Melia Jardines del Rey: Nonstop Disappointment
Unfortunately my stay here for the week was nonstop disappointment.
Our room wasn’t ready for check in until 6:30pm, when we entered our bed sheets had blood and semen stains and the pillows smelled like sweaty hair with mascara residue (clearly not washed). Our room phone was broken, we had to walk to the lobby and follow up 3x to change the sheets, we didn’t get clean sheets until 9:30pm, and our phone was never fixed.
We only had 2 toilet paper replenished in our room throughout the we[... read more]ek, and you were lucky if there was ANY toilet paper in any of the other washrooms. It seemed they could only afford to deliver a limited amount of TP and water bottles on certain days. There were 2 days we were given no bottled water, so if you’re still convinced to go here pack your own toilet paper and water.
There was no point walking over to the customer service office multiple times, they would lie in our face and say “it was just delivered” and we would walk back to the room to find nothing, then walked back and they would lie again, in a way to just get ride of our presence and not deal with the situation. In fact, the one day I asked for some TP to use in the lobby washroom, the manager laughed and said “no”. Very very rude staff, only nice staff were the gardeners (unless you pay the staff money they are friendlier).
They did not replace our sheets or towels once throughout the week even when they were visibly dirty. Bed bugs as well, not surprising since clearly they don’t even change new sheets when a new guest arrives, my husband and I woke up to multiple bites.
Internet went down frequently and is only available in the lobby. Don’t expect working internet. If it doesn’t cut out, a WhatsApp message takes about 5 minutes to send.
It seems this specific resort has some sort of arrangement for the locals, about 50% of the guests were locals and staff would prioritize service for them. With the Cuban food shortage buffets would always run out, the locals would get to cut in line and typically took an entire bread basket or entire platter of meat and once the actual tourists were next the chefs said no more food. One day it took 1 hour to get a hotdog/ French fries at the grill while we watched a family of locals be served 2 replenishments of a PLATTER of hotdogs hand delivered by the manager.
Even without the shortage lineups for food in general was ridiculous, this place used to have a pizza oven along the beach and you now need to wait in a half hour lineup at a restaurant, you can’t take it to go. Lineup for eggs took on average 30-45 minutes. Only one bar is opened after 10pm. They only had beer and rum available when they ran out which was frequent.
Also note to bring your own beach towels, there was only 1 day they had clean beach towels to replace.
Good things:
Lots of friendly stray cats if you like cats

Grand Memories Varadero: Nice Resort!!
This was a nice resort. It was bigger than we were used to. There’s two pools, one quiet and one filled with more excitement. Both of them have swim up, which was nice to choose where you wanted to go during the day. The food was ok. Cuba is going through a hard time right now, so I took that in consideration. Always something to eat just might not have been as fancy as we like. Everything was clean. We always saw maids cleaning the hallways in the bathrooms. On that note public bathrooms somet[... read more]imes had no toilet paper or no toilet seats. You learn to deal with it. The one downfall was that they were tons of mosquitoes in the lobby in the Cuban bar and on the beach. So bring bug spray, we upgraded to the diamond club and thought it was worth it. We had our own little breakfast and lunch restaurant that they served you and it was fast no lineups. Got a nice ocean view room, but it is furthest from everything we had one specialty dinner that serve lobster, chicken And smoked salmon salad.

Memories Flamenco Beach Resort: Amazing Resort but will never go back
This resort has the best layout and the most incredible beach of all the trips we took over the last 25 years all over the Caribbean but will never ever go back.
It took 4 days before we finally got TOILET PAPER in our room, and 5 days to bring clean bath towels. No eggs, no bread, no water. 2nd day in we had to go off resort to buy water. Bringing our concerns to guest service and specially to our Sunwing Rep didn’t help because the only answers we got is that they had issues getting stuff i[... read more]n. Being in Cuba we knew they had issues and we didn’t blame the resort, the only one to blame is SUNWING, they knew about all issues and problems Cuba are experiencing and SUNWING should have been honest and upfront with their customers and tell them all this but in my mind they’re only in it to make money. Every drinks were watered down, even the coffee and meal were cold. Even air conditioning was never fixed in our room either.

