Bad......

So, this has been my 6th ( and very likely) LAST trip to the Tryp Cayo Coco. I understand that 'it's Cuba' so, my expectations of a vacation here are lower than they would be in other Caribbean destinations. The beach is beautiful but almost every other aspect of this resort leaves a LOT to be desired. The food quality has gone dramatically down-hill, the availability of food and drink items has decreased and the service has become almost non existent. There is very little entertainment - an [... read more]d what little entertainment there was, was terrible. The resort is dirty beyond the simple mould caused by being in a damp climate. It seems like they have stopped spraying for mosquitoes, the mosquitoes were terrible. In the week I was just there, my room wasn't actually cleaned, the towels were only replaced once, the coffee cups/ glasses were left where I left them and never cleaned or replaced - I do clean up after myself to prevent attracting bugs, but beyond that, the maid service basically only made the bed daily. The dishes, cutlery and glassware at the buffet were filthy, tables were rarely wiped down and there was often food spilled on the floor that wasn't attended to. The buffet was worse that it has ever been before, the 'speciality' restaurants were little better. Unfortunately, more often than not, if you asked for something from the menu, the response was, 'no, sorry, we don't have'. Other than omelettes or a smoothie, at breakfast, there were a few mystery meat or greasy deep fried balls of dough - that you could try - keep in mind though, anything in the buffet trays has been sitting there for a while collecting flies. One morning, I was looking for tomatoes, the 'executive chef' was walking around so I asked him, he rudely suggested that I didn't look for them and then he looked, realized there weren't any and walked away. He did return a few minutes later with some tomatoes for me but the whole experience was a little rude & baffling. The beach is now a public beach, and the resort seems to have become a very popular destination for the locals to spend their vacations at. Also, it seemed like everyone had their hand out, from the gardeners trying to 'sell you things' from the bushes, to only getting service when you tip. I generally tip at the end of a vacation for good service but it seemed that you had to tip to get any service this time around. The Melia chain should be embarrassed about how this hotel is managed after having talked to several repeat visitors during my week there, I know that I'm not the only one who won't be returning.

Major Disappointment

I was at the Tryp from September 3-10, 2014. Check-in was quick upon arrival. As we were walking to our room, we couldn't believe the state of the resort. It is very old, mouldy and needs major renovations. I felt as though I was at a road side motel. We asked to be changed rooms twice due to mould. Being that I am pregnant and was travelling with a 20 month old, being in an environment with mould is not good for me or my babies. I honestly cried and wanted to go home after being there for less than hour. it was so bad, we were considering calling our travel agent to be transferred to another resort but after speaking to other people and being told that this resort was the nicest of all of the others on the island, we decided to make the best of it. The staff was great. I honestly think the reason for repeat guest is due to the staff. They make you feel welcomed. They are so kind and very personable. You feel like you know them and at the end of your stay, you leave having made several new friends. We especially enjoyed our conversations with the gardeners, particularly Roy, Leo and Wilbert. The food is okay but very repetitive. We always did the fresh stations in the buffet where they cooked the food in front of you. We often had a waiter named Yubley who was so nice and attentive. The beach grill was very nice for lunch. The beach was beautiful. we spent a lot of time at the beach. the tide is very high in the mornings and then again around dinner time. The best time to go to the beach was around noon up until 4pm. I should also warn people travelling to the TRYP, do not leave your towels unattended past 5pm. Security walks around and collects EVERYTHING left behind and it is impossible to get back. you will be stuck having to pay 50-60$ Canadian. I personally think this is one of their scams to make money off towels. A couple we met left their towels and crocs on the beach to take a nice walk together and when they returned everything was gone. Our towels were also taken and when we approached Jorge in guest services he was not helpful at all. In fact, he was very rude. He told us to check back every night around 7pm to see if the towels were returned and of course they were not. When telling him someone at the resort saw security pick them up he said he would call them to see if they had them and of course they did not. every time we went to check guest services to see if they returned, he said he didn't have any at that time but its possible someone else came to collect them as a lot of people have their towels go missing. SO BEWARE OF THIER SCAM. Would I go here again!? Only if they gutted the rooms and replaced everything inside and pressure washed the exterior of the building. Until then, I will not be returning. They are building a new resort on the island that will apparently be a 7 star, yes, you read that right, a 7 star. I would probably go there before I go to any other resort on the island..

Great resort

Simply a great place to vacation.This place is good for singles or family.The staff is unbelievable.The entertainment is great.I would definitely go back .The advantage to go to this resort is that the airport is only 10mins away .Even the bus ride was great.Even though Cuba is not known for its food the restaurants on site are great.Loved the oriental one.As for the beach,it is simply great.

Beautiful Beach. Great for Swimming.

