The hotel is very well designed and close to all amenities. The beach was very nice the room clean and fonctionnal. Food was repetitive but ok for Cuba. The best service we add is in the lobby was amazing in the restaurant buffet they need a training we dont need water in morning we need coffee ! it take sometime 10 min before having a coffee served it is s small things but need to ne adjust because some did amazing service and some terrible.. by the way the BBQ lunch it is a desaster!! People w[... read more]ere like salvage we needed to almost fight to eat that day. Terrible too bad because it is rate 5 stars i would give 4 but that day not even 2 . I understand that Cuban witch i respect ...but for traveller thèses attitudes of no respect and take all on the buffet,.. put on tbe table just for wast and taking full plate of what ever was on the buffet was a big unreasonable for the other guests.
Overall good experience and would go back.

Great place
Absolutely beautiful resort. Wonderful staff and service, good drinks, great pools and beach and grounds and rooms- no complaints there. Food was surprisingly subpar (been on a ton of Cuban trips) but I never went hungry. Thanks for a great stay.

Amazing resort!!!
This was a great resort. The best resort yet I have visited in cuba so far.
It was amazingly super clean everywhere all the time. The employees were exceptionally polite and always ready to help you in any way. The pools were great, the beach was so peaceful and beautiful. I was very happy with this vacation. I give it a 10 on 10. I would certainly revisit this resort in the future for sure.

Grand Muthu Hotel
Grounds well maintained. Room very clean and large with a king bed. Buffet restaurant was clean with very helpful staff. There were good choices for food. A lot of mango every day. The pool area restaurant is open 24 hours with three choices hotdog, burger or sandwich. If you like espresso cafe then lobby bar and pool area restaurant have the espresso. machines. The only complain : I wish they will find a way to make more shade available around the pool area.

4.75 Stars in Paradise
I have just returned from a 2 week stay at Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo. Of all the sun destination resorts I gave been to, this is my favourite. Depending on my work schedule, I am hoping to return for a week in December.
GOOD THINGS:
- Excellent service in all public areas of the resort.
- Outlets everywhere, including on the balcony and on both sides of the bed. Outlets at this resort fit Canadian plugs, but the voltage may be different, so check your charger before you go to make sure it[... read more] can work with 110-240 volt input.
- Wifi works throughout the resort (1.50 CUC for an hour) including in the rooms and at the pool. I didn’t try it at the beach.
- Plenty of towels in the room. The beach towel supply was replenished about 3 times per day. The hut occasionally ran out, but a new supply was always there as soon as they came out of the dryer.
- Great showerheads and strong water pressure. I was easily able to rinse my long hair properly.
- The reception desk also functions as the Cadeca (money exchange), so it’s available 24 hours.
- Fast, efficient check-in, even late at night. Our plane was over 2 hours late, and when we got to the resort they had already assigned all of our room numbers and programmed the door keys, so all we had to do was sign the paperwork and head to our rooms.
- Beautiful clean grounds, beach, and pool.
- Pool water chemistry was checked several times a day. They did have to close the infinity pool twice during my 2 week stay in order to clean it properly.
- Very good food. I could always find several items that I liked at the buffet.
- The Indian a la carte is excellent.
- Snack Bar and Lobby Bar open 24 hours.
- All public furniture, including beach and pool chairs, was very good quality and comfortable.
- All of the service vehicles and trucks are electric, so there was almost no noise, and there were no fumes.
- No one at the resort attempted to sell me anything, or tried to convince me to upgrade to any special services.
THINGS THAT COULD BE IMPROVED:
- Not enough shade. I prefer the beach, but stopped going because there were not enough palapas for all the people who wanted shade. As the sun moved, the shade moved, but those new shady places were already occupied. At the pool there were only 5 or 6 functional umbrellas for the 100 or so loungers and Bali beds. The Umbrellas were often damaged by the wind, so I think they need stronger (and lots more) umbrellas.
- As others have mentioned, my shower leaked all over the bathroom. The leaks appear to be at the bottom, near the metal brackets that attach the glass to the marble sill. However, because there were plenty of towels in the room, I was always able to mop up the spill.
- The only garbage bin in the rooms is a small plastic garbage container in the bathroom, which in Cuba is used for used toilet paper (in most places in Cuba the pipes can’t handle a lot of flushed paper). There was nowhere inside the building for me to put items for recycling and other non-compostable garbage, which I didn’t want to contaminate with the bathroom garbage.
- If you want to be sure that visitors don’t flush the toilet paper, there needs to be information posted about this in the bathrooms. Visitors who are new to Cuba will probably not know this, as in Canada, USA, and UK, we flush the toilet paper.
- The patio furniture on most of the balconies is too flimsy for use by large adults. (Similar to the white plastic chairs we can get when on sale in Canada for $5 each). I could see that on a few of the balconies this furniture had been replaced with higher-quality beige plastic wicker.
- The coffee and tea in the room was not replaced daily, so even though there is a coffee machine in each room, there is no coffee or tea to make in the morning. I complained about this twice (after 3 days I had used up the 1 pack of coffee, and the 2 teabags that were there when I checked in). After the second complaint, the items were replenished once, and never again, so after 3 days again there was nothing left. I didn’t bother complaining again, as I was on holiday and this was merely a minor annoyance to me. I resorted to getting a cappuccino at the snack bar, which is open 24 hours and wasn’t too far from my room.
- Instead of coffee or tea, I started drinking one soda a day. Sometimes the 1 soda was replaced in the fridge. Sometimes it wasn’t.
- One day they didn’t replenish the almost-gone toilet paper.
THANKS TO EXCELLENT STAFF:
Absolutely everyone that I interacted with in person was excellent. I can’t possibly mention everyone, but here are a few:
- Eiser taught me to play Connect Four. I’m pretty sure he let me win a few times so I wouldn’t feel too bad about losing constantly.
- Yaseni (sorry if I’ve misspelled your name) at the towel hut cheerfully exchanged my sopping towel every day.
- Helen taught me to dance a few steps of salsa.
- Pedro provided excellent service at tennis and boxing.
- Danay and Helen improved my Spanish vocabulary.
- Liannys at breakfast, and Sandra at dinner (as well as the whole service team) always kept my preferred beverages refreshed.
- The servers at the pool bar remembered that I preferred ice water and that I don’t want a straw.
- The lifeguards, pool attendants, gardeners, and maintenance staff always said hello.
For me, this was two weeks in paradise, and I will definitely return.

