Great resort -- bring water shoes for the beach

This resort is beautiful. Grounds are impeccable, pools stunning, beach beautiful, staff helpful. Buffets are meh, a la cartes were decent. Bring water shoes for beach swimming as there are some small, rounded rocks and shoes make for a more comfortable experience. We are a 20-something married couple and had a swim-up room in the Family Club which we HIGHLY recommend as it was a beautiful room but boarding on a very quiet pool with quiet neighbours and a very nearby bar. Also, free wifi in the  [... read more]Family Club (not elsewhere). The resort is big and beautiful -- be prepared to walk about 10 minutes to the beach. There is a little shuttle, but walking was faster.

Room for improvement

Let see the room was ok but had issues with the plumbing we had one tap that was very loose the other one would spray water on your face, the shower head was hanging down at a strange angle and was also very loose. The entire room felt dated and tired and when it rained water was leaking in from the ceiling! The bbq bar on the beach is a joke and needs a total remake, the beach and pools usually felt overcrowded and loud, we paid extra for the platinum room with the private pool and it was well  [... read more]worth the price even with the issues with the room.

Beautiful Resort

Our second time at this amazing Resort was as memorable as the first.Beautiful grounds,Pools and wonderful Service.I would like to see walk in steps in more of the pools.Being a Senior we find the ladder hard to manage.

Magnificent Mexico

The grounds were amazing! Our room was beautiful. Most of the staff were great. The beach was okay. The food was good with the exception of the seafood restaurant. We weren't impressed with that restaurant at all. Great resort!

Amazing resort

This resort is beatiful clean modern and fun the buffet restaurants are really good,people are very friendly and profesional. We had a beautiful vacations at the resort. I was with my family at family club area the best !

A Great Place For A Vacation

Just returned fro spending 2 weeks at Grand Sunset Princess, our 3rd visit there. This is a well maintained resort. The rooms and grounds are spotless. The food good. we were missing a few things in our room on arrival but a phone call had them there in a matter of minutes. We have no complaints at all about this resort and have no reservations about recommending it. We will be back for sure.

Fantastic Resort!

Everything about this resort was top notch. This a big resort and everything is well kept and clean. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The restaurants and food was excellent. There are many pools to chose from and you could always find a swim up bar to enjoy drinks. The beach did have some kelp on most days but I am more a pool person, so it was not a concern.

Beautiful resort not so great of a beach!

the resort was absolutely stunning, pools great, food good, weather wonderful, the beach was awful. there was tons of sea weed all along the beach, and even though the resort tried to keep it clean they just couldn't. the beach chairs were very crowded since there was not much space on the beach. the water was also not great.

