Akumal Bay Beach and Spa Resort: 3rd time the Charm!!
My wife and I as well as my sister and niece were at the ABBWR from Feb 22 to Feb 28 2025. Except for the Sunwing delay for 24 hours (another story) the ABBWR met all our needs. It was my wife's and my 3rd visit!!
Great staff, great beach and snorkeling right off the beach!!. Very good dining and a ton of choices and eating venues. My sister and niece are both gluten free and they were treated like royalty by Adrianna and Hector as well as all the other a la carte venues.
Yes - the buil[... read more]ding 1 we were in is in real need of an update (I understand building 3 and 4 have already been updated). The rooms are very basic and in need of an overhaul. Did not impact our stay but for those looking for 4-5 stars make sure you are in building 3 or 4 for now until building 1 is redone. FYI building 1 is in front of the best part of the beach!!
See you next time

Costa Sur Resort and Spa: Costa Sur Resort & Spa – 4.75/5
We stayed at Costa Sur Resort & Spa for 10 nights at the end of February 2025 and had a fantastic experience. The resort is located about 20-30 minutes south of the airport, depending on traffic.
Check-In & Room:
Check-in was smooth and quick, and we were pleased with our well-appointed 10th-floor room. The king-size bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows, and there was ample storage between the dresser, nightstands, and two closets (which included hangers, an iron and ironing board, and[... read more] a safe). The living space had a sofa, coffee table, and a kitchen table with chairs.
The kitchen was well-equipped with a mid-sized fridge that kept our drinks ice cold, a two-burner gas stove, pots, pans, and dishes for four. The bathroom had a large shower enclosure, a hairdryer, ample towels, and provided toiletries.
Our balcony, while small and unfurnished, offered incredible views, making it a perfect spot for whale watching and even spotting massive stingrays. We brought our chairs outside in the evenings to enjoy the sunsets. The sound of the waves was a soothing white noise at night, though depending on the tide, it could get quite loud—but closing the sliding door helped.
Resort & Amenities:
The property had two pools, with the larger one always very warm. The activities staff, Jose and Henry, did a great job engaging guests in water aerobics, bingo, ping pong, darts, water volleyball, and even bartender lessons. Poolside food and drink service was available, which was a nice touch.
Dining & Service:
Our booking included free breakfast, which consisted of juice, coffee, a fruit plate, two eggs (any style), a choice of meat, refried beans, and Mexican breakfast potatoes. Chilaquiles or hotcakes were also options. The food was good, but the service was hit or miss—not due to the friendliness of the staff (who were great) but likely because their ordering system could use an update for better organization.
Overall Experience:
It was nice to stay at a resort that wasn’t part of a giant chain—it had a more personal and relaxed feel. The guest mix was mostly people in their 50s and 60s, including many retirees from Canada and colder parts of the U.S. We really enjoyed our stay and will be booking again for 2026 for sure. Highly recommend!

Riu Palace Baja California: Amazing Resort
Clean, very modern, easy to navigate to find places, great party events (at the next building), excellent food/service.
Ample of beach chairs all around. Could not swim in the ocean, so the beach was not utilized. Beautiful view of the Arch of Cabo San Lucas. So close to go into the town for evening entertainment using UBER.
Entertainment was okay at this location. Have to go into the town for real entertainment. Bar services was okay depending on the server.

Barcelo Maya Tropical: Great family holiday
Overall the hotel was amazing.
Check in and out was smooth without any issues. We had requested 3 rooms together on the ground floor because we were travelling with a small child and an elderly mother and were pleased when it was honored.
The staff were all friendly, the drinks were great, the grounds are beautiful and well maintained.
The a la carte restaurants were the best ... but they usually are. The buffets were good with lots of variety but were very busy but it was the season [... read more]we chose to travel.
The pools were wonderful and my 3 year old grand daughter especially loved the kids water park area. The beach was clean and super sandy. The only complaint was the chair game ... it's alive and well at the resort. I think some people save chairs at the beach and pool so they can go between both. The first day we could only find 2 broken chairs for a family of 7 but my husband started setting his alarm for 430am and put 4 towels on chairs together and he was surprised at how many others were doing the same thing so early.
The room was spacious, clean and well stocked. I had read reviews about the humidity in the rooms and it is absolutely true. There is definitely something wrong with the air conditioning/ventilation system because everything was always damp...the bed, pillows, sheets, towels and our clothes. We didn't see mold in our room but it definitely smelt moldy. When we arrived home we had to wash everything because they were still damp and smelled musty.

