Great place with flaws.
Patio bar ran out of wine on three different nights and the food at the buffet under the heat lamps was lukewarm at best.
Other than that a beautiful resort.
Golf course was in excellent condition but could use a few more beverage carts due to the heat… Amen

Melia Las Dunas: Nice Resort
The resort is nice with clean pools and an amazing beach. The food was okay. It was very busy may be because of March break and that could be a reason that in the buffet area, they would run out of plates for which we had to wait a bit. In the snack bar as well, most of the items which were on the menu were not available. The waiters were grumpy and irritated maybe because of the busyness but we found that attitude very unusual especially among Cuban people. We could only book two a-la-carts (ag[... read more]ain, because of lack of availability) - Cuban and oriental, which were very nice.
Overall, we were satisfied as we were not too picky. Might go back again but not during March break.

Hotel Vigia: Beautiful beach and ocean
My hubby and I flew from Hamilton on Air Transat on 24th Feb and stayed at SCG for 2 weeks. We flew out in very strong winds so the plane had to be lightened which meant leaving behind 28 suitcases. Fortunately for us our cases arrived with us and the others were to be sent on the next day.
Our room 919 on the second floor was kept clean daily by our maid whose name I forget. She made sure we had clean towels every day and sheets were changed when needed. We had lots of hot water and a comfy[... read more] king size bed. Our room was close to everything but care had to taken when going up the stairs as a lot of bars on the railing was missing. This resort needs many renovations and I read that it will close in May to do some of them.
Food was good for Cuba and we enjoyed chicken, fish and pork cooked at the stations and really enjoyed the smoked salmon and shrimp, Cuban ice cream is the best, so delicious. We ate in the Mediterranean, Cuban and Italian al a carte's and found the food to be very good.
The Lobby bar and Theatre bar had great cappuccinos and espressos and the staff were fast and friendly. All the staff at this resort always had a smile on their faces. We found Reception staff to be fast, efficient and pleasant and as we arrived late, they informed us that the snack bar had stayed open for us and to go eat and then they would find someone to take our luggage up to our room...which they did.
Our friends joined us for our second week but they were not as fortunate as we were. The room they were given was at the very far end of the resort, a long walk, along a dark path. As we are all seniors this was not a good situation for them. They were told they would be moved the next day. That did not happen as the resort was full. It took 2 days to get a room closer to everything and then they had to wait until 5p.m. because reception or it may have been Customer Service allowed the present occupants to pay 10 pesos an hour to stay in the until 3p.m. Needless to say our friends were very upset. Once in the room they were happy for 2 days and then hot water for first shower and cold for second shower. Next day no water at all. They were offered another room but of course who wants to keep moving.
This was an 80th birthday vacation for our friends so I tried to arrange a surprise dinner at the Mediterranean restaurant for the Mon. or Tues. through Customer Service. They told me a cake would be ordered and champagne. After much back and forth to Customer Service, we finally got a reservation but no cake. Apparently they took so long to arrange it that the cake was not fit to eat. I told my friend the story and we all had a laugh..Surprise.. no cake...lol
All in all for my husband and myself it was a good holiday, nice memories with our friends. A good holiday for our friends but a bad taste in the mouth regarding the rooms. This resort will not be a repeat place for us all to go but I think a good place for families as the children seemed to have a good time and the lady who did child care was lovely.

Melia Cayo Santa Maria: Resort is a big dissapointment...
ONLY really good thing is a room, above expectations! Grounds are also fine. Food is also good, especially the existence of the 24HRS Snack Bar with a rich many. Central Bar near entrance is the only one well stuffed with quality international drinks, including REAL Scotch & Vodka ETC. Contrary to that, AQUA (swim up) Bar is pathetic, and with lousy bartenders. All other servers were OK. Distance between the POOL & Beach is waaaay to looong for my taste. Beach itself is rather dull - without one [... read more]Palm. WORST thing of all - DISCO club is outside and that NOISE spoils the best bar till midnight !!! :-( Speaking of the Music - NO LIVE Cuban Acoustic Band to be seen !!!

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: A GREAT GETAWAY!
There were many parts of the hotel that were outstanding - the staff, drinks on the beach, great room with a view of the ocean, piano bar, room service meals, the Sakura restaurant and the racquet coffee bar.
A few hiccups at the resort were the Rock House restaurant - one of the worst meals we ever experienced at a resort. Our other disappointment was not having any hot water for 4 days in our room.
We would come back to the resort for sure, with hopes they can fix the hot water!

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Excellent resort!
The grounds are beautiful and very clean. The hotel staff are friendly and always willing to lend a hand and help out.
The room was spacious, clean and the air conditioning worked very well.
The piano bar was a big hit with our group of four! We sang along to tunes from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s two nights during the week.
The beach is absolutely breathtaking and the water is clear blue and safe.
The beach bar is fantastic and the drinks are always flowing.

