Another great time

Went back for the 3rd time at this resort and was very pleased. My room was beautiful and the maid cleaned it every day. I was in room 2410, very quiet, overseeing the palm trees, the pool and the ocean. This resort is small and very friendly. Food was okay. I only stayed 4 days and 3 nights. Loved it that there were not many mosquitoes around. The beach is one of the best features of this resort. Wish we didn't have to pay 2 CUC for 1 hour of wifi and doesn't work. FAIR RESORT

Beautiful grounds with lots of shady trees.spacious lobby areas with comfortable seating and helpful staff at the front desk.large rooms with colorful walls and a beautiful balcony..my table lamp was plugged having only 1 prong.cord was never replaced.after your first day no more bottled water is given.some tables in buffet were in unsanitary conditions with food particles left on tablecloth.

Amazing value!

Overall, we had a fun and enjoyable family vacation at the playa de oro. Yes, overall the resort is a 3 star. It is outdated and needs a major renovation. The beach and pool area is where we spend most of our time. Fun times! Good value!

Hotel

People were amazing, Food can't complain, the atmosphere great. I wish they had a better way to anaunce the events, I missed a couple because I never new about them. The one thing really bather me was the water in the room, so little in the sink and the shower it was sooo difficult to take a shower or wash your hands. For the rest, I can wait to go back.

Would not go back

The resort had restrictions on everything- even water. Three bottles of water are supplied to your room the first day then I had to buy water for the remaining days. Food was always not available as they have set amounts for each day. For example they only have fifty hot dogs for the whole resort for lunch and when they are gone they don't make anymore. Each bar is only equipped with one bottle of each alcohol a day and when it's done it's done. I literally would jusy go to the bar and ask for t [... read more]hem to give me whatever was remaining because I got so sick of them saying no to every drink I would ask for. And I mean basic drinks like vodka tequila wine etc. There was no entertainment crew on the resort getting people involved. Well there was but they were always next to impossible to find so I wouldn't even count them as staff. The food at the beach buffet was left out in the sweltering heat, not covered and covered in flies. The beach is nice but there is no bar right on the beach and only one washroom right by the front lobby so u need to walk back that way to use the facilities. The resort is very run down and is not maintained. My rooms phone didn't work and the shower overflowed into my room for five days until someone fixed it because of drainage issues.

Amazing resort

Everything about this resor that was awesome!! I'll definitely be back, and would 100% recommend to anyone! I miss the coffee bar already! All employees of the resort work very hard! Breath taking outstanding performanceservice every night! Loved the live life of the resort!! My expectations were exceeded!!

Have to warn you

The resort rations everything and runs out all the time....hot dogs, any type of alcohol, etc. Are all rationed and we are told they are out. But big tippers get them. Managers tell workers infront of us to tell us they are out of that specific alcohol in Spanish and we had a friend who understood Spanish. Drain was clogged in shower and overflowed into the room causing flooding...complained about it 4 times before it was fixed. Workers would just say okay and go back to work. VACATION = SUCCESS

Before heading out on our vacation, i did look up reviews of Playa De Oro and was a bit leary on what to expect. We arrived there in the early hours of the morning and got checked in at a fast pace, had our baggage brought up to the room for us. We at first experienced our door key lock not working and the safe was not working. With in ten minutes after calling front desk this was fixed and dealt with almost immediately. We always had someone seat us for supper and little to no wait for drinks at the bar. The resort is small enough that after a day or two of being there the staff got familiar with us and made us feel so at home. There is tons of options for food even for the picky eaters. We had a group of four of us and everyone was completely satisfied with everything at our hotel. Keep in mind it is Cuba and sometimes things just are not the same as home, so if thats what your expecting.... Stay home. We found this place to be personal, clean, friendly, and accommodating. The pool was clean and the beach was AMAZING. They have security at the beach so we always felt safe leaving our stuff to take a dip. They offer free paddle boating and kayaking on the beach as well. We would go back here in a heartbeat for how well we were treated during our stay. The maids always had clean towels and bedding in our rooms. Our room was perfect as well as clean. We all left there missing the place before we boarded our plane. Cant wait to go back and see the great staff that helped make our trip great. Trip Central was also amazing to book with and helped make booking so easy and answered all questions we had before we headed out on our trip. all around we were all VERY SATISFIED with everything from the booking of the trip, to the trip its self.

