Incredible Trip

I had 7 amazing days here last week and everything was perfect. I have a lot of friends working in the resort but nonetheless, it was perfect. My rooms were spectacular and clean everyday with fresh towels and bedding. The buffet had a wide variety of choices for it being slow season. The grounds were immaculate. What a great hotel and amazing beach!

I took my first “moms trip” and it was great! A friend and I stayed at the Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo which has only been open for a little over a year. We went in June which is considered low season and it wasn’t busy at all, it was peaceful just like we wanted. The grounds are meticulously kept, the beach is amazing and the ocean is crystal clear! The people who work there never expect a tip, a smile goes a long way. The food was good, the buffet had many options available wether it was made right in front of you how you wanted it or pre-made, it all had flavour and I was very impressed for it being Cuba. If I ever get the chance to go back I definitely would!

Paradise with approvement needed

Lets start this review ! Resort checkin: upon arrival we were dropped off to front lobby and right away can see the amazing scenery, ocean from lobby , greeted with the friendliest staff and had our room ready within minutes . Room : our room was 9205 which was the upgraded ocean view ! The room was absolutely gorgeous , beds were extremely comfortable , rooms were spacious and clean , the view was outstanding and gorgeous . If you want a afternoon nap/ shower , good luck as you won’t have clean towels or anything . We had to beg the front desk to stock our fridges with what we want , also were forced to go to snack bar a lot late at night to fill up if thirsty ... how sad .Also our room had no soap all week ! They gave us a bath bomb and assumed its soap and we’d wash our hands with this all week . Food: the food at the resort comes close to a 1 star ! The main buffet was closed , forcing majority of our guests to go and eat at grand muthu next door ... that’s kind of sad !!! We know it’s slow session , but come on .... you could at least have the a la cartes open and feed us every evening in there ... especially for a 5 star !!!! Also they had no fries at one point and were feeding us hash browns ! Food was always cold and undercooked ... Drinks were phenomenal if made by Joan at the sports bar that’s the only positive aspect that came close to 5 star ... majority of the a la cartes were closed , everyone was forced to eat from a small menu at snack bar and live off that all week.. Pool: the infinity pool was filthy and dirty and had residue floating in it majority of the time . When we spoke to staff they stated it was people’s drinks spilled .. I believe it’s dirt / sun lotion build up and other filth . Entertainment : everything closes at 11:00PM and the resort has no nightlife what so ever . The shows are at 9:30 and end at 10:00 forcing majority of people to head to bed early. The resort also has no DJ / music and nightlife or dancing either . They expected us to pay 5cuc each and every time we wanted enjoyment which was either a pool party / club few Kms away from bus . Would I return ? Absolutely yes because the staff make your experience outstanding . I can’t thank Joan , Joan Ramon , Rogervis, llamy at snack bar and everyone for making the trip excellent . The grounds are breathtaking and well kept and feel highly luxurious . Management needs to take a control on their food and negative comments as everyone was starving and upset . That’s all !

Amazing resort

very nice clean resort., the weather was excellent, entertainment was very good.the staff was very friendly and helpful,if you want to get lots of sun and to just relax this is the perfect resort to go.

Could be Better

We stayed 9 days last week of May at this resort. Beautiful grounds, good layout, nice beach (but a little windy thru our stay with no fault of the hotel) and I must say the rooms very good. We stayed in 62** with an excellent ocean view, the best bed, pillows and shower we have ever had in a hotel in Cuba (note this was our 7th visit). Food was our main disappointment and for this reason would not go back. The hotel was not at capacity (the weekends they actually had many Cuban families staying [... read more] in the resort more so than tourists) so the beach restaurant was closed. They have a 24 hr snack bar but only serve hotdogs, ham cheese sandwich and one other....everyday....all day. They as well have fries and ice cream which ended up being a nice treat once in awhile and an afternoon cappuccino was always good too . The main buffet is very small compared to other resorts we have been to and for a resort this size I could see this as a huge issue in busy season. The food was the pretty much the same everyday with very little variety. Some items that you saw at breakfast were still there at dinner. Needless to say we did not starve but pretty much ate the same items everyday for the entire stay. A few mornings too the buffet did not have the air conditioning running....although they had the front doors open....this just allowed more flies to enter the building and with no air circulation was very uncomfortable. The staff were all very nice.....always a smile on their face and happy to see you each day!! This trip has not turned us off Cuba....it really is one of our favorite Caribbean islands.....mainly because of the short travel distance, excellent beaches and the Cuban people. I would not go back to this resort our recommend to a friend as I have with past stays, but I can promise we will go back to Cayo Coco Cuba hopefully again this fall!!