Starfish Varadero: Starfish
The bungalow accommodation was excellent. Lots of room in the bedroom(3 beds) and the living room was great. The walk in shower was a great bonus. There were 2 patios with chairs on each.
The pool and a bar with a canteen was nearby.
The buffet was on the 3rd floor of the hotel with eating space both inside and out. The elevator was not in use and the stairs made it a lot of work to get up there.
The food was repetitive but there was certainly enough considering there were shortages.
The [... read more]beach was beautiful and when there is no wind the water very calm and warm.
It was a good resort!

Occidental Arenas Blancas: Awesome Trip and stay
My family and I had a great time at the resort. The rooms are great and the food is edible, we were told to bring salt and pepper and hot sauce to spice things up. We don't have any complaints about Occidental Arenas Blanca. People are awesome the beach is to die for. Varadero is safe outside the resort. We did some great tours to Havana and Matanzas Yumuri tour, the guides were awesome. Do some snorkelling, It'sAwesome. Buy some Cuban rum and cigars. We will definitely go back to Cuba

Playa Cayo Santa Maria: Amazing customer service
The staff is amazing, Abel, Paulino and Elsa at the beach bar are a ray of sunshine ? they make everyday amazing. Yenisey, Nelson and Emily in the lobby provide amazing customer service ?. It is a shame that people leave cups everywhere. Clients need to either bring a recycled cup or purchase one. No more plastic cups or glass. The resort needs a lot of TLC, walls , flooring and stairwells are crumbling. There needs to be more mix options for drinks, diet coke, sparkling water, real fruit [... read more]juice. I have been at this resort more than 18 times and continue to visit because of the people who work at the resort, the customer service and of course the beautiful beach.

Grand Memories Holguin: Did Not Live Up to Expectation!
SUMMARY – we were there Apr. 10 - 21, 2024 and are unlikely to return.
When considering this review, we are mustard people, not Grey Poupon. Cuba offers exceptional value for the price. We have been to 5 Cuban resorts in the past 2 years. 3 of the 5 we would go back to.
SANCTUARY – did not live up to expectation and some of the advertised claims were not provided or available. Principally, we were told to go early Sunday morning to book a la carte reservations for the next week which we did[... read more]. All times around 7:00 p.m. were already gone. Our butler never approached us to book reservations as others seemed to get.
CHECK-IN – very easy and our room was ready.
RESORT – very well taken care of. I saw staff cleaning railings three times.
ROOM – quite roomy and a nice layout. Air conditioning would stop / start erratically.
STAFF – unlike previous resorts, we really did not connect with staff, but the service was very good.
BEACH – important to us, this beach was disappointing for us considering the coral starts about 50 feet from the shore. Bring lake shoes if you go. All other aspects were fine. This beach ranks last out of the 5 we’ve been to. By example, Grand Aston Cayo Paredon Cayo Coco where most of the beach is powdery sand which extends way out into the ocean including sandbars. You can walk for miles along the beach.
POOLS – all fine other than the lounge chairs are horrendous.
FOOD – for the most part, typical Cuban spread. We were pleased with the a la carte restaurants. Buffet had eggs 2/3 breakfasts, bacon rarely, bottled water rarely, wine always. Shortages are a Cuba issue, not the resort.
WI-FI – excellent! Login details were good for the duration of our stay.
TIPPING – we live by the belief that Cuban people need some help and that if you take care of people, they take care of you. We bring lots of stuff to hand out and tip as well. Do not bring coins. Buy coins from the staff, tip with the coins, and then buy the coins at the end of the stay.
MISC. – mosquitoes were a non-issue.
FACEBOOK GROUP – it was apparent that there are some people who are passionate about this resort, and Cuba. At one point, it was over-the-top when one FB member criticized another’s FB post. The FB post wrote that the resort did not deliver as promised, twice, for a 6-year-old birthday cake. The FB member told them they should go to the Dominican Republic. Please consider that one person’s experience / expectation may not be the same as yours. Never discourage people from going to Cuba! Think about the amount of your all-inclusive cost, and tips, that one person going to Cuba puts into the Cuban economy. I struggle with Cuba, and Sunwing nonsense, but still want to go with our next trip scheduled for the Fall.

