The resort is big a lot of walking or they have express golf cart service but be prepared to wait a long time out front of your room as we did. My husband has a bad knee and needed the service and at times we waiting 40 minutes for one. The beach is very beautiful and ocean was warmer than the pool. Pool is not heated at all. Swim up bar was very well laid out. Food was very over cooked. beautiful fresh seafood just cooked way to much. The staff at the resort was good but they are not equip[... read more]ped to handle plus size people. As we got there and we had to hunt for a chair with no arms for my husband. Every time we went for dinner or lunch or breakfast we had to wait for a chair. There were some in the lobby which was totally smoke filled and as non smokers very hard to breath so we had to miss out on the entertainment at night and to sit in the lobby bar. There were non smoking tables right next to smoking tables and some of the guests just smoked anywhere they pleased. Not enjoyable at the least. They only had a tiny wheel chair that maybe would fit a child and to top it off they said for us to try it and the arm rest fell off when we held on to it. There were a few chairs with arms the first 3 days we were there and then they received new tables and chairs and took away every single no arm chair in the resort. So needless to say my husband was embarrassed to go and try to sit anywhere as people starred as we were asking for a chair with no arms. Again the people were okay ..Our A/c broken in our room the first night and the electrical plugs were black and things just fell out of the sockets ..not safe. There were cockroaches in the room by our fridge and toilet so we kept everything locked up and close the entire trip. The room was spacious and maid always kept it clean for us. Fidel the driver was awesome and Dianna the maid was a joy to have. The breakfast little buffet side were amazing as well and always had my husbands chair waiting at the table for him. If you are handicap or can not walk far you will not want to get a superior room as they are on the out side of the main lobby furthest away from the lobby or restaurants. The standard rooms are a bit smaller but all the same really. So we made the best of it and enjoyed the week vacation. Sorry we don't usually write a bad review but some people need to know especially plus size people.
thanks Jodi penfold

Sol Rio de Luna y Mares: Resort is “okâ€
My family and I had an opportunity to stay in this resort from January 6 to January 12, 2017. Positive side: great service and friendly and helpful staff, food wasn’t bad, but poor variety, repetitive every day. We enjoyed the night shows and entertainment. Negative side: tired looking rooms, needs a lots of upgrades, smell from washrooms was disgusting! Water never was warm enough, so we were having a quick shower especially on cool days (unfortunately we weren’t lucky with weather).

We had such an amazing time just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful views of the ocean and the resort. The staff was fanominal and couldnt have asked for a better time or staff. The food was a little different from what we were used to but change is always a good thing. The experience was beyond words and can't wait to go back!!

Don Lino Hotel: "Relaxation Heaven"
This was my second time to Don Lino and I loved it!!!! I enjoyed the food but I am not a picky eater. Some complained at the that their wasnt a choice. If you take everything every meal then you may feel that way too. If i could get their breakfast sausage " I WOULD". Local band at dinner is wonderful and so is the staff who work their no matter where. I am going back soon and cant wait. If you are looking for a party pace this may not be for you. If you want to relax is perfect. Small village [... read more]and local beach which is amazing within walking distance. Go and enjoy!!!

Brisas Covarrubias: Lovely Resort
We really enjoyed our trip to Villa Covarrubias over the Christmas break. It is a low- key, quiet resort with a lovely beach and beautiful grounds - exactly what we were looking for. The rooms are large, sparsely furnished, very clean and have balconies or terraces. No room is far from the beach or the main hotel area. The food was fine - more fresh salad stuff than at other resorts we have stayed at, which was good for us, as we are vegetarian. There is no sightseeing or shopping available near[... read more]by and the hotel is not close to the airport. It is a 2 hour transfer. I found the drive really interesting, but it was definitely hard on children, after the flight form Canada. This is a superb place to relax and read, walk along the beach, swim etc.
All the staff were awesome.

Brisas Covarrubias: Amazing resort
This hotel is just perfect spot for people who wants to be far from noise of every day life.It is located 40 km from the closest city of Puerto Padre, and it is siting on untouched white sand beach. It is perfectly clear water, untouched nature around resort, clean air and lots of beautiful locations for snorkeling and diving. As well, who like deep sea fishing, it is possible to organize those tours in the hotel. There are some seasons over the year when you can catch big sword fish or big tuna fish.[... read more] Personally, I had that opportunity, and luckily sword fish brake the line, it was so big that it was scary to think how to pull it to the boat.?? Beside this, kids can enjoy shallow water and sand,as well a pool that have three different depth.
Service is very good, for the stars that hotel have, food as well, assortment of vine, beer, and Rom is also good. import drinks are served as well. Basically you can find everything that is described for hotels with 3+ star. Rooms are very spacious, clean, sat TV, Internet over WiFi, ambulance, massage, tennis court , store with regular assortment, beach closed and open restaurant, pool bar 24 hours with food and drinks, lobby bar like hide spot ,disco with A/C, etc. This resort is for anybody who is not looking for small details, and lets not forget, the price is also super for this offers, so who like to rest and party on his way with family or friends there is enough space. I am there last 16 years and I will still be present.

