Lovely property. Well maintained by groundskeepers. Great layout. Beach and pool were large, beautiful and lots of chairs and shade when required. Rooms were large but odd choices made by designer. No chest of drawers so really you live out of your suitcase. Rooms are really dark. Need more lighting. No toilet paper holder or hooks to hang wet suits in the bathroom. And really who DOESN'T have a door on the bathroom!!! Just WEIRD.
Food was good but would have been great if it was hot. Even when[... read more] it just came out of the kitchen it was still like warm. Bugs were out 24/7 especially first thing in the morning and just after dinner. Everyone got bit big time.

Iberostar Origin Daiquiri: Room for major imrovement
Hotel is in declining repair, common areas, hall ways all in need of paint and updated lighting. Our room was ok but was missing light bulbs, very common theme in most rooms. Buffet was typical and menu never changed. Specialty restaurants were better option. Pool area was good but resort ran out of towels. Would not recommend this resort and would not consider returning. Beach area in terrible shape with no maintenance, no effort to fix walkways, tidy up loungers, groom the beach area.

Gran Muthu Imperial: The good and the bad
The good:
- Amazing workers, and very hard working especially Yasmani, Ismani, Liuba, and Anniel Hernandez ! They are the ONLY reason we would visit the resort again as well as the other workers because everyone was respectful and great.
- Beaches and pools were perfect.
- entertainment every night and all dancers were phenomenal
-Disco parties at night had amazing music and dancing.
The bad:
- Food was always slightly and sometimes severely undercooked (got sick even though I had immuniza[... read more]tions before trip). Cooks were always respectful and kind but the taste of the food was always bad (ALL FOOD) which we expected so we had our own condiments (salt, pepper, hot sauce) and ate fries on most days.
- maids were always extremely kind but they are trained to use the same broom to clean all toilets and that is beyond disgusting. After seeing that once, I cleaned my own washroom and told maids not to go near the washroom for the 7 days. Poor economy and no cleaning resources are to blame, not the lovely maids.
- hotel and room always kept very clean but like I said in the previous point, using proper cleaning equipment would have made me happy. I was constantly afraid that I might catch hepatitis A because no gloves are used and cleaners MIGHT clean washrooms and change pillow cases without washing their hands (fecal - oral route of disease transmission).
- we had Ants in our room and bed and pillows (not many ants, maybe 20 in room, and 10 in bed) so bring ant spray. The other people we travelled with had no ants in their room and we checked as we are a family.

Gran Muthu Imperial: It was good enough
It was good enough, but not good enough for a 5-star hotel The beach was rocky and small, had to take a cart to go to a sand beach. The food was not good. I've never seen such a small buffet. Almost no veggies, no olives, no shrimp, very limited snack in general. Only the desserts were good. We were given a shampoo only once. The staff was very pleasant and friendly. The staff gets 5 stars, the rest wasn't impressive.

Gran Muthu Imperial: Amazing!!!!
This hotel was absolutely perfect! It wasn't huge and had more of a small resort feel so it didn't take very long to get to the buffet/lobby/beach/pools/snack bar etc. The food was great- lots of variety. Even if they didn't have tortillas one night, all we had to do was ask and they made us whatever we wanted with the tortillas (tacos, quesadillas). The staff were unbelievable, happy, positive and willing to help with whatever was needed. Lots of adventures to go on as well to give variety. We [... read more]learned we could just take a short taxi to wherever we wanted to go and pay at the door (swim with the dolphins) and not pay the airline price which was usually double. The weather was perfect which was great! We will absolutely go back here :)
I will start with the positives beach 🖠amazing. Pools were good.
Most of the staff were happy and friendly.
Had a great excursion to Moron etc.
The resort is in total disrepair except the lobby and bar area and buffet.
The rooms need severe help. The response to issues was pathetic. No water sometimes at the whole resort. Stayed in a bungalow, it was dark and the shower had issues, tv had issues, safe was busted. Extra pillows in the closet were revolting. No mini bar as advertised just [... read more]a fridge.
Ended up moving to another room which was better but no hot water. Patio door was broken.
Food was absolutely awful except surprisingly on our last night they had food we could eat. Then came the surveys to our table. That was annoying. They can make good if they wanted to.
Next day it was same old.
They would not serve wine sometimes at the bar claiming to run out but had 40 plus bottles in plain site. The 24 hour snack bar closed at 5 pm every day.
We both got sick from the food and had to miss an excursion.
Simply not as advertised.