Hotel Vigia: Will not return to this resort
This hotel has the nicest beach area and the grounds are lovely and well taken care off, the Cuban staff are so very helpful and nice, but the management have a lot to learn about tourist,
We just came back two weeks ago from S.C. G. and had quite a few problems there that took two days to put us into a room that was a long walk to the restaurants etc. we are an elderly couple with walking problems, the first room was not suitable for us, we had already booked a room closer to the restau[... read more]rant area, but had to keep checking at the desk for help, the second room was much better and closer but alas, no hot water.
WE were a party of four, and all of us have been to Cuba and Cayo Coco many times, but will not return to this resort until the management has been changed.

Melia Peninsula Varadero: Not the 4 Star it once was
As a seasoned traveller and former travel agent, I went to Cuba with lowered expectations about the accommodations and food. The resort location and grounds are great and of course Varadero Beach is spectacular. The set up of the room and the condition of it was disappointing. For example: they supplied a coffee maker in the room but no coffee, and they did not sell the coffee for it on the resort. They left instant decaf packets that you could use if you boiled the kettle, but the plug in was w[... read more]ay across the room from the table all was sitting on. The drying rack on the balcony was not attached to the wall and came down the 1st day, and the handle to the sliding door into the bathroom broke on the 3rd day. We were in a junior suite and it seemed as though the hotel wanted to portray that they offered everything, but these amenities were clearly just “for showâ€. Beds were very uncomfortable. Not sure if this is common to other properties in Varadero, but I fear that if they don’t address the repairs and upgrades of the resorts on the island, they may lose market share to the Dominican Republic and other tropical destinations.
On the food, we were cutting them lots of slack as we thought the shortages of food and lack of fruit was due to the hurricane last year, but after talking with many other travellers (some from 3 star resorts) they did not share this experience at all. It was puzzling. I would only recommend to someone, if at a discounted rate and disclosing the likely condition of the rooms.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Great lobby, entertainment, beach however,.....
There are many positives and some things that are just 'typically Cuba' and you need to accept and not let it wreck your holiday.
Positives: As always, beach and turquoise water is the best. Lots of lounge chairs at pool and beach. Very nice pool areas too. Beautiful main lobby building which is important as that is your evening. Good entertainment in lobby before the 'big show'. Super talented!! We went to 4 a la cart restaurants. Recommend the salmon at the Italian and steak at the Inter[... read more]national. We all loved the Mexican. It makes a nice break from the buffet but sometimes we'd go there after our reservation to top up on dessert. Loved their desserts and fresh baked breads. Good omelette stations too.
Negatives: Surprisingly small buffet for a large resort. We found the food salty but could always find something to eat. Some washrooms either don't have toilet paper, toilet seat or a working door. Be selective and be prepared with your pack of tissues. Not a big deal. It always made the trip interesting. As this is a newer resort, the vegetation, palm trees are not as mature and fulsome. We love the tropical grounds so this was somewhat disappointing but did not make or break our holiday. We did not get a new bottle of water in our room for 3 days despite calls and visits to customer service. A little frustrating! We did bring our on reusable water bottles and got them filled at the bars and restaurants. Would recommend doing that.

Paradisus Varadero: Disappointing
Rooms were not well kept. No rooms have 4 beds so families of 4 have to pair up. Most rooms had two twin beds and a pull out sofa that sits on the floor. Our family of 4 was given three single beds. We moved rooms after the first night and that room had no hot water for three days. Mini bar was not filled daily and when room service was called, nothing was brought for three days straight. Service was very slow, and took at least 15 minutes to get a drink at any bar. No times available for restau[... read more]rants and they turned off the hand dryers in the bathrooms, so they could hand you paper towels for tips at night in the main lobby. The whole resort was way understaffed. Been to Cuba many times and this was very disappointing. Melia needs to invest some money back into this resort badly

Melia Varadero: Great beach, Nice Resort
The hotel is nice. The ‘level’ rooms on 5th floor are updated and clean. There is a great lounge on the level too with 24 hr drinks and food at meal times. The pools are decent- no swim up bar. The beach is gorgeous but not accessible unless you can handle stairs.
Buffet and al a cartes are very basic and repetitive daily. Buffet seating needs to be cleared more often. Decent wine needs to be purchased. Wifi even when purchased additionally on the level, is spotty& drops frequently . A lon[... read more]g user name and password are required every time you want to use and can only be used in lobby or on the level. Staff are friendly and thankful for tips. Overall-I would not recommend this hotel because of the wifi and food issues.

