Need a lot of TLC

Rooms are rundown, most of the resort didn't have hot water, no porters to take you to your room when you arrive a night, phones didn't work in the rooms, they ran out of towels and sheets, some of the towels either had rust stains or holes in them, internet is in Spanish and no tech to help you with problems, only one beer on tap and if you wanted their other brand you had to pay for it, food was the same day in and day out, most of the evening entertainment wasn't enough to keep you interested [... read more] in staying to watch. The good was the grounds were kept nice and the maid kept out room clean.

Beautiful Resort

Maid service clean your room everyday and always made sure you had plenty of toilet paper & bottle water in your fridge. Friendly staff always making you feel welcome, beautiful beach with plenty of chairs. Excellent food, the buffet has an awesome make your own pizza station, pasta bar and stir fry station. The grounds are well maintained and clean.

It was a good resort, but not 'impressing'

We spent a week at TRYP the 2nd week of January. With very friendly service and awesome staff at the meals, we were very impressed with the buffet & a la cartes. Our room was right by the main stage which made for louder evenings, and only cold showers. We loved the quiet pool as it was away from all the noise of the activities at the main pool - and the party animals. It also seemed that there were a lot of locals doing work there, but made you feel a bit insecure safety wise. Great great great [... read more] beautiful beach. Super close to the airport.

The Tryp Cayo Coco is a Great Resort

On arrival we learnt that the hotel was very old, the oldest in the area, but we found it reasonably comfortable. The bathrooms however need to be upgraded. Our rooms faced the quieter smaller swimming pool and from the balcony we could get a partial view of the ocean. The weather was great, mosquitoes however bothered us early mornings and late evenings. My children and grandchildren enjoyed themselves. For breakfast we enjoyed fresh fruits, omelettes and crepes. For lunch and dinner we enjoyed the fresh seafood and didn't mind the long line ups at the grill. The waiters were terrific and because we were a group of eight they would always reserve a table for us. There were three restaurants that required pre booking. The International, the Chinese and the Italian. There was also a Café which was open all the time and served good sandwiches. It was located quite near the entertainment area. They had evening shows every day which we attended. The kids shows pre-ceded the adult shows and the guests got involved in the shows . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Tryp Cayo Coco and will definitely go back to this part of Cuba again. The good value for money, the great beaches and the warm hearted friendly people make this a fantastic vacation.

Clean and adequate

My first time to Cuba and was satisfied with the trip as far as pricing went. The hotel was not over the top for me, the bathrooms in the rooms need updating but otherwise clean. The staff were absolutely fantastic, friendly and accommodating!

Great beach and amazing staff...some renos needed

Block we stayed in needs some major renos but cleaning lady was great and rooms were always clean. Grounds were nice, but some facilities(I.e. Gym and kids club) were non-existent. Public washrooms require more attention and themed restaurant (International) was anything but "special"...Overall staff though were very very accommodating and pleasant and the beach has to be one of the nicest in Cuba. Here's hoping the stage is already fixed :)

High & Low Season thats matter

Okay let me give the honest Review! After being visiting 45 countries my review on Tryp Cayo Coco Hotel. Food was good specially the sea food, like this hotel had crabs too, where some others hotel dont even have it even they are more stars rated ,but I fail to understand even when the rooms occupancy above 75% yet the food shortage was their likefor e.g the shrimps only those people would get at the BBQ If you are their at the very first hour of the dinner. Room toilet sucked the commode was working but dint have enough speed to flash the out put down lol I hope you got it what i mean, it was disgusting to see the thingy Floating . Night entertainers need more energy while performing. The money one pays in a high season I think its bit unfair but yes!it worth the price on a low season worth the money. ALL I WANT TO SAY I RESPECT THE HARD WORK AND THE EFFORTS THE CUBAN PEOPLE PUT !!THAT'S MAKE THE MAGIC WORKS!!

Great Value

The staff make the resort. Very personable. The Tryp has a friendly, intimate feel. Good food. Clean A lively place but if one prefers there is a quiet pool and quiet rooms away from the activities. I spoke to many return guests, and I can see why.

Great location. Had fun. Do not overpay

We new by previous reviews the resort was in need of renovations, which are currently being done. So I had no surprises or expectations of greatness, especially in the rooms. Therefore I enjoyed myself very much. The beach is wonderful especially when tide goes out. You gain about 30 feet of width of the beach. The swim up bar is fun and pool water is warm. Poor guys work hard and people never seem to think of taking a few pesos with them. The daytime is very active with people drinking and having fun. The evening of out first week was a little dissapointing as not much was goiing on. The second week they seemed to pump up the fun with a pool party. On Friday night a gUy comes and sings and plays guitar and it is lots of fun to sing and dance. But they need more of that. Seem to rely on the show for all the evening entertainment and then the disco. Which is really for the younger one. They have people playing musical instruments in lobby at night which is nice. The drinks are good, but they sometimes run out of glasses they need to make the right drink, like Spanish coffees. But you get over it and have it in a smaller cup. I would go back for a last minute cheap holiday. My husband would not. We went with 10 people and most would not return as sit has been allowed to get to run down over the years. Not enough was done to maintain it. My son is 26 and was bored, not enough activities, unless your main goal is to drink. I can't recommend this resort, but at the same time I would go back. Go figure...

