coconut but ask once and that's it, not pushy at all.
Every person who works here is always smiling, talks to my family , especially my kids and pay attention to us and seem to actually know and care for their guests.
The food was plentiful and the chefs are funny! Never saw bugs, flies or cockroaches anywhere. Very clean.
I would highly recommend this resort to anyone that is looking for entertainment, and/or with kids. A group of rowdy young adults may not fit with this vibe.
This resort has only gotten better each time we visit. In fact, we're looking to get Married there in the next upcoming months.
Signed,
One Happy Family !!

Iberostar Origin Playa Alameda: Was a fun resort!
Mostly was a fun resort with very nice people, although alot of the daily events that were posted on the TV in the lobby didn't happen, i felt like alot of the people in charge of doing those weren't really doing their job. And constantly finding cock roaches in my room wasn't pleasant. Food is hit or miss but I mostly enjoyed it, jus gotta find what u like though and kinda almost jus stick to it.

Grand Aston Varadero Beach Resort: Take the bad with the good.
We arrived December 31, 2024 and were excited to get into our room and join the New Year's celebration. Unfortunately it didn't go well. The room we got was a basic room, overlooking a parking lot. We paid an upgrade for Ocean View Deluxe. I returned to the front desk and the lady tells me they are full, she cannot move me. I persist and she asks me to show my confirmation. Thank goodness I had an email with the full details. She goes to talk to the manager and gives me a new room. We ta[... read more]ke off again to the new room, however when we get there, it smells, I notice stains on the bed quilt and I go to take a shower, no towels. Then I notice how dirty the bathroom is. When I got to sit on bed to call front desk, I notice no pillow cases, stains on pillows, and no bed sheets, just the quilt on the bed. Now I am absolutely grossed out and really upset. We head back to the front desk and she tells me, sorry, she cannot move me and expects me to take this dirty room.
This is a 5 Star resort?? I start crying, cannot believe this. I am single mom, travelling with my 12 year old daughter and she can't do anything for me. Standing there crying my eyes out, she gets the Customer Service agent to come over and take me away from the counter and there are a bunch more checking in and I'm sure it doesn't look good for their reputation.
Customer Service tells me to go eat. They will see what they can do and come see her after.
After.... she lets me know, they found another room and it is being cleaned. The doorman comes with me to help move my luggage from the dirty room to my new room. I show him the stains and how disgusting this is. He dismisses it and says, let's go!
My new room (at this point is room number 3 now) is better till I pull the sheets back later in the evening and see more blood stains.
I am too tired to complain at this point and sleep on other side of the bed, my daughter sleeps on pull out bed.
The next day I see the room cleaner, I show her the sheets and she says ok no problem, she'll remove this sheet. She literally removes the sheet and doesn't replace it. So at night, I now have one sheet on the bed and nothing on top.
I call the front desk again several times, 20x or more. They kept hanging up on me. Transferring me to Customer Service where no one was even there. It took 3hrs to get a sheet delivered to my room.
The front desk are rude and refuse to help you with anything. We noticed a line up every day with people complaining about their room.
The rooms are modern, but sheets and bedding have stains, toilet paper is hard to come by. No daily water unless you tip and request it.
Other than that, the food was great. The staff, chefs, cooks at the grills, everyone really friendly and doing their part.
The pools are VERY cold. Could not swim whole vacation. The ocean was really rough, so it wasn't a great holiday for swimming. Beach was nice. No one could use the pools except for a few who braved it, but their dip in the pool quickly ended after a couple minutes as they couldn't take it anymore.
The photos of the resort look great, but it's definately NOT a 5 star hotel. I would say 3 star at best.
Great price! But, Sadly I'll never go back. Not worth it.

Roc Barlovento: Roc Barlovento
I really enjoy the older style resorts. They offer great value. They do have some small issues like the main pool was not operating properly, and the food plan is some what poor, expresso machines not expressing hot water so the coffee expresso was poor, and no coffee at breakfast. I am not sure why there is no coffee at breakfast. I would settle for cowboy coffee in the morning if they had it.
Still great value for me as a budget traveler. Overall resort has a very nice feeling to it.