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: GRAND MUTHU CAYO GUILLERMO
We stayed at the Grand Muthu from 6 - 13 September 2019 travelling from Toronto on Air Transat. The mosquitos inside the Cayo Coco airport were awful. Everyone was swatting until we got to our air conditioned bus. It was the same leaving the airport a week later. We arrived late in the evening with 6 other passengers on our bus. Most of the tourists got off at the Melia Cayo Guillermo. Check-in was quick and our luggage went on a golf cart while we walked to our assigned building #4 over[... read more]looking the main pool and partial view of the ocean. The room was large and beautifully decorated. The mini fridge held a 2 L bottle of water, 2 Bucaneer beer and 2 Colas. This is the 1st resort I have stayed in in Cuba that has screen doors on the patio/balcony to enjoy the natural breeze without bugs flying inside.
Next morning, we took the short walk to the buffet. The cooks and staff were smiling and friendly and the food selection was appetizing. However, dining was a challenge while waving away house flies that were constantly lighting on the table surface. It was the same all week.
The beach was lovely. Many palappas and loungers. The water was too clouded to snorkel but a 5 CUC bus ride took you to Playa Pilar beach where you rented your chair and bought food and drinks. Another bus took you to a market in Cayo Coco. The hotel's gift store was very small with limited items for sale.
The pools were big, lovely and clean. Nobody used the bali beds around the pools because the coverings were so badly stained. The bartenders and drinks were top of the line.
We always tipped because the wait staff, cooks and bartenders were so friendly and made us feel very welcome. Shout out to my favourite chef, William, who grilled my meat to perfection using tasty spices I enjoyed so much.
Mosquitos were abundant at night.
Evening shows were well done. The animation team, led by Carlos, was upbeat and non stop in providing activities for the guests.
The a la cartes were disappointing. I was especially looking forward to the Indian because we love curry dishes. The set menu had no curry spice. There were 4 dishes in different sauces but we didn't recognize the taste in either the beef, chicken, lamb or vegetarian dishes. They were all very bland.
The Italian restaurant offered lasagna but again, the meat and sauce were tasteless. The cheese topping was good.
The Seafood a la carte, to my surprize, offered curried shrimp that was delicious and should have been on the Indian a la carte menu because it actually had curry in the recipe. The fish offering was a huge piece of very dark flesh fish my husband said was too fishy and salty for him. The broccoli and vegetables were boiled to mush. The buffet food was better.
We changed rooms because the noise from the music and microphone was too loud for us. We are seniors and spend more time in our room than the younger guests. Our 2nd quieter room was perfect but the air conditioner was broken and couldn't be repaired so they moved us midweek to our 3rd room on the same floor but the toilet wouldn't fill with water to flush......little repair things that were annoying and not expected of a 4+ resort.
The hotel bills itself as 5 star and Air Transat describes it as 4.5*. The 5 star Grand Muthu Imperial located next door is adults only. There were a lot of children the week we were there. The resort has an excellent kids program.
We would return to the Grand Muthu and the picturesque area again.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Could have been better
Food is generally (breakfast, luch & dinner) decent/tolerable compared to other Cuban resort. Love the beach... not a lot of seaweeds or sea grass (haven't seen jelly fish... which is good); it's very calm and is pretty shallow from a good stretch; there's a good amount of water activities... but haven't noticed beach activities (like zumba by the beach). Unfortunately, there's no free recreation in the resort... i.e., indoor table tennis, billiard, etc.; although we went during MOSQUITO SEASON [... read more](we didn't know it was that bad), which is ur pretty much want to stay inside the room inorder not to get bitten to death by mosquitos. Service and room is good. I dont' know why there is a phone without a dial tone and directory. If you need a service... you have to go to service desk (everywhere there is a mosquito, including inside the room it's just less). And for some reason the insect repellant spray, bracelet doesn't work). I heard from other tourist mosquitos there don't care; you can even get bitten from on top of your clothing. I didn't see they defog for mosquitos; although previous resort did twice a day and there's barely any mosquito/s.

