El Dorado Casitas Royale: Good resort with some annoying things
Overall a really great time. Biggest annoyance is their concierge service. They MAKE you book things through the concierge and every time, he tries to sell you up on something (join the resort club, buy a special dinner table, come on this tour, etc.) Once you learn that by day 2, it's pretty easy to avoid it. Service was hit and miss. Sometimes the people were awesome and great; sometimes they were grumpy and off-putting. Room service took anywhere between 25 mins and 2 hours so just make sure [... read more]you know that before you order room service. With that said... Food was great. Rooms were great. Pool was great. Resort grounds were beautiful. Shuttle service across the resort was always east to get. I don't think we will be back, but I would still recommend this resort to people who enjoy good food and enjoy relaxing.

Ocean Riviera Paradise: I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESORT
THE RESORT IS BEAUTIFUL AND LOTS O OFFER. I HAVE BEEN IN THIS RESORT 3 YEARS AGO AND ENJOYED EVERY MOMENT. UNFORTUNATELY, ITS COMPLETELY CHANGED. TO RESERVE A SPOT IN ONE OF THE RESTAURANTS, YOU HAVE TO BE IN LINE AND WAKE UP AT 7AM AND STILL, SOMETIMES WE DID NOT SUCCEED IN RESERVING A SPOT. (THE RESTAURANTS IN THE EVENING ARE HALF EMPTY BUT THEY WILL NOT LET YOU IN IF YOU DID NOT BOOK IT IN THE MORNING)
WAITING TIME TO GET A CREPE OR A COFFEE COULD BE UP TO AN HOUR. THE KIDS CLUB TEAM ARE NOT[... read more] AS ACTIVE AS THEY WERE. TIME WAS WASTED ON WAITING .
ALSO, THE WATER IN THE POOL WAS SO COLD. I EXPECT THEM TO WARM IT UP A BIT WHEN YOU PAY $10000 ON 7 DAYS VACATION
I WILL NEVER COME BACK
Hello,
We staid in standard level of the Maya Beach and our rooms (2) were clean but out dated ( humidity smell in one and water flies in the other one!). We were told that Beach romes were renovated, but I think this applied only the Premium level ones! The Landscape around the building is beautiful, and we always feel safe. the beach is nice and clean, but lots the beach is suffering from erosion and lost of rocks, but still beautiful and enjoyable. Great snorkeling right from the [... read more]beach! Great vacations, good location is you don't want to leave the resort.

El Dorado Seaside Palms: A Quiet Hideaway
I was impressed all around with the resort. We stayed on the Palms side in the 3700 series rooms (not oceanfront nor swim out although we did have a nice size balcony). The food was fantastic, drinks plentiful and the rooms spacious and clean. We had no issues making reservations for the various restaurants (there was only two of us), our favourite was the Pub and the Asian. Breakfast we were at the Market Buffet and loved it. We are Canadian and enjoy my Caesar drinks. They have a no name [... read more]clamato Juice and some seasoning jug so not too bad except they use salt for the rim instead of celery salt. The beach, smaller swimming area, shallow but perfect to slip into and cool off. Take your snorkelling equipment as not available to rent. The beach beds were plentiful and free (except a few for premium guests which were well labelled). Lots of lounge chairs. No crazy saving of chairs needed (although a few guests did) Lots of various areas to hang out on the beach, find your own which matches your mood. Aqua fitness with G from Netherlands was great and memorable. Lots of staff, always a greeting, helpful and smiling. A few activities during the day if you wish. OK shows at night. Nothing memorable. Didn't partake in the bars. Did hear a few guests complain about the noise from the bar at night and their rooms were moved as it went until 2 pm. Felt very safe, nice paths, great night lighting in the foliage. A marked 5 km course for joggers or walkers. A bit of a transfer trip to and from the airport (1.5-2 hours) depending if you have other guests at various resorts to drop/pick up and traffic. I would go back again. Danielle at Trip Central was helpful throughout the process of deciding which resort would be a good fit for us.