Beautiful beach

Hotel was perfect size, everything you would need was onsite. Staff did not hide that they could help themselves to the products that were intended for guest. We did not receive any water in our room that was to be included daily, a full new roll of toilet tissue would have been really nice, instead of half rolls from today's checkouts..and bedclothes that fit the bed,,king bed had queen bottom sheet and single top sheet, filthy bedspread. Average Cuban resort

Having travelled to Cuba 8 times before, I knew what to expect from the average 4 star resort. This place was at par as far as food and grounds. The beach was fantastic, lots of Sun huts available which was nice. I was disappointed with the towel service and availability of towels in general, for both the room and the beach towels. The staff were not as friendly as I have experienced previously, but I noticed a fair bit of younger college/university students on the resort (due to exams just fini [... read more]shing) so I wondered if they were not receiving many tips. All and all, this resort was decent. We never got sick, we had the normal average Cuban food, and the beach was amazing as always. I would recommend to anyone looking for a trip that was priced right for some good sun and fun! I recommend going to the Beatles Bar, super fun!

Amazing!!

The hotel rooms were not too bad and neither was the food the beach was absolutely incredible! The staff was a little rude especially the front lobby people but overall I had an amazing trip and will be returning!

Never go back!

The beach was amazing! But that is about it, the service is horrible! They advertise a swim up bar that they don't serve at, what a waste of space. They have this beautiful fountain in the pool with seats and jets that they don't turn on to save electricity. So the entertainment crew told us, if it wasn't for them my trip would have been a bust!! The food was nothing to write home about but that seems to be the norm for Cuba. Good resort

The grounds were well kept The pool was clean The beach was beautiful The rooms could use a bit of a face lift but the maid kept it clean The food of course was not the greatest but we did always manage to find something to eat. Great week on the beach!

We had a great week on this resort. I will start with the fact that the rooms were OK at best, but fortunately I didn't go for the rooms, I went for the beach and the beach was fabulous! The maid service in mine and my husbands room was A+, although my parents were in a room in a different building and they did have some trouble with getting towels, hot water and a few other hiccups. I would highly recommend eating at the lobby buffet or the beach buffet instead. The food otherwise was pretty good in comparison to resorts I have visited in the past and in comparison to the horror stories I have heard about food in Cuba. The grounds were nice and pretty well kept. I did notice staff cleaning the lobby well every morning, unfortunately the people staying on the resort are careless and leave quite a mess for the morning cleaning crew. The coffee bar has the best coffee! We came to know our wait staff at the buffet on first name basis! Lazara at breakfast is a beautiful soul! Orlando at supper was so kind and helpful! We met so many wonderful people at this resort and I hope we can get back again some day! We also learned so much about the people and their culture. I wasn't a huge fan of the drink menu overall, I prefer slushie drinks, but the sangria is pretty good! The ala cart in the lobby was good, but nothing overly exciting. We didn't try the others. The band that played at lunch at the beach buffet was amazing! And the beach staff were fun and enthusiastic! My lovely dance partners from two separate occasions (I didn't get their names) were a real treat and I am so grateful for their time and dance lessons. There were certainly things that didn't go quite as planned, but overall we had a beautiful stay, we met beautiful people and I would totally go back!

Great resort

This was are third time at this resort It still has its small resort charm .clean .Very friendly staff. food is great.the beach is beautiful and close .Will be going back for are forth visit next year

May as well book your trip in the ghetto! Worst hotel ever!!!!!