Tryp Cayo Coco: GREAT Resort!!
We had a great time at this resort - not our first time to Cuba but our first to the Cayo Coco area. It's a great area to just relax for the week as there's not much off-resort other than the usual excursions and the market a 10 minute walk away, although Steve and the rest of the entertainment team really keeps it lively on resort anyways!
Check-In: We arrived later in the evening (9pm) and were checked in immediately...it was fast and very friendly service, and they even told us exactly wh[... read more]ere to go for food right away. We exchanged our $ at check-in and got a better rate than at the airport.
Rooms: We were in Block 5 with an ocean view, 2nd floor room. The room itself was dated (as we expected) but everything worked fine except for one electrical outlet (but who cares?) The AC was ice-cold, which we appreciated as the week we were there was exceptionally hot - it got up to 43 degrees one day with the humidity - so it was a nice escape after spending the entire day by the pool or at the beach. We were never without hot water, the pressure was great, and the room was everything we needed it to be.
Food: We never went hungry, that's for sure! For it being low season, we were actually expecting far less than we received...the buffet was exceptional. After being at numerous resorts in Cuba and the DR, this resort had one of the best buffets and a great selection comparably. We always sat in Fidel's area, he was amazing! The snack bar downstairs was good, nothing special but they did do some great little ham & cheese sandwiches. The only a la carte we went to was the Cuban, and it was simply amazing...better than some restaurants I've been to here in Canada, actually. Definitely take advantage of it!
Pool & Beach: We spent the entire first day at the beach, the water was crystal clear with no seaweed to be seen. The bali beds are a great touch! One suggestion - bring a large beach blanket and some dollar-store clips to lay over the top for full shade, otherwise you'll get some of the sun as the shades don't cover the entire tops. Lots of beach loungers available always, and the beach was massive compared to the pictures I've seen. Towards the end of the week it was red-flagged due to the high winds, and the heavy waves did leave some seaweed and a 3-4 foot drop on the beach, but it was still beautiful! The pool always had tons of room, and it was cleaned daily. Watch for crabs though - they liked to fall in overnight and we were usually picking them out first thing in the morning, larger crabs and little hermit crabs in their tiny shells. There was always events going on at the pool, Steve and the rest of the team kept it entertaining and fun every single day!
A couple of tips: At the lobby bar, make sure you get a Spanish Coffee or two in the evening as a nightcap - they are delicious (and potent!) Also get them to make you an Aqua Hurricane (thanks Yaniel & Maylan!)...tasty little things! And make sure you go to the evening entertainment, the crew is very talented here!
Above all, I would recommend the Tryp to anyone I know...the people who work here are the friendliest and the best I have ever had the pleasure of meeting at any resort I have been to. They really do make you feel so welcome, and we will definitely be back!

