Secrets The Vine Cancun: Pretty but not great
The hotel was beautiful and having everything in one building was handy. The let down was the service. We usually travel to The Royal in Playa del Carmen but decided to try another highly rated hotel this time. The friendliness and effort of the staff was not evident in this property. Often had to wait for service and there were very few staff members who made us feel welcome and wanted. Food was good but not great. We arrived early in the day so was not expecting a room right away but had to wa[... read more]it till 4:30pm! There were 6 of us incoming and they couldn't get 3 rooms ready?! The hotel was not full. As a compensation, we were upgraded to the 'Preferred Club'. We saw none of the benefits (I.e. Alcoholics and snacks in our room). We did gain entry to the second level pool area which was nice because the loungers were far better quality than the beach (most of them were cracked in the bottom) and service was better.

Grand Palladium Colonial: Great stay
Hotel was very clean. Food overall pretty good and dealt well with a dietary concerns. Japanese and Italian à la cartes were not good: slow service and below average food. BBQ, Brazilian and Mexican were great. Beautiful beach and good shore snorkeling. Bed and pillows could have been more comfortable. Second visit to hotel. Just as happy second go round.

Moon Palace Cancun: Best resort we've been to.
The resort itself is beautiful. How we were treated was even better. Friendly efficient, warm people. We did the all inclusive golf and it didn't disappoint. The guys at the course were amazing and we got to golf a gorgeous course for minimal cost with this package. Little touches meant a lot. Our adult sons were pretty excited about the beer at the course being included in the all inclusive! Also, the best food I've had at any resort. AND you could ALWAYS get a lounge chair at any time of day. [... read more]It may not be right beside the pool but at least there were enough for everyone. The first resort I've been to where that was the case! We would definitely go back.

Grand Palladium Kantenah: Amazing resort
Stayed at this resort with my boyfriend and 2 other couples. Had an AMAZING time. Would definitely go back and highly recommend it.
Rooms- very clean, very nice, large rooms. Nicest rooms at any resort I have stayed at.
Food- tons of options between buffets at all resorts and a la cartes were GREAT! I believe there were 5 buffets and 9 or 10 a la cartes which did not require reservations and wait times were max 1 hour at dinner time but later no waits. Japanese needed reservation only but was my[... read more] favourite restaurant!
Pools- 2 massive pools were awesome to be around all day. Lots of entertainment available (yoga, dancing, contests etc.) Small kids waterpark beside the Kentenah/Colonial large pool. Other smaller pools as well.
Grounds- the environment is amazing! The walkways to all of the rooms are surrounded by trees and jungle. Paved and covered overhead though which is great. The nature at this resort is awesome; there is an area blocked off strictly for flamingos, there is a large caged off area with crocodiles, and many iguanas and lemars wandering around (I am afraid of creatures, but did not feel uncomfortable at all, it was so cool!)
Tours- Segwey tour at the resort was soooo fun! I originally said no to it but my friends convinced me and now I want to buy one haha! Jungle Maya excursion in town was amazing as well. Repelled into a cave into water, zip lined through the jungle and into water, snorkelled through a cave - so much fun.

The Pyramid Cancun: Beautiful Beach!
This hotel had many flaws! At check-in, they gave us a standard room when we booked beachfront. They couldn't move us for four days. The rooms were not very clean. Our faucet leaked and flooded our countertop every time it was turned on. We left tips everyday and still were not impressed with the cleaning or the lack of restocking our mini fridge. Room service was NOT included. You could order one or the total of seven things on the room service menu and no matter what it still cost $15.00USD.
O[... read more]ur new rooms were MUCH better but still lacked on stocking the mini fridge and towels. There was renovations going on in the rooms above and beside us, which didn't so much bother me, I don't spend my days sleeping anyhow but some of the other people we travelled with had those complaints. Restaurant service was hit and miss. It is unreasonable to wait anywhere from twenty five minutes to three hours. Even for BUFFET. One instance we were told to come for dinner at 6:30pm, so we did. When we got there, they told us we wouldn't be able to come back to eat until 9:30pm. We decided to put our names down for the restaurant pretty well attached to it, twenty five minute wait. It turned to thirty five, forty-five then we said to heck with it. In the meantime, it started to rain so they let us stand inside the first restaurant that told us to come back at 9:30pm. Not even HALF of the restaurant's tables were seated. Bartenders were the least friendly people at the resort. They would tell you they had zero straws but very rarely they would give you one. If you ordered a drink that someone else previously ordered but didn't take, they would pull it up from behind the counter and give it to you. As if anyone wants to drink a melted drink. I didn't see you make it, I don't know what's in there. If a new drink was asked for they would say "No" and move the old drink towards you more.
Hallways were constantly flooding. Security was not friendly and could not speak English. Just puffed out their chests most of the time. They wouldn't let us use our ground floor balconies as beach access. They made us walk through our building (to the other end) out and back again to use our beach chairs in the sand.
Coyote Loco (Disco) - had great entertainment, and staff was awesome there.
Bus boys were the friendliest. - We enjoyed a pizza with them at the front of the lobby one night when we returned from a night out in town.
Beach was by far the best thing about this resort.

