Beautiful Resort!

Very clean and beautiful resort. Friendly staff! Everything was beautiful. Only complaint was the usual, no hot food at the buffet. The food was always lukewarm at best and sometimes downright cold. The a la carte restaurants were not much better. Don't know why hot food can't be hot. Other than that a beautiful spot and would return. If not for the food would be a five star all the way

Very nice place, nice people, Food was ok not great And honestly the area in general is almost all American money not Mexican so for a Canadian can get expensive quick!!! Because of that i wouldn't go back but the place is very nice.

Excellent resort!

Very, very nice, clean resort. Good food, lots of options to suit everyone's taste. Strongly recommend lunch at the fresh taco cart by the twin swim-up bars. Friendly staff. Large resort with lots of choice for pools. No trouble getting a good lounger at the beach or at the pool. Overall excellent!

GREAT TRIP

GREAT HOTEL ,GROUNDS WHERE VERY WELL KEPT,STAFF WAS GREAT,FOOD SHOULD BE HOTTER,AND MORE OFF A CHOICE AT BUFFETS,FOOD WAS GOOD BUT NOT GREAT.BEACH WAS NICE A LITTLE ROCKING IN SPOTS AND A LITTLE BIT OFF A DIP TO GET IN TO OCEAN

Stunning Resort!!!

We booked this resort as a group of 5. We traveled in January into February. The resort was very welcoming. Check in went smooth and our rooms were clean and ready for us at 3:00 pm. It took us a couple of days to get an understanding of the resort. So much to see. Enjoyed the restaurants and the staff. We had some great staff share some of their stories and were very friendly. Had a great time!

Great Resort

Would of liked a king or queen bed in the room. Ala cartes ok- Miso and La Hacienda being the best. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice to have 3 places you could go for breakfast and lunch and if you wanted to stay in your bathing suit they had food at most pools and at the beach which was great. Sunwing an hour late leaving and returning which needs to be improved on.

Very Nice Resort

Just got back from a week at this resort - very nice. I'm 27 and went with my younger sister and my mom. About an hour drive from Cancun airport. Very big (lots of walking) resort (2 lobbies, 4 buffets, 8 restaurants, big pool in center and smaller long pools in between room buildings and center pool). Spacious bedroom. Food was great! Japanese restaurant was a nice performance. Staff were all friendly and entertainment staff were fun. Beach was nice. We went to Coco Bongo Friday nice - cool nig [... read more]htclub and rope/bungee performance. Nexus staff told us of an extra excursion fee afterwards - so make sure you know what you're buying. As always and everywhere, be safe when leaving the resort and going into Playa del Carmen.

Very nice resort

the staff were very friendly room were very clean lots of walking food was good the beach was nice but it was very windy so the life guard would not let people go in the water at the beach on red flags pool chairs were hart to get some times

Average at best not worthy of 4 star rating.

I would say that having researched MANY hotels online before we booked, we chose this one because it seemed to be good value for what you get. We booked the platinum section, which was closest to the beach, and supposedly allowed us premium service and premium alcohol. It was more convenient, and I am glad we did that, though I was disappointed that while we got premium alcohol options, we were served instant coffee. I travel a lot, and have been to many 4 and 5 star resorts in the Maya Riviera. This is my least favorite so far. First and foremost the food in the restaurants is absolutely terrible. Let me rephrase that - if you are used to eating microwaved and frozen food at home, then you might not find the food that bad. But wow - it was the worst food I have ever had at an all-inclusive resort in any country. In all fairness, I read the poor food reviews before we booked, but some people (clearly devoid of taste buds) had mentioned that the food was actually good, so we decided that it couldn't be all that bad. We were three families that traveled together and collectively we tried almost all of the restaurants. In the end it was disappointment all the way around, and we all ended up eating at the buffet. The buffet wasn't bad (at least had lots of fresh veggie and fruit options, and the bread was great, as were the chips and salsa/guacamole) but it was a lot of the same lunch and dinner, and so it got tired after awhile. The kids Pirate buffet was the worst - food turned to rubber under heat lamps for who knows how long - burgers swimming in a congealed pot of liquid water/grease mixture. So disgusting. The resort itself, upon arriving was very clean and the grounds look beautiful. The beach in front of the resort was nice too - we walked a good distance along the beach in both ways and our beach was among the best for swimming and lounging. It did have a lot rocks that you have to watch out for while wading into the water. Water shoes for small kids is a good idea. The rooms are clean, though musty smelling, and the balcony areas often smelled swampy. You will be hard pressed to find a platinum room with ocean views because most of the rooms but up against the unmanicured jungle areas (protected), so basically you are staring into knarly jungle bush. If you are lucky and get an upper room, your chances of having a slice of ocean view is better. If you have small kids who wake up easily, I found it very annoying to have the maintenance staff yelling across the courtyard at 7:00am. It echoed and was much louder than I am sure they realized. This happened every morning. The drinks were mainly good, but inconsistent in how they were made/tasted from one bar to the next. I love mojitos, and one bar did them well, and a few of the others had so much bar lime that they were sickly sour/sweet. I just ordered from the bar that did them well. Consistency would be nice though. The pools were nice, but need some repair in the tiles. My son scratched up the back of his legs sliding off a tiled stool in the pool that had lost its tiles. Don't forget to pack sunscreen, bug spray, room snacks, as any incidentals that you forget are VERY expensive on resort (common sense). The gym was nice and machines were in good working order. The spa was average for ambiance, but the massage therapist was amazing. That's about it. All in all, I won't be going back and I wouldn't recommend it to friends. There are many better options in the Mayan Riviera.

