I have been to many, many resorts in the Caribbean and to Cuba 5 times. The food was not as repetitive at this Cuban resort and every night a different featured meat or poultry, fish at the Buffet. For example they had a turkey, roast beef, salmon and pork loin on the 4 nights we attended. In addition made to order pasta and grilled meats. The food at this resort was not as bland as most in Cuba. One complaint I had was the breakfast pastries and bread were not always fresh and not a big va[... read more]riety. I would also liked to have seen more outdoor BBQs, only one the whole week. The bartender, cook and guy who cleaned at the Beach Snack Bar were fabulous. They went above and beyond to provide excellent service. The rooms are large and very clean. They are currently upgrading the rooms and for the price we paid for the vacation were a very good deal. The alcoholic drinks were okay but often were out of certain liqueurs and it was challenging getting sparkling water although certain bartenders always had it when we showed up at the swim up bar. They were fantastic bartenders and put up with a lot from some of the tourists. We tipped the staff at the resort well because they deserve it. I was really annoyed at people who never tipped. Really? If you can afford to go on vacation you can afford to tip. Quit being so cheap people the Cubans go above and beyond to please you! Iberostar needs to upgrade the swim up bar it is just too small. On the other hand the beach is outstanding and we went down daily. Always lots of chairs. All in all I would highly recommend this resort for value for the dollars we paid. We are seriously considering going back next year.

Gran Muthu Imperial: Awesome
We were so happy with our stay at the Muthu Imperial. Great staff! Rooms were clean and tidy! The beach still needs some improvements but that will come with a little time but there was shade and lots of chairs. Poolside was spacious and also had lots of chairs. Food was not bad and no lineups, but that will probably change when the place gets busier. Looking forward to going back!

Hotel Playa Coco: Great resort
We are back on Canadian soil after our rather hectic week in Caya Coco, Cuba.
Cuba is a place Canadians love to visit and spend a relaxing time enjoying the sunshine, swimming in the pool or in the turquoise blue sea. The beaches here are just gorgeous, with their clean white sands, plentiful cabanas and recliners. Booze and snacks are free, of course and the snack bars on the beach were on a roll. Food was plentiful and served buffet style. The fares were a combination of European and Cuban.[... read more] Surprisingly though most of the items served were imported. The Playa Coco resort where we stayed at did have what they termed "ala carte" restaurants, like Seafood, Italian and Japanese, but the menus were pathetic at best, nothing like the relevant restaurants that the selection Toronto has.
Entertainment was sparse though and many spent their time relaxing by the pools or enjoying copious drink choices. We took in trip into the town of Moron, enjoyed a Cuban lunch and visited a local farm. It was an interesting experience. Our rooms at the Playa Coco resort were quite large with a balcony. Air-conditioning was standard but I guess the unit was leakiing and everything smelt damp. Our flights were comfortable, but we had a few screaming kids who made our trips feel quite miserable. Air Canada should look into providing more amenities, like some food and entertainment like quite a few other airlines. Very cheap of them, I'd say, considering these are international flights.
All said and done, Cuba is a great place to spend a few days to relax, enjoy the sunshine, warmth and ambiance and for a few days at least forget about the drudgery of the Canadian winters.

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Beautiful Resort
First of all let me say that everything about this resort is beautiful. The drive was short and because there's no homes on this island, no traffic. The rooms are well appointed, the grounds and amenities are kept immaculate. The food albeit redundant was fresh, and tasty and if you can't find something to eat, you're too fussy too travel. The coffee in the Bars is wonderful, but don't waste your time on the "brown hot water" they call coffee at the buffet. The Bites bar had good French fries, [... read more]burgers and pizza and the staff were always very helpful and friendly. The front desk staff seemed to really pay attention to detail including; when we arrived one of our rooms had a sticky lock and one of the staff even remembered who we were and went out of their way to let us know it had been fixed. The pool was clean, and the beach was amazing. Downside, we requested a room side by side with our friends, but was told they couldn't accommodate. Ended up a distance from them. There isn't much for shopping on the resort and nothing within walking distance. There is a "mall" with shops and some nice effects, including an awesome coffee shop, but you have to take a bus or cab and it's about a 20 minute drive...and that's it. Just the mall. No real restaurant, just a bar that serves hamburgers (mystery meat well seasoned), and lot's of drinks.
Now to the few things that made it less than perfect. MUSQUITOES! My husband and I are both allergic, so they were more than annoying. The bites actually left bruises on me and they really were too thick to enjoy the nightly shows etc, even with bug spray. During the day at the pool, it was always noisy to the point of being a bit irritating. I realize the entertainment crew have a job to do, but everything was generated from the pool area and it became a bit much after hours of loud music and yelling into a microphone. There were a lot of older people and this being an adult resort, I think they could have made a little effort to accommodate everyone not just the partiers of which the % was fairly low.
So, my overall summary is; if you're looking for a nice relaxing resort where there isn't much to do but relax, (and you can handle the mosquitoes) then GO!
A huge thank you to all off the lovely Cuban people who continue to teach us how to be better and appreciate a simpler life every time we go.

