Travelled to Cofresi Palm this past week and We have nothing but good to say about this resort. Never a dull moment here with many entertainers keeping everyone happy and always games being played. Chihuahua and Blackie whom are 2 entertainers there were the best. The buffet and A la carts food was Also great. I would definitely recommend this Resort.

Riu Merengue: You get what you pay for!!
Ok lets start from the beginning and work our way to the end. First off the check in was easy and the hotel was able to accommodate our room request for a room on the ground floor and close to most hotel amenities. The room had a slight musty smell, but it was not that bad and my wife and I got over it real fast.
The beds were a bit lumpy but we were able to sleep on them. I found one cock roach on day 2 of the vacation in the room which soon became fast friends with the business end o[... read more]f a sandal. ( I kept my eyes open for the remainder of the stay and did not find anymore, nor did I tell my wife until we returned home!!)
The grounds are nice and the staff were constantly working and seemed very happy. The beach was fair but the sand fleas were very active and fell in love with my legs.( still itchy as heck ) Lots of lounge chairs at pool and at beach.
The food was not as good as I was expecting for a 4 or 4.5 star depending on the site you looked at. I was able to usually find one or 2 items each meal that was not that bad.
For the a la cartes we went to the Steak House and that was disappointing. My steak was to be a medium well and it was well done and tough as old heck.
The bars were clean and the drinks were not that bad. The bartenders were very friendly and service was excellent.
The maid service was excellent as well and no complaints can I make about that.
The on site activities were the norm for the Dominican. The team were friendly and approachable.
Check out was as easy and painless as the check in process which was nice.
Overall it was not the worst experience of my life, but I would not return to this resort.

Blue Bay Villas Doradas: Good Value for Money
We booked this resort last minute, but were originally looking to go to Jamaica. We couldn't find anything there for 2 weeks at a reasonable price and then struck out in Punta Cana as well, which we have been to 6 times. We managed to find a 2 week deal at a very affordable price in Puerto Plata at the Blue Bay Villa Doradas. Our first impression was that the resort looks a little tired and dated. Parts of the resort such as rooms, pools and tiles around the pool are in need of updating and [... read more]repair. When we looked at pictures of the resort on-line it showed that there were palapas at the beach. There were instead Bali beds and pergolas with some white cloth on them. Most of the cloth was ripped and did not cover the pergolas very well, so my wife and I only spent 1 day at the beach. We like palapas because they allow you to be out of the direct sun but still get a tan. Saying all that we still managed to enjoy ourselves during our stay.
The food was very good at the resort, we always enjoyed our meals at the buffet. The three a la carte restaurants were exceptional. The wait staff were very friendly and the extra touches throughout the meal made our evening's very special. We read some reviews prior to going down and there were some people that complained about the food. Some people must be extremely fussy. The three a la carte restaurants are the seafood, steak and chinese. The seafood was our favorite.
The animation team were extremely busy throughout the day and evening. There were events going on every hour starting at 9AM. We especially liked Chocolatè who always brought a smile to our face.
The resort is a small adults only resort so it is a short walk to the lobby and buffet or to the a la carte restaurants at the beach. The beach is very wide and we enjoyed our walks every day. You can walk around the pennisula heading north and west and easily go for a one hour walk. The water was a beautiful green and was nice and warm for swimming. The sand is a different color than the beaches at Punta Cana, but it is still a nice beach.
The room was outdated but functional. It could stand to have had a dresser as there was limited space to put clothes that didn't need to be hung up. The bathroom was roomy and functional, unfortunately the water pressure in the shower was pretty weak and there were 3 occasions where we had to shower in cold water. The bed was very comfy and even though I suffer from a bad back, I woke up feeling refreshed every morning.
Pretty much everyone we talked to during our stay made the same comment as to why they chose the Blue Bay Villas Doradas, the low price. One couple we met has been going there for more than 20 years and still love going back 2 weeks every year. If you can overlook some of the small issues than this resort is definitely value for your money.

VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort: Much, much more than we expected!
This resort far exceeded our expectations in all aspects. The food was wonderful, hot and varied in the buffet! The Ocean Grill food was exceptional! This resort was so clean and the staff, from the gardener to the front desk and everyone in between, were so friendly and helpful. Our room designation was mixed up and the front desk quickly corrected it AND gave us ocean view to compensate for our troubles. The beach was clean, and very close to everything! We had a wonderful time at VH Gran Vent[... read more]ana and would go back in a minute! Special thanks to Amber the Zumba lady for her welcoming smile each day! Loved it!

Bahia Principe Grand San Juan: Wonderful Experience
I was skeptical about going to this resort from seeing the reviews, however, id like to say I had the best experience here. The food, entertainment, the beautiful resort itself, makes me want to live there. I just want to thank the staff for their hard work and postive vibes all throughout the days I stayed. I recommend!

Bahia Principe Grand San Juan: You have to go here!
This resort is amazing. I had such a great time. All of the staff on the resort are very helpful and friendly and fun. The only thing I didn't like were the beds, they were too hard otherwise everything was terrific. The food was delicious, the tour guide was great and told us so much about the history of the island. I would definitely recommend this resort.

