One of the best yet!!!

the check in was easy, we were late arrivals, given a room in the dark, and off to the town to calle 62 for the evening. the next morning, we were put on a list for an upgrade room , and received it by 200pm that day. the buffet was ample for us, as no need for a la carte. there was plenty of variety and we were spoiled by everyone. VERY POOR

This resort was horrible, the bathrooms disgusting to accompany no hot water and no water pressure. They didn't have the common sense to clean their beach at night and their beach chairs are dirty, worn and torn. The buffet is one of the poorest I have ever endured in Cuba

Very nice location and a very nice beach!!

One delihtful thing!! One morning a Colobri came flying to me on the 4th floor. The gardner who was watering the Plant Wall showed us the bird's nest. Every morning we had a pleasure of to find out if she was in or out!!! The best feature of this hotel is the food. so many variety and abundance. Nightly shows were very well done. It was good that we can use next door Arenas Blancas. I think that the maintenance of the building was rather poor . Very nice resort

I have been to this Hotel many times but this time it was no good. oh the service was very good and clean but the maintenance was very poor. every second Day there was no hot Water, the Pool bar the Boards were full of holes you had to watch were you walked there was many more. I was there 2 years ago and it was not like that. But we had a good time.

Disappointed

This resort is showing its age. We stayed there Jan 23-30, 2015. I would rate it a 3 star, not 4. We were in the "nicer" bungalow room. The furnishings were spartan. It had 3 double beds with cheap firm mattresses, no comfortable chairs, a 20" CRT television with no remote (complained at the front desk but no remote was delivered). Barcelo Solymar

Went last year fantastic. This year the resort was a party place for lots of rude vulgar spitting French young adults. What raised these people is beyond me. This was to be a relaxing trip and turned out to be far from it . The local people and staff were great they were just unable to do anything about disrespectful young adults.

Bad choice for the kids first time away

The hotel and grounds weren't bad, except for not having running water several days. It's not as nice as the Breezes places in Cuba we have stayed, but not horrible (I've been to Cuba 10 different times). Front desk staff were terrible. Very rude, expect to wait 20 minutes before anyone helps, even then, it's no, no, no. No internet cards, no water, don't know when it will be back on, no you cant have side by side rooms with your family, no money exchange half the time. Its really a drunk 20 something resort, don't bring your family here. 14 and 15 yr old girls with us were terrified and harassed by drunk guys constantly. They couldn't go anywhere alone. LOUD music blaring until 1am every single night. Woke up to cigarette butts and urine and spilled drinks in the hallways every morning. Smoking inside everywhere, lobby, buffet, restaurants,not ok with kids around. Food was good, beach was beautiful, though VERY crowded, the middle pool was our oasis. I felt really bad for the kids, so we stayed away from the resort as much as possible. Luckily it was close to town and we could go explore. We didn't let it ruin our vacation, but our travel agent got an email when we got home to never book families there again, so inappropriate.

Beautiful venue

Grounds were stunning. staff was amazing, hotel could use a paint job and a little updating. The best part of the resort is its location! it is so nice to be able to walk Verodaro beach either way you want!

Great for partying

The hotel is perfect if you want to party! The beach is absolutely stunning. Only bad part is the lack of fresh towels and cleanliness of the rooms. Right downtowm location so ypu can walk to the bars

Convenient locatiom

looking for a place to walk besides the beach. walked everyday downtown and back. front counter staff very helpful. food what can I say cuba food. stayed in bungalow very nicely located away from main hotel

"Remember it's Cuba"

All in all a good trip, I think you have to remember where you are. I have stayed in Arenas Blancas before it was Barceló and it is still a fine resort. We where there late November I guess it was a bad time of the year it was windy and the red flag on beach was allways up but cant control the weather. The one thing I was not impressed with was I had money missing from my room, now I did leave it out of the safe by accident. So a word to the wise lock up all valuables.

Average Cuban hotel

Decent hotel with edible food, standard drinks, close to town. All the beaches in Veradero are beautiful! Don't go to Cuba to be wined and dined, but if you enjoy the beach, and can overlook the small stuff, and week is more than enough. Slightly better than other Varadero hotels I've stayed: 4 Palms, Barlovento, Punterana (don't go)

Good resort

Nice friendly resort. Staff and room service were great. Rooms and food were decent. Great entertainment. Beaches were beautiful. And only a short walk away from Havana club, the Beatles etc. Would go back :)

Never again

Never again never again ... Horrible service ... Horrible food ... Horrible staff .. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Do yourself a favour and do not go to this place because it was the worst experience of our lives.

DO NOT STAY AT SOLYMAR!!

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL! Extremely bad service and a lot of noise! I just returned from Varadero on Nov 3rd. Please do yourself a favour and pick another hotel. There are a ton of other hotels to choose from. BAD SERVICE – trust the reviews when you read that the Solymar has bad service. I took those reviews with a grain of salt because Im a pretty low maintenance person; so coming from a low maintenance person this place has bad service! It started with check-in. The agent asked for my pas [... read more]sport and voucher. In the 3 seconds it took for me to get my documents she started to serve someone else. Not just one person, she served 3 or 4 people until I finally said “are you planning on coming back?”. Anytime I was at the bar the service was awful. Others would routinely get served before me. One time I ordered a beer at one end of the bar and instead of the bartender bringing me my drink he left it at the other end of the bar for me to go pick up. Now for the worst part, in the dining room, not at any time did any waiter come to my table to offer my water, tea, wine or anything! I was in there 5 times and each time I was getting my own drinks. I do believe that was racially driven as I’m Black and was the only Black person there. I watched as other guests were receiving table side service. The service in the dining room improved only after I complained to both the dining room manager and the hotel manager. I shouldn’t have to complain in order to get proper service. What is frustrating is that I choose that hotel. I didn’t just book the cheapest trip. Do yourself a favor and skip this hotel (especially if you’re Black!) It’s not worth it. You can find another hotel with better service and less noise. LOUD - My other complaint is it is quite loud with super young drunk people. I can deal with noise and rowdiness but this seemed over the top. My first night, I was awoken by drunken yelling outside my room at 4am. The next day I asked to switch to a quieter part of the hotel only to be told that I was already in the quietest part! In fairness, I will state what I did like. Although it was kind of far from the beach, the overall location is good and walking distance to the 2 main clubs in Varadero – Havana Club and Calle 62. I also thought it was aesthetically a nice hotel and room. But that said, there are plenty of other nice hotels with better service out there.

Average hotel

The hotel is in a good location for walking distance into town where you will meet wonderful people. The room was clean but dated and the food was half decent, during our stay a lot of the hotel was shut down due to renovations. The hotel setup is not ideal as it's hard to find a good spot to sit and enjoy a drink, we spent most of our time in town and only slept at the resort .

Awesome resort

the grounds were kept up, pool was great, food has improved front desk staff not very friendly lobby entertainment was better, and animation team was good for Cuban entertainers. Public relations people were amazing

Very good resort

The food Was very good. The staff was veryshopping market and and the beach was excellent. The location was in close.proximity to varedero City. We took a horse drawn buggy to the shopping area. It was a great way to see the sights. The entertainment at the hotel was top class as well as in the city. The Beatles bar was a hoot! I had an amazing vacation and i can't wait to return.

Great resort!

Everything was great, hotel, room, food, people, beach, pool, lobby, reception, hotel is 5 minutes walking distance from downtown Varadero, the bank is right beside Arenas Blancas.. I would go back to the same resort again

Amazing Time!!

Front desk staff were extremely slow, not a very customer service oriented place, you really need to be persistent with the staff if you need something but if you don't depend on them it's AMAZING!!!!
