The Hotel is a great choice for families, there are lots of activities for kids, a nightly show 8-9pm, which caters to the young ones, our grandson enjoyed it every night we were there. The food was really good, the buffet extensive. Not enough beach chairs, though we were there during high season so hard to judgel

Excellence Playa Mujeres: Amazing resort
I absolutely loved the Excellence Playa Mujeres! I have been to many all-inclusive resorts, and I have never met such friendly and happy staff. They go out of their way to make your stay perfect. The resort is gorgeous and very well maintained. Loved the rooms! The food was some of the best I've ever had at an all-inclusive resort. We ate breakfast and lunch every day at Toscana, and the menu always changed. Dinner we did at the a-la-carte restaurants and we were never disappointed. We didn't tr[... read more]y the Lobster House because we ran out of days. I would definitely go back!

The resort was beautiful..the grounds were always clean, the workers always friendly, the food was amazing, the pool was great. Big resort so alot of walking. Only disadvantage is there was no WIFI..you could purchase it but it only would do one device. The ocean was warm but had alot of weeds in it..kids loved the beach volleyball and the drinks were really good also.

Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen: Wonderful food and service!!!!
We are a family of 5 that recently stay at the Gran Porto Real on the Mayan Riviera and loved every minute!!! We were there over the Christmas Holidays and everyone there made us feel right at home. The staff are extremely courteous and obliging, always looking out for you. Our rooms were very clean. We had two rooms and had trouble trying to open the adjoining door, but staff never gave up until they finally got the right key to open it up, joking with us along the way. The food was well prepar[... read more]ed and well presented with much variety and a 24 hr. snack bar that was well stocked with food, desserts, wine, liquors, coffee and cold pop. This was great for my kids who made numerous midnight snack trips down there. They have a lot of activities and really engage their guests as well as nightly performances of various music from Mexican, mariachi to current music. The only reason why I didn't give it a 5 star is because there was seaweed along the beach portion near the pool area which made it a bit smelly, so we stayed on the other side of the beach which was o.k. They need to clean that up and remove the sand bags that are there then it will be a.o.k. I tip my hat off to our agent Jen who was able to put this trip all together for us on such short notice when no one else could!!! :)

Bahia Principe Explore Coba: great resort
Excellent value for the money paid. We were upgraded upon check in at no additional cost. Only downside is this is four resorts in one, and the size is a bit overwhelming. Made getting around a bit tough at times. Overall great resort tho, and spectacular golf course!

Catalonia Yucatan: Good resort, great location
Catalonia Yucatan is at a great, clean, secure location in Puerto Aventuras close to Playa del Carmen and near lots of great excursions. Food was good (esp al la cart, 4 times in seven days), although the buffet will get a little boring if you eat there a lot I imagine. Bars were good with lots of selection. Beach was small and not great, but if you do a lot of excursions like us that is not really a problem. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

El Cozumeleno Beach: Different than other Resorts
There were many things that were unexpected on this trip. The unlimited free room service was awesome, I wish we knew about it from the beginning or we would have had breakfast everyday in our room. No fridge, coffee maker, or iron in the room. 2 room temperature bottles of water given everyday. Great view from the room. Pool was very cold; the ocean was warmer. Pool side service was amazing, they brought you drinks and food right to your chair. Snack bar was ok, it really only had nachos, hot d[... read more]ogs, lunch meat, and buns; sometimes chicken nuggets and only once did it have french fries. Beach restaurant at lunch was pretty good, the only thing was if you ordered off the menu it took forever. The dinner buffet wasn't very good at all. There is only one a la carte restaurant and sometimes it took a long time to get food and the menu wasn't the best. You have to line up by 8 am to get a reservation and most people were lined up by 7 am and waited around for an hour to reserve, one morning it was as early as 6:30 that people started to line up. We ordered room service a couple of times for dinner.
New Years Eve was a real disappointment. They had a "party" set up in the banquet hall that had no windows to the outside an consisted of tables and chairs and a band. No fireworks, no champagne (unless you wanted to spend $35 for a $5 bottle or $150 for a better bottle). We ended up sitting on our balcony and watching the fireworks coming from the mainland. Last year we were at a resort on the mainland for New Years and it was an amazing party so we were really disappointed.
Very relaxing, the usual activities throughout the day: volleyball, aqua aerobics, yoga, bingo, etc. The mini put was really good, well maintained and a challenge to play; hole 14 was out of service though.
The beach has a lot of sea shells and sometimes glass, my husband cut his foot on a shell while playing volleyball and actually found glass in the court as well. The ocean was awesome. While you are swimming you will be swarmed by tons of fish, kids would love it (I loved it!). Sometimes there would be a strong smell of sulphur coming from next door which was unpleasant.
We would probably go back to this resort, but not during New Years. Knowing what we know now, it would make the trip better the next time. Communication between guests and the resort was lacking, a lot of things would have been better had we known about them.

