We stayed at the resort for 7 days and enjoyed the entertainment every night! From the shows to the discos we were super impressed! We stayed in the wooden bungalow which was beautiful! And enjoyed amazing food from morning to night! Not to mention the people were kind and so helpful! And the landscape and beach had the most gorgeous view you could ask for! Looking forward to booking again and enjoying even more fun in the sun in Cuba!
Much love from Canada,

Hotel Villa Cuba: Great atmosphere
The resort was clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was pretty good as well. I have been to Cuba a couple times and I am happy with my experience at this resort. Only downfall was only 1 main pool and not as much entertainment as other places.

Roc Barlovento: Amazing staff
The room we had was exactly as requested, ground floor with 2 beds. I must say it was adequate for our needs except for the bathroom. The bathtub was difficult to access as it was so high, the bottom of the tub was very slippery and there was no grab bar or anything to hold on to if you slipped. Also the spray shower head should be updated and the towels were very small. There was a lot of storage which was certainly appreciated.
That being said, I have to comment on the wonderful staff [... read more]there from the lobby bar, to the buffet (especially Iris), the wonderful girl responsible for the games and bingo, the bar and barbeque staff, the cleaning staff and the doctor I had to visit.
I felt safe and very welcome here and Roc Barlovento should be very proud of their hotel and staff.

I will be returning many more times. Great ; resort staff, safe property, excellent beach & pool.....plus fun nightly entertainment !!! Lots of variety in buffet which changes daily & amazing a la carte Italian resto. I'm low maintenance so it's a solid 4star for me. Red & white wine tho was not great but they redeem themselves in Italian resto.....

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: Gran Caribe Cayo Guillermo March 2019
Hotel
it is rather dated but the staff and the ambiance is really nice to relax and have a good time, I paid a steal for 4 days with mom and sister and we had low expectations from the start. The rooms are dated and TV has one channel, bed sheets were clean but not changed everyday, you have to take them off and put on the floor for them to change it.The pressure of the water in the bathroom was awesome no issues and the AC worked well.
Food
honestly, it was not that good but it's not lik[... read more]e they do not have all the ingredients to make it awesome but they juts need to season their food before grilling it. I would take the soy sauce from the buffet and give it to the cook to season my fish before grilling. I stayed away from chicken and beef as it is taken raw and out on the grill in front of you.I did not go to cuba or chose this hotel for the food but because it was very affordable and for the beach.
Excursions:
we did the sailboat and snorkeling and it was awesome!!!\
we also took the double Decker bus to the market but really it's the ride that is awesome but nothing exciting at the market that you cannot get at the store at the hotel or at the airport when flying out.
I would go back for the same price for sure with my husband bit not with my kids. Honestly if you get a great deal and go with low expectations you will have fun.

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: decide for yourself but...
We have been to Cuba before so we know what to expect. We tried to give this resort the benefit of the doubt. But you can decide for yourself:
Pros:
beautiful beach, cleanest of the strip. Great if you like wading – not for swimming though.
Missy does great braiding and Junior not only makes a great omelette, he actually can fry two eggs – lightly over – without breaking the yokes (must be a special skill in Cuba).
Missy, Junior, and most of the non-management staff were friendl[... read more]y and made you feel welcome.
Both pools looked clean
Cons:
we were eaten alive by mosquitoes – they seem to even like the insect repellent – we are Canadian we know mosquitoes – these were unbelievable and we were not the only ones with welts all over our bodies.
getting a table that had cutlery was touch and go and how cutlery and glass wear were cleaned is disgusting (you don't want to know what happens behind the screens)
I can handle cats coming and going when it's an open air buffet, but both buffets are closed, but the cats are allowed to wander in and out and all around. These are not pets, they are 'wild' and most likely have fleas etc...
we are certain the Cuban people eat better food than they served in the buffets
only one bartender to service the entire resort between 6:30ish and 8ish pm. This poor guy has to service EVERYONE – alcohol and coffee drinks – average wait in line 10 minutes.
We were never offered beach towels – good thing we brought our own
Shower head was at a fixed level of 8 feet so you have to take it down to use it and then any water that happened to hit the wall flooded the floor
tub wouldn't drain – not even over night
we had bugs in the tub when we arrived – more to follow on that.
The air conditioner poured out water and wasn't fixed until our second complaint
we had no housekeeping in our second room – the room they gave us due to the photos
TV's in both our first room and our second room had to be fixed
drapes in both rooms were old and torn and large gaps under the doors allow lizards free range
we had a VERY valid complaint about a flying insect infestation in our room on day 5 and had to fight to get a new room – we were given the impression they thought we were exaggerating and said it was because of a weather change - until we showed them the photos (unable to download them here). Still took over 2 hours to get the new room
The room new room was supposedly ocean front – well, after you walked though the kite school, it was.
Housekeeping in first room didn't happen until around 5pm – then not at all in second room.
Many of the staff work 16 to 18 hour days – everyday and it shows
my husband got a better exchange rate than I did despite the fact that I was next in line
Needless to say, we would NOT recommend this resort under any circumstances. We have written to Sunwing, Sercotel, and Iberostar to let the know of our experience. Waiting to see if either company replies