Pretty good

We travelled as a group of 23 through sunwing vacations Dec 31-Jan 7. We were adults and children of various ages. Youngest child was 3 and oldest was 15. I'll start by saying the grounds of this hotel are pristine. Truly beautiful. It's big! There are 2 sides, sunset and riviera. They are the same hotel and share the amenities. Pretty sure the riviera side would have full sun all day. Our room was located in the middle of the resort near the "party pool". If want a quiet vacation stay closer to the lobby or the beach as it's pretty loud here. Which is what we like! The rooms are ok. Starting to show their age. A little musty but were clean. The bedding is not great at all. This was disappointing. They did have nice big walk in showers. Buffets were excellent. Possibly the best I've ever had. We visited 3 a la carte. Japanese - excellent. Italian - awful. Fondue - ok. A la carte reservations are a pain in the ass to make!! You can only book 3 days ahead and 1 at a time only starting at 2pm. There was always a line. We had to go the lobby everyday and spend 40 mins in line to make one reservations and had to do that 3 times. Not what I what to be doing on vacation. The pools are great. So many to choose from. The beach is nice too. A little rocky but if you go to the right side it's clear. Also if you're with adults only there's a hidden spot down the beach to the left a ways that's always empty and had a bar with no line!! Swimming is not great there but we just walked down when we wanted to swim. We visited the disco a couple nights. It was ok. Never many people in there but the music was good. All the staff are very friendly and eager to help you. We walked around the "family section" of the resort. Not good! The building is rough. However there is a great splash pad/pool there for kids. Highly recommend taking the shuttle to playa del Carmen and taking the ferry to Cozumel. We Rented scooters and toured the island. We did this for fairly cheap. We didn't book this through an excursion. Just went on our own and saved big $$$. All in all a pretty good spot. It's a little big for me. Some reviews mentioned carts to get you around but we never saw any coming around. From the beach to lobby it's about 8-10 minute walk. It was pretty busy. So lots of lines and waiting for drinks but it is the high season.