I absolutely love staying here. Staff are so friendly and accommodating and really help make the trip feel special. Yuri is amazingly kind and always checked to see how hd could make our stay better. Our room attendant Maricella was so sweet. The bartenders Carlos, Livia and Jimmy are fantastic. Everything was well maintained and the pool in the premium area is my favourite. Club Kawama: Cuba struggles, this resort is in the battle
We had very comfortable beds, and an ocean view. Coffee was on point. Only 1 day we had no coffee due to the machine being broken in the lobby and the coffee bar was without water. Both resolve by supper time.
It was spring break for the Cubans and you could tell that they have done without. Manners were in short supply. The lobby bar would not serve you if you stood at the bar, but never politely told new or old guess, leaving some guest to be insulted by being ignored. A simple have a seat [... read more]and we will be happy to serve you , could have gone a long way.
A reconfiguration of the dinning area would alleviate the long lines for the buffets. There was always lots of food, just repetitive and not always appealing to our palates.
we were given extra a la carte for the evenings, so this was appreciated.
The resort wa s clean.
Beer was plentiful, but as we are not drinkers we can not comment on other drinks.
I have been to Kawama's before and I will return again.

Melia Costa Rey: Horrible resort
This hotel should not have been accepting anyone during the month of April at all!! This hotel was undergoing major maintenance repairs and upgrades for incoming investor's during the month of April while we were there for a 2 week vacation that quickly turned into an awful vacation the first 24hrs we were there. We stayed for 2 days and during that time we spent most of it with their office services and our Air Transit rep to have us moved to another hotel or fly us home at our own expense!! th[... read more]ere was no ice, no rum, no fancy mixed drinks, food was sub par even for Cuba, noise all day from construction and repairs, many bars were closed and in repair, gazebo for weddings on the beach was torn down(2 weddings were there at the time) no night entertainment as it was closed also, paint falling on you as you walked to your room, resort hallways/room were at best a 1* not the 4* they advertised. We were finally moved after much discussions with our Air Transit rep to the Grand Aston in Cayo Paredon which made our vacation 100% better. We got to the Gran Marena on April 4th and they finally closed it down on the 10 of April and were moving people to whatever hotels they could secure that had room for people there longer than 1 week....just terrible

Playa Pesquero: Great vacation!
We were there for 8 glorious days. The room was very clean and comfortable, the staff were pleasant and helpful, the pool was really nicely laid out and the beach was absolutely wonderful. We had been warned not to expect too much in terms of food and that would be the only iffy thing about this trip, however we were impressed with two of the à la carte restaurants. We really enjoyed our add-on excursions: Blue Adventure (snorkeling), Jeep Safari (back-country driving, horseback riding, speed bo[... read more]at) and Deep Sea Fishing. We also highly recommend taking the Bye-Bye Holguin Tour. We would definitely go back.

Paradisus Varadero: Wonderful (if you come prepared)
We stayed on the regular side (NOT the reserve) and glad that we did as the main area had a good vibe going on while the reserve side was far too quiet and remote. The overall feel of the resort is lovely although it need of repair and maintenance. The beach is INCREDIBLE and the pool area is enormous and plenty of space for all ages. The resort staff are nice and do what they can to make your stay enjoyable considering the limitations Cuba has on food and drinks. Our hotel room was OK (a l[... read more]ittle tired and in need of repair (broken lamp, no hot water the entire week, not REALLY enough space for 4 people, not enough blankets) BUT we spent most of our time outdoors poolside or at the beach. Although the food was limited to about 50 ingredients total the staff did their best to make it interesting. There was always enough and we always had clean water to drink. What I don't recommend is the a la carte restaurants...the food is better at the resorts...and you have to get in line early to get a place setting. I would just stick to the buffets and you'll find something you like.
Cuba is experiencing a tough time at the moment with resource and food shortages so the resort did a good job accomodating guests considering all of this. We came prepared with condiments, salad dressing and some snacks and had a great time. I would come back but would be cautious in which friends to recommend the same to as you really have to be prepared for less comforts than you would get in Mexico. If you're easy going Cuba will be fine.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Good
The grounds were under construction when we first arrived on Saturday and our rooms were not ready. The reception desk was a bit disorganized and seemed flustered at times. Food was a hit or miss but
Out of the 3 restaurants that you could book the best one was the Japanese Al- cart. Very entertaining and food was hot. The buffets was ok but a little disappointing with limited selections. The staff did what they could do and always trying to please the guests. Our room was well kept cleaned b[... read more]ut we also left many small items and a tip for the maid everyday. By Monday you could start to see changes with the grounds, the food was improving and the pool area was starting to look cleaner. One issue that should be noted was a few quests felt it was there place to grab the pool side chairs very early with towels or books. As well as allowing guests to sit on top of the swim up bar when you are trying to be served a drink. No one ever asked them to get down. The entertainment was ok but nothing to brag about. I give credit to the performers who did their best and always had a smile on their faces. I would rate this 3.5 and on the upward swing to improving.

