First off I forgot my purse in the bus that brought us to hotel from the airport. It was delivered back at the hotel within an hour with everything intact. Just awesome :) Flight, hotel, excursions and staff was excellent. We upgraded to privilege and it was worth every penny. I would definitely return to this hotel and would highly recommend it. for people who want the beach experience I would not send them here. But everything else was awesome. I enjoyed the privilege location for dinners the[... read more] most. The only thing that needs to improve would be the showers as the water goes everywhere there is no way of it to stay in the shower area. I also enjoyed the Hamilton airport as a departure and will definitely try to avoid Pearson at all costs.

Barcelo Maya Caribe: wouldn't book again
This resort is very big. It is 619 acres. Be prepared to do lots of walking. If you do choose to stay here, be sure to book 'Premium.' Even though this is a 5 star resort, the 'superior run of the house' rooms are extremely dated and need a thorough renovation. Our room was on the second floor and air conditioning worked well. Bathroom had peeling paint in the tub.
The food is excellent. We had read reviews about bland food and did not find that. The a la cartes are hard to book and we could[... read more] only get dinner times between 5 - 6 pm. I don't know if they did that as well as we had an 8 year old. Seems like all the kids were with parents at this dinner time.
The resort's entertainment around the pools and activities are lacking. There are 4 main pools and most of the action seemed to be happening at Tropical. That was 2 resorts away from us.
The shows are too late. All started at 9:30 pm. With a 8 year old we just couldn't make it to them. We have enjoyed other resorts where the entertainment is more geared towards children (having some children's shows). The Barcy club is too hard to access. They are too strict with drop off times and they only allow you to book in 50 minute increments.
The pools and beaches were great. Alcohol was very watered down.
The staff work very hard, especially the grounds crew. The resort exterior is immaculate.
Very commercial resort, too many stores. Miss quainter resorts with less shopping options. No one is selling you anything on the beach which is nice but you almost miss it too.
We used collectivo to explore, but be prepared to be in the middle of nowhere.

Sandos Caracol Nature Resort and Water Park: It has gone downhill since 2019
This was our second time there. The rooms need some upkeep. The AC in our room needed repairing twice, and the safe locked us out twice. The food at the buffets was repetitive. It was very chaotic to book reservations for the a la carte restaurants as they expected you to use the app, but had a kiosk with a person booking at the same time so you would book and then get cancelled. The beach is only rocks. However, the staff are wonderful, the entertainment fabulous, the activities varied and so m[... read more]any. The waterpark was a hit for the grandkids as was the kids club. Swimming in the cenote was refreshing. The rooms are clean and so are the pools.

Occidental at Xcaret Destination: Naturally Beautiful Resort!
We loved the natural jungle setting. Seeing monkeys everyday was a highlight! Bambi the deer, Coatis and Agoutis, Iguanas and Flamingos! Everyday had animal excitement. I would have liked to have seen the Flamingos in a better spot with more stimulation but they looked very healthy. There were also beautiful macaws by the lobby area. I felt bad that their wings were clipped, but then found out that they come over from Xcaret everyday. Xcaret has a successful Macaw breeding program where they are[... read more] helping to repopulate Macaws back into the wild. I was very happy to hear that! We absolutely loved the natural pool. Another highlight! The beach is small but it’s beautiful and very clean. It’s perfect for kids because it’s an inlet that’s sectioned off from the rest of the ocean. It’s also great if you are new to snorkelling. You can also snorkel by the natural pool but only on a calm day - check the warning flags. I went when the flag was yellow, and don’t go by yourself. It’s technically off the resort. We brought our own snorkel gear, I never figured out if they offered it. Best to bring your own.
My daughter and her friend had a lot of fun at the pools playing trivia and cornhole. They are 18, and also really enjoyed the nightlife.
Our room was nice, loved the balcony! That’s where we saw the most monkey action. AMAZING!! We were in building 18, 2nd floor. Our information hosts Ashley and Camilla were so kind and helpful. The cleaning staff was lovely.
Checkin was quite a slow process, but not a big deal. The lobby was beautiful to look at while we waited. All of the staff were friendly, fun and there to help. We had such a great experience! We bought the unlimited Xcaret passes, which I think was a good idea. We walked over to the park almost every day. The Aviary is outstanding. And the underground /cave river was really fun and relaxing.
The food was a mix of ok and good. You found what you liked and stuck with it. My daughter and I are vegetarian so we were limited to begin with. Fresh fruit was great. We liked the pasta bar. And again, the staff was lovely. It was an expensive vacation but when you get there and see your surroundings you understand why. A lot of work goes into this place. We had a really great trip!