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Second time was even better!
Our vacation was one to remember! From the booking (thanks Lynne Dixon) on we are thrilled with this experience. The resort is clean, the food abundant and delicious; not sure why people complain about Cuban food. The staff, they say, make the resort and this staff is friendly, warm and attentive. The beach is busy but not crowded, the pools (especially the VIP) were well maintained and welcoming. Shows are like other resorts, but they do put a great effort. For our return visit we got a free bo[... read more]ttle of rum and a cigar at a cocktail party. We paid more for the Plus, but others I spoke to said their rooms were fantastic as well. Playa Pesquero: Terrific Christmas Getaway!
It was our 8th visit to Cuba and 2nd visit to the Pesquero so we knew what to expect. A large resort means there's some walking but we don't mind the exercise. It was never too long a wait for transportation (golf carts) if there was a rain shower or if you needed a lift. Just wave them down and they'll stop for you. We figured the resort was a little over 1/2 full with a number of families. Santa made a visit Christmas Day and there seemed to be lots of activities for children. A few decoration[... read more]s made it festive but not over the top.
Lots of variety in the big buffet, the adjoining smaller buffet was quieter. If you were patient enough to stand in a short line and have your pasta/protein/stir fry made to order then it was hot. We never went away hungry. A la carts were very good - they take pride in presentation of a meal and service was great.
Seemed to be no shortage of entertainment in the lobby whether a it was a 7 piece Cuban band or smaller combo's or pianists - something for everyone.
Favourite spot for lunch was Yareyal by the pool. They can do up a tossed salad made to order - excellent!! Worth the walk up from the beach.
They have their awards displayed on a wall in the lobby. Impressive. We met a number of folks who were repeats guests - anywhere from 8 - 24 times. That says a lot for the Pesquero.

Sol Turquesa Beach: Wonderful resort but not without its problems
This was our second time at this resort. In between many renos were done which is obvious by the discarded pieces of machinery which have been replaced that are left for days and weeks outside the door of your room. This is not a resort for anyone with mobility problems or unable to climb stairs. Don't expect golf cart service even though it is supposed to be available. The grounds and pools are phenomenal. The a la carte restaurants, except the Cuban, were excellent. The breakfast buffet was go[... read more]od. The evening buffet was disgusting. The food was inedible and cold except for the ice cream which was inedible and melted. The diamond club is worth the extra cost for the premium liquor and extra service. Finally do not waste your time and money on the trip to Santiago de Cuba as it is 7 hours of driving for 2 hours of harassment by beggars and hawkers in the streets. Even with all this we will be back.

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Great Resort with a few minor issues.
Over all this is a great resort ( commenting on the Plus side, since that is where we stayed).
Clean, very good service, friendly atmosphere.
Food over all was good, and plentiful. Italian restaurant for fresh made thin crust pizza at lunch was our favorite.
Buffets were good but like any buffet repetitive. could use so more theme nights to switch things up a bit.
Snack bars were a nice treat in between meals and late night. A la carte were good too ( did lobster, Cuban and Italian)
Dr[... read more]inks were good, Plus lounge with Eduardo and Adam (bartenders) were a regular stop every night for our group.
Beach for us was great as we love to snorkel and great reef right off the beach with great variety of fish and sea life.
yes there are a lot of rocky areas but if you walk a bit down the beach plenty of sand only entrances.
Our plus side pool was amazing, never an issue for our group of 8 ( even during the holiday season Dec 26- Jan2) to get great pool chairs together for all 8. ( never once did we need to go out early and play the chair towel game) , always arrived pool side after 10 am and never a problem.
Rooms were clean and AC worked well. Cleaning staff was amazing. Had issue with our toilet not flushing on arrival but they quickly fixed the issue.
Water was hot for showers with very good water pressure thru out our stay.
Service thru out the resort was excellent , very attentive and friendly.
As for the minor issues, WiFi was slow and spotty , only available in the front lobby area at a reasonable price ( not really a big issue, you are on vacation )
Biggest issue was the condition of the public bathrooms thru out the resort. With many with non functioning toilets, no blowers/ hand towels or paper towels in any of the several we used. Plus sometimes even no toilet paper. I understand this happening outside the resort but should never be the case inside the resort grounds (especially when everything else was kept up so well.)
We had a delay with our Cubana airlines on the way home , but that has nothing to do with the resort.
But even with these small issues, would still recommend this place. ( the little extra for the Plus side is worth it)
Thank you for the great week Blau Costa Verde Plus!, and Thank you Jessie Newbigging and Trip Central for helping us book this wonderful and definitely memorable trip.

Sol Turquesa Beach: An okay resort
The rooms are clean but they need some updates. (Our shower bar fell off the wall, the remote for the television didn't work, sheets were changed every day but the bed spreads looked like the hadn't been washed in ages). The pools are very well kept. The buffet is small, therefore there are long lineups at times for food. We paid for the Diamond Club for three days and never had our alcohol delivered, when we spoke to customer service, they apologized and said they would speak to the delivery [... read more]man - but that was all he could do. The kids club is great. Kids do activities and they are fed lunch-they even had a kids dinner. The caretakers are wonderful.