Amazing resort

Every thing was 👌 the view was stunning very nice room but service wasn't great but other than that it was perfect thanks for everything I will go back next time 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Not so Good

Have been on lots of all inclusive Vacation however it was my first in Cuba. I was not expecting the food to be the best nor the rating to be the same as other tropical places. What I was expecting was a clean friendly environment for my 5 day stay. Unfortunately the resort was not clean. One women even mentioned that she had sat with her feet up in the restaurant after seeing a mouse. The service was very slow they had no beach towels for 3 days no spoons at breakfast and you had to run the hot [... read more] water for 15 mins before it heated up. I do realize that hurricane Irma went through and supplies were limited. Having said that if I had know in advance I may have reconsidered. I certainly would not recommend this particular resort after my experience and probably will not return to Cuba.

Beautiful family vaca!

Overall the resort was exactly what we were looking for in a Cuban destination. The grounds were not quite mature yet but all the same... stunning. The view from the main lobby was breathtaking. The chairs and loungers on the other hand were not very comfortable and the cushions were stained. The rooms were kept very clean. We did have quite an issue with our shower leaking out on to the bathroom floor. I would have liked more than 1 bottle of water in our room for a family of 4... We love wat [... read more]er! Staff for the most part were amazing. We did not have great service at all in the lobby. Quite a rude bunch in there at times.. Nightly entertainment kept us entertained! The biggest quelm I had was the breakfast buffet opened at 630 and closed at 10. I'm on vacation!! We don't want to wake up early to eat. We found every morning we were rushing there before it closed. We only had 2 a la carte's and both were mediocre. The beach was spectacular and the boys at the beach bar kept us entertained. Best 2 guys there! There was lots of seeweed but it was windy so... Obviously.. Next time I will pack bug repellent if traveling again in April. Got lots of bites. But come on... Who's complaining. Its Cuba!!!

FIRST TRIP TO CUBA

Here is my honest review of this resort. I have traveled many places and many countries. Beach: The beach itself was marvelous, beautiful sand well kept, my only knock is that it is about a 10 min walk from the main pools to the beach through mangroves along a boardwalk. Plenty of palapas but not enough for the entire resort. You have to get down there early to get one. Pools: Best thing about the resort was the pools, three large pools with one as a swim up bar & infinity edge to the oce [... read more]an view. Very nicely kept pools, very clean. Room: The rooms were fine, being that the hotel was only a few years old not bad. Had issues with shower leaking out onto the floor and through the wall but not life threatening. Overall fine rooms. Room maids: First day or two was great full towels and room & sheets cleaned, after that & a $10 CUC tip, could not get 3 towels, barely got one towel & 2 or 3 hand towels. Favorite line from staff was sorry , tomorrow. Front desk staff: Very attentative always polite, cashier always available for exchanging Canadian money. Sometimes they did not have small change.(I think on purpose for larger tips). Bus ride to this resort is advertised as 20 minutes but it was 45 minutes. Roads are horrible. Bar staff: Overworked, had to wait too long for drinks as they did not have enough staff. Drinks were very bland most of the time. Could not even get a good pina colada(very watery). They Only had two drinks of the day in 7 days.Ron Punch & Pina Colada. Take the hop off & hop on bus to Pillar beach it is a very nice beach but just building restaurant so not much there. Buffet: Terrible , the layout was terrible cramming everyone into the same area. Had to wait 30 min for a pizza, 20 min for pasta & about 30 min for stir fry. Saw lettuce one time in a week. Not much salad stuff at all. Beets, carrots, corn, olives. Typical buffet, same food and usually cold. Do not go for the food. Specialty restaurants: Book as soon as you arrive, they will still not have enough room. Could only book two restaurants for a week. Italian was awesome great pizza and other pasta dishes were great. International was good food but the wait was at least 45 min for main courses & the International is down by entrance boardwalk to the beach near mangroves and the bugs at dinner were really bad. Overall impression was a 3 star resort not 5 star as advertised. You could after a few days understand a few things they do for cost savings. ie: No reservations at specialty restaurants so you have to go to buffet(cheaper for them). Beach Towels at the pool were impossible to get,once you got two if you could, you could not get clean ones the entire week. You had to keep using them. Said they ran out of glasses and used plastic cups. Coffee's ,expresso & capaccino were good.(I am not a coffee person). Very surprised of this resort being that it was an MGM branded hotel. My biggest complaint was the lack of english understanding staff, they usually did not have a clue what you were saying to them. Very difficult to converse. Finally I would say this resort is a solid 3 star, we only paid $1195/pp Canadian for a week so my view is you get what you pay for , and I think we did get what we paid for. My comments above are not complaints they are information for future traveller to make decisions with. Again we enjoyed the week based on the price we paid. That said I personally would not return to this resort. hope this helps.