Maybe someplace new next time.

I noticed immediately that the ownership has changed and the hotel is less up to standard than previously. They also gave no acknowledgement of return guests as the previous owners did. This was my forth trip there but I'll look for another resort in Cayo Coco now. The staff are still very good & the food was quite o.k. if you enjoy fish as I do. You would never go hungry. Awesome Trip

Travelled to TRYP Cayo Coco Nov.14 to 21 with my friend. Haven't been to Cuba in 8 years - first impression of this place the night we arrived was terrible. No help with luggage to our room, couldn't find out building number as it was dark, lugged our bags up 3 floors in the pitch dark. Room was not that great...(mind you I'm used to Mexico and DR 4 stars)....dropped our stuff off and went back to desk to ask for a room change. The pool was great and the ocean - beautiful. The beach is quite "short" as the tide is in mostly all day, but still enough room to lay out. We just had so much fun. Met great people. Food was pretty decent. The only issue i had was the buffett hours...breakfast was 7-10AM and then lunch didn't start until 130! so if you missed breakfast or ate really early, you were starving. Yes, they have a beach restaurant, but a lot of time, it was too packed for a table and even if you got one, you were waiting for service for quite some time. The times we did eat in the buffet for dinner and lunch were reeally good...awesome pizza that you can have made to order, past bar, sushi, etc. Really good! They are in the process of renovating/updating this resort, but you have to remember it's Cuba. They dont' have the money or resources that other countries do, but they're trying. Nothing's been done in 17 years here. I would definitley return though!

Location Location Location

Tryp Cayo Coco is in a great location. When they say 15 minutes from the airport it really is accurate. Resort is right on the beach and the pool is steps from the beach. Spending whole days in the sun by the pool with short trips to the beach was very restful. Big shout out to the operators of the Catamaran as they were pleasant, helpful and very quick to assist when someone is in difficulty. This day trip should not be missed. Another Huge shout out to Fis from the breakfast buffet. Fis made our daily omelets tasty and served them with flair and a huge smile. Food at the buffet was really good. The lobster dinner was not to be missed. I was disappointed with the a-la-carte's as well as the offering from the grill and the beach restaurant. Service at the bars was stellar. The gents who ran the swim up bar never tired and were full of smiles, chat and great and fast service. Main bar just lovely. The people there were willing to try to make you something special just for you. I was severely disappointed with the quality of the rooms. To say they were shabby was putting it mildly. There were extensive renovations going on while we were there. Apparently we were in the non renovated section. We had to change rooms after our first night as the room was either so heavily smoke in that the smell was permanently in the room or it was mold. We both had trouble breathing after the first night. We got a room in the same building, second floor, nice view, better smelling, just as shabby. Showers/bathrooms are in big need of repair/renovation. I have rated the service as only fair. This should not reflect on the bar/restaurant/beach or pool staff. My issue was with the front desk who were not friendly, happy and willing to try to assist us with having our room changed. I really had to push them hard and they had absolutely no sympathy for the fact that my boyfriend has asthma and had trouble breathing in the room we were assigned. It should also be noted that there are signs all around the pool that this is a no smoking zone. This was largely ignored by the patrons much to the dismay of us non smokers. More should have been done to ensure that non smokers rights to a smoke free vacation are taken into consideration. There should have been non-smoking rooms available and there should have been areas where smokers could congregate away from the non-smokers. We had a good time, however, this is more to do with us being able to make lemonade with lemons than anything else. We will not be recommending until at least the renovations are complete.

Amazing, fun,lots of entrainment

I traveled solo and had an excellent trip. My request for a different room was immediately done. New room was right on main floor at main pool area, close to all annenities. All employees were helpful and also had a smile. Excellent resort with 24 hour snack bar, never could go hungry or without a drink of water or beer, etc.

