Melia Cayo Santa Maria: Quiet and relaxing
This resort was very small quaint easy to get around not a lot of walking to go anywhere
The food was good, rooms were clean and decent. It close to the beach the ocean was nice
The people were great. But the only downfall for this resort was the two-hour bus ride from the airport other than that I would go back in a heartbeat!

Melia Jardines del Rey: Decent resort for the cost
Nice property. Spacious. Beach was wonderful. Large clean pools. Room was good - hot water Firm bed and good A/c Food was ok -as expected in Cuba. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food needs to be labelled better. No shrimp available on resort for entire week. One desk person a bit obsessed with towel return upon our checkout - we left them in our room as instructed - but she made us run back and get them- made to feel like we were stealing 2 towels?? Paradisus Rio De Oro: Best resort in Cuba
The first thing we noted was that we were one of only a handful of people we met that were here for the first time. Ninety-five percent of the customers had been here before, most 3 or 4 times and one couple was here 24 times. That says something.
This is our fourth trip to Cuba. Cuba has great people, is a beautiful island and has great beaches. The one common complaint you hear about Cuba is the food. This hotel has the best food we have experienced in Cuba. The seafood is very good.[... read more] The salmon steak at the Japanese restaurant was excellent. The main buffet was so good in fact that we cancelled our reservation at one of the a la carte restaurants that was "indoor" so we could eat outdoor. The food variety changed daily with things like roast beef, turkey breast, BBQ pig etc and then there were the constant like the pasta bar, and the main grill where you could order chicken, beef, pork, lobster, shrimp, mahi mahi etc. There are other resorts on other islands that can still top the food here but this is the best we have experience in Cuba and it is only a small step behind some other higher end resorts that cost a lot more money too.
The rooms are very large and clean. The shower area had to be recently renovated and was beautiful. The whole resort was excellently maintained. Really good restaurant right on the beach. Good snorkelling and you can go sailing or windsailing.
The staff are great. They works as a team amongst themselves and the rapport between the staff and customers is very warm and friendly.
We will be going back here without question.

Melia Las Dunas: Large,Mediocre Resort
Be prepared for a long bus ride from airport to resort.Shuttle service from lobby to room very poor.Customer service and communicating with the staff can be a source of frustration. Our room service was good.Nice beach and pool.Unless you get up early you will have a hard time finding a chair at the beach or pool. By the end of our stay when the resort became less busy chairs were easier to find.Problem stems from people hogging the chairs and then not use them for hours at a time.Resort should p[... read more]ass some kind of policy to prevent this from happening or supply more chairs.Food at buffet not bad by Cuban standards.Food at snack bars not the best although meat prepared at barbecue wasn't bad.Pretty well same food every day.Never tried the other restaurants.Mixed drink quality at the bars very inconsistent.Constantly running out of toilet paper in public restrooms.Resort in pretty good shape. The rooms are another story.Very dated.Could use major renovations.Example:old worn out mattresses, recommend you do not flush toilet paper down toilet(gross),terrible mildew smell in some of the ground floor rooms(We went through three ground floor rooms before settling on a second floor room).Never checked out late night entertainment so can't comment on that.Like many of the resorts in Cuba don't expect a top quality experience.Price dictates what your expectations should be.We have been to Cuban resorts many times over the course of the last few decades. This is probably our last, unless things improve.

Memories Cayo Largo: SOL Cayo Largo SUPERB VACATION
My wife and I spent two weeks at Sol Cayo Largo, Cuba in March 2019 and it was truly the best vacation we have experienced, in terms of beaches, cuisine, accommodations and friendly staff.
The powdery, soft sand allowed us to walk on the beaches endlessly, since the sand doesn't burn your feet. The swimming was terrific in all areas of the beach, including the beaches at neighbouring resorts.
The nude sections of the beaches were very good with ample lounges and shade. The guests were pol[... read more]ite at all times which lead to enjoyable hours of soaking up the sun, relaxing, reading or napping.
By and large, fellow guests were very friendly with numerous ethnic languages spoken, yet the majority of guests were able to converse in English.
The grounds SOL were beautiful, with abundant shade if you wanted it, a huge pool that wasn't crowded and ample lounges to relax on. Daily towel exchange was terrific and the towels were large and new.
The Housekeeping staff were efficient and friendly and nothing was too difficult for them to tend to. Money exchange was a breeze at the front desk and if you want a taxi or bus to a beach or to the Marina, the wait was very short and the cost was very reasonable.
We rented an ATV for the entire day and travelled to Paraiso Beach, the Marina and nearby resorts. The wide, sand road to the beach areas was a great ATV ride and traffic was minimal. Rental rates were very reasonable. There was a bit of a wait at the rental desk, but worth the wait!
The buffet style breakfasts and dinners in Las Dunas were more than anticipated, with great variety and very service-oriented staff who always smiled and did their very best to enhance your visit.
We will be back annually to SOL Cayo Largo for another restful and rejuvenating vacation!