Grand Sunset Princess - Riviera Mya - AMAZING!! -

We just returned home from our vacation here Feb 11 - Feb 18. The resort is absolutely beautiful and well maintained. The accommodations are fantastic! Don't be fooled by negative reviews, everyone's expectations differ, but from our perspective we found this place to be amazing all the way around! Family Princess Area We stayed in this section in a swim out room, the rooms were huge and very nice, the cater to kids, below are some of the highlights. - There is a private bar never busy. - Swim o [... read more]ut rooms (pool is a little cold but you get used to it. - Private restaurant the caters to the kids, and never busy in and out with no wait. - Ice cream shop (my kids loved it). - Water park and kids club area. *** There is a little secret most people at the resort aren't aware of, this section is free WiFi NO PASSWORD so if you walk over to this area you can jump on no problem. Food Anyone that complains about food at this resort is just plain picky. We ate like kings and that is truly and understatement! We ate in a different A La Carte each night. the A La Carte are all 3-5 course meals, really way to much food. ALL of the A La Carte were fantastic, and no issues booking them. Use your concierge and get him/her to book them all in one shot just tell them which ones and what time and they will give you receipt reservations. We never waited and most times showed up 1/2 early and got in no problems. Here are our ratings based on our preference 1 - Mam Mia (Italian) Awesome food, appetizers were great, and the pasta is some of the best we had. 2 - Miso - Asian Cuisine - We went here twice the sit down and the Tapenyaki both were very good, again a LOT of food! 3 - La Fleur - Grill - I had probably the best Filet Mignon I have ever had here, and the portions are big. 4 - La Vaqueria - Its all about the meat, the appetizer, through to the entrees is meat. I had a massive T-bone steak which was very flavorful, a little fatty but still very good. 5 - Swiss La Fondue - This was also very good and a nice experience which was a little different than the others. If you don't like cheese don't go! Buffets - There is a variety of food in these that appeases everyone, if you cant find something you like here then you are really picky. Yes they can be repetitive, however there is no possible way you can eat everything everyday day an night and try everything they have!! They are massive, so just find what you want, I even had a grill Rib Eye at the buffet one night and was great! The Resort Grounds What more can you say about this other than it is AMAZING. Fr anyone the complains of the walk from one end to the other (unless you have a disability - no offense to anyone), then you are just lazy! Walking through the resort each day and early morning was the highlight of my day. There are live animals (iguana, monkeys, Colatis) everywhere. The resort is massive and pathways throughout so if you like exercise or just walking, I encourage you to walk around the resort, these people work EXTREMELY hard and never stop from morning to night to keep the place exceptionally clean! Pools There are so many pools there are some for everyone. We had a swim out room and the pool was great. There is the main "party pool" which is louder (music playing and events going on all day long its fun, but can be a little overwhelming with the party like atmosphere or people who have had too much tequila! lol. But don't worry, find one of the other 11 pools to lounge at or read a book. The Beach The beach is great, and it is busy during the day (reserve your chairs early by 8 am its probably 60 - 70 % packed). There is a bar there the serves as well the best BBQ snack shack that serves hamburgers, hot dogs, the best chips and salsa and guac ever! If you want to pay for the chill out (we didn't bother) as we had free WiFi in the Family section and were quite capable to walk to get drinks at the bar! The ocean itself is very nice, but understand Riviera Mya is a reef and it constantly moves, so one day the blue blue water will be right in front of you, and the next day it is down 100 feet! But don't let this deter you from the water, its great when you are in. A few rocks but nothing you cant navigate. TIP - If you go about 100 feet to the right (looking out at the ocean) of the main lifeguard chair its nice and sandy, and walk in and veer a little left, then straight out .... nothing but sand. All in all this place is AMAZING. Yes you cant please everyone, but in all honesty we traveled as a family of 4 2 adults and 2 kids (10 & 13) and we all had a GREAT time. Not to scare anyone, just trying to put things in perspective on how well this resort operates, this was totally not any fault of the resort but the people above us!! On our 5th day we returned from a day at the beach at around 4:30 and opened the door to our room to find 4" of water on the entire floor and water pouring through the ceiling from the unit above!!! I called our concierge right away and told him, we grabbed all of our stuff and pulled it outside, within 3 min there were 5 people (including the concierge, head of maintenance and 3 cleaners) at our room. It turns out the people above us left their Jacuzzi running and it overflowed and kept going! Within 1/2 hour were were in a brand new room, and any of our clothes or anything was taken and laundered! We received a few extra perks as well as a fruit platter and bottle of champagne the next day for the inconvenience! All in all we were down a 1/2 hour total time to change rooms, and they moved everything for us, and we were back on our way!! This was to no fault of the resort, but to the people above us caused this, and the resort took ownership ASAP!! I will be returning to this resort again without hesitation!! Sorry for the long post, but if you are like me and looking for some real info on the resort and tired of reading TripAdvisor about people giving it a 3 star because the walk was to long or there was a foot print scuff on the bottom of the door, then this was our experience! Very Nice Resort....good value for the money!