Ok

We are cruisers and decided to try an all inclusive to compare. Grand Sunset Princess being a 5 star was a bit dissapointing to us for the price we paid and we are not sure what makes a 5 star but this didn't cut it for us. The beauty and cleanliness and gardens we could understand but the rest was lacking at least compared to the cruises we have been on. Our check in was pretty disappointing and they didn't check us in at the lobby counter it was in some outdoor area where they photo copied our [... read more] passports, made us wait til all groups were there then called out our names gave us a room key and told us we get what we get and if there were any mistakes we would have to wait til the next day to make changes. No map no schedule of shows or locations of anything and most people got stuck carrying their own luggage all over the huge resort trying to find their rooms. Very disorganized right of the bat did not give us a good feeling to start our week. The buffets were nice looking and the food looked great but unfortunately lacked in flavour and it was hard to find something that actually was worth a "wow yummy." The burgers by the pool were good cause they were actually barbqued and the soft taco stand was decent as well. Booking the specialty restaurants was a pain and they refused to book our group of 23ppl together which was weird considering they could put a big wedding group together. I guess you have to say your a wedding party instead of just a large group. So we always ate broken up until the last day when I gave them a bit of a hard time to sit us together for our last night together. The Miso oriental was decent, the Fondu was pretty tasty, the Japanese was fabulous ( the best meal all week) and the Italian was bland and had the same chicken parm as the buffet. Our friends tried the steak restaurant and said their meals weren't even edible. The pools seemed well kept and lot's of them to choose from but hard to get good sunny chairs as ppl get up at the crack of dawn to reserve them but we always found chairs somewhere. The animals walking around were cool to see. The pool bars had very hard workers and they did a good job, good variety of drinks but the slush drinks barely got us buzzed so if you want to feel effects drink beer or shooters. The beach was absolutly breathtaking and again you had to reserve prime spots early but there were always a chair or two somewhere. There was seaweed areas but the tractors went buy to clear it and workers were even raking and shoveling it away. The entertainment was decent but again we were never clear on times and location and the workers we would ask never seemed to be able to tell us the right info. Our day trip to Tulum and Xel Ha was easy to book and was amazing! Well organized and better food. Our shopping in Playa Del Carmen was also well worth it as everywhere else was a bit of a rip off. Even the hotel market night, thank god we went shopping in town first so we knew the price comparison. The workers worked hard but it was not very often someone would come by the pools to serve you so we would either just wait or go ourselves to the bar. We were generous with tipping but when we would run out of smaller bills we would ask a buffet or bar staff to trade in our $20's or $10's and everytime they would act like it was a hardship then comeback and try to short change us which was really frustrating and ignorant considering we were going to give them some for doing that for us anyhow. But because they took it upon themselves to scam us for change it made us lack trust in them, and trust us, they had tons of change it was clear to see everyone tipping around us that they had plenty of change. Check out day was confusing once again as one person told us to put our bags in one area while someone else told us to put it somewhere else. In the end when it was time to leave we got our luggage so I guess that is all that matters but seriously this hotel needs major organizational and information skills. Overall the weather was great we didn't get sick and it was nice enough but based on this resort experience Carnival cruises are superior in food, entertainment, service, organization and they were cheaper than the price we paid at Grand Sunset. Our last cruise was $500 less and so taking that $500 difference to pay for booze on a ship would be well worth it and the drinks on the ship are better too.

Please let it be known that this hotel is humangus. It is not suitable for people who have difficulty walking. I got lost few times and because I had difficulty mobilizing I became very unhappy and distressed until I moved to a room closer to the main lobby. Also we discovered other accomodations that exist for disabled people that we were not told about it by the travel agency. There exist suites that open up to a swimming pool from your suit thru few steps from the balcony .I wish somebody [... read more] told us about it before. Incredible

I can speak on behalf of Steve and myself ….this resort was top notch!! Both Steve and I are experienced travellers and have done quite a bit of travelling to the caribbean and this resort was by far the nicest. Great food at the a la cartes as well as the buffet. The staff were accommodating and very friendly. The rooms were clean and well attended to. We would definitely plan to come back!!

Amazing!

The Grand Sunset Princess is the perfect resort. The food was great with lots of choices. Lots of pools and fun activities. The grounds were absolutely beautiful. The staff went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. We have been to many resorts in the Cancun and Mayan area and this was by far the best!!!

We love the resort the ground are excellent the lobby was great I stayed at the ville suite we have all great thing about this resort I would definitely go back again we Love it I'd like to thank Tina is at trip advisor she was fantastic

Awesome place!

It was my first time in Mexico. I travelled with hubby and 2 year old daughter and was pleasantly surprised. The grounds were beautiful, rooms were nice and staff was great. The food was awesome although we didn't get to try all the restaurants. There wasn't as much walking as I thought there would be considering the size of the resort. The animation staff was awesome. Platinum is the way to go!

Recently stayed at the Grand Sunset Princess Resort with my husband and another couple. We stayed in the platinum room and were very happy with the service and the people. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. Pool was great, spent every morning at the ocean. Room was beautiful and enjoyed the Jacuzzi on the balcony and in our room. You could always find something to eat...the salsa and chips were so fresh and yummy. The only downside would be the size of the resort, it is huge. But [... read more] it is great to get some walking in and there is always a shuttle to take. Favourite restaurant was the steakhouse.

