The resort was top notch for Cuba also the food was top notch for Cuba. A good time for young and old. To be completely honest I may actually repeat this resort. Staff were good especially when you are good to them.

Melia Buenavista: Hidden Gem - Indeed
Hubby & I spent one week at Melia Buenavista early May. Is advertised as a "hidden gem", and it is.
Staff are very friendly, helpful, attentive & prompt. Grounds are well kept & attractive.
Our suite on the second floor with view of the middle (of the 3 beaches), was beautiful and clean, without any musty smells one often encounters in hot climates. Water pressure was very good also and it had a working safe in the walk-in closet.
Beaches to die for! The main one goes on forever, along the[... read more] turquoise water with beautiful fish and pelicans.
Restaurants (two) plus breakfast & lunch buffet/restaurant served nice portioned (not too big) delicately flavoured meals. Good variety of fruits, cheese, cold meats and fish.
Musical entertainment at the bar every evening.
Would have liked some additional form of entertainment/show, pool tables and somewhere to dance, however, realize it is a small resort.
Also, the drive from the airport is 1 1/2 hours long, and goes through wonderful landscapes, but also through small towns and communities that clearly show the poverty that is everywhere in this country. :-(
But overall, a very good and relaxing vacation.
An amazing vacation! This was our 10 time in this resort and it was great. Rooms are spacious and very clean (we prefer Luna side), and even though they are a bit outdated, they are very comfortable. Food was as always very tasty - from buffet to beach restaurant to a la carte restaurants - lots of choices. My fave is a Beach restaurant (Mediterranean) with their yummy lunch shrimp. Spa was fantastic, massage really relaxing and whirlpool nice and warm. Beach is out of this world - aside fro[... read more]m Paradisus Rio d’Oro, this is the only resort on the Esmeralda beach - best beach in Holguin, and possibly in all Cuba. From swimming, snorkelling, katarmaran rides to fishing and early morning walks - this is remarkable beach. So now - why did I name this review: Home away from home? Because every time I see the roof of Mares side on our way to resort I feel like I’m coming home. Staff at this resort cares about their guests and goes over and beyond their jobs to make your stay one to remember. Thanks to Irina, Yanet, Ronald, Lilly, Giaccomo, and many more, you will always want to come back.

Paradisus Varadero: Great Beach!
We were happy with a number of things about this resort, but still shocked with Cuban standards at times. The grounds were nice and the beach was so beautiful with white soft sand. There were lots of chairs at the beach and the pool and it was not overcrowded. We had cold showers the first few days we were there and they kept saying they would fix it, but until we bumped into a mechanic there ourselves this was never fixed. Also, I couldn't use my curling irons there since all the plugs were[... read more] 240 so it is helpful to bring a converter. The locks in the rooms weren't working and the mechanic also had to fix the screws and door since the hurricane had shifted that awhile ago. There wasn't even a coffee machine in the room, but there was great coffee in the lobby at the bar. I guess we were expecting more since we had gone to lots of all inclusive resorts in Dominican and also in Mexico, but Cuban standards are different. I guess it is true what they say that a 5 star in Cuba is probably a 3 star in our standards.
There were never any clean beach towels and everyday we checked and they said come back the next day, but they never got any. They did have a few good shows and parties in the lobby though. so there were some ups and downs like every place I guess.
If you want a great beach and quiet atmosphere than this is the resort to go to. The food was fairly good, and the pools were nice too. The main pool was quite deep though and too deep to walk up to the bar with a drink. If you want a really happening resort with lots of night life then this isn't the place to go to.
There were lots of things to do for kids at the family side of this hotel. They did upgrade us to a junior suite with an ocean view when we asked for a nice room, but we did find the room dated. When we complained about the service and cold showers and other difficulties in the end they tried to make it up to us by giving us a free lobster dinner so that was nice. We also enjoyed the tour to Havana and going on the double deck bus to Varadero. We listened to the Beatles band there and enjoyed the markets and walking around. It is a really safe place to go to and nice green trees and lots of flowers. The grounds are very beautiful at this resort. I would recommend this resort to people who like a nice beach and fairly good food with lots of activities for young kids. I guess the family concierge is worth paying for. They even give out free internet cards there too.