The white sandy beaches did not disappoint. The hotel on the other hand did. It is not a 4 star. Rooms are old and shabby along with the lounge areas. Had to change room due to toilet not functioning but could not change until next day as resort was full. It was not pleasant to stay 30 hrs in a room with a non functioning toilet. Food was pretty good for Cuba.

You get what you pay for

This is our 2nd time to a tryp resort, and also this is our 3rd time to Cayo Coco. We just love the beach so we didn't quite care which resort we go to in Cayo Coco, so we've chosen Tryp on a bargain price. The hotel looks beautiful and the pools and amenities are amazing. I went just last week with my husband and I am 6 and half month pregnant. Before we depart, I've emailed the hotel to clarify some questions, it took them a long time to get back to me but when they finally did, everything we [... read more]nt well. And they have kept their promise to arrange more bottled water for me per day, that was very thoughtful and great. Here are some pros and cons that we've experienced from the hotel, hope this will help for whoever is thinking on a trip there. HOTEL ROOM: We stayed a bit further from the pool and the stage because we requested peach and quiet, so the hotel upgraded us to a Ocean view when we got there. The view is stunning but the room was not the cleanest. There are two double bed in the room instead of one king bed (which we've requested). We didn't want to make a big deal so we stayed in it, but just the 2nd day we were there, one of the double bed leg broke. Thank goodness I wasn't sitting on it at the time, otherwise the shock for the baby and I would be unthinkable. My husband was trying to fix it himself (he is very handy), but after he checked out the bed, he said those legs are temporarily nailed on to the bed, and the plastic legs broke, there is no way he can fix it... So we stayed on one double bed for the rest of our vacation. It's a bit tight since I have a big belly, but we've managed. So a world of advise, please double check your room equipments. Other than that, we just found the room is not as clean as we'd expected. We've killed two cockroaches during our stay which freaked me out, as soon as we came back home, I've sensitized and washed every possible thing I could. We've found the cockroaches on our last day of staying, so I only had one sleepless night. But if you are afraid of bugs like I am, please re-consider...and we think the cockroaches are coming from the AC vent, because they are extremely dirty. You know how duct can get dirty if no one cleans it for a long time. RESORT: The resort however, it's stunning. We loved the pools, and we love the beach. We've also been to another resort (Memories Caribe) in Cayo Coco, their beach is better than Tryp if you want to compare. Their beach is a bit more calm and steady. We found the beach at Tryp is a big choppy, but still beautiful and blue water white sand, you can't ask for more. As for the water sports, we don't think there are lots of complimentary water sports with the resort. You will have to pay for snorkel if you want to. The pools are nice, they have two big pools and one small pool far from the main pool. That's where we mainly rest ourselves everyday since our room was not our favourite through out the trip. FOOD/BEVERAGE: I did not drink any alcohol due to my pregnancy, but my husband did. He has no complain, but just one thing we've noticed on our last day there... If you want pineapple juice, or any other juice, the only bar has it is the lobby bar. My husband loves pineapple juice and pineapple rum, but the pool bar, restaurant bar, snack bar all said they don't have any pineapple juice. Until we were ready to board out bus, we asked the lobby bar, they said they have it. So if there are some drink you don't get at the pool bar, try the lobby bar, they seems to be a bit more variety. We did not bother with a la carte, we stayed with buffet. The buffet is great, all the staff are very nice, especially the grill and the cook stations. You won't have any problem eating at this resort, as a pregnant woman, there are lots things I wasn't suppose to eat, but I did anyways, I had no problem with my stomach. So I'd say food is pretty good at Tryp. CHECK OUT: We were going to pay for late check out, but the front desk told us they will provide a courtesy room for us to change into. So we did not bother with the late check out. At Memories Caribe, we were able to book our courtesy room for a certain time period, so we were going to do the same thing here, but they told us they don't book courtesy rooms, first come first serve. So when we come back to ask for the courtesy room, she told us to go LINE UP at room xxx. No room key, she said someone is there already. We went there, people opened the door and was shocked. They said the front desk told them to bring the room key back once they are done. Also there is no fresh towels in the courtesy room, my husband has to ran back and force from the front desk to the room to ask for towels, but in the end, there were still no towels (even though the front desk said they've sent towels). So we just dried off with our own clothes. While we were showering, there are other people opening the door with the key, and thank goodness my husband was guarding the door for me, otherwise it would be a disaster... Overall, we think it's worth what we paid for, but wouldn't pay more than what we paid for to come back to this resort. They are suppose to be a 4 stars resort, but we think for a 4 stars resort, there are way too many complaining to do. Sure enough the pool, the beach and the food made us happy, but still we shouldn't have that many unhappy experiences. Hopefully Tryp will improved their maintenance on their rooms and also the coordination of their services. We just don't want other people to struggle and frustrated by what we went through. Hotel fair, amazing beach!