Gran Muthu Imperial: MGM Grand Muthu Imperial
Stayed from Sept 6-Sept 13
Beach: Pretty long beach, from the beach bar to MGM Rainbow is around a 1km walk and some change. Closer to the bar there are the seashells but the further you go left, it turns into sand. There is seaweed that washes up on shore, it was raked once on Wednesday but the rest of the week it just accumulated, especially after the big storm we got on Monday. We stayed in the furthest palapas to the left all week since the water had the least amount of rocks there. Since[... read more] it was low season there were times it was only me and my girlfriend in the water at any given time. I counted 20 people max 1 day. When it's low tide and the water is calm it looks beautiful. Construction occurred at MGM Rainbow but not once did we hear any noise at all from that end.
Resort grounds: Clean and modern, the lawn care group kept the grounds looking spotless, there are levels going from the main floor down to the infinity pool, lots of stairs and ramps for those with mobility issues. Lots of sunbeds for everybody. We are a beach couple and I never go to the pool at an all-inclusive, but at Grand Muthu, I actually got in since there were so few people haha. There are crabs walking around, more at night than anything but we didn't mind them as they weren't a bother to anyone. If anything we found them interesting to watch walk around. We just thought they were part of the resort. Same thing with the resort cats that lived on the grounds as well. Shoutout to my guys Usmael and Angel for hooking it up with the fresh coconuts when we asked for some.
Room: Once again clean and modern, the bed was nice and firm which we liked. The bathroom was spacious, had some leaking from the shower but what all-inclusive shower doesn't leak lol. An interesting quirk was that the mirror (for looking at your outfits) was in the bathroom and not outside by the front door which was weird as there was a giant space there clearly made for a mirror. Girlfriend also noticed there was no outlet in the bathroom for hair straightener etc. We were in bungalow 9, 3rd floor overlooking the pool, right next to the stairs so we only had a neighbour to our right and below us. We were originally placed in 2B but I requested a different room asap while we were still checking in on Friday Night. It looks like they put most of the guests in 2B/9 and some in 7/8, the rest looks closed or were being used by resort staff is my guess.
Food: Was actually good by Cuban all inclusive standards. there was some repetitiveness but there was always something to eat. There was never a shortage although, we only got bacon on Thursday and Friday. Shoutout my guy Ronaldo at the omelete stand, he knew my order down pat. The ala cartes were also surprisingly good except international, that salmon is bad as somebody here had mentioned previously. We had Seafood, Asian, international all in the restaurants next to the buffet. the restaurant by the beach was still closed. That snackbar is clutch for a bite to eat at any time. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive and did their jobs professionally.
Bar: Service was solid, we got our drinks quick enough, not sure if the low occupancy rate had to do with this. One observation to be made was that the pool bar closed at 5pm, at this time there were still people at the pool who had to go to the snackbar for a drink.
Shows/Entertainment: We only went to a couple but they were enjoyable to watch. We liked live music performances as they are very talented. Big shoutout to the piano guy playing requests and songs after 8pm, he's good. Entertainment staff did their job keeping people involved, we as beach people missed most of it haha but did you really stay at the MGM Grand Muthu Imperial if you didn't do the dance at least once? (people who have stayed will know this lol)
All in All a great stay. We didn't really have any issues. We had requested late checkout on the house but they said we had to pay even tho the resort was empty and they had many rooms to spare. We booked with Holasun via Tripcentral and our rep was helpful but would not haggle on the excursion prices at all which is a first as Sunwing/Air Transat/West Jet/AC usually have some wiggle room. Might be because of low season? At first, it was weird to see so few people, the pool guy said there were 113 people as of wednesday but we enjoyed the calmness of so few people and everybody having their own space at the resort We enjoyed our stay at the MGM Grand Muthu Imperial. I am not one to return to the same resort ever but I am curious what this place would be like with the resort with more people, resorts all opened and the beach completed. I would definitely recommend this place

Gran Muthu Imperial: Amazing Holiday!!
We were very impressed with the hotel. The rooms was great and very clean each day of our stay. Modern bathroom with rain style shower head. We had a king bed in our room with oceanview, bed was very comfrortable. Our maid created amazing decorations with towels and flowers on our bed every day. Our trip was from Sept 2 to the 9th and it was very quiet as it is low season. We had choice of lounges or beds with overhead pergolas. We spent most of our time at the pool area. Service at the h[... read more]otel was excellent. We went to the beach one day only. As per other reviews we knew that it is a bit rocky from the beach bar to the beach, water shoes or sandles may this short walk a breeze. The food is typical Cuban, but I found we had more choices at the buffet than previous trips. One nice feature was the 24hr snack bar that actually had a menu.. We had fish and chips and even poutine. Yasme, the entertainment director is a human dynamo, he is there from morning till late evening. From the gardeners, waitstaff ,bartenders, to the #1 bus driver in Cuba, they are so eager to please you and make your trip enjoyable. Nightly entertainment was great. We only booked 1 a la carte restaurant and it was the Chinese and was very good. We also took advantage of the romantic dinner that was 30 cuc pesos per person, they had our table all decorated and we were served an appetizer followed by a soup then the main wich consisted of lobster, steak rice and veg with deep fried ice cream . We even had a four piece group come and sing at our table. We had a very good time, weather was good, we left 35 degree weather to come back to a cool 12 degrees. We would return again....