Melia Cayo Coco: Close to Jardines del Rey Airport in Cayo Cocoa
Melia Cayo Cocoa resort: nice short ride to the resort from the airport. resort is not too big and not too small. pool is nice but there is only one. rooms are nicely done and clean. maid service was excellent and friendly. reception staff always quick and friendly. I once went to the counter to have a 10 Cuban peso converted to singles and the guy already had 10 coins in his hand for me. Was disappointed on lack of fish in the beach waters as we have been to other resorts and were amazed[... read more] by the bounty of fish during snorkeling. excursions off the resort went fine. Food was typical Cuban which is good but not exceptional. No disco on the resort which is exactly what we wanted. Nice shows put on in the main reception Hall area. You don't need a bracelet for this resort which is interesting as it has neighbouring resorts on each side. No kids as the resort is adult only although you will see them on the beach from other resorts. Don't bother with the stilt houses on the lake. not much of a view and the rooms are the same and the water can smell bad sometimes although we didn't notice it. They have a 24 hour poolside bar kitchen which is great for those times between buffet openings. Beach is only 50 yards from the pool
All in all we would recommend Melia Cayo Cocoa. Bring lots of sunscreen

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Not as good as last year
The people are amazing and the beaches beautiful. We did pay for the Diamond Club and did not see much difference as people used our lounge chairs and the bar at the beach . When they ran out of beer we had to buy Heineken bottles. They have a Piano bar but unfortunately the only person that played it’ll was a guest. They have no music or disco passed 11pm so not much to do other then drink or eat or go to bed early. Not pleased with Tripcentral either as once we booked the resort the pri[... read more]ce dropped the next day by $100 per person and they were not willing to do anything. Was only told that if we cancel we loose our deposit.

Melia Jardines del Rey: The BAD out weighs the Good
We just got back from Melia Jardines del Rey and I will give you the good first.
Good: beach is amazing, grounds are kept nice from the hard working groundskeepers. Housekeepers are always working to keep main lobby clean. Most of the staff speak good English and are friendly, Roberto in the buffet was awesome greeting us with a smile every morning. The cook making our eggs remembered what we liked each morning. The was always lounge chairs available and shade shelters at beach and pool.
[... read more]
BAD: mosquito's are very bad at dusk and dawn, the first four days they ran out of beer at times through out the day, they only served slush drinks at certain times and certain bars. buffet was pretty much the same every day. Beach towels were hard to get let alone replaced. Customer service was very friendly but not helpful in any way. MOST of all what ruined it for us and a lot of others was No running water for the better part of two days, 12 hrs on the Wednesday and 8 hrs Thursday, couldn't flush a toilet wash your hands.
I hope this review helps
We will never go back

Melia Jardines del Rey: Good Vacation
This was my second time at this Resort and I'm sorry to kind of say that it has gone downhill in a year. The beach was amazing our room was okay the food was not as great this time. The food literally was the same thing for lunch and supper for the whole 7 days that we were there. The drinks were never consistent and they also ran out of beer several times. We were looking so forward to returning to this Resort as we were there before, but we will not be returning to this Resort again.

Gran Muthu Imperial: Outstanding Resort for its early beginning
The Gran Muthu Imperial is the newest of the Muthu resorts (as I understand it), so new, that my partner and I were leery of going but for the amazing discount. It was well worth it.
Location: Great location on Cayo Guillermo, relatively close to the Cayo Coco airport, only an hour or so away. It, however, is far from the mainland, so don't expect an easy drive to the nearby town of Moron. It's only a 10 minute bus ride from Playa Pilar.
Rooms: Outstanding for Cuba standards. The bed w[... read more]as very comfortable, the sheets smooth and clean. The bathroom was excellent, with a large, comfortable rain/wand shower. The lighting was great. The HVAC control was easy to use and very effective. The angle from the side balcony still afforded excellent views of the ocean.
Staff: Very friendly. Excellent use of English. Enthusiastic and courteous, they routinely went out of their way to make our stay memorable. From the maintenance personnel, up to the managers, everyone greeted us with a smile. The cleaning staff were attentive, we never wanted for anything.
Food: Very good food. Several stations to enjoy at the buffet restaurant, in addition to several sit-sown restaurants that catered to a variety of diets and preferences. My partner had no trouble with gluten free options. I cannot comment on the drinks as I don't partake much. Though my partner found their willingness to experiment with different concoctions was dependent on the person serving and how busy they were.
Pools: Clean, expansive and highly enjoyable. The only thing is that the surface texture of the pool tiles varied, so one had to be aware of whether they were slick or gritty. Unfortunately the lounge chair cushions had ties that tore off all too easily.
Entertainment: Highly enjoyable. The daytime activities varied between dance lessons, amusing games, exercise and pool games. Sadly the weather wasn't entirely cooperative, with cool temperatures and very high winds, keeping most people grounded on their chairs. The evening shows were quite entertaining. The dancers were clearly committed to their craft, giving a more than appropriate level of emotional content to their routines.
Beach: I am leaving this for last because for the most part, we didn't make use of it. As previous reviews mentioned, the beach was incomplete. While I found it more than adequate, I am used to swimming off rocks etc. Others, used to a more polished product would find it lacking. The main drawback to the beach was the tremendous degree of litter along the shoreline. That will absolutely need to be addressed.
Overall I would definitely go back if I was of the temperament to re-visit the same locale on subsequent trips.