Krystal Grand Puerto Vallarta: Good resort in all respects but one
Resort is set well back from the main roads in Puerto Vallarta and as a result the setting is quiet. Set on a nice stretch of beach suitable for long walks. We swam in the ocean as well as the pools which were great. Rooms are well laid out. Food is very good - always something healthy to choose from - fish and good selection of salads and fruit. Staff are very friendly and fast. The fitness facility was excellent - all equipment in good shape and relatively new.
Big negative for us - We reques[... read more]ted a new room after the first night due to a foul odour coming up through the shower drain. Initially, the second room was fine but then we found a similar odour coming from the AC vent. We had to open the patio doors and have the ceiling fan on high for an hour or so to eliminate the smell. The problems were reported to the hotel staff but I suspect this may have been a problem with more than just the 2 rooms we had.
Our overall rating is only "fair" based solely on the issue with the odour in the rooms.

Riu Vallarta: Best Riu experience yet
Almost every year, we stay at a Riu hotel as we love this chain. This Riu was outstanding in terms of service specifically at the restaurants. We were super impressed. The other outstanding service item was the drink service on the beach. Servers would be walking around all day with trays of drinks so we didn't even have to go to the bar, it was delivered right to our beach chairs. The Riu food is always delicious and this was no exception. This hotel is probably very noisy if you are on a lower[... read more] floor but we were at the top so everything was fine. I recommend a higher floor for noise issues as well as better views. It was lively in the evening with bands playing and people actually hung out and partied later into the evening which you sometimes don't see at other resorts. It was a great ambiance and I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Crown Paradise Club: would not go back or recommend
The hotel was old, activities not well run (not even posted or communicated), food was just okay if you eat meat but it was poor if you're a vegetarian. A la carte ones were great! Hospitality suite sucked! Great if you bring kids but not if you don't or if you don't want to be around them.
It was clean though and the service was really good. Being next to a flea market was great to go to but there were also a lot of vendors on beach.

Outstanding week in the sun for a family wedding - location for the ceremony was on the ocean in a large gazebo - very beautiful!! Rooms were excellent: large, well maintained and very clean. Great food with lots of options. Two super pools with bars and a good beach with reef for snorkeling; lots of sea life to see. But the best had to be the very attentive staff at Dreams, they provided excellent friendly service throughout our stay.

Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa: EPIC!
Been home for a few days now and cannot wait to go back, bit first we need to loose the weight we gained.
We loved pretty much everything, the food was amazing even in the buffet.
Our room was perfect and the wife loved the jaccuzi tub, the beds are awesome and struggled every morning to get out, the dual rain head shower was great to speed up getting on with our day. There is a bit of repairs going on but never let it interfere with our stay.
The booze selection at the resort is amazing we are[... read more] not hard alcohol drinkers but the quality was great and indulged a little too much. Make sure you go see Luis at martini he is great, and took care of us on most nights.
We would go back in a second, we dressed up most nights and did an a la carte then enjoyed drinks then shut down the night club.

Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa: Awesome New Resort!
This was our first time to a Royalton resort, and we had a GREAT TIME!!!! It was newly opened a month before our arrival, so we knew to expect a few hiccups, but you get that with anything new, you just gotta be realistic!
We were upgraded to the Hideaway section, which was nice. We never got a swim-up room or jacuzzi on the balcony (we had a swamp view) with the ocean to the one side - BUT having this less than desirable room, we were able to get late check out until 6pm, no problem! (Others w[... read more]ith swim-up rooms etc couldn't because their rooms were already booked for 3pm check in!)
The food was amazing! EVERYONE gained 5-10lbs! We were all on the bus going to the airport comparing how many pounds each person gained - we were gonna have a contest! (the resort really needs to start selling sweat pants at the shops for people to wear home!!)
The best a la carte for me was OPA! We never went to ZEN, Armadillio or Grazie - but went to the Hunter Steahouse, OPA (twice), Agave and Dorado (the Hideaway restaurant).
The buffet was huge and had amazing food as well! There was nothing bad there at all to eat! Everything we ate (from the pizza to the eggs) was amazing!
The good thing was that if you couldn't make all the a la carte restaurants, you could go to them for lunch! We tried going to Grazie (Italian) for lunch one day but they messed up our order and we never got our food for like 2 hours, so we just went to the buffet.(No big deal because that can easily happen at home too!)
The rooms were awesome!!!! The shower had two rain heads and the jacuzzi tub was divine! The bed, comforter and pillows were super comfortable - it was an overall amazing room! They always stocked it with water, many, many towels and beer, pop and chips! The TV had some great channels too. (HBO, AMC etc...)
They also had turn down service, where they came in again at night to tidy up your room. It was all very luxurious, the rooms and the service!
There are workers working round the clock on the various stuff around the resort - the cracks in the concrete, tiles falling off in the pool, etc....but it's a new resort and there are growing pains. None of this stuff really bothered us - at least they are fixing the issues! They set up white tents for the areas they were working on so it was covered up and no one got dust or anything one them. But the workers must have been super hot!!!Again, it didn't bother us!
The beach is OK - but that's because we just came back from Cuba! It's not as teal and clear at all, but we went in a couple days. The beach has nice sand - lots of seaweed - but they work to get that cleared asap. It's a problem across the coast, not the resort's fault about all the seaweed:) There are lots of chairs and ottomans, and they have servers on the beach and really cool beach bars!
There are many pools....I like the Hideaway pool best! The bartender at that swim-up bar was making awesome shots for all of us, they are very creative and have fun when making drinks and shots there!
There are lots of servers around the various pools ready to take your order. They have bottles of water everywhere - each bar has them whenever you want water! Very handy!!
They have towel stations, so you get a new towel everyday at the towel stations and leave your towel at the end of the day in the USED TOWELS containers they have around the pools/beach area. Very nice not to have to worry about your beach towels all week.
The resort uses top shelf booze - Grey Goose, Crown Royal, Don Juan tequila etc....and they were not using it sparingly!! We had a lot of tequila! At the AGAVE a la carte restaurant, they have tequila shots for after-dinner drinks! It's very fun there!
All the a la carte restaurants are beautifully decorated!
We went to the Disco a lot too. Once the Martini Mix bar closed, people would travel upstairs where the disco and sports bar was. The Sports bar was open all night and served food too.
Ask for Cesar at the sports bar - he is a great bartender!
Ask for Luis at the Martini Mix bar - he always makes fun and exciting drinks!
There's also a cute coffee and pastry shop near the resort shops and Nexus tours office. It looks like a regular coffee shop, I thought we had to pay! The cappuccino's and chocolate croissants were awesome! (all the pastries were tasty!)
We were going to go on the free Nexus shopping tour - but it involved going to a jewelry factory for 45-minutes to listen to a whole speel, then you can go to the mall across the road. We heard from other tours that they can be pretty ruthless with making you buy something, so we opted out.
There was also a $31 shopping tour in Cancun, but it was booked up and we weren't too interested in going to Cancun.
SO we got a taxi and went ourselves to Puerto Morelos, a cute little fishing town with shopping and restaurants. We ate lunch at La Panza, a cute place on the beach with amazing food at great prices! There's a cool snorkeling & fishing place there in town that only costs $25 for 50-minutes owned by Mario and his wife Natasha.
The taxi prices from the resort are very pricey! They could be cheaper then more people would probably go out more on their own. It was $40 one way - $80 round trip - and the guy waits 3 hours there for you.
(There's no way you can walk to the road and take the bus because the resort is built so far back - it takes employees 35 minutes to walk to entrance way!)
Another day we went to tour Playa Del Carmen ($100 - round trip and he waits 3 hours). It was too commercialized for us so we went back to Puerto Morelos for lunch again at La Panza on the beach!!
Both our taxi guys were great, helpful and courteous.! We had Angel Arreaga the 2nd time.
Overall, FANTASTIC time and we'd LOVE to go back one day!
(HIGHLY recommend this resort!!)