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: Very fun resort
I liked the feel of the resort. The little cottages make it a nice atmosphere There were some mosquitos but I managed them ok. (Off) the food was good always something to eat just not a lot of variety. Dinner plates were an issue never enough. If you asked for something you needed it was arranged. Beach was beautiful and not busy at my end of the resort near the adults only section. A very relaxing environment

Roc Barlovento: Excellent location!
This is our 2nd stay at Roc Barlavento and already planning to go back next year. This resort is the first one as you come onto the peninsula and is great for walking down town and to the markets. It is a small resort but has 3 pools, main dining area, lunch area with outdoor BBQ everyday and 2 a la carte restaurants. Food was great, service was excellent, our room was on the 3rd floor (top) and was clean and comfy. There is a beach bar and the resort is very close to the beach.

Roc Barlovento: Overpriced 3.5 Star
The grounds look good and were well organized. The staff were alright.
The rooms and decks were disappointing, small. No hot water or even no water at peek showering times.
First rooms they set us up with were disgusting and we had to fight to change it.
We paid for Roc Plus and really got nothing for it except a water bottle in room every day. Room save was an extra charge. Nothing supplied in room fridge.
3.5 star with a 5 star price

Hotel Villa Cuba: Quite the Experience
Where do I begin? Food is awful, staff has the tendancy to give attitude and be very rude. To the lengths of something as simple as asking for another napkin. Rained one night, got electricuted by turning on a light. Was refused drinks because we asked for too many at once. Towels and toilet paper were given but very limited. The beach wasn't a far walk and was beautiful. Best bartending was at the beach bar. Only place to be able to get a drink without getting attitude. Rooms were decently mode[... read more]rn, some things look a bit older than others but for the most part they were okay. Resort is deadsville absolutely nothing to do a certain moments. Resort has potential but can really use a whole facelift to bring it up to date as much as possible.

Club Kawama: Horrible resort
Rooms, beds, service, and food stuck. Beach is alright but that is the only redeeming factor. You couldn't pay me to go back. There are basic requirements I expect from a resort such as toilet paper in the bathrooms, functional toilets, functional sinks, easily accessible food, doors that have door handles and doors that you dont have to slam into with all your weight to get open. Unfortunately I was horribly disappointed. Waiting 30-60 minutes everytime I wanted to eat got old fast. Being treat[... read more]ed like a second class citizen because I didn't speak Spanish got old even faster. I thought tipping heavily would help but it did not. The service was horrible, with staff going out of their way not to help you. We talked to people who had been to this resort 5, 10, 20 times and I was shocked that someone would ever come back there. I couldn't lower my standards low enough. Just things like having toilet paper in the bathroom, such a simple thing, and inexpensive even in Cuba I imagine but they didn't have it. You had to stockpile it and carry it with you wherever you went, just in case. Super annoying. And when we would complain about to vacationers that had been there before they said thats Cuba, what are you going to do. Sorry but that's not cool in my book. Our toilet in our room didn't work, we told the front desk but nothing was done until our last day 20 minutes before we checked out. Our door couldn't be opened by our children because they couldn't push hard enough. Our bed was about appeared to 30 to 40 years old and within days I had back and hip pain. The wasn't good but it wasn't bad but I was ok with that as I had been to Cuba before and I was expecting that. What I wasn't expecting was a wait every where I went for food. This is the only vacation that I gone hungry on as I just didn't feel like waiting for food. And if you did wait and I Spanish person came they could cut the line and take the food that was being prepared for you and now you would have to wait longer. Super fustrating. I could complain about more stuff but if you have read this far you'll get the point.

This was one of my favorite trips to Varadero. The resort was lovely, our room was clean and close to everything and the service was outstanding. I really liked how close it was to downtown. Starfish Cayo Guillermo: The most terrible experience ever
The resort says they have in-room safe's, and a mini-bar fridge. Not true at all. I had to hid my passport, visas, monies, cellphone behind a headboard hoping they would not be discovered. As for camera and laptop I had to lock them in my suitcase hoping that wouldn't walk away. The patio door had simple bolt locks that if you were to kick the door in you could. I never felt safe. The resort was busy and the staff was limited. Very long waits at the buffet. So early mornings if you were about wa[... read more]lking you would see garbage's overfilled and litter everywhere, dirty tables from spilt drinks, dirty lobby. Overflowing public washroom was a recurring theme. Forget about your sheets being washed. As for the rooms they may have swept them and even mopped them but they were not disinfected. I got travellers diarrhea and I picked up a parasite which is extremely painful. I didnt stay my full two weeks.