Bahia Principe Explore Coba: Fantastic Family Getaway!
We traveled to the Grand Bahia Principe Coba over the holidays and loved the resort, food and beach! Great for families and kids especially the pools which were not too deep and the waterpark area. Buffet was a huge hit with our children (4 & 7yrs) and the a la carte dinners were very accommodating to ensure our girls enjoyed (if your kids don't have adult palates they offer kids menus at the a la cartes). New Year's Eve buffet was out of this world (my DH would return just for this!) All the st[... read more]aff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful and it is really clean. The only issue we had was that the bar refill (water, beer, snacks) which were included in the package were not done consistently everyday so we had to often ask for these items. That said they always brought them when asked and it definitely didn't hamper our fun. Weather was great (although, they have no control over that) and we would definitely go back to this resort

Riu Emerald Bay: get what you pay for!
The hotel was so so. Check in was seamless and fast however but the airport home was a mess and they took us 4 hours early and there was a food cart only passed security that charged 14 American for two bags of chips and a beer. That was the worst exit of a country ever terrible, terrible, terrible waiting 3 hours with no food or drinks but from a cart and with a pregnant friend traveling with you not a healthy situation. Please warn people to eat before security. The hotel was Good for families[... read more] not good for young people at all. Very quiet maybe ok for couples but alot of kids and locals. The hotel was so quiet everything was shut down and sooooo quiet by 10 pm! Services in restaurants and bars sucked and they certainly catered to the local patrons. Canadians were always last to be served even when standing in line with tip money in hand ! Food was horrible!!!! there was variety but not great quality... I ate pasta for dinner for a week. The al a carte restaurants were awful as well. The Italian one was only a buffet and a worse buffet than the normal one! And most nights they were closed, reservations were only taken in days they give you. Night shows were boring and the drinks were not great either. Coffee was disgusting!! I have stayed in many riu hotels and this was not what a riu standard I have seen. Late night snacks were meat and bread buns left in a fridge all day and molded fruit! there was also a sexual assault on the beach of a fellow Canadian that was sad and disrupting to say the least, hotel staff did what they could to help so at least that. But all and all the view and beaches were spectacular and a great little market and restaurant was near by was a great reprieve from hotel food but everything was actually super expensive to our suprise so it's good we paid so little for our trip! If it was more than 1000 I think I would have been severely disappointed for sure, however we got an amazing deal and we got away and had a nice relaxing vacation. So for 880 all in including everything I can't complain too much! :) lol definitely checked off the bucket list and won't be back to mazatlan. But a good experience and met alot of new friends that we are still talking to daily.