Not impressed
Stayed at Grand Muthu in Cayo Guillermo in June for 7 days. The resort itself looks great. Everything is new. 3 big pools to choose from, lots of lounge chairs (of course, it was low season),but the layout wasn't great. The villas are so spread out, depending on which one you stay at, you might have a lot of walking to do. We were in Villa 2 which was connected to the lobby, right next to the buffet and most of the ala carte's. And our patio was close to the pools, so we definitely lucked out.
[... read more]
The best parts:
Amazing bartenders. The coffee bar in the lobby made amazing cappuccinos, and if you sat down they were at your table right away to see if you needed a drink. The swimup bar had 3 bartenders that rotated. All 3 were awesome. Great service, always on top of things...especially Dani. Sweetest guy I met there.
There was a snack bar opened for lunch and they made a huge pot of Cuban stew (so good!), and a mojito bar, and the food wasn't horrible.
...and that's it. The rest was a disaster. It's low season so the day before we flew out we received an email that the buffet would be closed for lunches. Which left the 24hr snack bar. The snack bar that ran out of food all day, and half the time told us they just weren't serving food. One day we were told we couldn't use the ketchup and the server picked it up off our table and gave it to another table...and that was after waiting for over an hour for a couple hot dogs and fried to feed 4 kids under 5. The snack bar had ice cream in the afternoon...but it was usually just an empty tub. They had menus but didn't give them out because if they were making food, it was usually just hot dogs and ham and cheese sandwiches. I figured we'd at least eat better at the ala carte's...tried Indian, Italian and Seafood. They had great reviews. The seafood wasn't too bad, but they only were serving half the menu. Italian was pretty good, but also only serving half the menu (they didn't have tomatoes to make most of the food they offered). Indian was horrible. There's no menu so they service fish and chicken only until they run out and then you only get beef. All of which tasted horrible.
The buffet was...eh. But because it's low season they only fill half of it. So there isn't much to choose from....and they run out of everything so if you eat something one day, you probably won't see it for the rest of the week. I know it's Cuba and the
The entertainment staff spent a lot of time complaining about all the hours they worked...then spent most of it hiding in corners on their cell phones or sitting with guests asking for clothes for them, their kids, their nieces and nephews...everyday. I don't mind if someone asks or hints but EVERYDAY?!?! On the weekend there were so many locals staying at the resort, the entertainment staff just stopped speaking English all together so we had no idea what they were doing, what games were being played...
There was a lot of rain one night and our room started flooding. We went to the front desk for towels and they refused to give us any.
There's a kids pool with a slide/play structure in it which I thought was great...until I realized that the ground is rough and scratched my sons feet so bad the first day that he couldn't go to the beach for a couple days.
Oh, and our patio door was left unlocked by the maid 3 of the 6 days she was in the room...good thing we used the safe....which broke on day 3 and we had to use my friends safe.
Never going back...which is sad because I heard such good things about Cayo Guillermo and it was our first time there.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!
I travelled to this resort the week of June 8-15,2018. It was myself,my husband 7 month old baby, and friend with her 5 year old. We were all super excited as the reviews were so great and this was the first time I read good reviews for food in Cuba.(I have been 9 times).
IT WAS AWFUL! The food every day was the exact same thing like literally the exact same mon-sunday. The al a cartes were garbage especially the Indian..Italian was mediocre at best. The 24 hour snack bar was only open from 1[... read more]0am until 6pm...when buffet was open it was closed. I totally get its low season but you cant cut these kind of corners when you have already taken away so many other things because of the low season you should lower your prices or not advertise the 24 hr snackbar if that's the case. I think the worst was the amount of local people who came in and were ignorant rude and acted like the world was ending and it was every man for themselves. Now I'm not saying locals shouldn't travel and I have always said Cubans are the most polite people I have ever met,but certainly not here, at one point a man took the ice cream scoop out of my hand before I had even started serving myself and friends child I was apalled and thought it was absolutely disgusting. Once food was gone it was rarely replenished. The beach was not your typical beautiful Cuban beach you could not see the bottom and there was a lot of seaweed, this the reason everyone
Goes to playa pillar for the day(added expense when you have paid for the beach already buy booking the trip as you have to pay for umbrellas or tan chairs). The rooms were nice the hotel itself was beautiful, pools were great and Dani at the swim up bar was incredible but that's it. The rest of the staff would sit around tell us how hard they were worked, Skex for things (my daughter's clothing) when we leave and to not give or leave anything to the maids. The lifeguard
Actually asked us to buy him some cigars because he cNt afford them. Even the management wasn't the greatest we had a huge thunderstorm and our room started to flood as we were on the main floor...they hesitated giving us extra towels to help keep the water out ...like are you kidding me? It passed fairly quickly so we ended up being ok but they definitely lacked hospitality.
This was our first trip with our baby and it was ruined. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS RESORT!
I hope that readers think twice!! maybe in the higher season its great I cannot say,but I would not reccomend this place in the low for sure.