Hotel Camino del Mar: Rooms were very dated and toilets didn't work properly no hot water for our full time there!
Very disappointing for a Melia. We have stayed in Melia's in Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco (3 times) and were very pleased with these. However because of this one we will not stay at another Melia.
Arrival took for ever, one person on the front desk to check in the 16 guest that arrived.
Toilet wouldn't flush any thing down and there was no hot water. Called 3 times the first night, no one came although they said they were sending someone each time.
Spoke with Carlos (hotel manager) three times[... read more] and all he did was offer excuses for the problems not a solution.
Transat rep (Marieta) was not helpful. Went to tell her our issues and she asked us to come back at 10. Went back and we were asked to come back at 11. Back at 11 and she offered another room (only one was available) or we could upgrade rooms and it would cost us 20-30 cuc per night (for a working toilet and hot water?? - maybe??), or change resorts. We were asked to come back at 1 to see a room. When back and the room wasn't ready for us to look at so were told to come back once again. What a wasted day and the whole thing was an inconvenience!
Ended up changing rooms and had the same issues - toilet wouldn't fully flush and no hot water. Several guest we spoke with said they had the same problems!
The wait staff were very friendly and made our day(s).

Iberostar Origin Playa Pilar: 3 star resort at most
Rooms were dirty and worn. Holes in the walls - unfinished paint - cracks etc. We had a pull out bed for our kids and the mattress didn’t fit. They also didn’t have pillows. Food was decent for Cuba - but not enough selection. Nightly entertainment was terrible - very amateur. Beach was nice
Staff were amazing - kids club girls were amazing

Hotel Camino del Mar: It was good but not great
We like smaller resorts so it suited us well. There were some issues on our arrival like not getting our room for 3/12 hours after check in time. When we did get our room, the key did not work for the door and the safe. And there was no bar fridge in the room. I went back to the front desk and they were going to send someone to fix everything right away. That did not happen that night. So the next morning we had to walk around with our valuables on us and leave our room door unlocked. So, after [... read more]buffet brunch, I was able to get Carlos the manager up to our room and explain our concerns to him. He said to go enjoy the resort and he would have every thing fixed by noon. From there on, we had fun. Carlos, true to his word, addressed all our concerns. On the positive side, the beach is beautiful. As good as any we have seen in Cuba. And we have been to a different Cuban resort for 10 years now. The service and the food is great. Other than the few kinks that had to be worked out, yes, I will put Melia Cayo Guillermo on my list of resorts to return to.

Hotel Camino del Mar: Would not reccomend
After arriving march 20th we found several items not working. No air conditioning in the main buffet area, staff indicated it might be fixed in may. We were on a third floor room with no hot water (no warm either) which was reported every day to front desk staff. After several days we went to front desk and the famous manager Carlos happened to be there and indicated to us that they were having problems with the third floor in regards to hot water. He indicated to please come back the next day a[... read more]t 3 and we would be moved to a nice room with hot water. (each of our days there they said the same thing but when we went to the front desk , there was no rooms available) However in reading all about how efficient Carlos was , we returned to the front desk at 3 the next day ..........and again there was nothing available nor was Carlos working but the front desk again could not help us. After being shuffled around we were finally moved to another room but this time the door handle fell of the door and they were unable to fix the door and we had to move yet again. I finally spoke to the Air Transat rep and she told us she was going to move us to another resort, which she did. She was very helpful and arranged everything for us to go to the MGM Grand Muthu Imperial a short distance away. We discovered we were surely not the only ones transferred to this hotel and there were over 20 guests diverted to this hotel from the Melia Cayo Guillermo.
I would avoid this hotel at all costs , it's run down and appears they do not have the proper people to repair anything at this resort and is in need of a complete make over, if it's possible at all.

Hotel Camino del Mar: Great Resort
Overall the resort is nice and you know it is a mature resort due to the foliage. There was a bit of a delay in getting our room but apparently they were upgrading some of the rooms with new mattresses, linens, drapes, etc. The food was always good and hot. would have liked to see the pool bar manned more often as the lobby bar maintained it and was not always attentive to it. The pool had a liner which I never seen in a resort before. I found them normally tiled or painted. This liner however h[... read more]ad many rips and was lifting and requires replacement/ The highlight of my trip and what I enjoyed the most was the long pier that went out into the ocean. It was such an amazing place to snorkel for fish. People would fish from it and feed pelicans along it. At the end there is a ladder which allows you to dive and swim from the end of it, Loved It. This resort however enjoyable certainly needs some TLC or an upgrading, you can see it's age and areas that over the past 15+ years have deteriorated. The Staff under the direction of Carlos, the manager where top notch. I would love to go back to this resort but likely not until an upgrade was carried out.