Paradisus Varadero: Excellent Resort
Great place to stay at. The buffet is truly fantastic. The a la carte restaurant is good too, just be prepared to wait for your meal. The beach is very nice to look at but the pool is even better. I spent most of my swim time in the pool. Great with the night entertainment.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Relaxing Stay
Quiet resort with beautiful beach and pool. Room was spacious but a little out dated. Huge king size bed and large balcony. Restaurants were good but portions were small however you could order seconds if you wanted. Japanese restaurant was shut down which was disappointing. A lot of the menu items were not available which was also disappointing. The buffet was large but everything seemed to be room temperature unless they prepared it fresh in front of you. The staff were very polite and treat y[... read more]ou well. Wait staff were great and deserved their tips. Tours were cheap and well worth the money spent. You’re the last to be dropped off the bus and the first to be picked up so plan for a long day. The entertainment was excellent. Wish they had more beer selections and all the usual liquor for any drink. No amaretto, all week. May and June is there rainy season so I would not go at this time. First 2 days were wash out plus pools were closed until mid week. La cart was disappointing based on the selections being offered, they seem to run out of a lot dinner and lunch selections. Plus after 10 pm there is zero night life.

Memories Cayo Largo: Beautiful resort with great and friendly service. However, be aware!
The grounds are beautiful and varied. Service is in every way prompt and courteous. Food is appetizing and varied. You can even have bubbly wine in the morning with your breakfast :-)
The rooms are large and clean. Many, on the second floor, have view on the sea even though they are not "rooms with sea view". However, many rooms provide a limited view, ie. give out on other bungalows...
On the negative side, water is not always available on the grounds. It seems the desalinization plant c[... read more]an't keep up with the number of the hotels on the island. Water was cut off periodically, although even the hotel manager denies it. I talked with many repeaters who confirmed the fact. After a while, we found out that water was available at around 5AM to 10 or 11AM, then it was cut off till 5PM when it was available again till around 10 or 11PM, then cut off again till 5AM...
We were very unlucky this year because we had heavy rain for over a week. Matters were made worse by the fact water was seeping in our second floor bedroom along one of the walls. I had to use our towels to keep water out of the central part of the bedroom so we would not slip while going to the bathroom (then when we did, we could not flush the toilet for lack of water...). We where offered to change room. Lots of people on second floors had the same problem, so we couldn't take the risk of repacking and unpacking again to find ourselves in a similar situation elsewhere. Luckily, before our first week was over, the lady next door reached the end of her vacation. We made arrangements with the office to change rooms. We were able to expedite matters by moving our belongings using the front veranda.
Finally, to our dismay, while we were waiting for the signal to enter the "outdoor cafeteria", when we saw a person spraying the tables with a solution to kill flies. Of course, the tables were already set with cutlery and glasses... people didn't understand our concerns... When I underlined the fact to Public Relations, I was told that this matter would be corrected. I'm not sure it was corrected the proper way. A doubt lingered... Of course we wouldn't see this anymore. It would be done sooner...
The spraying at night was common on the grounds...

Melia Marina Varadero: Must Go! You won't be disappointed
What an amazing Place. Upon check-in because we arrived early our room was not ready nobody to blame but our flight arrivals for that at 4 p.m. because they saw we had waited so long they upgraded our room to a marina View and what have you it was. This hotel has everything you need and more. Louis our favorite door man. It was a honor meeting him. The staff were all Pleasant though some people mention in reviews that Cuban's in general look miserable..we all have to remember what type of countr[... read more]y they're coming from it's quite a serious place. The lobby was nice in the lobby bar and Patio was the place to be the nightclub was closed because we were there during Cuba's national morning which was absolutely understandable. On the resort there is a few restaurants to choose from that are ala carte and if you walk down the boardwalk along the marina you'll meet a few other restaurants and a nightclub as well as many shops it's almost like it has its own town. That's where we got to the Argentinian Steakhouse and you'll be blessed to meet Daniel the waiter Who services something I have never experienced before it's a must go and you will be paying out of pocket but the prices are very reasonable. If it's the party life you want head down into Varadero and the reviews are right Calle 62 is The Happening spot. And check out the beach at Calle 30.. it's out of this world. A taxi will cost you 15 Cuc. Change your money at the hotel but Bring cash. Not all cards work. There's two pools one mainly for children and the other for anyone it's not an adults-only Resort but the amount of kids is very little. Yes Cuban food isn't the tastiest at the main Buffet but you'll find some good picks. Jet skiing is a 5 Cuc cab ride away. There were a lot of great people at this Resort and fond memories were made I would definitely recommend it and it's a close five star if not four and a half for sure thank you so much trip Central and especially Monica for all your help

