Very nice

Beautiful beach, clean room,decent food. Would definitely go back again. The only thing missing is entertainment, there really isn't any. Close to bank and markets. Grounds well kept and most of the staff are very helpful.

Bad experience

dinning was the worst ever, some of that crap I would not feed to my dog. the building that we stayed in reminded me of some of the bombed out buildings that as children we played in. and those are not fond memories. the girls looking after the place do a great job with the resourses that they have.

Recent vacation

Probably wouldn't go back the beach was amazing but as for the resort not clean, things falling apart and did not feel like the staff were happy. Our first room had dirty walls and the windows were painted shut. WiFi only worked maybe 10% of the time.

Transferred to Mercure D'Oro

Firstly, Club Kawama was overbooked, but Nicolle was great in letting us know in advance that Playa D'Oro would accomodate us. What a relief to have been met by the representative upon our arrival at the airport and handed our transfer package. We read a lot of reviews before leaving since we knew exactly where we were going....most of them were negative. However, we were aware that it is Cuba, and not fair to compare it to hotels in the USA or Canada. The people on the beach selling their wares - yes, annoying a tad bit, but one has to understand that for them, that is their daily earnings. And for some people who never left the resort, it's their ONLY contact with locals. The tour guides? I find them to be hagglers - we already pay a lot for the tour, why make us feel like we need to tip? We do it anyway in a restaurant, bar - but when we are paying $200-00 for a day outing & we know that the locals earn peanuts a day, where does all the money go? And yeah - we saw the tour day on one of our excursions being handed "something" but the owner of each bar/restaurant/stop we made. Overall, D' Oro was a good place to stay at, the mattress were waaaay better than the resort we stayed at 2 years ago that is just 2 bus stops away. But that resort also had great food,. staff and entertainment - its' really all just a matter of the mind. If you are picky, you won't enjoy the place - if you are well travelled and can enjoy the variances and quality every country has to offer, and if you understand the politics and social economics of Cuba, you will understand why it is what it is. Unique, beautiful, courages people.

Just Plain relaxed fun

Loved our last stay at Kawama. Booked a superior room and got what I think was one of the best in the house. We had a terrace with a roof and spent our only rainy day happily enjoying friends and laughs. Our housekeeper was great and had a sense of humor. Found our hats incorporated in her towel sculptures and swans hiding in the bathroom. The food in the ala cart restaurant was good. Loved the old feel of the place and the mature gardens. HOME AWAY FROM HOME

This was our 4th time to Club Kawama, we were very pleased with some improvements from last year. The food was better, the Italian A la Carte was open this year and the food was amazing. We enjoyed the privilege of attending the Repeaters Supper, it was great to meet up with old friends and meet new ones. Good choice if you have upgraded room.

Better than average food, facilities and service. Great area and beach. The small room we had, was below average with no sliding door or balcony and in need of serious redecorating - stained bedding/curtains, peeling paint and some plumbing issues (drains). Quite a few got sick with colds/flu but medical service here is good and resort can't be faulted. TIP: Buy the room upgrade before you leave - probably not available after - roughest room I've had in 20 trips to Cuba.

The resort was good

The resort was good. Do not book a standard room it was a sh.... hole . We then upgraded to a Superior room much better . Food well it was typical Cuban buffet food so so the ala carta were good .Other wise we had a great time .

Friendly resort

Kawama is a wonderful place to stay if you want a comfortable, enjoyable, and sunny Cuban experience. Although kawama leaves something to be desired at times it is great value for your money. Our family has enjoyed years of memories and have built a great relationship with the staff which is easy considering the friendly environment they provide. Never had a bad experience with our rooms but they are hit or miss. Overall a good time.

We have been to this hotel over 40 times so we must enjoy it

there are improvements every visit,lighting to all walkways, improved coffee bars, top shelf drinks available,wifi- internet on select areas, better entertainment at night, menu improved, more staff on site etc

Club Kawana

We just got back from Cuba having stayed at the Club Kawana for 1 week. We went with help fro Rick Lockhart from TripAdvisor which I recommend. We went with no expectations and were pleasantly surprised with our room. We did not ask for an upgrade and the room was clean with a good bed and no balcony. The food was acceptable and the bartenders and staff were friendly. The beach is the best I have seen and great to walk on. The town is close by either foot or bus. Good

The resort was allright. We had the superior room so we had a balcony. The kids had a lot of bumps on there skin and we thought it was mosquitos, but someone in the line at the airport said it could have been bed bugs. So perhaps the beds in the kids room had bed bugs?

Wonderful resort!

The beach, the pool.. are all great! Only the room is a little bit old and dirty...and the entire hotel has no free WIFI. The buffet is all right but less of seafood, and Chinese food, it should be more diversified.