Good Quality for the price

Beach and pools were very nice! Rooms were quite outdated, but clean. Food was typically cold and the same each night. I have been to Cuba several times before, so I am well aware of the tasteless food, but this was probably the worst I have had so far. Older resort workers were very friendly and helpful - however found front desk to be a little rude as well as the beach bartenders. Was nice quick trip from the airport. Very "touristy" area. The staff are friendly

The resort is dated. However, the management and the staff have done their best to keep the facilities clean. On the activity board, they said there were tennis lessons everyday at 0900 however when I went there the court was empty. The beach was lovely and that was where I spent most of my time. I booked a trip to go to Havana and subsequently I was told that the plane was full and me and wife were bumped. Terrific Tryp

My husband and I travelled to the Tryp Cayo Coco Sept.29-Oct.6 2014 to surprise our friends who arrived there Sept.26....from the beginning we had a great trip flying with Sunwing airlines...when we arrived at the hotel I requested that we have a room closer to the lobby as bdlg 14 was too far for us to walk on a regular basis....the evening receptionist had no problems placing us in bdlg 6, our room was a little dated but had a great partial view of the ocean and full view of the pool, second f [... read more]loor....the next day they moved us to room 631...same floor but nicer room. Bith rooms were kept very clean by Evelyn, housekeeping she is amazing.....the restaurants at the Tryp are great.....the buffet for breakfast and lunch lots of choices, I always stick with the fresh eggs for breakfast, my husband loves the French toast and pancakes we always tip the chefs in buffets and food cooked perfectly Borges in the buffet makes sure that you feel like family everyday, male server works with Borges, also serves at beach restaurant for lunch great guy, sorry I did. It get his name. On the Friday beach restaurant La Picua opened for lunch....BBQ's outside with roasted pig and other goodies inside menu with pizza burgers etc. and huge lobsters for 10 CUC, delicious, after that the beach restaurant open everyday for lunch.....have been told they are going to rebuild this restaurant in the near future...we had dinner a few times at the international restaurant Lorenzo is in charge there and he is amazing also the food there is great....the main lobby bar lots of fun, staff there terrific Osmani the bartender very attentive and also the waitress staff there great, they also have cappuccino there all day, as well as down stairs there is a 24 hour snack bar with sandwiches, drinks and cappuccino early in the morning for early risers...I started to take the cups from the room down for morning coffee so wouldn't have to take plastics cups back to the room....we managed to get a reservation in the Japanese restaurant....again the food was fabulous very filling we had the chicken and vegetables and it was a lot of food, Brian and I ordered 1 rice to share and never even ate it....we went to the BBQ restaurant early before the Mosquitos got too bad as it is outside, again great....the chef heard us ask if they had salad, they did not but he made us a great tomato cucumber salad with a little oil and vinegar...delicious, food and service there also great....we were extremely happy with the hotel staff.....William and Gelly in customer service there anytime we had a question. Over all the hotel is a very attractive property and kept very clean. I have already recommended the Tryp to family members who travelled there in August

Excellent

Good service, great food, nice beach and fun pool bar. Toilets could use improvment though, so could care of animals found on site. Been there many times and will go back again. Good value for the buck.

Return trip, somewhat disappointing

I had gone back to Tryp because I enjoyed it so much the first time...all the animals, great BBQ restaurant, great beach, friendly staff. (I really place importance on having a coffee maker in the room, which they did but refused to supply me coffee because I wasn't a VIP member. I bought my own coffee and fashioned a filter from toilet paper) This time I went VIP class and there were no longer any coffee makers only water boiling kettles. They had apparently thrown out all coffee makers. The f [... read more]lamingoes were still there but no peacocks or ducks...a couple of cats and dogs; lots of chickens. I went to the BBQ restaurant and was greeted by a surly waiter who wouldn't let me sit down until he confirmed I had the appropriate reservation ticket. I decided to try the sausage and pork combo. The pork was fine but the sausage was like a cross between a hot dog and bologna. Someone looking official came into the restaurant (a staff member) who began talking with the waiter who then proceeded to neglect all patrons. After staring at my dinner plate that I was finished with for some time, I decided to move it across the table to the empty seat to send a message that I was done. No response. I threw my napkin on the seat and left. On the way out I heard another patron say "good for you". Other than that the staff were very friendly, accommodating and responsive.

Welcoming and Friendling Resort

The Grand Old Lady Is Beginning to Show her age.