Barcelo Maya Beach Resort: The resort was beautiful but the beach was not! Lots of sea weed and rocks. Very hard to walk any distance on the beach.
The room was satisfactory as far as sleeping but the maid service was iffy. We had an incident where the maid broke the coffee pot glass in the bath tub/shower and never even cleaned up the glass only got rid of the pot handle and ring. When I phoned the front desk to report this, they said sorry but that was it They never even sent anyone one to pick the glass out of the tub or off the floor and if I had not noticed the glass before getting into the shower, they could have had a problem wit[... read more]h someone could have had a very bad cut. We cleaned the glass up ourselves. The cleanliness was not up to my standards but realize we were in Mexico.
Some of the restaurants in the resorts were very nice and we really enjoyed them.

Barcelo Maya Tropical: Huge resort with lovely grounds
Best feature is the grounds and pool, Lots to do but really an all inclusive plus....lots of things were added costs. Kids pools were great and the one with the Pirate ship was nice as not as busy as it was 20 AM dollars each unless under 6 and over 60. No alcohol served there though. Buffet was better than the restaurants except for Japanese, it was fabulous and not to be missed. Rooms were okay but not as large as other resorts. Had garden view which was fabulous, quiet and lots of animals sho[... read more]wed up which delighted my grand daughter. The place is so big you spend a lot of time lost., they do not give any paper maps and the ones on their website and on line suck. Most people wander around asking others where everything is. Lots of staff do not speak enough English to help you out. Staff was great otherwise. Pool really lovely but be prepared to get your drinks at bar and there is no service at beach. Beach is beautiful with lots of palms but its rocky so bring water shoes. It was very rough for week we were there but still enjoyed the beach. Room was really clean when we got there but the cleaning after that was not great. No face cloths and bath mats were size of a cell phone! Had to call for more coffee, water and beer. We left a note for more beer and we got some so that was great. We booked 2 beds as there were 3 of us, but got one bed and no compensation or apology. My daughter and grand daughter swam with the dolphins and it was well organized with little wait time and good viewing. You can go into the area and just watch if you like. There are 2 large red double decker buses that go from one lobby to another and to the 2 malls in the place. No matter which way they go they will get you to your lobby and from there you walk to your actual 3 storey building. Each hotel on site has a different lobby and then their own buffet, kids pool and accommodations, restaurants and bar. Some you can go to no matter where you stay and others are exclusive....you could swim in the pool but they will not serve you in the bars or buffets. It really takes 2 or 3 days to figure out the place and you pretty much have to go to your lobby to find out what and when the shows are. The kids club was nice and each activity was about 40 minutes and you can leave the kids there and pick them back up.Shows were not till 930 so did not attend but kids shows were at 8.We took a private day trip thru Kay Tours to ruins, lunch and Cenote with Juri....highly recommend them and ask for Juri too. She was great.

Barcelo Maya Palace: Gorgeous Resort and perfect for families!
This was our second time going to this resort. Love the setting and location. Staff are friendly and beach/pools are gorgeous!! So much to do and see.
The buffet is too die for. Fresh food and selection for miles. Food is absolutely fantastic all around!!
This visit the housekeeping was terrible. Forgot to replace things in our room (mini-bar, towels, body wash, etc.) daily and forgot to clean or room three of the days we were there.
Entertainment was disappointing. Was hoping for my [... read more]kids to see a beautiful Mexican show with Mexican music, instruments, dancing and flamboyant costumes... but they had singers perform barely understandable renditions of Disney movie theme songs that were so boring that my kids asked to leave part way through.
Shuttle bus that is supposed to run every fifteen minutes often takes over an hour and made us very late for one of our reservations (feet were too sore by then to run).
Don't scrimp on packing your sunscreen. We ran out and it cost us about $100 CAD to purchase one cream and one spray (and two bags of chips) from the resort store.
We were disappointed that they didn't recognize us as repeat customers. Other resorts always have... with an upgrade or a little token/note in the room.
We will book elsewhere next time due to this and because of the housekeeping and poor entertainment.