Barcelo Maya Beach Resort: Lovely grounds
The Barcelo grounds are lovely...food could be improved in the buffet as the warming trays don't keep anything hot. Very difficult to get reservations in the a la carte..lucky to get a 9pm reservation. Check in took over 3 hours...needs improvement. The wait staff are nice but reception needs to work on their people skills and communication. I've been here 6 times but it will be my last sadly unless things change.

Akumal Bay Beach and Spa Resort: Very Quiet Resort
We waited quite a few years to book Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness & booked it for our 20th Anniversary. The main reason we went there was for the snorkeling & although the ocean was stirred up we still saw turtles, lots of different coloured fish & some coloured coral.
As for the resort the room was dated but the bed was comfortable & the A/C worked great, lots of hot water, good maid service & daily refill of water. We were in building 1 & it was quiet with a good view as per our request. It wa[... read more]s good to have our own chairs on days we couldn’t get a beach chair.
The food at the Buffett was good & there was a good variety.we only went to 1 a’La carte.
To solve the problem with getting a beach chair in the morning we were forced to be out there by 7 am. Not something we enjoy but it solved the issue. Other days we were usually able to get chairs by lunch time.
We read a lot about the service in the restaurants before we went but found the service at one so slow we got up & left after 15 min when our order had not been taken. In the Buffett the service got much better after it was discovered that we tipped. At first we truly felt invisible.
We wanted a massage but they were $120 US which is over 165 Canadian & we couldn’t pay that price for a 50 min massage.
Being able to use the washer & dryer was nice.
All in all we wouldn’t return but in 20 years have only gone to 3 resorts more than one time so that isn’t odd for us.
The resort has no lights at the entrance to mark its location so our driver went past it & had to back up. They need to fix that .
We found the resort very quiet & laid back, the beach is gorgeous & water amazing & for that we will go back to Mexico ! We love it there.

Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda: Stellar Staff but the resort stinks, literally.
To begin our holiday, Air Canada informed us at 11:57 pm on Dec 18 that our flight on Dec 19 at 3:30 pm was delayed four hours. This meant we arrived at the resort at 3:00 am on Dec 20 th - not off to a great start! There were two staff to greet us in the darkened lobby and we were given our room keys and discovered our teenagers would be five rooms away from us despite the travel agents request for adjoining rooms. We were told to show up in the morning to see if we could switch. We were given[... read more] and a map with the promise of a golf cart pick up to bring us to our rooms. After a long wait, we decided to find the rooms ourselves. We located the building and found our rooms. When we opened the doors, the putrid stench of sewer gases overwhelmed us. Opening the balcony doors, turning on the ceiling fan and covering bathroom drains, spraying deodorant and cologne did not remove the stench. It was overpowering despite being on the seventh floor. At 8:00 am, I went to the front desk to request a change and was told to return at 3:00 pm as there would be people checking out. At 3:00 pm, I returned and the front desk person offered me two rooms in building 6 but one room was on the first floor and the other was on the fourth floor- no adjoining rooms were available. I explained we were travelling as a family with minors, bus she would not budge and said we could keep our current rooms. I asked to see the supervisor and was told it was not possible. Finally, she flipped the paper over and offered a suite in the 4 the building but we’d have to use the sofa bed as there was only a King bed. They would provide another bed for us. We accepted and retrieved our luggage from the smelly rooms. By 8:00 pm, after several calls to the front desk, we got sheets and a blanket for the sofa bed but no additional bed was available. The sofa bed had seen better days about 10 years ago and the flat piece of foam did not provide any comfort from the bars and wires. After an uncomfortable night, we put the mattress on the floor the next day as there was still no extra bed available again. The suite’s saving grace was a swim up pool and two bathrooms with no sewer gas smell. On our fourth night, I flagged down a staff person in the hallway and explained our situation about the bed and later a twin bed was delivered.
There are things people should know before booking:
The smell: The stagnant sewage water and smell does appear unexpectedly throughout the resort. Guests in blocks 6 & 7 complained of the smell.
Walking: The resort has many pathways to walk and tons of greenery making it very beautiful. The walk can be long depending on where your room is located. There are three golf carts that randomly stop to shuttle people to and from the beach. The VIP cart drives fast and can run you down if you aren’t on the lookout, and often drives empty despite people requesting rides.
Poolside Chairs: There are limited chairs and waking up early at 6:00 am to save chairs is necessary. We witnessed people bringing snack bar chairs, and several arguments over chairs that were saved, then taken. This is unpleasant and unnecessary. The management could provide more chairs.
The beach: Not. There are breakwater walls and 3 piers, 2 without access, and brown water over a rocky bottom. It just looks neglected. To swim, walk down either direction to the next resort’s beach.
Entertainment: The evening entertainment venue is small and very hot. We tried to attend each night and left early very disappointed by the quality.
The Staff (other than management): The bar, poolside server staff, poolside entertainment and buffet staff are exceptional people who make up for management’s shortcomings.
Overall, there are simply too many negatives at Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda!

Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa: Beautiful Resort BUT! make sure you get what you paid for. We had to complain and fight for what we paid for on the 4th day after discovering we had not
Review of Royalton Riviera Resort in Quintana Roo
The resort itself was immensely spacious, beautiful, clean and wonderful. Amenities were great and food was varied and delicious. Check in staff and butlers leave something to be desired.
We were given a room that was not within the designated Diamond Club area, where we had paid an extra to be located. We were put in the main general area with kids, whereas the Diamond Club area was more exclusive, secluded and further way from the lobby[... read more]. We were told the amenities were exactly the same and we had access to them, and if they were, why the extra $? The two butlers knew that we were put into a room in building 7 not in the designated Diamond Club area, Building 4,5 & 6 and because we did not know this until 4 days later and didn’t complain, they thought we were ok with it. People we met told us about the designated Diamond Club area, the premium beverages, the pools, the better TV channels, the free mini bar and snacks refilled daily in our room etc. Location is everything, and if we paid $ extra to be in the Diamond Club area, that’s where we should have been placed. Evidently, the resort was overbooked, but no one told us that and hence Pamela at the Diamond Club reception area put us in the general area, also without telling us the truth. On day four, they moved us into the Diamond Club area (buildings 4-6) in building 6 at 5pm only after we complained. Pamela blatantly lied to our faces and denied any mistake whatsoever. As compensation, Pamela gave us a wristband that allowed us access to the Hideaway amenities. We believe a complimentary excursion would have been better compensation. The new room they moved us to had a ceiling fan, really powerful air conditioning and a better mattress and better semi ocean view. The process to move rooms took 5 hours as we had to pack up all our belongings, then unpack everything – precious time wasted from our vacation not to mention the stress and having to wait hour for our luggage to be moved. Also no apology from Pamela.
Also, a surprise was that we were assigned 2 butlers, one for daytime and one for evening. It’s nice to have butlers, IF YOU NEED THEM, but we could have gotten on fine without them. One did reserve the restaurants for us, and got us extra hangers, but they did not give us the introduction to the resort, which includes scanning the QR code on the TV that lists the perks of Diamond Club and included items that were free as they were supposed to as they said they were busy which we discovered on the 5th day Also, the typical tipping amount is 5% of the daily room rate. We gave them $50.USD each, and only one gave us a thank you. For service rendered. Nothing is mentioned on the resort website about butlers and the added cost for their services. Cleaning staff I understand, but butlers are just another cash grab for the majority of services we could have done ourselves.
Some resorts are Honest and up front upon check-in and automatically place you where you should be and upgraded for the inconvenience without having to complain. This one is not one of them.

Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya: Smaller Adult resort
We truly felt this resort could have had more. There wasn’t much to do (no snorkelling or water catamarans) and once the evening shows were done around 9:30-10pm it became quite quiet. There isn’t much in the way of restaurants there, so after day 3 you’re repeating the same foods. They did have evening shows but very unlike the larger resorts types of shows. The hotel team members are extremely nice and friendly and the rooms were stocked daily. This resort is spic and span.
The beach was just[... read more] okay to walk along and a lot of the beach to the right of the resort was littered with plastics, shoes, & toothbrushes washing up on the shore so it’s ideal to wear shoes on that section. If you’re going to this resort 5 days would be a perfect amount of days.