I stayed at Hotel Playa De Oro from April 15-22/2017. I have been to cuba 2 other times at different resorts and decided to take my 5 year old daughter to Cuba Varadero for her 6th birthday. Not only was this the worst resort I have EVER experienced, we were treated with the utmost disrespect. This hotel is rated by Air Transat Vacations as a 4 star. I feel completely deceived by Air Transat Vacations for telling its customers this hotel is rated a 4 star, when I would not give it a 1 star. Plea [... read more]se see below the issues I experienced on my $1,900 vacation for just myself and my 6 year old daughter. Please keep in mind that I am not a prissy, nit picking traveler and always make the best of it, but this was unacceptable. 1. The staff was rude, disrespectful. Staff would ignore you, roll there eyes at you and make you wait for 30+ minutes for food or drinks on a daily basis.Staff put no effort into having quick service, or any service at all for that matter! We were treated as a nuisance every single day by mostly all staff and weren't even given the basics . 2. When arriving at the hotel, staff did not greet us and had us wait over an hour to get our room key at 11pm at night. There was no priority for children even though I was part of the kids club with Air Transat. They put us in a room with no working TV, no phone and dirty bed sheets that smelled like sweat. The room was filthy and not cleaned. The towels had stains and also smelled like sweat. 3. The hotel did not have hot/warm water and we had to shower with COLD water the ENTIRE week and so did everyone else in the resort. That was the worst part of our trip. I'd say. 4. They would not bring us toilet paper or clean towels after asking. We were left with no towels and toilet papers for days. They just never came!? 5. There was barely no phone service, no working hotel phones, and no WIFI. The WIFI cards that were purchased also didn't work. 6. There was 1 buffet in the lobby that was way over packed. I would wait over 30 minutes for basic eggs. There was no bacon, no sausage, and the scrambled eggs were always with filled to the top of the container with water. There was no options for food other than waiting for fresh cooked. The dishware was dirty and would find lipstick regularly on the utensils or glasses. They reused plastic cutlery as we would also find lipstick on the plastic cutlery. 7. The snack bar: It had a beautiful menu with several food options. NONE of them were EVER available the entire week other than hot dogs and ham sandwiches. The breakfast in the buffet at the lobby ends at 11am and if you miss it then you are stuck eating hot dogs or ham sandwich for breakfast. They do not service with French fries, it is services with soggy chips every single time. It was the worst snack bar I have ever experienced at any Cuban resort. We essentially lived off hot dogs because that is all you can get at off schedule buffet times. 8. A La Cart options: The food offered at the A La Cart restaurants was ALWAYS cold and was the exact same food served at the buffet. Extremely disappointing. The staff also booked us for 2 instead of 4 and then made us leave the restaurant because the staff made the error. They did not make place for us. Horrible. 9. The swim up bar and fountain advertised in the Air Transat ad is not functional. They will not serve you at the swim up bar, infact they will give you a dirty look and make you get out of the pool to be served. 10. None of the staff spoke English, including the health care center. My daughter had sun stroke so I took her to the hotel nurse to get some fever medication. I CLEARLY asked for fever medication ONLY. She didn't speak any English whatsoever. They could not take her temperature because they said the thermometer didn't work, tapped her stomach. She then gave me a bill for $150 Canadian dollars and ordered Ibuprofen, stomach medication, and ANTIBIOTICS? They ordered the medication without my permission then slapped me with that bill. I told them I did not want to give my daughter all of that medication and they became upset with me. It was a nightmare! 11. As Canadians we believed we could trust the hotel staff. We believe the hotel exchange rate would have to be followed accordingly. We did not know much about the Cuban Peso and didn't research the exchange rate before leaving as we trusted the staff would treat us fairly. We received $60.00 peso's back for our Canadian $100.00. We were deceived and stolen from regarding $$ and completely taken advantage of by the hotel staff. On our $100.00 we should have received over $1000.00 peso's in return!!!!!! I am only realizing this now that we are back. 12. To top it all off, Air Transat cancelled our flight to pick up Quebec residents instead of fly us out to Ottawa as scheduled during the evening and we were forced to stay another night in this horrifying hotel. Our flight was then delayed again at the airport. *************In conclusion this was the worst hotel I have ever been to in my entire life. Air Transat completely deceived all its customers by rating this a 4 star resort. This hotel should be rated 2 or less. It was horrible but the customer service was even worse than the hotel. This was a waste of my money and vacation. I will be leaving this review as many places as I possibly can to prevent from anyone else having to experience the horror we did.

Resort is outstanding! Staff are amazing! Love it there.

Food is good, staff try to accommodate in every way to make your stay memorable. That's why this was my 15th visit to this resort. All staff remember you from year to year.The beach is amazing! I would not vacation anywhere else!

Third visit. Sure to be a fourth !

This was our third visit to this resort. I found they had more flavour and spices in their food this time. Room was clean. Pool was clean. Beach still beautiful. Never went hungry. Service consistently good. Come to Cuba to experience their lifestyle not expect them to change to suit yours and your sure to have a great vacation

Very satisfed

Good people

The hotel needs some maintenance, beds need to be upgraded, but overall its well kept for the age of the building! I like the way the grass and trees are well kept and the staff seam to be on top of that well,