Iberostar Waves Paraiso del Mar: Just Ok trip
We liked location , greenery , wild animals . We did Not appreciate that we were served with instant coffee and powder milk . Also , we not like an extra charge (1$ per day ) for sanitization. Other chains don’t charge extra . Fyi . It took us over 2 hrs to get from Cancun to Iberostar as they put us on a shared bus which stopped at 4 resorts dropping off 2 or more people and we were at the last place . It was very disappointing after 4.5 hr flight .

Breathless Riviera Cancun: Beautiful resort.
Breathless Riviera Cancun is a beautiful resort. Rooms are spectacular. Beds are comfortable. Shower is spectacular, pictures do not do it justice.
Buffet food was always hot and plentiful. I would have preferred that the Mexican restaurant serve real Mexican food, otherwise they were all very good. The pool was very nice and warm, get a chair early because it fills up fast.
I have two complaints. This one is fixable... They tell you when you arrive at the front desk, this is a party resort..[... read more]. OK... North pool has party music from 1pm to 6pm, the south pool is quieter. Not true... Thump thump music all day. Day 5 they put on regular rock and country music, the entire pool cheered and applauded! The supervisor told the entertainment guy to put it back to Thump Thump, the crowd BOOO'ed READ THE CROWD! Thump thump music is ok but keep it to the right crowd at the right time. Eating dinner is not the right crowd either! Everyone we talked to felt the same way.
Second complaint is not fixable, nature prevails... the beach was covered with seaweed, it kept us away from the beach, seaweed smells when in direct sun.
I give the resort 5 gold stars, I would have given it 4 Diamonds if the music was more of what their clients wanted.

Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa: More of a hotel with pools
Was not impressed with this hotel. Too small for my liking. The rooms are getting run down needs to be updated. The food is okay if you can get into a restaurant. You can get into any restaurant if you pay for a bottle of wine or $150 US. Not enough loungers around the pool for their guests. So many birds

Iberostar Selection Paraiso Lindo: We would go again, absolutely!
Everything was great! The customer service was amazing, all the workers are incredibly kind, friendly and helpful. The check in process was seamless, even when there was a issue with our reservation (got a free upgrade to Maya from Lindo!). The restaurants were very good but the buffet was just as good. Highlights were El Rancho, La Geisha and El Tapotio. We did book restaurants right away and we worked around the times available. The pool is beautiful, the beach is amazing and the rooms were sp[... read more]acious. Maya rooms are bigger than Lindo but that is really the only difference other than access to a few more restaurants. Overall a great holiday! Would recommend for families with teenagers and families with young kids. My teens had a blast!

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun: Nice resort
The resort food was really good and the staff are working hard to please everyone. The entertainment staff were very friendly and outgoing. Our teen enjoyed playing Bingo, volleyball and hubby enjoyed playing water blackjack. Yes, there is seaweed and unfortunately the area is known for it. We still went in the ocean. Our teen loved the water park, gym and pools. We enjoyed the lazy rivers. We got an ocean front jacuzzi, diamond club room. Because it was March break, it was handy to have b[... read more]utlers make our reservations for dinners, otherwise, I don’t see a need for it. The rooms were really clean, but I do hope they fix the slamming of the doors. You are not really near anything, so if you are looking for shopping or seeing the sites, this is not the place for you. Lots of kids slipping on the pool area, while running around, so be aware of that. Our teen was not racing around and wore flip flops and was fine.