Tropicana Hotel: Great Location and Great Value
The Tropicana Hotel in Puerto Vallarta is great value for your money. The hotel is very clean and the service was very good. They are continuously making improvements for example, this year a new beach grill. Last year, they installed wifi in all of the rooms. The breakfast plan options are limited, simple but adequate. It is worth the convenience and cost not to have to go out for breakfast. The security, gardners, reception staff, bellhops, pool cleaners, towel lady, cleaners and waiters[... read more] all work extremely hard to provide an exceptional experience. One suggestion would be to upgrade the lounges at the pool and to provide additional plugs in the rooms. At times, the wait staff were short staffed on the beach, but they did their best to keep up with the demands. The location is perfect for exploring the Romantic Zone and there are restaurants and stores just steps away. It is easy to walk many places from the Tropicana Hotel.

Viva Azteca by Wyndham: Lovely smaller resort
We chose this resort specifically because it was a smaller size than the mega resorts you often find along the Mayan Riviera. Food was consistently good and while we loved the lobby bar, the pool bar was hit and miss with the quality of drinks. While we missed having a swim-up bar in the pool I wouldn't trade it for the size of the beach and always having available loungers no matter what time of day it was. The lobby courtyard was beautiful and a lovely space to enjoy pre & post dinner drinks. Catalonia Riviera Maya: Nice resort
The resort had awesome bars and restaurants, although I found the restaurants hard to book. The buffet rooms had a great assortment of good food. The layout of the resort made it extremely easy to navigate. Our room was good, but if the bath tub on the deck was made into a hot tub, that would put it over the top. I have been to better beaches, but while snorkelling I did see a lot of marine life in the water. Overall, it was a great experience and I would return for another week some day.

Generations Riviera Maya: Very disappointed!
Our room wasn't ready, which we expected. Once it was ready, at 3pm, we waited for over an hour for our bags. Once we called to say they weren't there, they were sent quickly.
The rooms are spacious beds comfortable, good bathroom, however dark. We opted for a swimout, which looked nice but it was too cold. All of the pools were too cold to enjoy. There was water aerobics/water zumba posted every other day, however it never took place. I'd wait at the pool, no announcement, no excitement at all[... read more]. Very disappointing! There is no music playing, nothing happens. This was the most boring resort we've ever visited, hands down! If you don't have children with you, you can visit the El Dorado, where they have a band at 8-9:30, then entertainment at 10. This was enjoyable. They also have a few bars with people! The bar at Generations usually had 0 to 4 people in it. There is no " lobby bar".
The beach was another huge disappointment. There are cement barriers dropped all along the 3 resorts, it's rocky and not very swimmable. The beach itself it kept clean.
The food, well I have to say much better than most resorts. Generations, again very limited, but the a la carte restaurants were pretty good.
Some great servers, Alberto (takes care of the privileged area on the beach), very nice guy. He brought us drinks a few times. This was the only time we were ever offered a drink on the beach ir at the pool. Zero service other than Alberto. Jeremias in the buffet was very personable and attentive. Good often cold.
Our stay was with Air Canada vacations. The pick ip and drop off was excellent, we had great service. Our complaint is geared towards the resort. Our flight was a late one and therefore pu was at 7pm. There was no hospitality room although the place appeared to be nowhere close to capacity. They charged us ,$20.00 US pr hour to keep our room until 5, then said we had to check out. They said if we ate at the resort, we'd have to pay for another night! Wow, really poor service we don't make the times for flights or pick up, so rude service.
This was so disappointing, definitely not close to a 5 star as advertised.

Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda: GOOD VALUE WITH SOME SUBTLE IMPERFECTIONS
Just spent a week at the Blue Bay. Lots of good at this resort. Staff were all great. Grounds were well manicured and full of wildlife (even a deer!). Rooms were clean (ours needed to be remopped upon arrival as they clearly had been mopped with sticky water -- not a big deal). Air conditioning was fully functional, lots of hot water. Fridge was stocked with pop and beer and fresh bottled water daily.
There are two centres of activity and accommodation here. Buildings 6,7, and 8 which are [... read more]close to the main lobby and a quiet pool area; and the buildings close to the beach. It wasn't worth the extra to pay to be close to the beach; it was a short walk regardless and the quiet pool had a bar, restaurant, washroom and activity. The beach-area pool had lots of activity. If there was one issue it was the ocean; the sea bed didn't feel like sand, more like a paste (perhaps from settled algea or other sea weeds. plus there were rocks hidden in the bed -- bring water shoes). The waters by the beach had old doc structures and big sand bags to save sand so it wasn't exactly picturesque. Overall a decent resort -- quiet and a 50+ vide (although the beginning of reading week saw an influx of youth). Food was decent (although they couldn't cook a hot dog. I stepped behind the grill to cook my own hot dogs and burgers). Buffets had a good variety. Lots of great drinks mixed up, and an excellent coffee shop. Only 40 minutes to the airport which was great!
We recently came back from staying one week at the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo resort in Mexico. It was a great place! The food was good, the grounds and rooms were very well maintained, and the service was impeccable. The app was a great way to get information about activities as well as communicate with guest services. We would highly recommend this resort and can't wait to return!

Paradisus Cancun: Another wonderful Visit to the Paradisus
Stayed in the Reserve again and was treated royally. Still worth the extra expense, especially since the hotel was at 100%. The staff could not have been more helpful. There are fewer of them, and that makes their job more challenging. Special thanks to our concierge, Enrique, who worked hard to make us feel special. There was a shortage of beach chairs due to the storm in January that washed away everything on that part of the beach and so extra thanks to the beach hut employees, David and Vic[... read more]tor who did their best to find us chairs. I do hope more are on order! The hotel is closing end of May for extensive renovations, and we did notice that some minor things in our room are not maintained. I will be interested in seeing the new version. Hopefully it will not lose "the magic" that makes the hotel unique.
The buffet food is only adequate, - not the same variety as we used to see and trouble keeping the food warm, Corners being cut as food costs everywhere are increasing. I'm sure that is true at all resorts, and not just in Mexico. All of our meals at the specialty restaurants were great. The chefs there are top notch.
Special gratitude to our agent Karol who always takes excellent care of us when we make our reservations. He finds us the best travel available.

Catalonia Riviera Maya: Great Resort
First the good. The grounds were well groomed, the food in Bloved and a la carte dinners were delicious. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The bedrooms were clean and updated (was told our building was newly renovated). We enjoyed the amenities and had a fantastic time. We found the size of the resort was perfect to get around in.
I also want to make mention that Keila in Bloved was amazing as our main server. The resort is lucky to have her!
Now the bad. While we apprecia[... read more]ted the location of out rooms, it was very central in the resort as we were in the Privileged rooms, our nights sleeps were not restful at all. Building 3's stairwell was directly across from the building that housed the laundry, supply room and dish cleaning area. The noise at night that came from there was very loud, and reverberating up the stairwell and into our rooms. The doors to the rooms are very thin and need to be sound proofed. Also the path from that building out to the rest of the resort ran right past our patio door. All the transporting of laundry, booze bottles etc to the rest of the resort were moved down that path in carts that had plastic wheels. These deliveries were made at all hours of the night and would constantly wake us up as they went past.
As mentioned above, if the doors where soundproofed it would help to buffer the noise of the other guests coming and going. For most of our stay we had 2 rooms that were together and had young people in them. They did not respect any other guests, and banged their doors and talked loudly when they left at 11pm and returned in the wee hours of the night.
The other recommendation I would make is to have more shading around the pool areas. There is not enough!
Overall I would return to this resort, I would just never stay in building 3 or in a room along that path.

Bahia Principe Escape Sian Ka'an: Awesome Resort
I loved the hotel and the resort. We loved the fact that you could stay at one and play at the other three. We were with another couple on this holiday.
The staff at our resort were very helpful and easy to deal with. If you needed assistance they helped you right away and tried their best.
The rooms were nice and big not what I expected (I thought they were going to be smaller) but they were perfect. As we had a bad rain day we were able to sit at the table in our room bring in the chai[... read more]rs from our friends room and play dice, cards with the couple that came with us. The fridge was stocked and if we wanted room service it was just a call away.
The rooms were kept very clean.
I loved getting on the tram to take us to the different resorts as it was entertaining and got to meet new people.
There was a variety of food and drinks. Lobby bar the staff were friendly and it was nice to sit in the open with the breeze coming through and watching the nightly shows.
The chocolate donuts were just off the charts.
I would totally recommend this hotel. Like I said stay at one and play at three was just perfect.