Excellence Playa Mujeres: Most Excellent vacation - would go back anytime.
We stayed at this resort over new years 2014/2015 for 7 days.
Pros: lots of staff to take care of your needs, both food, amenities etc.
Options for breakfast and lunch that aren't buffet.
We really liked the French and Mexican restaurant for the best dinners and a la carte menus.
The Indian restaurant was fairly decent if you don't get that type of food in your local area. We get spoiled in Toronto with great Indian restaurant choices but by no means was it bad.
We stayed in building #7 which w[... read more]as the right distance from the main activities and the pools/beach. In the evenings if you went to bed a little early the noise was no issue from the theatre or the patio bar.
Felt very secure and protected for my personal safety. Of course in any location watch your belongings and be aware.
The beaches were well kept and virtually always could get a place to relax. It was windy during the days we were there but we were still able to go into the water to cool off.
We rented a catamaran one afternoon with another couple and headed to Isle Majueres, which included some snorkeling time and walking around the town on the island. It was a chance to get away from the resort without being on a crowded boat. ( yes crowds on the island)
The location is roughly 30 minutes from the Cancun airport, and roughly 20 minutes from the Cancun strip if that's your thing.
Cons - minor things
Food -
Sometimes the staff at the grill for breakfast as more than a little slow. I know I'm on vacation but "today" would be nice to get my order.
I would have liked to have seen more fresh fruit offered outside the buffet in Tuscana
I personally didn't like the Italian/Mediterranean restaurant called Barcelona, we ate their once and our group wasn't impressed by it's menu.
Towel Collection - the staff is regimented about collecting towels off loungers even if you just put them out sometimes. It can be annoying being that over zealous.
Guest Tipping - I did find that this time around more and more guests were tipping the staff during the week, people can do as they please but it does create a bit of expectation from some of the staff members. Yes we did tip at some of the special events but not for every time a drink was made. This wasn't the case when we stayed at the Excellence River Maya.
Overall - both myself and my wife would go back to this resort anytime we had the money to do so. I rated it 4 stars on value because who wouldn't like something cheaper right. :)

Iberostar Waves Tucan: Iberostar Tucan Vacation
I went to the Iberostar Tucan December 15 for 1 week. Had a room closest to the beach and pool area. That was great. The pool is beautiful, beach amaizing and close to Playa des Carmen which is a must for shopping. If you g0 in the evening lots of nice restaurants and bars. The pool bar is gorgeous but set back and separate from the main pool area. The hotel is really set in a jungle type setting which isn't my style but the location of the room made up for it. Staff great and the food was great[... read more] too, even the desserts. Nice size, easy to walk back and fourth. Great for children because of the jungle. The room itself was perfect. The walkin shower great. Once again if your looking for a beautiful view from your balcony this hotel may not be for you. It is truly more of a jungle type view but the room was perfect.

Excellence Playa Mujeres: Another great stay at an Excellence Hotel
This was our second time staying at an Excellence Hotel, our first was at the Excellence Mayan Riviera. Both stays were great. the Excellence Mujeres is newer but the rooms are slightly smaller. The grounds at the hotel were immaculate and beautifully maintained. We stayed in building seven which is basically in the middle so everything was quite close. The beach area is lovely with plenty of beach chairs and huts along with a small bbq area for lunch and on beach bar service. We were there duri[... read more]ng the holiday season and the resort was at 96% capacity but it never felt overcrowded and we always found a place by the pool or on the beach and no you don't have to go down at 7:00 am to put a book on a chair to reserve your spot. We would eat breakfast, walk along the beach then find a good spot in the sun or shade and spend the day as we pleased. As an all inclusive cocktails and drinks are an important part of the stay so my advice is to request what brand of alcohol you would like in your drink. If you want premium they have it, you just need to request it. We did notice that there was a definite lack of fresh fruit in the drinks. A few years ago when you ordered a "Banana Monkey" they actually put a real banana in the drink, now it's a pre mix which is disappointing. So we stuck to mojitos with a premium 12 year rum and they were delicious. I do think the resort could work a bit on the cocktails as drinks were inconsistent from one bar to the next. We enjoyed the food at the Mexican restaurant which makes sense since you're in Mexico. The French restaurant was also very good as was Spice. Lunch at the Grill was okay but nothing too special. We liked that you could order chips, pico de gallo and guacamole at any time throughout the day to wherever you were sitting- poolside or on the beach. We did see a lot of tipping going on and this most certainly did affect the service you received as you would expect. But service levels were pretty good even without tipping. Canadians get a bad rep for not tipping as much as Americans however what most fail to remember is that the Canadians are paying more for the same vacation as their American counterparts.
And as a final tip- Don't forget anything at the pool or beach which is an easy thing to do after a few drinks. The concept of lost and found is not something they grasp. It's more like lost and gone which we learned the hard way two days in a row. Crews clean up and either keep it or throw it out. And I can't help but comment on the review from the English couple about how this hotel is not 5 star. It's Mexican All inclusive 5 star not Thailand or Fiji 5 Star. But I do agree the amenities were lacking so bring your own soap, shampoo, conditioner creams etc.