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun: Great resort, but beware of getting sick
The resort overall was fantastic the first few days. There is lot’s to do for the kids - splash park for the younger ones, lazy river, big slides, trampoline$, bowling$, laser tag$ , etc. The food is amazing! The restaurants have delicious food. Zen was our favourite. The beach is not particularly swimmable as there is a lot of sargassum but we enjoyed being in there anyhow. The pools have a lot going on and are super fun. The gelato ice cream was our go to treat daily. The cafe had the best l[... read more]atte’s. The service was amazing - staff always smiling and very kind. Our room was cleaned daily.
The shows in the evening are fantastic! This resort is very family oriented - I do not suggest couples go here.
People are also getting up extremely early to ‘reserve’ pool loungers (around 5:00-6:00am) and they are all ‘reserved’ by 7:00am. That wasn’t a big deal for us as we were always on the go - however - it was extremely difficult to find a lounger by the pool. When we did want one - we couldn’t easily find one as they’re all ‘reserved’. Most people would not show up for hours - if at all. We would usually go sit at the beach as there are more empty loungers there.
Also, many people got sick with what everyone believes is the norovirus. The hotel needs to do a deep clean. The sickness was horrible and went through our family one by one, and for this particular reason ruined our amazing trip. We have seen many reviews on other sites where people were getting sick (prior to our arrival) and it seems to be spreading fast now. There needs to be hand sanitizing in the buffet and restaurants. We witnessed a few people getting sick in front of our eyes. Something has to be done as almost everyone there has had it or knows someone who had it! We have been home for a couple days and still recovering. Royalton , do better - people are getting sick left, right and centre! Because of this reason I would NOT recommend anyone to go until this is under control. For this reason I am giving the hotel a 3 star .

Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya: Not the same as it use to be :(
This was our fifth time at Grand Sirenis (not that anyone cared). We noticed a lot of differences that were unfortunately not positive. Check in is always a pain -takes a while and they always try to put you in the older suites first (we know not to stay in those from past experience). It’s always a lot of asking to be put in a building we know is better than the others (even though they are all the same cost). The ‘big show’ and kids mini disco (which didn’t happen every night any more)[... read more] were way lower quality than what they have ever been - a lot of lip synching and repetitive dancing. They show an advertisement for the resort on loop for like an hour before, which didn’t happen last year and was boring. There were no Covid protocols but I didn’t expect there to be. This year we would have breakfast by the pool and would not even be acknowledged by a staff member, where last year we would be offered coffee. Numerous times we had to search to get our own cutlery and could often not find plates at the buffet, no matter if we changed the times we went. The staff seemed not very happy, which I understand to a degree (dealing with rude privileged white people has to be annoying) but this was more than that. The grounds weren’t as clean as they use to be, we saw a squished ketchup packet sit in a main walking path for days, floors were dirty ore than they were clean. The bathrooms throughout the resort were always smelly and disgusting, especially by the pools. Perhaps it was just hard to keep up with guests that acted like feral animals (people are gross), but it was a notable difference from past visits. It was just disappointing this time around. It’s the first time we ever skipped a ‘big show’ and the first time we ever talked about not returning and trying somewhere else. I will say, the staff cleaning the seaweed worked their butts off and did a great job. The weather was great.

Grand Sunset Princess: A much needed reset
I recently took my two oldest and myself to the grand sunset princess. We stayed from March 9th-17th. The resort was beautiful, the grounds were gorgeous and there was a lot to see in regards to wildlife. We saw monkeys, a crocodile, a deer and local animals as well. The food was great, something for everyone although it was very difficult to book the a la carts, and when we were able the earliest time was after 8pm which is a bit late with two young kids who have played in the sun all day. B[... read more]ut we utilized the buffets and the sports bar which had some great snacks, sandwiches and entertainment.
The chill out snack buffet was our favorite for breakfast, as we arrived nice and early before it was crowded. The staff at that buffet were lovely and it was considerably smaller than the two at the main resort lobby area. We loved it.
The pools were great, although guests saving chairs the night before and well before dawn got a bit frustrating as having small children, shade is necessary in the intense heat. We made it work, and found shaded spots when needed.
I was warned about the seaweed and it was exactly what I've read from others. Awful. The water was mucky, the seaweed went out at least 30 feet and it was next to impossible for the staff to keep a section cleared. But we did still enjoy a few trips down to the ocean.
A special shout out to Maria Gordillo in the sports bar who works her tail off while always smiling, thank you for everything!
Thank you Jennifer, for helping us book this much needed trip. Our family needed this on so many levels and it's filled our hearts with joy and memories.