Melia Las Dunas: My honest opinion
The resort was nice the set up was nice there is a kids side and an adult side which is where we were put even tho we were booking with a child which I found odd. I went on the Monday to book out al la carts and was told they were booked until Friday which was the day we left but someone traveling at the same time as us who was in the information session managed to get them every day they were at the resort. Most staff were very nice but they were enough that stood out as rude makes us never wan[... read more]t to go back. Went to get wifi and the lady was on her phone which is not a big deal but we really rude and made me and my daughter feel as tho we were wasting her time by wanting access to the wifi for an hour, we went for supper one night and sat at our table and the waitress cleaned two tables off on each side of us filled water for everyone but our table we didn’t even get a first glass until we went to another server and asked for water and even still it wasn’t filled by our server. There were so many little faults on rude staff that even tho the resort is nice we will look at different resorts for any future vacations to Cuba.

Melia Las Antillas: First trip ever!!!!
The people are all so friendly, you just want to take them back home with you to keep them in your life forever. There was a large variety of buffet foods, sometimes not sure what they were but I found the food flavourful. Their bread and cappuccino are very good. We also liked the health bar. Pina colada drink was very good. Our room was clean. No bugs when we visited (March break) The nightly entertainment was very good. Never made it to the disco as we were so exhausted by 11pm. Melia Las Americas: Not as good experience as last year
1. They have a Level Club now which you pay more to get a different coloured hotel bracelet that we did not know about.
2. We were only able to book 3 ala carts instead of 4 restaurants this year.
3. The buffet choices and quality did not change much and we noticed how it wasn't as good and examples like smoked salmon was not replenished once it was gone.
4. They didn't have real orange juice with pulp like last year, it was a powder orange drink.
5. The service was extremely slow a[... read more]nd most of the time different offer coffer until you were ready to leave.
6. The rooms looked tired and the bathtub needed to be redone.
7. It was a challenge to get loungers with pads as they ran out and the hotel was not filled.
8. The bar was using cheaper brands of alcohol and very little name brands.
9. The red house was terrible and not good at all compared to last years house red.
10. Some bars opened later and closed earlier than last year and same with the buffet.

Melia Peninsula Varadero: Our review
Good day, I am writing to you with feed back on our recent stay from March 9th-16th.
We would like to start with the acknowledgement of the hard work your staff do to keeps the grounds as well as room clean.
The pride of maintaining the resort is apparent. I especially enjoyed the ground keepers picking a flower & giving it with a warm smile
& a "Have a nice day". Please acknowledge to them how appreciated this is. It is these little things that make your place special.
We also enjoyed[... read more] your nightly entertainment. Your dancers are lovely to watch. May I suggest that at the end of the show, the host
suggest that a box is located at the exit for any donation and/or pictures can be taken with a dancer of choice for a minimum fee. This would
be a more gentle way than being greeted at the exit by a hat & asked for donation -(this left a bitter taste for me).
Please acknowledge the tall young man with a pony tail. He was delightful to watch working the crowd. Always had a smile & was always
poised and polite. He is a big asset to your resort. I did not interact directly with him but enjoyed seeing his enthusiasm for his work.
We ate at 3 restaurants during our stay. We were pleased with the Mexican & Italian but the staff of the Bistro leaves much to desire. We thought
they showed bad attitude, showing up at the table only for the necessary, with no regard for our requests. After asking several staff several times for bread
we finally got it after they saw I was not eating my diner (about 10 minutes). It was not especially busy & one particular table seemed to be getting all the attention.
Please remind them we are all customers.
Also could you kindly have the staff who takes reservation to advise customers to be on time for their reservation & that they should leave when done since other
people have made reservation after them. On both the Mexican & Italian nights we were told to wait outside until table freed up. From outside we could see people were
done, just talking & laughing. We had 8:00pm reservation & on the one night waited 1/2 hr.......so why bother making reservation?
As for the Currency Exchange person, it would be courteous to count the money being given instead of just sliding it under the glass. Also a quick explanation of the
exchange & fee would be appreciated. They are used to the transaction, not so for us. I was surprise when I got back 13 cuban $ for $20.00 CDN.
But the most annoying was the total disregard from the reception staff as well as the staff at the reception bar location. Many times during our 7 day stay did I wait 5 minutes
or more as internal staff talked to each other about personal stuff. Waiters talking with reception staff, or two reception staff talking together, bar tenders talking with each other
No acknowledgment that you are standing there waiting. And when they do decide to talk with you no apologies for making you wait. I am sure this is not what management
is paying their staff for. Then again maybe this is the cuban way & is not an issue.
We have been to Cuba before & stayed at other resorts. As much as you have many good qualities, at this time we would not return or recommend your resort to our friends.
All your staff needs to be on the same page, that we are there to have a stress free few days. For me this means a welcoming reception & accomodating staff. In this case a few
bad apples have spoilt the barrel.
We also had issues with the Air Transat staff but this I will address with them.
Thank you for your consideration,
Peter & Georgette
