Perfect honeymoon resort!

From start to finish, our trip to Akumal Bay was amazing. Service was excellent, food was great, location was incredible (snorkelling in particular) and the place was beautiful. I would recommend booking the penthouse suite, definitely worth it for the views from your private rooftop patio!

Amazing!

We recently visited this beautiful resort! We travel a lot, and stayed at many resorts before, but this was perfect!! The staff really cared about you, and really treated you like a queen and king! The rooms are very clean and zen like, they really pay attention to detail, as the entire resort is very zen and beautiful! We definitely will return! Best kept secret of the Mayan Riviera

My spouse & I stayed at this resort from March 5 to 12, 2016with my brother and his spouse. The four of us were very satisfied with our stay at the Akumal Bay. The rooms were very clean & spacious, the grounds well kept, and most of all we were very close to the beach. The staff were exceellent, and vere very impressed by the quality of the food at the buffet and the four a la carte venues.

Worth going back to

This year marked our 8th year in a row at Akumal. The resort has morphed from a 3-star to a 5-star resort, while still maintaining the personal touch of a small destination. Coming back to this laid-back place feels like home. The staff are welcoming, as is the food, the beach, and the fish out on the reef.

Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort - Excellent

This resort ticks all the boxes. Nice ocean view rooms. Great restaurants and service. Good entertainment . On a really nice stretch of beach. Premium drinks . We loved the Sushi bar. No need for dinner reservations .

Amazing beach

The hotel has been renovated and there was plenty of upkeep going on throughout our 2 week stay. Our room was comfortable, I was worried about the glass door for the toilet being that it was my first vacation away with my boyfriend, but it was not as bad as it appears. The Jacuzzi tub was great. We had a couple cooler nights and we took advantage of them by using the Jacuzzi. It wasn't the worst food I've had on vacation, but it wasn't the greatest either. Really no changes for breakfast. Lunch and dinner rotated as per the "theme" in the buffet. I never went hungry. My boyfriend is lactose intolerant and was given an allergy letter when we arrived. He was to show this to the head waiter at the buffet or al la carte for every meal and he would be shown what he could eat. After 3 days he found it was easier to stick to the things he was told about previously, such as the pasta bar or hamburgers for lunch and dinner. He had only one issue while we were there with the pasta bar. The gentleman cooking informed him the pasta was filled with meat only, no cheese. He even broke open one to show him the insides. My boyfriend ate the pasta, only to discover after my father tried the same type, that it was filled with cheese. There were no labels on the pasta themselves, only the mix ins. After trying to explain this to three staff in the buffet I went to the front desk. Unfortunately there was nothing that could be done for him at that point as he had already eaten it and just had to ride it out. The front desk told me they would follow up, but we never heard from them regarding the matter. We take some responsibility as he did not show his letter, however the staff should be educated more on dietary concerns and labels on the pasta to prevent any further issues. The al la cartes as first come first serve unless you are part of the fidelity club, then you can make reservations. We never listened to their presentation on becoming a member. The al la cartes open at 6. We found that if you were there when they opened you got in right away. Wait a bit and you were eating at 9 pm. The music at night was ok for the first couple nights, then it was the same set repeated. This is the first resort that I have stayed at that hasn't had any shows on in the evenings. They have a large theatre on the property where they used to do nightly shows (this was my parents third trip to this resort, first since the renovations and new management). They held a superbowl party in this theatre with game day food (wings, burgers, hot dogs, fries, chips, salsa and cheese sauce). We stayed for awhile but the chairs were too uncomfortable. It would be nice if they had some of the beach loungers up around the pool. They only have beds by the pool. Overall I was very impressed with the resort. Jacqueline from the entertainment staff is amazing. She remembers your name, where you are from and asks about your day whenever she sees you. She made the trip that much more exciting. Tim and Juan from the hotel excursion desk were great. Tim helped us find things to do at a much cheaper price than our tour agent was offering. German from the entertainment staff helped us with a paddle boarding lesson. He was very understanding and helpful.

Super Service! Fabulous Food!

Beach: Beautiful. Amazing snorkeling makes this place special. We saw sea turtles, barracuda, grouper, stingrays and many colourful tropical species. Rooms: Modern, clean and the bed was extremely comfortable and shower was great! Staff/Service: Friendly and so responsive to your every need. We had a couple of issues with door lock needing new batteries and air conditioning leaking water that were addressed immediately! Food: Delicious and lots to choose from at the buffet. Loved lunches poolside and breakfast outside overlooking the sea! Wine/Beer: Disappointing. White wine had aroma of gasoline! Horrible. Red not much better but tolerable. You could get better for a price. We walked into the town of Akumal and bought a couple of bottles for better prices than the hotel was offering. Only one type of beer and not our choice brand. Entertainment: They had a good rock n roll band one night out of 7. If you are looking for nightlife, this place is not for you. It's more likely suited for mature couples looking for a relaxing vacation although there were some young families. Pools: Main pool was great, but we especially liked the infinity pool near our room after a day at the beach. Lots of cabanas on the beach, but you need to claim early. We have been to many resorts along the Yucatan peninsula and this is among the best! Loved that they do not try to push some type of time share nor loyalty club upon your arrival! This is a lovely resort and we would likely return.

