The grounds were well cared for; the rooms not so much! I don't believe the rooms have been retro-fitted since the resort was built? 20yrs? The food was okay but just more of the same breakfast, lunch and dinner.Service was good, but unfortunately my wife was ill for most of our vacation. I needed ice for the water , which was all my wife consumed for the week. I had to walk from the hotel room to the lobby bar 3 times a day just so the ice bucket could be refilled; as there was no place to get [... read more]ice unless you went to the bar. The beach was beautiful and clean. Our on call doctor Cecilia was wonderful, we could learn from Cuban medicine.
This was our fourth time to Cuba, but unfortunately not our best vacation.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: This is our home!
We’ve been here, my husband and I,4 Times now. My parents somewhere in the 20’s. This is the place to go in cuba to feel like you are part of the family. The grounds are always well kept (just remember you’re in cuba and not a 5 star hotel in Toronto-supplies are different, but I can tell you the people put in way more effort then they are praised for.)
The drinks and food is are always perfect- exactly what we are looking for.
Rooms: some a little outdated in style compared to what we [... read more]are used to back home, but they are charming and always clean and maintained. The outdoor showers in the single stores villas are to die for- not once did I use the indoor shower.
Beach- zero complaints, it’s the ocean and the sun and the vibe of being in paradise.
Huge and loving shout out to our Cuban family members who have always gone above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and loved.
Jorge, Judith, Roberto, Yulenis, Alien, Misladys, Lisbeth, Yemmy, Chang, Nessie and her husband Dickson, Ozmany, Juan Carlos, Pablo, Tamara- I’m forgetting people I know! I’m sorry but we love you!
We will be returning next year and again and again.
We’ve been to Varadero, Santa Clara and this place is always our golden standard.
Thank you time and time again for being lovely hosts to our Family and making us feel like Paradisus is our second home.

Melia Las Dunas: Big resort
Hotel is in the average of confort with poor social activities, not to mention the Food is very bad with not too much choice nor diversity of cuisine
We have to eat the same menu for the whole week !
Fruits are of poor choice, not even orange not even banana
Just returned from a wonderful week at the Paradisus Rio De Oro. It is a beautiful resort. The beaches are great with the snorkeling being the highlight of our trip. Spacious rooms, gorgeous grounds, super friendly and helpful staff and good food. I can't wait to go again. I spent a day at their spa and the snorkeling off the beach there was amazing. It truly was like spending a week in paradise.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Could have been better
Food is generally (breakfast, luch & dinner) decent/tolerable compared to other Cuban resort. Love the beach... not a lot of seaweeds or sea grass (haven't seen jelly fish... which is good); it's very calm and is pretty shallow from a good stretch; there's a good amount of water activities... but haven't noticed beach activities (like zumba by the beach). Unfortunately, there's no free recreation in the resort... i.e., indoor table tennis, billiard, etc.; although we went during MOSQUITO SEASON [... read more](we didn't know it was that bad), which is ur pretty much want to stay inside the room inorder not to get bitten to death by mosquitos. Service and room is good. I dont' know why there is a phone without a dial tone and directory. If you need a service... you have to go to service desk (everywhere there is a mosquito, including inside the room it's just less). And for some reason the insect repellant spray, bracelet doesn't work). I heard from other tourist mosquitos there don't care; you can even get bitten from on top of your clothing. I didn't see they defog for mosquitos; although previous resort did twice a day and there's barely any mosquito/s.

Tryp Cayo Coco: GREAT Resort!!
We had a great time at this resort - not our first time to Cuba but our first to the Cayo Coco area. It's a great area to just relax for the week as there's not much off-resort other than the usual excursions and the market a 10 minute walk away, although Steve and the rest of the entertainment team really keeps it lively on resort anyways!
Check-In: We arrived later in the evening (9pm) and were checked in immediately...it was fast and very friendly service, and they even told us exactly wh[... read more]ere to go for food right away. We exchanged our $ at check-in and got a better rate than at the airport.
Rooms: We were in Block 5 with an ocean view, 2nd floor room. The room itself was dated (as we expected) but everything worked fine except for one electrical outlet (but who cares?) The AC was ice-cold, which we appreciated as the week we were there was exceptionally hot - it got up to 43 degrees one day with the humidity - so it was a nice escape after spending the entire day by the pool or at the beach. We were never without hot water, the pressure was great, and the room was everything we needed it to be.
Food: We never went hungry, that's for sure! For it being low season, we were actually expecting far less than we received...the buffet was exceptional. After being at numerous resorts in Cuba and the DR, this resort had one of the best buffets and a great selection comparably. We always sat in Fidel's area, he was amazing! The snack bar downstairs was good, nothing special but they did do some great little ham & cheese sandwiches. The only a la carte we went to was the Cuban, and it was simply amazing...better than some restaurants I've been to here in Canada, actually. Definitely take advantage of it!
Pool & Beach: We spent the entire first day at the beach, the water was crystal clear with no seaweed to be seen. The bali beds are a great touch! One suggestion - bring a large beach blanket and some dollar-store clips to lay over the top for full shade, otherwise you'll get some of the sun as the shades don't cover the entire tops. Lots of beach loungers available always, and the beach was massive compared to the pictures I've seen. Towards the end of the week it was red-flagged due to the high winds, and the heavy waves did leave some seaweed and a 3-4 foot drop on the beach, but it was still beautiful! The pool always had tons of room, and it was cleaned daily. Watch for crabs though - they liked to fall in overnight and we were usually picking them out first thing in the morning, larger crabs and little hermit crabs in their tiny shells. There was always events going on at the pool, Steve and the rest of the team kept it entertaining and fun every single day!
A couple of tips: At the lobby bar, make sure you get a Spanish Coffee or two in the evening as a nightcap - they are delicious (and potent!) Also get them to make you an Aqua Hurricane (thanks Yaniel & Maylan!)...tasty little things! And make sure you go to the evening entertainment, the crew is very talented here!
Above all, I would recommend the Tryp to anyone I know...the people who work here are the friendliest and the best I have ever had the pleasure of meeting at any resort I have been to. They really do make you feel so welcome, and we will definitely be back!