Riu Flamingos: Great Vacation
We have just returned from an all inclusive vacation at the Riu Jalisco and want to say that it was a wonderful resort. Anything we needed they were willing to accommodate. We found the resort to be very clean, no garbage lying around etc. the staff all were very friendly. The food was top quality and with 400+ guests on site no one could go hungry. We were never able to book an early seating for the steak dinner as the La Botina restaurant catered to wedding parties first. We could not believe [... read more]the quality of the prawns- bigger and better than those we catch ourselves here on the coast of B.C. Lots of variety in the drinks too...great Mojitos! There were plenty of beach loungers but many will need repair by the end of this season for sure.
We walked the beach for an hour each day and judging by what we saw the Jalisco has the best beach. The sand was soft and clean, waves were big and beautiful, and lots of palm trees for shade.
We came for the sun, sand and good company and were not disappointed.
The only improvement would be to have outside elevators installed at the west ends of the buildings for easier access to the rooms from the beach. It is a long walk from the beach to the lobby elevators. 4+ flights of stairs is challenging for some of us "oldies". We will definitely recommend the Jalisco to others and will return again one day.

Grand Palladium Vallarta: Fantastic location
This resort has an amazing location. The beach and pools are excellent and no one is bothered by vendors. The bars do not skimp on the alocohol content of their drinks and the service at the bars is good and the lobby bar has a very upbeat atmostphere in the evening with music and shows. Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas: Good Value Resort
Stayed at the Riu Palace January 15-22 and had booked through Signature Vacations.
Check-in/out was quick and easy. You get an envelope with a resort map, two towel cards and two room cards. The envelope has a wifi code. We requested a specific room a few weeks in advance by emailing the resort, and were lucky enough to get it- Room #3030.
Room- we booked the Jacuzzi Suite with the two-storey balcony. It was oceanfront and it was beautiful. There was no alarm clock in the room and our room als[... read more]o had no face cloths and when I asked the maid, I was often told they didn't have any. The beer in the mini-fridge was Tecate not Dos Equis. There is no light in the shower and it is very dark. There are no fans in the bathroom either. There room service menu is very limited. Overall, the room amenities need improvements.
Pool/beach- there are two main pools (quiet and loud). During our stay the quiet pool was often invaded by obnoxious wedding parties making their own entertainment. It always seemed busy and you couldn't get a chair after Noon. The actual sitting area on the beach is small. The beach itself is wide but walking in the sand is like walking in a foot of snow. There are many vendors. Swimming is not recommended.
Hotel facilities- lobby is nice. There is a huge lobby/piano bar that overlooks the ocean with beautiful views. Off the bar is a room called the snack bar with liquor, computers and snacks. There are two gift shops in the lobby also and two more by the pools. Below the lobby is the theatre and another bar. The front desk will only exchange Canadian $$ and Mexican $$.
Food- food was good and plentiful but the breakfast and lunch buffet is the same daily. Dinner buffet has themes each night. You need reservations for the Krystal Restaurant (same day only); the Steakhouse and Mexican Restaurants also require reservations. The Japanese does not require reservations. At our Signature Vacations briefing meeting, the customer service staff let us book as many reservations as we wanted and it was a good thing we did because you couldn't get into the steakhouse otherwise. As many have mentioned (and we stayed a Riu before) you have to get up really early to wait in a line. Riu needs to improve this process. Also, at the a la cartes, they only let you order one appetizer and entree each (at other resorts we could order as much as we wanted). Portions are small.
Entertainment- there are many daytime activities at the loud pool. Shows each night--we watched same shows we saw 8 years ago--Riu needs to change things up!
Other Info:
-Bar service can be slow at times
-the wine is poor; they have Canadian Club for Rye; Absolut and other vodka brands. Beefeater for Gin. There are many other good brands of liquor as well (better than at the Sante Fe)
-this resort is big and there are staircases everywhere--bring practical footwear
-this resort was REALLY busy--not the place if you want a relaxed atmosphere
-it is $14USD or 160 pesos one-way to the marina in a taxi
-Taxi prices are posted at the entrance (as the hotel pre-negotiated prices for the year-- this is good if your Canadian because otherwise everything is priced in USD$ and they are converting 14.5 pesos or 15 pesos to 1$USD. Be mindful of this outside of the resort because you could pay more coming back in a taxi
Overall, we would recommend this resort to people who want a nice hotel close to downtown Cabo and for people who like to party.
We wouldn't stay here again because it was way too busy. We would have preferred to stay in San Jose del Cabo but many resorts there are still closed from the hurricane damage. Also, other resorts we've stayed at do not require wristbands, no dinner reservations, towel cards, etc.. These are all minor inconveniences that can be avoided at other high-end resort chains. Cabo was a tourist-trap and party-central and San Jose is picturesque and more laid-back.