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo
Grounds, public areas, room: very neat and clean. Beach: very beautiful, clean, sandy, water clear and shallow, can walk out very far out the ocean. So little guests, can count maybe 10 people in the water most times, and people leave the beach at 4 pm, so staff started putting away lounge chairs at around 4:30, so sad, such a beautiful beach and no one stays past 5 pm. Dining service: perhaps due to cancellation of Cubana Airlines, not a lot of guests (I guestimate 100), buffet restaurant was[... read more] closed for lunch on the 4th day for the remainder of our stay. We had to eat at the other two less desirable restaurants. On the last day we were there, we were advised that buffet breakfast will also be closed. This I cannot ascertain because we were leaving. With regard to service at restaurant, I brought this to the attention of the restaurant manager. Staff are slow to serve beverages, beer, water or pop even though we waited for more than 5 minutes. I had orange juice only for 2 days and no juice was available for the remainder of our stay. Staff were very eager to take our plates away. Constantly coming over to ask "are you finished?". I had to finally tell them "when I'm finished, I'll put down my fork and knife and get up, then you can take my plate away. No need to keep asking me." I met someone there who said they took away her plate even though she told them she had not finished yet. We visited our favourite Resort Melia Cayo Guillermo to fish off their pier. Cubana Airlines cancellation didn't seem to affect that resort. There were lots of people in the resort as well as the beach. We have been to other resorts in Cuba for the past 10 years, and we know we don't go to Cuba for food, but the food and dining service in Grand Muthu are less than desirable. Safety issue: at night, path lights leading to our building at oceanfront were not lit. Only the lights on the ground floor along the corridor of our building were, lights on the 2nd and 3rd floors corridors were not switched on. And we were on the 3rd floor. We felt unsafe as we have never seen a security guard at night, unless the compound has cameras, but we are not aware of them. We had to run fast to our room, get in and quickly lock the door behind us.

Not so Grand: no live Cuban musicians
Pluses: infinity pool, nice rooms, decent beach and not far from Playa Pilar (one of the best beaches in the world), beautiful gardens, flowers, etc. Several pools to choose from and comfortable lobby. Decent showers, good upkeep of rooms.
Negatives: Food could be improved on and the lack of live Cuban musicians was a great disappointment. Service uneven: sometimes excellent and sometimes lackadaisical.
The absence of live Cuban entertainment may be because of low season but is enough to[... read more] discourage any idea of returning. Food quality should be upgraded as well.