Lots of Great Things .....few opportunities for improvement.

Just got back from a week at the Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo. Very nice resort if you re looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation. there are a lot of great things this resort has going for it, it's only a year old and the facilities are all new and in great condition. The resort doesn't feel huge and it is a short walk to everything. The beach is beautiful and the pools are also very nice it spent little time there. The food was fine by Cuba standards however as the time went on more and more things began to run out or disappear in the buffet. I was there Wednesday before Easter to Wednesday after and by Saturday things started to become sparse ie: no chicken at the buffet. The staff are very friendly and do their best for the guests with what they have available to them. The team that does the shows at night are superb, some of the best dancers I've seen. That said there are a few things that need to be addressed mainly TOWELS! I was never able to get a beach towel for the entire week I was there, I went first morning and lined up for an hour only to get to the window and be told they were all out. Lined up for an hour the second day and someone came out after an hour to say that there would be no towels for 3-4 days due to laundry breakdown. Finally gave up just started using room towels, I spoke to customer service and asked for a few extra room towels twice and was told for sure they would put extra in the room and in the end that never happened as well and I gave up on that. I get that the laundry is centrally controlled and not done on the resort as apparently this was an issue at all the resorts on the island when chatting with people on excursions. My advice would be to bring your own beach towel - I've been to Cuba 10 times prior to this trip and this was the first time I've seen this happen, I'll always bring my own just in case from now on. Management should put clean beach towel in each room when you check in and leave the lining up for those that want to change their towels more frequently. The only other thing I would say is that there is no real nightlife which is fine if you're looking for a quiet relaxing vacation. The lobby bar closes at 11 which is strange compared to most resorts where the lobby is the hub.

Decent

The resort was beautiful and the ocean , nice rooms. The service was hit and miss. The coffee at the bar is different than what I’ve had at other resorts in Cuba. They seem to like making cappuccino and espresso black compared to a coffee with milk. Food not much variety.. towels had were in shortage so used for a whole week. Some people used their room towels. The currency is also a rip off.. 20$ you get like 14 pesos around that.

OK resort - nice vacation but would go somewhere else next time

Didn't have high expectations because of other reviews I had read. Food was okay, A-La-Cartes we're not good, and dress code was enforced. Buffet was okay, but serve the exact same thing everyday for lunch and dinner. Strangely, there was a huge beach towel shortage. luckily we had brought our own based on reviews we had read otherwise we would not have had beach towels the entire week. Staff was very friendly and helpful, beaches were amazing, pool was great as well.

Beautiful resort

the resort was very nice, the grounds and rooms are clean very well kept the one area that gave us misgivings was that the beach it is a long walk from the rooms, it is set up with lounges and cabanas for a few hundred people, they are very close together and there is only one washroom for everyone!... we stayed at the wonderful pool area. they had issues with beach towels, we didn't get beach towels until our 6th day....had to use our shower towels (which are much smaller than beach towels)

Not my first choice!!

There were 3 of us gals, 3 separate rooms.The check in process was easy and quick. The rooms were assigned already and keys were ready in a folder. Bracelets on quick... The rooms were nice except my friend said her bathroom had mould. There was a shortage of balcony chairs. My room had 2, my friends had none. If you looked at the balconies from the outside, you could see 50% did not have chairs. The chairs in the lobby were made from the cheapest foam. I could not sit on any of them. I am an [... read more] average sized woman. There were coffee makers but the coffee itself was not replenished, so bring your own. There was a beach towel shortage. We knew this before we went so we brought our own. The beach was gorgeous, but you had a sewer smell approaching the sand /beach bar but it went away after about 75 feet.There were lots of beach chairs and shelters. However, they were all taken by 7am.So I could never sleep in. The buffet was nauseating. They would BBQ lobster outside the buffet and the smell would go into the buffet area. The chairs were filthy!!! For a resort that was only one year old, it was sad to see it in such a filthy state. The food was very cold. Not even luke warm. The grilled chicken was the only thing chewable. There was a lot of seafood, but I didn't trust how it looked{lots of shells combined in the pan}. Ice cream was good. Bread choices were good. Long lineups for the grills and it was confusing. Tried the beef and pork when there was no chicken, but could never chew it. Breakfast was always busy at the omlet station. The staff was very young and inexperienced. You might see one or two that hustle.Sandra was the best waitress there! The snack bar made cappuccinos and fresh omelets in the morning.Great waitress named Yumis. She starts at 8am and is there until 3:30pm. The most difficult thing to deal with was theft in the rooms. I always lock up everything in my safe or suitcase. I never thought hanging a bathing suit up to dry would result in it being stolen. They took my bikini top. Prople might think it was taken with the towels during clean up, but I never put a towel on the floor. And my towel was always hanging on my shower door. Thankfully I had more than one or I would have been forced to go topless at the beach. My friend had 2 pkges of cigarettes taken out of a drawer. She also had a bottle of alcohol that she brought from Canada that was open, taken from the table and hidden in a closet top shelf for theft at a later time. My friend is 5ft tall and it was hidden on a shelf that was too tall for her reach. We found it by standing on a chair looking for random things when we were packing to leave. We don't think it was the maid, we think it was someone else who had access to the rooms. When we reported these things nothing was done or no apology was given.I have been to Cuba 7 times, 7 different resorts. We came here because the resort was new. This was my second worst experience th Brisa Guarda La Vaca in Holguine. I would not go back. So far, The Dhawa is at the top of the List. I was there in Feb with my hubby. Denise Ashmore.