Blue Diamond Luxury Boutique Hotel: Enjoyable Nature-Focused Resort, Maintenance and Staffing Issues
Overall my partner and I enjoyed our week-long stay at Blue Diamond, however there were some issues with our stay that I feel are worth noting. For context, we spent 4 days relaxing at the resort and 2 days on full-day excursions that we booked through Viator.
Pros
- The resort is situated in lush jungle and mangroves, with beautiful gardens and a cenote on site. You can walk around and view the cenote whenever you like, but you have to book swimming in the cenote with the concierge at leas[... read more]t 24 hours in advance. Our swim in the cenote was cancelled due to rainy weather (nothing we're not used to in Vancouver!) but after seeing it, we didn't feel like we were missing out. We saw a lot of wildlife during our stay, including iguanas and other lizards, coatis, agoutis, raccoons, turtles, crocodiles, and many kinds of birds. We were warned that we may see snakes, but we did not come across any during our stay. There is an adorable and friendly cat that hangs around the lobby.
- My partner and I found our Patio Junior Suite to be spacious, with a large bathroom, walk-in closet, and indoor and outdoor seating area.
- The resort is small in comparison to others we've been to, which felt more intimate and made it easier to get to know the staff and other guests.
- We really enjoyed the food, although I will note that we aren't picky and don't have any dietary restrictions.
- The staff were very friendly and accommodating - any issues we encountered with service were not their fault but rather due to understaffing.
- The beach was lovely and rarely busy. There was some seaweed in the water and on the beach, but not so much that it ruined the experience. We really enjoyed swimming at the beach and hardly went in the pools at all, although they were nice. It would have been nice to have a shower/rinsing area down by the beach.
Cons
- Almost all of the common area buildings/structures could benefit from some minor maintenance, while a few areas need major maintenance. For example, we often encountered plumbing issues with the washrooms near the pool area and many of the tables we were seated at at the restaurants were wobbly. The ramp from the pool area down to the beach was broken and taped off. In general, there is visible wear and tear on most of the furniture and amenities at the resort.
- Regarding our room, there was also visible wear and tear on the furniture and amenities, nothing extreme but it did detract from the experience. Our bathroom had two showers, however the one with the spray handle didn't have sufficient pressure to use and the blinds on the shower windows, which were necessary as you could see into our bathroom from the public path outside our room, were rusting and difficult to use. On the second night of our stay, we received a call from reception that they were experiencing resort-wide issues with the air conditioning system. The staff apologized for the inconvenience, but couldn't give us any information about when they expected the issue to be resolved. We ended up not having any air conditioning in our room for about two days, after which it gradually increased and returned back to normal by the end of our stay. We also experienced issues with our room keycards not working 3 times throughout our stay and had to go to reception to replace them.
- A new resort is being built next to this one, resulting in loud construction that can be heard from the pool and restaurant area. Luckily we could not hear anything from our room.
- The resort, especially the restaurants and bars, seemed understaffed. While all of the staff were lovely and doing their best, we often had to wait a while (30-45+ mins) to place our order and receive our food. Many times we never received the drinks we ordered and either gave up, or had to order them again.
Overall we enjoyed our stay, but I don't think we would return unless the maintenance and staffing issues are adequately addressed. I can imagine that this resort was excellent when it first opened, but it seems that the management is no longer prioritizing guest's overall experiences which is a shame, because the resort itself is beautiful.

Occidental Tucancun: Mediocre Resort
I recently stayed at Occidental Tucancun, while it wasn't a terrible experience, there were several areas that could use improvement.
The hotel feels quite outdated. The rooms, though clean, could really use a refresh. The furnishings were old, and the overall vibe felt stuck in the past. The bathroom, while functional, had some wear and tear that stood out.

Grand Park Royal Cozumel: Likely not to return
While the view from our room was beautiful, we wouldn’t return to this resort. Beach is small (although good snorkeling), pools were good. Food was absolutely terrible. Not for those with accessibility issues.