Missed probably the one of our BEST Trip because of an emergency Surgery!
Unfortunately I missed this trip. I’m sure I’m not the first and won’t be the last who had to miss a trip due to an unexpected emergency. I've been a loyal customer each year but I feel as I'm not treated fairly.
As I have done every year around this same week, I planned ahead for this very important vacation and chose the two most trusted companies, Air Transat and Tripcentral. I paid for our trip through Tripcentral and contacted the resort managers with our requests.
We go away e[... read more]ach year during the same time to celebrate my birthday on May 12th, mother’s day which always lands on the second Sunday, and our wedding anniversary on the 14th. I unfortunately was unable to celebrate either of those this year. On May 8th I was rushed into the Hospital and had to be admitted for an emergency surgery.
Our daughter contacted Tripcentral and gave them all of our information. Their agent, Candice asked my daughter for a doctor’s note to follow up with Transat Holidays. Our daughter rushed to get a note from the surgeon, and emailed Candice as soon as she received it. Candice told us that based on Transat Holidays email to her, she cannot help because we paid ahead everything with cash and didn't purchase extra insurance.
They do a lot of advertisements, radio contests etc. and give away free trips for unknown people but how about if one of their loyal customer runs into trouble? They turn their back on them? I guess neither of those big companies has enough surpluses to offer any help like just some portions in vouchers or whatever just to be nice making a good day in a bad situation.....
In the hospital I checked the Resort's daily updated beautiful pictures and the great feedbacks. We really missed that trip!
I would like to maintain a good relationship with Air Transat & Tripcentral as we still plan to take vacations least once a year. I'm sure we have many years left for vacations. I would like to see if there is anything they will or try to do, as this was an emergency situation that we did not plan for, nor would ever expect.
Not only did we go through so much stress in the last few weeks, we also lost out on a great trip and was told we could only get back $60 for the two of us combined. What are we supposed to do with $60? The trip was almost $2100. I was incredibly disappointed that we weren't even able to switch the vacation into someone else’s name (like my daughter, for instance), or offered a credit via voucher. We felt that there wasn't any effort put into trying to help us. We also weren't asked if we would be able to reschedule the trip for a later time.
I guess humanity is lost for old customers but I would appreciate it if someone looked into this matter further for us. We spent a lot of money, and are not really satisfied with the outcome.
Thank you
Attila the HUN.

Very beautiful resort
We visited this resort from April 29th - may 6, we had a very relaxing vacation, the hotel wasn’t at full capacity so no big line ups or lack of pool chairs. We chose to go to the beach in the afternoon, and had lots of shade available, the rooms spacious and great views of the ocean. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. I would return to this resort.

Nice spot!
Great service. Beautiful beach. Clean rooms. Saw dolphins off the beach by infinity pool. Wonderful live entertainment each night, with less Cuban more standard songs. Greeted by dancers and a cocktail upon arrival late evening.
One issue is the garbage along the beach in front of the large gazebo and infinity pool. Water bottles, plastics and even an old piece of boat. I suggest they have one staff person walk the beach each day and do a cleanup.
Took a bus to Pilar beach. Worth it!

Fresh new beach resort
Very clean hotel rooms with great whisper soft air conditioning unit. The bar and desk staff spoke excellent english and were friendly and happy to assist in any way possible.
The landscaping around will mature in time and workers were kept quite busy with this. The pools and swim up bar were lovely but what popped out was the view out into the pool area right out to the beautiful aqua ocean as you walked through the main lobby !!!
Wi-fi often a problem and even with purchased internet cards t[... read more]he system was down.

Good
The Grand Mathu resort is well laid out, rooms and maid service is top notch. Three pools plus a children's pool are great.
Ramps for the handicap is available in most areas.
However getting to the beach is a bit of a problem and once there the sand is very gritty, water shoes are recommended.
The food at this resort is not 5 star quality, we have vested Cuba
14 times and have had better food at a 4 star resort.

Resort is not ready to accommodate full guest capacity
We had a lot of issues with shortage of hot and cold water on peak times. We ended up showering in the courtesy showers on the mail floor as there was no water in our room
Need to add more umbrellas for shade in the pool area and they should use the umbrellas that are not used in the court yard
Entertainment is good some evenings but not others. The Aqua Ballet show was amazing
Not enough food selection even for Cuba and the beef meat was very tough
We reported the water issues to managemen[... read more]t every day and nothing was done about it. They continued to say that they will look into it but nothing happened. We had a 9am appointment with the water technician in our room and they never showed and they never called us to indicate that they will not make the appointment

Resort has water issues
This hotel opened early March and based on one weed there (April 17 -24) it is obvious that there is not enough hot water to accommodate all the guests at early evening rush hours. It also did not have cold water at different times during the mornings.
The pools are very nice but not enough shade. We understand that the trees have not grown yet but they should add umbrellas in the mean time. There were 14 umbrellas not used in the entertainment court yard and these should be moved to the pool [... read more]area
The beach is very nice but again not enough shade and the shade that they have built is too big for 2 loungers so small shading may allow for more shading space
Food was not for a 4.5 hotel rating even for Cuba. Not enough selection and the line ups for food preparation were long especially at the pasta station