Melia Las Dunas: Fine
The grounds are large and lovely. The food was the same as the last 2 times I have been to Cuba, so so. The beach and water was beautiful, other then having been stung badly by a jellyfish. The staff were ok....maybe just a difference in culture. I'm Canadian and expect people to be friendly but obviously that's not always the case. Rooms were nice and clean, beds pretty comfortable.

Paradisus Varadero: The good and the bad
We stayed here 6 years ago and were excited to return. The beach is amazing with no one selling products on the beach and it is in a lovely cove. The views, the water and the beach were stunning. Our room was clean and we were taken care of daily by a lovely lady. Staff was great for the most part with the exception of a few who were pushy for tips even though we always tipped. Some even asked for items. We had a few favorite waitresses who were so friendly but not intrusive or pushy. The food wa[... read more]s terrible when we arrived but we noticed each day there were improvements, such as cold meats on ice, nicer displays, carvings, more choices, variety, table clothes. At times it appeared a new manager had stepped in mid week. We heard someone had spoken to someone from the Melia Group! There were 5 a la carts in the info but only 3 were open the entire week. The facility was showing neglect with big and small things that needed attention. We found out on day 5 they are closing for renovations in May, however still having guests they should not just let things go.
We enjoy Cuba however this resort is not what it was!

Tryp Cayo Coco: Friendly staff, good buffet, average facilities
Tryp has all the basics you would expect at a Cuban hotel. Based on other reviews, I thought it would be a step up, but not really the case. Go with your expectations set that this will be like the standard Cuban hotel. First time I was there so I can't compare, but based on conversations with other travellers, it was hit hard by the hurricane. They have rebuilt the entrance, dining room area and it is serviceable but nothing fancy (apparently beautiful before). Their disco isn't open so th[... read more]ey use the snack bar. They lost a beach restaurant and pizza snack bar and these are still not rebuilt. Travellers seem to be avoiding this hotel so it was half empty, a la cartes were closed/on rotation, sections of the dining room not open. The good news is line ups for made to order food (fried rice, pasta, fish, etc) in the buffet are short (ala carte meals were very weak). Able to get clean towels, lounger by the pool etc. The beach is beautiful, one of the best I have seen in Cuba (vs Santiago, Santa Lucia, Veredero, Holguin). Staff are some of the friendliest I have met - William, Eduardo, Damien. I found the food to be better than other Cuban hotels, with a lot of choice. Recommend taking a Classic Car into Moron - Abel Salazar was our driver and he was fantastic. Not sure I will return to Cayo Coco because it is meant for a lazy beach vacation, and I like to see local villages by biking/walking which isn't available there. The locals are separated by the Causeway and a toll, so you are mostly stuck on the resort strip with limited interaction.

Sol Palmeras: Amazing Beach and Staff
Overall we enjoyed this all inclusive resort. It was our first time booking the Sol Palmeras and will probably return. The beach was gorgeous. The staff were very friendly and for the most part, could speak very good English. Our bungalow room was always very clean and quiet. Would highly recommend booking a bungalow however you'll want to request to be placed in a building close to the hotel and beach which would be zones 1 and 2. If you love to walk, you'll be OK in zones 3, 4 and 5. We were i[... read more]n zone 2 in room 234 which we found to be a good distance from the noise at the hotel and close to our beach path. From our deck/room, we could see a little bit of the water over the top of the dunes. There weren't enough beach loungers or palapas (sun shade). Management seriously needs to supply more of both as people would invade saved palapas all the time which was intrusive and cause a few spats between guests. The majority of the palapas were closer to the hotel section. When you see pictures of the beach that have 3 to 4 palapas deep, those are near the hotel paths and are within the noisy area where the entertainment staff are playing games and playing loud music most of the day. If you want a quieter beach day, you'll have to walk towards the left hand side of the beach which would be nearer to the bungalow rooms. Due to the lack of loungers and shade, we had to set our alarm every morning for 6:00am....yes, we had to get up at STUPID O'CLOCK on our vacation!!! This was the only way to ensure that we had shade. We did a lot of walking which burned off most of our food and beverages...not a bad thing. The food at the El Morino was decent. I would recommend the grilled or Kentucky Fried Chicken which comes with fries and/or cabbage salad. If you're ordering a hamburger and don't want any raw meat in the center, order it well done. Our favorite server was Javier. He typically worked the right hand side of the outdoor restaurant and always wore a white dress shirt. Perhaps he was a supervisor? He was always pleasant and quick to serve us. Please tip your servers if you've received good service. There was a daily BBQ of chicken, ribs and sausage with sides near the El Morino. We ate from the BBQ our first day and that was it. We found the food to be dry and hard to chew. The buffet is repetitive just like it is at most all inclusives in Cuba or Mexico. The lobby has 3 bars. The small bar La Plaza which is just off of the main bar near the Italian restaurant has the BEST Mojitos and the BEST bartender we've ever had. Her name is Caridad and she's known as "Chico Mojito". The bartenders don't cheap out on the alcohol. Some reviews say that they water down their drinks however my husband and I can attest to the fact that they don't. The red wine isn't anything to write home about, however, we preferred the brand Palacio De Anglona which is from Spain. Guests can purchase their own wine, alcohol or cigars from a booth setup between the disco and the buffet on the main lobby level. The lobby can get very loud in the evenings which is typical with such a large open space. We were very disappointed that we were only given two cans of Cristal (beer) in our room fridge on our first day. This was our 9th time booking a Melia resort in Cuba and the first time we've been told that an all inclusive doesn't restock Cristal throughout your stay. For the price we paid (two weeks), we should have had two cans every day or at least another two cans when we started our 2nd week. We don't know if this was the resort's choice or did Melia cut back on these little perks. They also no longer provide body moisturizer which Melia has always provided in the past. There didn't seem to be any limit to the amount of a la cartes you could book however you had to book 2 days in advance. The a la carte reservation desk is between the main reception and the main bar along the same wall as the main bar. I think the a la carte desk was open from 7:30 to 3:30. Our favorite was the International which is the El Morino restaurant by day. The Oshin is the Chinese restaurant which is located in the bungalow area. We went twice. The food is tasty but very salty due to the amount of soy sauce that they cook the food in. The quality of the red wine served in the a la cartes is better than in the bars. There's a gift shop which seemed to have reasonable prices and a little food/alcohol store. They also have a few post card vendors. It was only .75 to mail ourselves a post card from Cuba to Canada. There's a train (motorized vehicle) that leaves for the Plaza America mall every hour on the hour. They pick you up on the hour every hour. If you don't want to wait the entire time, head towards the statue of the chef near the restaurant and take the stairs down. Head to the beach entrance and walk to the right. You'll need to walk through the Melia Varadero resort and then you'll be on the Sol Palmeras beach. The walk from the mall to the Sol was approx. 5 mins. There's a grocery store on the main level of the mall which has alcohol and general items. We were impressed that there were so many up to date clothing stores. Pack a light sweatshirt as we had a cold front for a few days and were grateful to have warmer clothes with us. When the wind is calm, there are plenty of pelicans as they follow the local fishermen. At one point, there were 25 pelicans on the shore and in the water. Made for really nice pictures. We can't comment on the pools as we always stayed at the beach.