Melia Las Americas: Loved this resort!
I have been to many resorts in Varadero including the 5 star Royalton Hicacos. Melia Las Antillas was my favorite to date!!! First the postives. Beach was awesome, pools nice, entertainment staff top notch. Bed in the Bungalow suite was king size and was so comfortable, food and restaurant staff were amazing (and I am a picky eater)! Lots of hot water, room cleaned regularly. As always, the Cuban people are so friendly and I always feel safe even when traveling off the resort. The negatives were[... read more] the draperies/bedding need to be updated (or at least remove the severe wrinkles) and most important, add more bar staff at the lobby bar and cafe bar. At times, you could wait 20-30 minutes or more to get a drink/plate of fries.
Would I go back? In a heartbeat :)

Melia Las Dunas: Amazing resort and definitely worth it!!!
Before flying out to the resort, I was reading a lot of the negative reviews and was concerned about this resort. But after a 6 day trip, the resort was fantastic and exceeded all expectations.
Food: There was something I can always find to eat at the buffet that I liked (e.g., pizza, fries, beans, pasta). Breakfast was great as the lady that made the omelette was awesome. Lunch and dinner was good as long as you went to the chefs to get freshly cooked sea food, variety of pastas and meats ([... read more]e.g., chicken, pork, beef).
Beach/pools: The beach and pools were nice and clean. There was more than enough chairs to lie down and there was a bar right by the beach. The only complaint was if you were hungry, it was a considerable walk to get to the 24/7 snack bar.
Rooms: I was initially worried about the rooms after reading some reviews about bed bugs and a bad smelling odour. But there was nothing to worry about as the room was clean, had no distinctive smell, AC worked perfectly, and a good quality television.
Service: One of the best part of this resort was the service my friends and I received at this resort, it was probably because we would always tip like one peso each (4 people) after every meal. Our waiter Roger was the coolest and went above and beyond as he would always reserve a table for us during breakfast and lunch. Additionally, Roger would always provide us the 2L water bottle free of charge or without even asking for it as he always said this if for when you go to the beach. His service was outstanding. Then our housekeeper Dlianna was awesome as our rooms were very clean and would try to engage in conversations with us.
Location: The location was okay as there's not that much to do outside the resort as it's not like Varadero where you could visit Havana or local markets. But if you rent the scooters there for 10 pesos for the first hour (3 pesos for every additional hour) to travel across the city was amazing and filled with great picture moments. You definitely have to try this out as some scooters could reach up to 105 km/h.

Melia Las Americas: A beautiful resort and great staff but some challenges
The resort is very beautiful. The rooms, pool and beach are all nice. There are three easily accessible restaurants without a reservation, one being a really quaint 24 hour cafe overlooking the beach. There are outside and inside seats, but really enjoyable early morning and late evenings.
One issue I had was that my room was a problem from the beginning. The door didn't shut properly and I had to switch to another room. Then the next day, I had to switch again as I had a room with an oce[... read more]an view and they had to wait for one of these rooms to become available. However, the staff were quite good about the whole thing. They were very kind and helpful, but I can't understand why I was given a faulty room in the first place.
Overall, I think the food was good although I know most people complain about the food in Cuba. Also, there were four restaurants where you had to make reservations and I tried three of them. They were fine, but not again the same as we would have in Canada. Fine but not excellent except for the crepe flambe perhaps that I had at the international restaurant.
I would recommend this hotel due to the really good facilities, staff and location. Overall it is the best resort I have stayed in in Cuba so far. Definitely a 4 star experience.

Sol Palmeras: Beautiful beach!
We liked Sol Palmeras for many reasons that I will try to list in no particular order, although the beach does need to go first.
This property has a gorgeous, long, swimmable beach. The beach grill and bar hardly ever had a lineup even when super busy.
The pool is older but was still enjoyed by many. 3* for pool, 10* for beach.
Renovated rooms have ample space, drawers, hot water, bar fridge, good lighting. *hard beds but good pillows*
The rooms are serviced by friendly and cheerful clean[... read more]ers.
Relaxed mix of guests from all over, English is not the primary language...Spanish, French, German and English.
No agressive vendors here...no sales pitches for timeshare...this is a great place to get away from these things... and no "butlers".
Big busy buffet...noisy, fun, great servers, always refreshed platters of fruit and everything else. Various grill stations for fresh fish, pasta, meat choices and in the morning, the best eggs/omelettes...not greasy like other places we've been. Lots of choices, something for everyone. Nice desserts including a chocolate fountain (and an endless supply of meringue cookies:)
This is a huge property but the hotel feels compact if you are in a room in the main building...the closer bungalows also look amazing for a family holiday. Some people like the further away bungalows for the quiet retreat.
We plan to return to Sol Palmeras ASAP.