The resort was very nice, the service was always very prompt and staff were eager to please. The grounds were immaculately groomed and they had a lot of swimming pools. Getting a beach chair was never a problem, but we opted to stay at the Chill Out beach area, where we paid USD$13 and had access to better chairs and daily WIFI. The rooms were clean, we ended up getting the two double beds, which was great. The washroom was equipped with double sinks and a separate toilet and shower stall which  [... read more]made it convenient for two people to use facilities but still have privacy. The SAFE in room worked very well, which in some places is a hit and miss. The only complaint I had about our room #1205 is that the bed was very hard and the pillows were tiny….which made for an uncomfortable sleep…you would wake up with bed sores (and I am not a heavy person). I did ask for bigger pillows, but they just ended bringing me another small pillow. The other issue with our room was that we were right off the main lobby, which had a 24 hour bar very close by….and the noise from the bar went into the middle of the night 3-4am. I am a pretty heavy sleeper…so not too big of a deal, but probably not ideal for an lighter sleeper. The restaurants were very good, we never had to wait for a seat and the buffets had a good variety, both for breakfast and lunch. We had unlimited access to the specialty restaurants so we booked one for every night. The Italian and Japanese were our favorite. The steak house was not that great, it would have been nice to have a seafood option. The drinks were good, the wine was a little watered down, but they did serve premium liquors. Also the restaurants near the pool and beach area, were formal restaurants, enclosed buildings which protected the food, from birds and flies which I really appreciated. They also fumigated for mosquitoes nightly and we didn’t have any issue with bites. This is my 3rd time to the Mayan and I have to say the beaches unfortunately have really taken a beating from the Hurricane…I think in 2008 or 09….the seaweed is a real problem, they are manually trying to clear it every morning. Also the water is on the rocky and rough side. Overall I would rate the hotel a 8.5/10 and it was good value for the money and would definitely recommend it to friends and family. Sunwing on the other hand I didn’t have such a good experience. Our flight #4089 was delayed 3 hours on Feb 14th, we also had to wait over an 1.5 at the Cancun airport before we collected our luggage. There was then another delay with the transfer van to our hotel, we arrived in our hotel room at 3:15 am. On the return flight #4090, it was delayed 1 hour. Our plane landed in Buffalo at 5:30pm, I didn’t get my luggage until 8pm! My understanding from the Sunwing and airport rep was that it is Sunwing’s responsibility to ensure they have enough baggage handlers for incoming and outgoing flights. I was disappointed with Sunwing and probably wouldn’t use them for my next vacation.

A HUGE dissapointment!

This an example of a mega resort. It's listed as a 670 room resort, when in fact it has yet another 670 rooms on the other side, plus another 200 platinum rooms all sharing the same beach! It was hard if not impossible to find any lounge chairs pool side or beachside. Let me start with the beach, the water was rough and murky when I was there. For the couple of hours when the water was its calmest during my 1 week stay, I still wouldn't have considered venturing in for all of the rocks in my way [... read more]. I saw lots of people with cuts on there feet, ankles, legs. Also, a lady was bitten (puncture marks) in the water. The ocean is where I love to spend my time, so this was very disappointing! You definitely want to to pack a bag if you plan to stay down for the day because it's a long way back to your room if you are not platinum. The beach was never cleaned or raked once. Lots of vendors going back and forth including the spa staff. Quite a few beds on the beach for a massage, however they offer no privacy right next to the volleyball court. Could barely see the sand for the amount of lounge chairs. Never saw them cleaned either. Food at the beach was just hamburgers hot dogs and nachos. Just ok, and definately no smiles from the server. Had to wait in line for drinks. No waiters offering to bring you a drink either. Tried the chill up bar once. With fee and free wifi. Ordered food, it was just ok. I ordered the nachos assuming retried beans meant vegetarian, that didn't happen. Took quite a while (45 minutes) for food and drinks to come. Didn't go back again. Beds were super hard, have come to expect this, so no surprise there. Awful musty smell, stayed on ground floor. Toilet overflowed twice. Yuck! Maid service was inconsistent at best even with regular tipping. ie. Face cloths were there the first day, then had to ask every other time at front desk. Food was ok at buffet, kids liked the Italian ala carte (of course). Miso was good. Walked out of the steak restaurant ( no point) no filet, only Flinstone size T bone and ribeye. Couldnt find the meat for the fat. Steaks came with a 1/2 a baked potato and half a cob of corn (both dead dry). To summarize, I can usually make do just about anywhere, and make the best out of a situation. I understand the staff work hard etc.This is a vacation after all. I didn't realize this was a mega resort because it was advertised as only 670 rooms, which I thought was already at the top end of my comfort level. My teenage boys loved the competition on the volleyball court. Pool was to cold in January to swim. No beach swimming, to dangerous. Staff ok. No real stand outs other than the sports bar. Terrible, horrible, awful wine! Checked the wine list to purchase (highway robbery) went to the liquor store in Playa del Carmen (must do)! Excursion, snorkelling and lunch at Maroma Beach. Snorkelling and beach were just ok, lunch was good. Won't ever return!