Amazing Akumal

Hotel has a warm & intimate feel. Never crowded. Excellent location, right on the beach. No problem finding shelter from the sun - no need to head down early to reserve a palapa. Snorkelling right off the resort, even better a short walk down the beach toward Akumal. A la carte restaurants are excellent and no need to reserve early although be prepared to wait 30-40 minutes on occasion (can grab a drink a nearby lounge). Buffet is good, not great. Definitely an older clientele (50-65). Entertainment was good - nightly live music offered in main bar. Possibly a bit tame for younger guests. Enjoyed fitness facility and yoga classes are offered for almost any level.

Quality resort!

I am very satisfied with my choice of resorts. The location of the hotel, quality of room, dining choices, and service from the management and staff were all top notch. An added free bonus were the turtles and snorkeling right near the hotel beach.

Snorkler's Delight

This is our second time to ABR, the first was about 15 years ago. Every trip to the area, we end up cabbing back here to snorkel, so we decided to stay at ABR again. Renos were great, as was the snorkelling!

Small well managed resort

Good facilities, very clean, nice beach and grounds. Great snorkeling (turtles, reefs, lots of colourful fish). Also has a spa and gym, hydro therapy pools, in room jacuzzi tubs, very good a la carte restaurants, lots of organized actvities. Close to Mayan ruins at Tulum and Coba and many other nearby excursion opportunities. Overall a fun and relaxing place for couples and families

Amazing Resort, Amazing Staff

Dec 17-27, 10 days of glorious sun, fun and family. If you are looking for a family style resort, then this is the place for you. The staff was undoubtedly the best I have ever experienced in an all inclusive. What made this resort so special is that it is not part of a big chain but family owned. Zen Resort!

The resort is very clean, newly renovated with nice hot tub on your own balcony. Wonderful yoga classes with Masters of yoga. They are very kind and sweet. The staff is very friendly, polite and efficient.

Best beach, Yoga and Staff

My husband and I had been to this resort 5 times before the renovation. The last time being 5 yrs. ago. It is now very beautiful- the main lobby is all open with a very understated elegance- simple furnishings with lovely accessories. The restaurants are all tastefully decorated. The rooms are housed in 4 buildings with a pool in front of each. The rooms are extremely large but simple furniture. Beds and pillows so comfortable. No dressers, shelves in cupboard only. Great open main bar where they had their evening entertainment. No theatre shows. The Yoga studio was close to building 4. Loved that the building was all wood, very open, the studio room was facing the ocean. The instructors were amazing. I attended a introductory hatha yoga class which was excellent. They had all the props available for use. I did not like that when we arrived and thought we were going to be brought to our room by the porter it turned out it was staff that was trying to sell us on buying into their Fidelity Club which we were not interested in. We loved all the staff that work so hard with always a smile- the maids, gardeners, bartenders(Wilbur is the best), waiters(Marcelino is the best) and the many more that I don't remember their names. Lastly, the beautiful beach, the wonderful snorkelling, the turtle sanctuary at one end of the beach and the short walk in to the village of Akumal. Worried with the huge Secrets Resort next door and the endless groups of snorkellers swimming with the turtles the area will be ruined in years to come.

Excellent resort

it's beautiful, clean, the food is great. The staff are amazing, very helpful, friendly and accommodating. It's very quiet, peaceful and really beautiful. Great for couplesI highly recommend this location.

Good Solid Relaxing Resort

Enjoyed the all room ocean view. Entire resort revolves around beach! Enjoyed no reservations & no towel cards. Bar service , room cleaning beach bar service was awesome. Resort not a party resort but geared to people who just want to relax & chill.

Definitely not 4.5 star hotel

My friend and I arrived by noon on Saturday Oct 17th. Check in time was supposed to be 3pm. We were assured that we would get into our room by 2pm. Two hours after that we finally got into the room. We paid 1100 CDN each. For that amount the hotel was OK. Small resort. No shows at night. There was music at night. That was good but not enough seats to relax. Be aware of the Fidelity Program. This is a time share but no yearly administration fee. The people that approach you when you arive call th [... read more]emselves "concierge". They appear to be friendly only to get close to you to waste two hours of your time talking about the Fidelity Program aka time share. Shameful! Luckily we went to discuss the Program when it was raining. When we said no to the 8000.00 USD for a ten year Program we were asked why did we bother to attend. It was like we were wasting their time not wasting MY vacation time. Food was good. They gave us one small bag of chips and one small chocolate bar per day. We were two people in the room. ??? Definitely not a luxery hotel. Great beach and snorkeling!

Highly recommend this resort

My husband and I recently stayed at the Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort. Our stay was fantastic. Everything about this resort is fabulous. I would recommend it any time. In fact, we've already been speaking about it to our friends and family and we are looking at visiting this resort again next year.

Amazing resort,very clean

Very nice location,relaxing and quiet. Good food and choices of restaurants. Buildings 3 and 4 are nice and quiet and looking directly onto the ocean. The Jacuzzi is a nice touch on the balcony. Staff very helpful and friendly. There are no shows in the evening, just some bands and the occasional dancers in the lobby bar, missed having the shows at night.

Fantastic

fantastic - they did not miss a thing - everyone was so helpful - I had forgotten my charger for my tablet and desk said no problem and hooked it into their computer. computer, .They had a problem with algae but they worked almost day and night to get off the beach. Food was great.