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Great Vacation
This is my second visit to the resort. I had first visited January 2019.
I had stayed on the Royal Service Side both times and recommend the Royal Service Side.
Service - 4/5 - Staff overall are awesome. I did not give a 5 as some staff seemed to give more attention to Spanish speaking visitors versus the rest of the crowd. In addition, when I ask for Havana Club rum I kept being served Elixxir while the Spanish speaking/Cubans visiting received Havana Club. This typically happened at the [... read more]pool bar on the Royal Service Side.
Food - 4/5 - Food selections were optimal for Cuba. Chicken, pork, beef, fish all available. Salads, veggies, and local fruit available. I did not give a 5 as the beef was usually tough and dry and the a la cartes were often bland.
Room - 4/5 - The room was spacious. The room on the hilltop air conditioning was not working properly. I was moved to a renovated room by the lobby/pool/beach. It is much smaller as it was only a junior suite but closer to all amenities. The air conditioning did not work properly in this room either. Perhaps the units were being overworked as it was hot and humid. The room was not hot it just wasn't cool enough. Also, ground floor renovated rooms are prone to ants entering. Not a big deal but had to put towels down by the doors.
Beach - The beach was kept clean and very calm. The water was not clear because of the storms at night. The sand was clean. Plenty of spots to sit and get shade.
Overall, I enjoyed my vacation and will be returning on October 2019.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Fantastic staff
The staff at this resort are amazing. Friendly accommodating I cannot say enough about them. Our breakfast/lunch waitress Yirenia was an absolute sweetheart. The beach is beautiful and kept clean. The resort is pretty clean. We were in room 7121. Decent size. But needed work. Issues flushing the toilets. Back of the door not clean. Stocking of the mini bar is hit and miss. We asked for a room with 2 double beds. We got 2 twin beds pushed together. Not cool. On that note theA/C was hit and miss.[... read more] Sometimes we had to go outside where it was cooler. Hot tub didn’t work. It’s hard to escape the heat. Lobby bar outside no ceiling fans to create a breeze. On the other side of the resort that lobby bar was in door. No a/c no fans. The food was mediocre at best. Lunch buffet on the upgraded side ok. The other side had a great lunch. By the beach. But breakfast and dinner not bueno

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Very nice resort!
The grounds were spotless. Amenities is good places. However the one note that I can say, new owners are cheap. Food was not close to what it should be. No mint for mojitos. No chocolate sauce for banana drinks. Rumors of them swapping cheap vodka and representing russian vodka. The pool bar staff were top notch and catered to us as best they can with what they had. I may not go back but I still recommend it as a decent resort although perhaps overpriced if they continue to be cheap with food an[... read more]d drink supplies.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Very good resort
It was a very nice hotel, the workers are all very friendly, the rooms are clean, there was many varieties of food, the drinks were very good. The beach was very clean. Many of them don’t speak English, which is fine but if you don’t know at least a couple of words in Spanish it won’t be very easy.

Melia Marina Varadero: Not recommended for kids
We were there from August 30- September 5, 2019 and there were cockroaches in our room. We were with an infant and a 7 years old. When I mentioned at the reception that there were cockroaches in our room, they took no action or gave us a room on higher floors (we were on the 4th floor).
The food was bad and salty, but it was expected as this wasn't our first time in Cuba.
Our flight was delayed and they gave us half hour courtesy room, but it was full of cigarette smoke. I wouldn't recommen[... read more]d taking kids to this hotel. I have been to other resorts in varadero and they were more cleaner than Melia Marina.

Melia Cayo Santa Maria: You pay for what you get.
The beach and the pool were amazing! However those were the only good things at this hotel. The service was not what I was expecting for a 4/5 star hotel. You would have to call the waiter over like 3 times before they actually came over. The rooms were like a motel room, not a hotel standard room. The shower had cracks in it. I think the most disappointing aspect of it all, was the food. I’m vegetarian and there was practically no options for me except pasta and fries. It’s kind of difficul[... read more]t to live off of that for 5/6 days straight. The food was incredibly bland. The only thing that made this hotel sort of worth it, was the amazing beach and the fact that the staff are generally pretty nice, despite the incredibly slow 2 star service. Also, things like milkshakes aren’t available. Ice cream is only available at dinner and lunch, not whenever you would like, which is surprising considering it’s all inclusive.