Viva Heavens by Wyndham: Unsure
it was a nice hotel, the food was decent but not a lot of selections. no grill station for fish, meat, shrimps, only pasta day after day.
We went to the Italian by the beach it was disgusting the fish was raw and chicken had a bad taste to it, very disappointed after reading the reviews.
the people were nice but some were very touchy and some actions were not acceptable slapping girld on their ass and splashing peole rudly at the foam party wasnt necessary alot of people got pissed off and we [... read more]had to tell them to stop.

Marien Puerto Plata Hotel: Great resort!!!
It was a smaller resort but still had plenty of chairs by the pool or the beach. The rooms were clean, the pool was very clean and the food was very good. The beach was nice and you could walk a long way to the right.
My only complaint would be arriving at the resort at 10:30am and not having a room until the check-in time of 3pm. It is not really convenient and I'm not sure if it is this way at every resort, I know this is the rule at hotels, but it would definitely be better to have a room [... read more]ready upon arrival. We still made the best of our time, left our luggage at the entrance (at own risk) and went to the pool area, which is closer to the hotel lobby.
Besides that...good times. We were 8 and we all ate very well, no one was sick and we all had fun.

Riu Merengue: Nice Resort poor service.
It was fair. The food was better than when we visited in 2012. We thought the service was lacking this time. Also we found a huge cockroach in our room our third night as well in the public washrooms I saw them running around.

VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort: Overall Good Experience
My boyfriend and I went to the VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort from April 21-28, 2017. We had a great time, but not all turned out as we had expected. The hotel itself is beautiful, the staff was on top of everything and very friendly and they keep every location around the resort clean. Our room had a King sized bed (Premium Suite), was cleaned daily by the maids and water and towels restocked. We also got a thrid floor room by the quite pool which was nice due to the loud entertainment in the oth[... read more]er section of the resort at later hours. The only issues with our room was the bathroom sink leaked around it when you turned the water on for any length of time and would drip onto the floor. This was annoying. We also had a day where a pipe had broke in the building and caused us not to have water in the shower. The front desk gave us a key to another room to go shower in and it was back on by that evening. The balcony view looked out to a field with a beautiful mountainous background.
The safe cost an extra $16 which was a bit annoying, as they should just include it in the cost of the vacation. The theater area of the resort offers free wifi, but is very slow and does not always want to connect. I ended up purchasing the wifi for around $45 Canadian for the week, which made it so I could connect anywhere on the resort. The only annoying thing with that was when you "lock" your phone and then go back in, sometimes the wifi disconnects and you have to go through your web browser and put the password credentials back in.
They do a good job with daily activities and entertainment! I did the water Zumba class with Amber and she is fantastic and energetic at it. She really gets you moving with a smile! The pool entertainment throughout the day was always funny, entertaining and engaging with people. The staff do a good job at rounding people up to participate! You can also do daily Bingo, dance lessons and watch a nightly show. In our case, we ended up doing Karaoke, that was fun!
The food was of a wide variety, but this is where I (and my boyfriend), but mostly I had many issues. I have many food allergies (mainly milk) and so not knowing what was in things was a struggle. I went for foods that were seemingly safe, but ended up with a lot of upset stomach issues throughout the trip. We found it better to eat almost more unhealthy while there (fries, burgers, bread, fruits, fajitas) versus the vegetables and salads, as they seemed to upset us the most. We both had one full day wrote off due to our stomach and felt off the remainder of the days! We also found this caused us unable to drink, which was half the excitement of doing an all exclusive trip, so this was very frustrating and disappointing.
The beach is nice, theres quite a bit of sea weeds that floats by if the wind picks up but it wasn't too much of an issue! The beach was also very busy and windy so we mainly lounged by the pool. The pool area fills up very quickly in the mornings so you want to make sure you get out and put your towels on a chair so that spot is claimed!
The weather was weird while we were here, we picked the wrong time to go I guess. The first 4 days we had nothing but over cast and off and on light rain everyday. The remaining 3 full days we had left we got sun, so at least we got some....
Overall, when discussing this trip with my boyfriend on the way home, we decided other than our issues with the food, this was a fabulous place to stay. There were some flaws with the bathroom and such, but you get what you pay for for $1,200! The staff was really responsive, very polite, very friendly and very quick to get you what you need. They had staff cleaning up empty cups, sweeping anything up off the ground and tidying chairs to make sure it was clean. For the price we paid for this trip, we feel it was worth it!

VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort: Not bad, more of a 3 star
Oor weather was not the greatest the week we were there, April 17-24th, 2017. It rained on and off all week and the beach was really rough and windy. The food was very good. The staff was very nice. The pool was quite dirty...cigarettes butts and empty water balloons etc. wasn't quite a 4.5-5 star in my opinion. Nothing fancy. Had some problems with our toilet and shower. We asked for a main floor room, near the pool, I believe. We got a third floor room at the back with only a view of the balco[... read more]nies of other rooms.the entertainment wasn't too bad.

Riu Merengue: Enjoy this resort
We enjoyed this resort for it's beautiful landscaping and long palm tree covered beach. No shortage of good selections at the buffets. Love the architectural detailing on the public buildings (lobbies, bars etc). Disappointed that the Merengue bar painted over it's original yellow details with all white, but still pretty. Improvements could be made by upgrading the room and safe keys, and more importantly - there are not enough pools, especially in Merengue section!