Nice Resort

The hotel/resort is one of the older ones at over 80 years old. However, it has most of the modern amenities. The pools are nice with shallow and really shallow sections for kids and toddlers (there is also a small playground for kids). The pool bar is open 24 hours. The lobby bar is open until 11:00 PM daily and helps when you are waiting in the lobby or hanging out there. There is a nice small gym. The room was basic with decent beds, old CRT televisions (no remote though), air conditioning, a [... read more] small fridge and safe. This is the basic room to my knowledge. The upscale rooms are bigger and have things such as bidets. There are better rooms and "houses" available as well on the property. The grounds are well-kept. There are gardeners working on the grounds everyday. There are security personnel on the grounds 24 hours keeping an eye on everything. There are three restaurants, a buffet restaurant, an Italian restaurant and an 'International' restaurant. The latter two require reservations. The latter two also had better food. Then again, one does not go to Cuba for the food. There are a few "convenience" stores on the premises where you can buy essentials you may have forgotten to pack as well as souvenirs and Cuban cigars. The beach is nice and clean. You just have to get-up early to get some chairs. Most people tend to put their towels or other personal effects to 'reserve' the chairs. If you're not on the beach to get a chair by 8:00 AM, you may not get one all day. The water is clear blue and warm. The temperature was between 27 C to 30 C the entire time we were there. Though it never really felt that hot as there was always a nice breeze. the resort also has a bar on the beach and depending where you are on the beach, the pool bar is not that far off as well. Most beaches have locals always trying to sell you something. This beach was no different. What was different was, they came and talk to you once and then left you alone which was nice. Remember to pack some insect/mosquito repellent. You are in a part of the world where you may run into them. I did not get too many bites. Just one day of a few mosquito bites. I had a roll-on medication to soothe them. There is a bank a 5 minute walk outside the resort where you can exchange currency. You can also buy Cuban pesos at the bank using Canadian credit cards (sorry no debit cards). Money can also be exchanged at the front desk but the bank has a better rate. I did not find any bank machines (ATM) on the resort or near it. The staff, from the wait staff, to gardeners, housekeepers, to the night watchmen etc.at the resort were very nice, always cheerful and helpful. Many would have a conversation with you, if you were so inclined. There were some minor issues with my room and the staff took care of it immediately. For me, I found the staff made this vacation for me. I would definitely go back just because of the staff.

Great value!

The Pool was very clean and large enough to accommodate the guests with comfortable chairs. The beach is very beautiful but the chairs were not comfortable and there weren't enough of them. The standard rooms are not large enough but the superior rooms were much better. The staff were helpful and wanted to please the guests. Most of them were quite friendly. The outside eating areas and lobby were too smokey- should not allow smoking in eating or enclosed areas. The public bathrooms often had no [... read more] toilet paper but were usually kept clean.As far as food was concerned, there was always something good to choose at the buffet. The soups & omelets were really good and the food at the a la carte Italian was really good. Beds & pillows were not the best but bringing an extra pillow and mattress cover would help. The location was really good because it was a short bus ride or cab ride to shopping and restaurants.

Food and Service has gone down hill

My sister and I have stayed at this resort around 5 times. We just came back from there and I am not a picky person but the service and food have gone down a lot at this resort. Don't know if I would go back again.

Repeater

I just arrived home on Saturday October 15 th...this was my 10 th time to Club Kawama in the last 3 years. I have gone in different months and each time I find the same friendly staff I call my family. The effort that is made by the management, security, front desk, bartenders , maids and wait staff to make my stay memorable is just that...we are all on first name basis.

Amazing trip!! :)

The resort that we stayed at (kawama) was over all really good. The food was good. The rooms were good. The 24 hr snack bar was good. The only not so good thing was no Strawberry daiquiris . Haha. But the pins coladas were very yummy. We give them 4 stars! We also recommend this resort . If your on a budget but want a great time this is the resort for you.. :) they really do treat the customers amazing.

Beautiful Resort

Pool, grounds, dining room, beach and ocean wonderful. Rooms left a lot to be desired. Our first room was what I would consider a two star, 3 double beds, with skinny 6 inch mattresses, and a vertical blind strip was missing, (about 4 inches wide), and when I went to adjust it, as it compromised our privacy, and a second strip fell to the floor, opening a wide gap. I reached up to stabilize the long covering box that ran the length of the blinds above it, and the box fell on my head, The sink wa [... read more]s between the wash room and beds, and I turned on the light switch, and the light didn't come on. I took the bulb and put it in another socket, and it came on, so it was the switch. I went in the wash room, and there was no fan, so I went to open the windows, but it was sealed shut (no ventilation). They gave us an upgrade room the next day, but we're reluctant to fix any breakdowns we encountered. I felt like I was looked at as the problem!,,, .

So so resort

The beach is amazing as for the resort mediocre at best. Staff also not very friendly with the exception of Grisly in the front reception. Very helpful. The food is one star at best and the night shows terrible.