As stated above, as far as the hotel goes, I would rate it not more than "fair". It was our 2nd stay at this hotel, and compared to 2 years ago, not much has changed. At our last stay, we were told (and saw ourselves) that "renovations" were started, but 2 years later, not much has changed. We asked to stay in a "renovated" room, and when they took us to take a look to see if we would be happy with it, well, all that changed was the ceramics on the floor, that's it! We asked to be placed in block 6, which is where we stayed the last time, close to everything, and the room was just as "renovated" LOL as the one they showed us in block 12. Food was ok, we managed + the lobster was quite good at the seafood resto, wife and I ate there twice. Drinks were very very disappointing, couldn't get a decent rum & coke, coke as flat as pancakes :( Other dinks were hit & miss. Cuban staff as friendly as they get, but this time around there were some, very few, with not the same friendly Cuban attitude, but hey, we all have bad days...I guess?! Apart from the negativity, we now have been to Cuba 5 times as a family, and the reason is simple....Beautiful Beaches!!! We are not picky when it comes to food so we get back just fine, however I do believe it is time that this hotel gets a major facelift, I know people that have been there at least 20 years ago, and 20 years later not much has changed :( ***Not sure if I would recommend***

We Would Go Back In An Instant!

The Tryp is an amazing resort compared to others in Cuba. The management goes out of their way to please. The food is excellent with lots of choices. The beach is lovely and clean with plenty of beach chairs. We especially liked the quiet pool area. The bartenders were wonderful there. The restaurant on the beach is good. They even had lobster there one day for 10 cuc. It was very warm when we went because we went in June, would choose to go at another time of year next time. The lobby bar was n [... read more]ice and they had some good entertainment some evenings. The nightly entertainment was also enjoyable. The rooms were a little dated but their was plenty of hot water with good water pressure. There is a lot of walking involved at this resort if you stay close to the beach. If you have mobility problems you should stay in a building closer to the lobby. One week is plenty to stay in Cayo Coco unless you can afford to take some trips away from the resorts.

Just a great getaway from Montreal.

We have been there 3 times in the past year and it is always a great trip. We have talked to other travelers staying at other resorts only to hear how much they wished they had stayed at Tryp instead. The trip is simple and easy being only minutes from the Airport. The staff is very warm and friendly and will receive you well at Tryp. The facilities and excursions should keep you busy and entertained while enjoying the beauty of the area. The food has always been very good offering you lots of  [... read more]choices. The rooms are Clean Comfortable and nice. Perhaps a little renovation would make them 5 star but you won't be wanting while there. If I can offer a suggestion to those travelling there, Say Hola to the people working there and open the door to new friends to look forward to seeing on a return visit.

Could be better

First the good things: 1. the beach at Cayo Coco really nice 2. price 3. food was ok 4. Entertainment was fun Not so good things: 1. stagnant smelly water in the lobby area 2. mosquitoes 3. Unpleasant staff (specially at snack bar) Even tips don't make bid difference. We really like Ricardo, Fis and Elder Lorenzo 4. the property is in need of repair 5. Had a good vacation

i liked the buildings are not far from the ocean, good entertainment, good restaurants, and above all- lively and curtsies staff. good friends,and neighbors, and a good weather. the workout facility could could use a little uplift.....!

Paradise

We just simply loved it all!!! The beach was so beautiful. The people (staff) so friendly. The food was so so good, loved the daily fresh fish, fruit and everything else. Room was also great! Weather WOW....so hot, loved it! Have been to Cuba more than 10 times but this was first time to this resort. Loved it so much that we are going back in December and bringing my son so that he too can have an amazing experience. Thank you Cuba for being so beautiful!

Friendly resort

The food was great to our surprise and most employees were adorable especially our breakfast and lunch servers. On the other hand the rooms were very damp and it was impossible to keep our clothes dry which made our stay less than comfortable but overall we had a good time !

Stay somewhere else

A little aged...needs attention. Staff treats you like another number... Not what i have experienced from my other great travels. Had to pay $20 for the orange 0ld towel that was taken from our lounge chair or "myself and two children would be detained by immigration at the airport"! Its a three star or less!! Disapointing.

Friendly resort

The food was great, a la cartes were wonderful, grounds were clean and pretty. Rooms are very tired and old require some sprucing up but very clean. The Cuban people are so nice. Lining up to set up a la carte dining was terrible and very difficult to get what you wanted.