Melia Las Dunas: Beautiful beach, good hotel
Melia Las Dunas is probably among the better *all inclusives* in Cuba and certainly Cayo Santa Maria. The hotel and grounds are fine, of course there are rooms that are run down but also rooms that are looking quite well. Probably still not 5* but nice and comfortable. Grounds are kept quite nice.
If you haven't been, the beach in Cayo Santa Maria is gorgeous. Shallow entry for kids, white sands, turquoise water...gorgeous.
The food was okay. I didn't see anyone NOT eating, and I believ[... read more]e almost anyone could find reasonable choices for meals. At every meal there was always fresh cut vegetables and fruits which was important to me.
SERVICE in restaurants is where there's serious room for improvement. It's really not okay, even in Cuba, to keep waiting 20 min for cutlery for at your table despite asking your waiter repeatedly to bring it or point you to a source wherw to get it, so you can feed your child. It was a common occurrence to be among people desperately trying to find a plate. Even though the food manager did frequent the restaurants, it was not enough. I don't know if it's more staff they need or just more attentivness to guests but it was truly at almost every meal that we had to wait and wait for the service. I know it's not an easy job but unfortunately it does NOT make for plesant experience if you're being ignored at your table.
The whole system from the check in to food services seems very disorganized. Service at reception was helpful though.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Disappointed
Honestly not sure where to start! Starts with a beautiful beach, loved the beach, sun and sand. As for the hotel I'm disappointed in cleanliness and the staff willing to help with anything. There was only one bartender that was actually helpful with poring drinks. Limited staff, definitely short staffed and slow. Unfortunate that the staff wasn't trained up to any other country standards. I would have been bored if the weather wasn't so amazing. Limited day time activities. An[... read more]d nightlife was almost none existant. But overall I had a good time meeting people and swimming.

Melia Las Americas: Wonderful........yet again.
We had a wonderful trip from beginning to end. The resort is lovely, this is our 5 th time and it continues to shine. The beach is spectacular, rooms are being renovated and we had an older one one the first floor of the main building, some noise from below that woke us daily which was somewhat annoying but the room was clean and well appointed. The restaurants were fabulous! The bars were great and there is entertainment around every corner. The people are freiendly, helpful and talented.

Melia Cayo Coco: Paradise beach and Older Clean Resort
Overall the experience was a seamless experience from the bus ride to the hotel from the airport to the last day. Food a plenty (maybe too much!!!) fresh, variety and good quality (perhaps a bit more flavor). Sun drenched days by the pool (don't forget to use the clean sauna and masseuse Jose!) followed by evening sunsets by the beach.
The value of the beach/water and the food was enough for me. Yoga in the morning a great way to begin your day - the instructors from the animator team were f[... read more]abulous and informed!
The activity programming included tennis, archery, dancing, spanish lessons, volleyball and yoga.
If you are looking for a recharge especially in the winter months of canadian tundra. This is it. Moron is a mini-havana and worth a trip to visit. Yummy restaurants too.