Food was great!

Really clean and friendly staff. Will definitely stay here again. Natural environment is present inside the resort. Bed and everything in room were comfortable. Food, You will definitely miss it after your trip. Great service, very friendly, ambience too good.

So-so

This was my 8th time to Cuba (third to Cayo Coco) and first to Muthu Guillermo. We went for a week in April ‘19, and stayed in a ground floor room. The Good: location was great. Beach was decent. Pools were clean, and so was the establishment over all. The staff at the swim up bar (Oscar, Higteandro, and Dany) were awesome. The Bad: a solid 60% of the staff wouldn’t give you the time of day. Something I’ve never experienced in Cuba! The food in the buffet was mediocre at best (same [... read more] stuff every night) and the restaurants had little variety (and extremely salty meals). The snack bar was marginally better. The maid was nice, but did a 10min job every day in our room (made the bed with the same sheets every day!!). There were NEVER fresh beach towels (we would go to exchange them at 9:30am and they were already gone). Ran out of toilet paper in our room frequently. The coffee maker in the room had no filter/supplies to actually MAKE a coffee. The ants were banging on the back door every day, but luckily we brought Raid. All of the beds and chairs around the pool had been taken/held with personal belongings first thing in the morning. The ran a tractor around 2X a day with pesticides to kill the mosquitos...which would wake you up from sleep at 8am, or catch you as you were out walking the paths at dusk, with the mist of chemicals. The gardeners ran their whipper snippers at 830am EVERY DAY. Needless to stay, you’d never sleep in. Overall, I was disappointed with the staff above all. I could tolerate the rest. But in the end, it left a sour taste in my mouth, and I would never go back.

Nice resort poor service

Grounds and buildings are beautiful, the room was great with an ocean view and king size bed. The beach was nice and long and you could walk for ever. The 3 pools were nice and the service at the swim up bar was awesome. The biggest issues were the lack of service at the lobby bar and the poor design of the buffet.

Overated resort

too many childrens and very loud. the service was very poor. tables were not ready when we came for breakfast lunch and dinner. always missing some drinks. will never go back to this place . the food wasnt that great .

Modern, Clean, Beautiful

MGM Grand Muthu is a welcome addition to Cayo Guillermo. The hotel is new, very clean and modern in neutral colours. The 3 pools are beautiful with built in lounge chairs, stairs for easy entry and water spouts. Food was great, especially the Italian a la carte restaurant. Coffee & cappuccino is some of the best I have had, however be prepared to wait a minimum of 10 minutes, this includes cocktails as well. The same is for grill at buffet, they need to process more than one order at a time. Coffee in room only for first day. Rooms were exceptionally clean with fresh towels daily. Beach is beautiful, plenty of room with shade especially after 12 PM. Please note, this is a quieter resort, geared towards couples& families, not the appropriate place if you are looking to party all week. Overall a stellar resort, will return.

This is a great resort

this is a great resort , the grounds pools are wonderful. rooms and service are also great bring your own shampoo and soap as you have some on arrival and thats it. the beach is amazing but if you want a palapa be prepared to get up early and put your towels on even if the resort says you can not reserve everyone does. the food could be better but it was ok . the main buffet at night was to small for the amount of guest there had to wait sometimes 20 minutes at the different stations. oth [... read more]er then that the resort was good