Not what I expected

We decided to go to this resort based on reviews I've been to Caya cocoa before and thought it would be the best place for a quiet week of relaxation but when we got there there must of been about 500 teenagers at this resort and was shocked when we booked we were not notified that there was an s trip at his resort and was very disappointed with the agent not notifying us because if we were warned I would have opted for a different hotel breakfast lunches and dinners we could never find tables a [... read more]nd at times there were lines ups to get into the buffet I have never in my travels experienced this.rhere were more cons than pros I was disappointed . Would not recommend

We were always the kind of people to say "It is what you make it", to other people's bad reviews. But this resort is a 2+ at best. Extremely outdated resort. Missing umbrellas around the pools, broken loungers not taken away. We were kicked out of the quiet pool by 5pm everyday. The worker would say 'pool closed' and lay all the chairs down (loudly). Even on the beach, they would start coming around at 4pm putting all the loungers away around you! No palapas, everyone was crowded under a non-tha [... read more]tched structure made from young trees, each section fit 4 people, but they were all connected. We had won the trip and we upgraded our room to superior oceanview, the only thing good about it was the oceanview. A cabin in the woods had better maintenance than that. We like to unpack and put our clothes in dresser drawers....there was only a credenza with a chair holding the door shut. Towels were stained, sheets were stained and ripped. Our sheets didn't get changed. We thought they were, but the bottom sheet was only flipped over, we knew this by the rips and stains. The last night we were there, the bottom sheet was finally taken, but not replaced, the top sheet was put in its place leaving us with no top sheet, only the bedspread. The light shades in the room were broken and had burn marks on them. The couple next to us smoked in their room and the wooden divider door between our rooms allowed the smoke to come in whenever we opened our patio doors. The food wasn't always labeled correctly, there were birds flying around the buffet and taking food from the buffet! If you didn't tip well you didn't get the service. Even the pasta area in the buffet wanted tips. There were a few who weren't like that though, but we didn't encounter her until the last night. Mulitple guests we spoke to would not come back. Two ladies with regular rooms, were on their 3rd change of rooms in less than a day. We saw a person covered in bedbug bites and another lady was in misery from a rash all over her body. We always spray our bed with bug spray to be on the safe side. No toilet paper or paper towel to dry your hands in the public washrooms. And I can't believe I'm saying this....but one women bartender made the drinks soo strong, you couldn't drink them (we heard others comment on this also) It's not the worker's fault, they are only being told what to do or not being shown or trained properly in the way to do things. Not a good experience all around.

Amazing resort!

our family with 2 teenagers stayed at the Trp Cayo Coco during march break 2014. we all had an amazing time! beautiful beach, amazing staff, and great food! the room was not fancy but spacious and clean. we will certainly return!

Totally worth it

Great resort, nicely organized bus pick up from the airport and easy check in process. Plan to spend at least an hour lining up the next morning to book your restaurant reservations. It's a pain but very worthwhile as you will get very tired of the buffet food if you don't have any a la carte meals to mix it up. Beach is great, very well maintained - just remember to bring your snorkel gear so you can see the fish at the reefs. The larger pool can get old very fast as this is where they have activities throughout the day which basically comprises someone yelling into a microphone and lots and lots of music by Pitbull inbetween. The food is totally fine - I mean you're in a tropical country on an island so if you're going to complain when they run out of bacon then maybe you should stay on your couch. They have fresh fruit (papaya, guava, canteloupe, pineapple) and you can have them make it into a smoothie or eat it as is. There is a nice mix of Cuban food and some North American food but again, you're on vacation, live a little and try some local food! As I mentioned before, the buffet can get quite repetitive so do try the restaurants - mainly the Cuban, Seafood and BBQ restaurants while the Italian was quite disappointing in my opinion. The absolute must do is visiting the local restaurant Lenny's. Just grab a cab at the front of the hotel - it will cost you about 20 CUC and you will arrive at a small outdoor restaurant overlooking the ocean. The view is spectacular and the food is quite possibly the best seafood I've ever had. For 15 CUC you get a lobster tail, fish, shrimp, rice and salad. I would go back to Cayo Coco just to eat at Lenny's. In summary, this place is worth it. The hotel is clean and well maintained, the staff are friendly and the beach is clear and not overcrowded. If you want a 5 star luxury hotel with room service and 2000 thread count bedding then you should probably just stay in a big city in the developed world. But if you want a relaxing trip to a beautiful beach with a dose of Latin culture then definitely try this place out.

Great Family Resort

Everything about this resort was great, other than the room. Entertainment was awesome! Kids were icluded in entertainment every night which was nice. Food was great, beach was amazing and clean. Very friendly people. The rooms were a little run down but clean. I would reccomend this resort to families with younger children for sure!

I have Ben here twice now and intend to go back!

While there were some issues with water one day it was no fault of the hotel. The entire area had issues. Beaches are stunning. Water crystal clear. You could not go away for a weekend for the price I paid to go here. Pools great. Everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time.