Playa Pesquero: Beautiful Place
Playa Pesquero was an amazing resort! The first memorable thing for me was the warmth and friendliness of the staff and their eagerness to answer my questions. The atmosphere for my 1 week stay was set by the picturesque view of the grounds and beach, which were beautifully manicured and maintained. The grounds were filled with colorful flowers which accented the lush green grass; all signs for the lively culture of Cuba. All public area of this resort was clean and well maintained; most import[... read more]antly the high traffic area. My glee was then magnified as we entered our designated suite which was spacious and well groomed. Every day the beds were lovingly made and cleaned with the utmost care. Moreover, as we arrive for our first meal, the presentation in the dining room was superbly displayed. The a la carte kitchen was delicious; I enjoyed the Mediterranean and Caribbean food. Most fondly remembered was the feast presented for us on New Years Eve. Furthermore, the nightly entertainment for both kids and adults were well performed. For the adult entertainment the performers were professional and very capable of their trade which left me in awe and wonder after each show. I would definitely return to Playa Pesquero and suggest this as a destination for my friends and family. As a mater a fact I have already referred four persons sin my return on Jan 02, 2017. Hoping they will actually take that trip and enjoy Playa Pesquero family resort.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Great time!
You get what you pay for, as one of the cheapest options in the Caribbean (at least when we traveled) there were some 'problems', but those problems are nothing compared to the positive experience you will have with your vacation.
I say 'problems' because really, they're not, but as many north Americans have higher expectations, some will be bothered by them. So if you suffer from first world problems disorder, you may be bothered by these 'problems'.
'Problems':
1. Only 1 buffet open fo[... read more]r breakfast and lunch, this can cause line ups during breakfast, though lunch wasn't too bad. A second dinner buffet wasn't open when we first got there, but opened before we left and the staff said it would be open for just dinner until February or so. The staff didn't inform guests that the second buffet was open... so it was usually much quieter, my wife and I spread the word as much as we could, but I even had one guest call me a liar and didn't believe me - some people, jeeze.
2. Our room was not in the best shape, with a number of things worn out and the AC likely won't last much longer, but everything worked. Since we only ever used our room to get ready or sleep, it really doesn't matter. Why travel to sit in your room the whole time - we never even turn the TV on.
3. The 24 hour snack bar actually closes during breakfast and dinner, so maybe it should be called the 18 hour snack bar with 24 hour drinking.
If you can get past those 'problems', you will realize you're in Cuba, the weather is amazing, the beach is incredible, that you're on vacation and going to have a good time. There are tons of activities included, paddle boats, a catamaran ride, there is also the games room, tennis and basketball courts, 24 hour drink service, daily activities and shows, plenty of nearby shops with everything you need, and the local vendors market for souvenirs is right there beside the hotel as well. The kids club which was just great, though our son was too young to be left alone with the staff, (minimum age 4) we absolutely would have left him in their capable hands, and a number of other parents did.
The best part about the hotel was definitely the staff. In every section of the hotel, no matter where we went, in all departments, every Cuban we met working there was just awesome.
And while I didn't put this as a 'problem', I realize maybe some people will be bothered by it... but I don't like to think there is anyone ignorant enough to consider it a 'problem'... especially a Canadian. But, here it goes... in Cuba, all beaches are public, and a popular spot for the locals to go to the beach to relax just like you is right beside the hotel. This means you get to vacation with a few locals, make new Cuban friends and maybe bring a few free beers, hamburgers or shots down to your new friends. If you're shy, they stick to themselves and don't bother anyone, they're there to relax after all. Even those who have things to sell are polite and not aggressive.
Overall we spent 2 full weeks, minus 1 day on a tour at the hotel and never got bored, sick or hungry. We had a really good time, made many friends and are already planning on going back to the Holguin area, we would definitely stay at this hotel again, but there are so many to see and we like to try and see them all... but we will take a visit to Atlantico and visit some of our friends if they are still there.
This hotel is good for singles, couples, families, those looking to party, those just wanting a quiet time, anyone can come here and enjoy themselves.
This hotel is not good for anyone expecting 4 or 5 star quality on a 3 star budget.

Resort is huge, lots of walking. Love the seafoods in Alacarte. Service is great. Lots of dishes to choose from but meat are bland, so I stick with fish and other seafoods. Snack bar has great fried chicken. Different activities in the evening for kids and adult. Beach is the best and Pool is great. I will recommend this resort & will go back again.

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Love Blau
People are great! Food was good too! Buyer beware though - the rum bar is far more expensive than the shop in the lobby - difference was 14 CUC which is about $20 CDN. When we raised it there was nothing they could do. Lessons learned! Also learned that December is the hatch of sand flies/fleas which made the beach stay not so pleasant. Hadn't experienced that in January.