Club Kawama: Another wonderful vacation!!!
This was around 15 times to Kawama and we have no plans to change Resorts. Kawama is an old Resort, one of the oldest and while it is showing its age in some areas you really can not beat the staff and the ambiance of this old beauty. The rooms are slowly getting renovated, the pool is beautiful again and the food gets better every time we go. There is and always will be a large group of Repeaters , we all return because we love it here.
Instead of complaining when you see something that needs[... read more] to be improved, kindly bring it to the Hotel's attention so that it can be addressed instead of giving bad reviews on Trip Advisor or Sunwing. Yes there are issues, shortage of toilet paper in bathrooms.....there are hundreds using the facilities every day so yes it runs out. Buffet food, yes sometimes it is not warm enough or they run out....again many people are eating there so naturally it will be hard to keep trays filled and hot.
It would also be so nice if people would pick up after themselves instead of leaving garbage laying around the pool or beach area, you would not litter your own property l hope. Also, when you are sitting having drinks or coffee in the bars, would it be too much to bring your glasses and drinks back to the bar so that the already overworked staff does not have to do. So many people make a mess and just walk away and leave it......come on people, show some respect. We are seeing so many of Kawama staff that are just exhausted from working so hard to make their guests happy, lets all try to be more compassionate to their feelings......
We can not wait to return to our beloved Kawama again and again......love our Cuban family and our home away from home.......

Club Kawama: Week at Kawama!
Cleanliness: This was one of the cleanest resorts I have stayed at. The furniture, appliances, and other items may have been old (as are most things in Cuba), but everything was clean. I have never seen a cleaner pool (I have stayed at 5 Star resorts where their pools were not always as clean and had garbage floating around them).
Staff: most of the staff were very helpful and kind. when they saw you they always smiled and greeted you. They did their best to accommodate our needs.
Food: my[... read more] mom really liked the food. There was a lot of fish, lobster, shrimp, etc. I on the other hand was not a super big fan. Some of the spices/seasonings they put on their meat did not agree with me. That being said, their rice, beans, bread, pizza, fruit, and desserts (especially the rice pudding!) were all great. This resort has one buffet, two restaurants, three bars, and a snack bar. As well, down the road there was a great pizza place.
Amenities: our room had a blow dryer that did not really work too well, a mini fridge that worked but then sometimes stopped working, a television with minimal channels, and a safe which cost 30 CUC to use (they set up your card for your room to unlock the safe). All of these issues we were pre-warned about in the reviews, so we were not the least bit upset.
There was towels (I recommend bringing your own pool/beach towels and wash cloths), toilet paper was provided, but it is still recommended to bring your own because lots of the restrooms do not have any.
The hotel itself did have a gym, pools, restaurants and a buffet, a coffee shop, bars, Wi-Fi for a fee and it only worked by the pool, there was a kid’s place. One thing I wish the hotel did have was a snack bar with more options (there was a snack bar but it had a limited menu and it took a while to get your food).
Location: the location of Kawama is great. The beach was a 30 second walk from our room. There was a place right down the road to exchange your money. After a 5 minute walk you can get to where the hop-on hop-off bus starts and further down is the town with markets and restaurants. When we rode the bus we found the ‘fancier’ hotels further down were quite far from the town itself.
Overall: I would for sure return to Club Kawama! It was not a five star resort, but the location was great, the staff were overall friendly, the price was fair, and it was clean as well as comfortable. I definitely would say this ‘3-star’ resort lived up to its ‘3-star’ status.
The only way it could possibly get higher, at least from me, would be if they increased their snack bar options and upgraded their appliances in the rooms as well as got new beds (note: bring your own pillow, I am sure glad we did because their pillows were not great). As well, I wish the pool was open later (it closed at 6pm!).

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: Enjoyable vacation
The beach, the water, and the staff were wonderful. They need to put some more money in the lodging rooms. Too many things that are not working. We reserved a wooden bungalow which was cute but the safe did not work, the bureau drawer were broken and the refrigerator was not working. Fortunately, we could change our room which was better. This could be a 4 star with a little more investment. The landscaping and flowers were beautiful.
Not enough choice for the food. Need more vegetables and[... read more] salads( lettuce)
With a little more Financial investment this could be an amazing hotel. Not sure we would come back.