Review for Tripadviser: WEATHER: We just returned from a stay from September 19th to 26th (two adults). Even though this is technically rainy / hurricane season, we have been going down to Cuba at this time for several years and have always had great weather, lots of sun, the occasional shower but mostly overnight. This year the average temperature was in the mid thirties but with the humidity felt like the mid forties. PRICING: Based on the current state of this resort (massive renovations / up [... read more]grading going on) we not prepared to pay 'full price', we purchased a 'last minute' package and got exactly what we paid for. TRIP DOWN TO CUBA: We flew Air Transat and were surprised that even though we flew during the dinner hour, we were not served a complimentary meal, we were told they no longer do that... you now have to purchase your food on these flights.. they did serve a non-alcoholic beverage and offered a small snack... this was a change from a year ago, but I was told by the cabin crew that no carrier offer complementary meals anymore (you may want to check with your carrier as this was news to us). The flight was smooth with just a little turbulence...HOWEVER... the landing was the worse I ever experience on any flight... on touch down the wheels hit the tarmac so hard everyone got a good jolt, this left some of us to wonder if the pilot didn't damage the plane...not good. IMMIAGRATION / CUSTOMS IN CUBA: Visitors to Cuba even non-nationals now have to fill out a 'Customs Declaration'... also one new level has been added upon entry, once you go through immigration, and move past the security into the baggage area, there is now a further area where Officers collect your Customs Declaration, we were not sure if the chaos that existed upon our entry into this area was due to the fact that the process is so new (just started Sept1st)...but there seem to be no system in place for handling this area yet.... the Officers literally just roped off the area near the exit doors and proceed to ask for the declarations as everyone left.. we never saw anyone have their baggage checked (not sure what the pluses of this process was... maybe like the 'medical insurance requirement', it is just something that someone thought up). ARRIVAL AT TRYP CAYO COCO: Nothing changed there and the check-in area seemed to move quickly. Some 'Repeat Guests' still get the express check-in where it is done for them prior to arrival, room keys are simply picked up at the Customer Service office (Ah La Carte reservations are also done for this group prior to arrival), it is my understanding that this VIP 'perk' is earned after your 7th visit to Tryp...I am not sure of the exact timing of this perk, but having been a repeat guest of this hotel since 1997 we have it....HOWEVER.....due to the massive renovations going on at this time, we are no longer guaranteed the rooms we requested... Many blocks are now closed off limiting the availability of 'choice rooms' but they do their best to accommodate all requests... we didn't get the room or the block we requested, but we got the next best thing, besides, there is really no 'bad location' at Tryp, depending on your need, some locations may just be more convenient than others. FACILITY: As mentioned, there is massive renovation of some rooms and buildings, while we were there certain blocks were completely closed off, the Beach Grill was also not operational. There is a new Beach Bar with limited seating capacity, our feeling was that while this was a good idea, logistically it was not thought through... for one, it is located on the beach right in front of building 5, so in addition to the people on the ground floor loosing the view of the ocean because of the height of the vegetation between the building and the beach (in my opinion, this area should be trimmed to a height where the view of the ocean is not obstructed), they now have this building obstructing their view, as well, the rooms on the second floor now look out onto the roof top of this building, and it is not the most attractive building...in addition, we felt that the 'BBQ Shack' should have been incorporated into this building, right now that little 'shanty' they use for the beach BBQ is not very attractive, besides it would have provided those on the beach with a place to get a quick burger or something hot to eat just steps away from where they were if they didn't want to leave the beach.. FOOD: Was the same as always 'average', there was always something to eat, we find breakfasts the best meal at the buffet, however there is always a variety at lunch and dinner... For the people who complain at the availability of food, I often wonder ... just what do they eat at home.. we can certainly find 'something' to eat... Our feeling is that in the off season, the food in the Ah La Carts is the same as in the buffet, just presented differently with a little more ambiance. THE BEACH: Is still one of the most gorgeous in the world (that's why we keep going back)... We have noted over the years that the 'tides have changed' resulting in some erosion of the beach area in certain parts, and loss of beach area at certain times of the day... PEOPLE THIS IS NO FAULT OF TRYP CAYO COCO this is Mother Nature doing her thing.... Having said that, it would appear that eventually some 'relocation' of some of the palapas may be required down the road, I am not so sure what this will do to blocks like building 5 which are already so close to the water's edge.... in retrospect some of the other hotels along this strip built later on may have had an advantage here as they were built further back from the beach, with the encroaching tide it may be easier for them to pull their palapas back when necessary. Never the less, we will still continue to make Tryp Cayo Coco our resort of choice. SERVICE: Even if low season, the service at Tryp was still 'top drawer'.. while the reduce staffing at this time of the year resulted in longer waits, or having to make special requests... once you articulated you need, the staff were only too happy to address you them...My advice to anyone going on vacation is to adjust your expectations to the time you year you go down, we always do and so are never disappointed or surprised. In retrospect... the grand old lady is beginning to show her age, both in the condition of the facility, and in the styling of the amenities, it is visible everywhere... however the administration seem to be addressing this, my only fear is that they are moving at too slow a pace for some of us and as result while some of us may keep returning because of the connections we have made there and the familiarity we have with this resort... others especially those going for the first time, may tend to be a bit more critical.. My suggestion would be to go to Tryp Cayo Coco with an open mind, if you can look past some of the 'cosmetic needs'...this is a wonderful resort, we will keep returning.