Best Experience EVER!!

It was my first trip south and i would go back in a heartbeat. Beautiful resort, extremely well maintained. Nice, big rooms, great buffets and a la carte. The chill out lounge was amazing. The ambiance was fantastic, the multiple pools gave you different areas to hang out, the disco was lots of fun and the staff were very polite and friendly. The only negative...do NOT buy anything at the gift shop. $12 US for a big bag of chips is highway robbery. Other than that it was a truly memorable and ex [... read more]ceptional trip.

Nice Resort

Clean resort, rooms were good, bed was a little hard, always had to ask for wash cloths. We had some trouble at first as we travelled with other couples and they had seperated our rooms and no help till we got a lovely young lady on the 2nd day at the main desk and she got us a room very close to our friends. Food was okay but not over the top, nice selection at the buffet and most waiters were pleasant, our breakfast and lunch waiter, Samuel at the Rivieria Snack, was quite pleasant. Beautiful resort..tooo many unruly children..

I stayed 2wks over Xmas Newyears.1st week was in a terrible room mould shower fell out..jacuzzi not work then flood..kids diving off private balcony very dangerous but no one responded..kids unsupervised..and not to be in this area.more enforcement !..desk congerie staff Sunset side not helpful for room problems..feel 1 week of my vac was ruined and tried not to let it bother me..after 1 week i badically demanded action anf they made me wait 4 hours..with no room shower plus they had my stuff wh [... read more]ile they ' tried to get a bellboy to bring new room cards as they had the old..I missed dinner and was totally stressed out. also no robe slippers towels no internet..no dvd cd or iron as brochure states..food was A1 but very very difficult to evenake dinner resrrvations as desk girl was alwsys promoting side trips..i actually tipped a competitor Bd travel..to make reservations for me when desk was not baclogg..i loved the grounds pools bars beach but service definately needs improvement ..they did treat me bett er on Riveria side..thank god..flew Sunwing back to Breslau..was delayed more than 12 hours with no explanation or detsils..just stay out of airpirt bcud was too congested. they gave voucher for $20. but couldnt even use it as only 1 restaurant and it was filled..the stewardess sd it was bcus they had no pilots and had to wait for some to be off therir max time from Jamaica. terrible .

Fantastic resort! Something for everyone!

This resort is super clean and absolutely beautiful ! We have been here 4 times and even got married here. I would and have recommended this resort to many people.. Who also loved it! The food was amazing..the buffets and a la cartes both. So many choices! Beautiful new kids area, fun poolside activities and entertainment . Having a swim out room was the best part! The beach wasn't the greatest but the rest of the resort makes up for it!

Beatiful Resort

The resort was beautiful..the grounds were always clean, the workers always friendly, the food was amazing, the pool was great. Big resort so alot of walking. Only disadvantage is there was no WIFI..you could purchase it but it only would do one device. The ocean was warm but had alot of weeds in it..kids loved the beach volleyball and the drinks were really good also.

Beautiful Resort

This resort was situated in a great location, close to the airport and directly on the most beautiful part of the beach. The grounds and pools were well maintained and the staff worked very hard. Food in the buffets is typical of what you find in most resorts and the restaurants had great service and large portions. Rooms could use a little touch up (some are staring to show their age) and there were several tiles missing from the pool in our swim up room. Excellent value for your money

Although the resort is large it is situated in such a fashion that it did not feel crowded. Staff is very professional and the service is very good as well. We also enjoyed the many restaurants and the quality of food. The area for small children was great and also their opportunity to find some suitable activities.

Fantastic resort

Resort is huge. But easy to get around with the trolley system. The pools are amazing and the pools and grounds are kept so immaculate. The staff are friendly and the food good. The ocean and the beach are great and never had a problem getting a lounger. The bar on the beach could be bigger or have two bars are more waiters for the beach area. Loved the resort.