Good Resort

The rooms, public areas, pools were very clean, aesthetically, especially the common areas this resort was very beautiful. 98% of the staff were exceptionally helpful. The buffet restaurants were good with one being much better than the rest as it had a theme every night. The food was never hot and even when we went to the Chill Out Restaurant and paid extra for the seafood dinner, it was not very warm and got cold very fast, that was disappointing. The entertainment was great, although the main theatre was so cold that it was very uncomfortable in the beginning until more people came and then you body got used to the frigid temperature, we both actually came home with terrible colds. The music in the plaza bar was always great. As a whole the resort was a little too big for our liking and we spoke to many people who thought the same. Also the markings for the rooms were very poor so that it was easy to get lost , especially the first couple of days. I was surprised that our bathroom did not have any tissues, this is standard in most resorts/hotels. Also the common areas washrooms had no hook for the purse, again common in other resorts/hotels.Out of several hot tubs in the pool area, we did not have one that was working.

Like Many Said While There- Never return

From the instance I arrived I had to change rooms, the view I was expressed I would have was depressing & why would a single person need a room with two queen beds and the jacuzzi on balcony was badly rusted, but the room it self were seemingly attractive , but after a little financial inspiration I was able to get moved to a room with not only one bigger bed, but more liquor. Now breakfast was kind of ok same for 9 days and not a large variety like some, but it may not have been the variety a [... read more]s much as not changing it up, now staff were mostly all nice but in the restaurants or buffets it seem like a contest to get the customer to sit in their section, I tipped my first server 7$ American when I asked if she would be my server for the next few days she said yes & I never seen her again, the host said she had booked off because doctor said she had flu Now the entire time almost all meals in buffet were same , after while you lost interest & no one tells anyone about cooking show , everyone I spoke to never heard about it I was blessed to over hear another talk about it, it was delightful . Another night I was suppose to attend the dinner with music entertainment, but it said no where on it Riviera , it had a long name many could not pronounce and several staff new nothing about the place, actually many new nothing about hardly any parts of resort, I ended up walking to the Riviera twice because staff and others would say you have to go to Riviera, in all new clothing , I walked to Riviera Hotel twice with staff there sending everywhere & the buffet at Riviera said it closed was no longer open The Platinum beach was farthest from Platinum area, walking was crazy , I lost 9 pounds there, everyone complained about walking & transportation. I mean honestly I would give the staff about the best review & I went with 1500$ American & never left resort went no excursions yet tipped nearly 1300$ American I gave real silver bracelets many name brand Running shoes near 600$ worth name brand new brand name shirts , shorts socks. Even one person working in lobby , said he had been robbed of wallet watch cell phone And I gave him my 175$ divers watch, The Platinum pool was small & non eventful not interesting cheap snacks, beds only on one side of pool so if sun is shining from one way no use using the bed, Sports Bar was nice but very bad that they had no control over what was watched and sent to a farther lobby just to ask if I could get World Cup Hockey on, but it was nice in there And Archery & children's play ground were in middle of nowhere and had no idea how to sign up for events or archery and I had to take a cab to Airport when the girl for Nexus assured I would get a room call & ride left at 6:50 & it was 5:50 and I tried to tell her my new room number but she assured me I would be located so I was in my room till 5:47 and no one called because I booked late check out for 6 so I could be ready for 6:50 and event sent my suitcase over at 11:15 AM to the main pick up lobby and while I sat in Platinum beach area while the bar was open & I was told I could wait and a server would come by I waited 1 hour 11 minutes for one drink and Chill was good for 10$ but for food it was not worth eating there and small menu, but out of all honesty I wish I could see the staff again but the amount of complaints I listen to seen and experienced it was not a very joyful place. I love the Mexican people will still go back, but not to that Hotel or Yucatan which I already wrote about & I don't even want to try Riviera and Photo Lab is complete rip off to people especially honey mooning people newly weds or just whoever they think they can rip off, many could not come close to affording to being taken ransom for our pictures. I bought there jump drive & I had 23 pictures & it would take 29 seconds to put them on the stick and they wanted 300 after I already paid 110 the day before for 9 and 5 pictures 6x8 and so many people had to just say no and that was sad I had tell them to keep 14 I could not be black mailed like that.. All in All I was disappointed for the cost and hype. Sorry again but truth hurts but truth is best..

So beautiful

The grand sunset princess is such a beautiful, big resort. The staff do such a great job on maintaining the grounds and they are so friendly. I really enjoyed the options they had for food and all the different types of a la carte restaurants. I am very happy that Teresa recommended this hotel to my friends and I.