Playa Cayo Santa Maria: All inclusive…sort of…
We went to Cuba 11 years ago to celebrate our 10th anniversary and returned to a different part of the island for our 21st anniversary. An important change since our last trip is the underground currency economy. You will not need to change your Canadian, or US (I can not confirm Europeon currency) currency to Cuban pesos. You can pay for excursions with cash (Canadian or US) or credit card. If you need to break a $20 or $50 bill, ask one of the severs in the buffet restaurant or at either the[... read more] 24hr snack bar or the bar by front desk. It is my opinion that tips were preferred in Canadian or US currency. And saving yourself the hassle of currency exchange and the fees was a welcome treat.
There is no doubt that the food quality and variety has changed but I feel the hotel offered a good selection . There was always fresh fruit, cheese and bread. Usually the buffet had two different soups available at lunch and dinner. There are three grilling stations for fish, steak, pork or chicken and another for vegetables such as eggplant, green pepper, cucumbers etc. Typically, at lunch there was also a grilling station for vegetables and rice. Although we did not attempt to do this, I saw guests, request uncooked chicken from the other grill station and take it back to be cooked with the rice.
We preferred to go to the buffet breakfast to get fruit and bread and order eggs (fried, scrambled, omelet) at the 24hr snack bar. Table service was extremely quick and faster than the buffet line.
There is an option to book two a la carte restaurants during a one week stay (Italian, International, Cuban). We chose the Italian and the Cuban restaurant . Despite hotel printed information, there is no longer an extra fee to eat at the Cuban restaurant. And we throughly enjoyed our meal at the Cuban restaurant and would recommend it above the Italian.
There is also an option to reserve a table at a one of two a la carte lunch restaurants; a BBQ with burgers and the other one with Pizza. You can only book one lunch restaurant for a one week stay.
I have travelled to many all inclusive resorts over the last 30 years including Cuba, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic but this was the first time I felt an intense pressure to tip for any and all service. It became clear that if you didn’t immediately indicate you would be providing a tip, you would not receive service or it was quite slow. In my vacation oblivion, I hadn’t quite noticed the trend but by the second afternoon it was more than evident. Guests who literally waved money and shouted for a drink at the bar were served first before others in line. We waited 5 days to obtain a reservation for the lunch pizza restaurant. Our reservation was for 1:30 and we waited in line starting at 1:20pm. There were 4 other groups waiting for a table in line. One group asked a server if they could obtain a table without a reservation and were turned away. During this period of time, there were several empty tables and we continued to wait. We were advised there was a change of staff and we would be seated as soon as possible. While waiting, I watched a woman with two young boys, whistle and shout to get the attention of the cook. Once she shouted his name, she literally waved a $5 Canadian bill and asked him to enter the restaurant. At this time, three parties and ourselves, continued to wait in line to be seated at a table and all had reservations. This woman’s husband who had been standing on the the other side of the restaurant went under the rope surrounding the restaurant to join her. The family was provided 3 pizzas and two burgers. This was done before any of there waiting groups were seated and while those at tables were waiting to order and for their food to be prepared. I was utterly disgusted by the behaviour of this family and frankly for the staff to allow and encourage it. I surprised myself by confronting the husband about their behaviour who defended their behaviour by stating “The staff need the money; we did it to help them”. Despite this couple’s assertion, they didn’t provide money to staff as an altruistic gesture; they did it to help themselves; to skip the line and to be served first ahead of others who had legitimate reservations. We learned from the husband that they had been engaged in this behaviour for several days and “everyone did it”. I can certainly attest that the group who attempted to obtain a table without a reservation were not accommodated but can only assume if they had provided a small bill, they would have been, at the very least, a take out meal. And I am pretty convinced that this family would not have attempted to engage in this kind of behaviour at home in Canada.
The property was well taken care of and gardeners were present every day. Pools were spotless and the beach often had lifeguards to ensure the safety of swimmers.
