Our family just came home from our vacation at Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal Resort.
We all had a great time there. A big thank you to all the staff there, they are all so committed to their work. 2 thumbs up.
My son enjoyed the Eco-Bahia walking tour. Very educational. We learned so much about the Mayan culture. Thank you to our tour guide.
The must try restaurant is Don Pablo at Tulum.

Great Resort, had a blast!
Everything was fantastic. Buffet and a la carte restaurants were great.
Advise: book your a la carte as soon as you arrive, they are all very popular. The beach and pool chairs fill quickly, get there early. Most people save chairs using towels.
My one criticism is that the rooms either have two Double beds or one King including a couch/bed for a kid. A double bed for 2 adults is pretty squishy...keep this in mind if needing the double bed option for kids. May need to get a second room wit[... read more]h a King next time.

Return to the Bahia Akumal
This is my 2nd time back to Akumal in the last year. I do love all aspects of this Bahia resort location - food, service and rooms are excellent. Any minor service failures are remedied quickly. I found on this visit there was a lot of follow up from management regarding service and items were dealt with promptly. Buildings, rooms and grounds are well maintained. A la carte restaurants are excellent. The Dolce Vita was my favourite, and service is exceptional at all of them. The resort [... read more]was busier this visit, and I was impressed at how hard the bartenders work their magic. It was non stop for them, and they were always pleasant. This resort is further away from the airport, but its beach, food and service is well worth the drive.

Riveria Maya Bahia Principe Akumal
The rooms were very nice and kept very clean. Staff was wonderful, and helpful. Beach was nice but very shallow. Nice pools but need more umbrellas. Food was good and other restaurants also good. Very large complex but many trolleys to take everywhere. Definitely best to stay in resort by beach.

Relaxing vacation
Great place to spend your vacation. We liked the service of the hotel staff a lot. They paid attention to the little details. There was triple occupancy in our room[ two adults and a child ] and our son was using the sofa bed in our room.
The sofa bed was totally made for him every day, with fresh sheets, pillows etc and they even left him a pair of child slippers and a gown. There was free wifi in the lobby and the room. The buffet restaurant was well stocked . Everything was just right.
The [... read more]only suggestion that we had was that in the buffet restaurant the vegetarian section should be separate. This will save the vegetarian people from going all around the area and looking for the vegetarian food, which is not marked properly a lot of times. Also people tend to mix serving spoons a lot of times and meat ends up in the vege food. They should use separate cooking stations for the vegetarian food and not use same utensils, fryers, oils, etc for the vege food as they are for the meat.

Wonderful resort, with exceptions.
This is my third time at this resort. It is a wonderful place. The grounds are beautiful, the beaches, although not Cuba type beaches, are wonderful, the people are mostly wonderful, the food is delicious and plentiful, and if you have good weather, it can be an overall amazing experience. For a 5 star resort, it does come close to offering the same treatments of what one would come to expect from a 5 star resort outside Canada/U.S. Except, there is no consistency. In the three times I went[... read more], this was the first time that I actually experienced 5 star service in every way. Having a personal butler was very nice. Ours was called Darwin. He was exceptional. He did not miss one day of looking us up and making sure all was well in our room/requests. He also left wonderful surprises for us a couple of evenings during turn down service. Another really amazing person was our mini-bar re-stocker named Felipe. He was a kind, compassionate and truly caring person. I had an accident on the 4th day of my vacation. I slipped and fell on the landing. It had just rained and the tiles were all wet. Despite my carefulness, it still happened. Everyone at the resort was wonderful in the way they took care of me, getting me to the hospital, accommodating special room service, late check out, etc. until my departure. It is a very pleasant place to visit.
The choice of gourmet, a la carte restaurants is amazing. At this particular hotel, you can have access to all of them, and if you want to repeat a place, you can. We were booked for one every night, except that with the accident, we could only go to three of them. Maiko, a Japanese restaurant, has delicious food (although definitely not typical Japanese); Los Corales, a Brazilian restaurant on the beach, also offers delicious fare (mostly charcoal grilled meats), and an experience; Frutto del Mar, a seafood restaurant, had excellent fare as well. Top class food at each of them. Too bad we didn't make it to the other ones. The last time we went, we were in a 7 day hurricane, so we didn't dine out. Prior to that, those amenities were not offered. If you are a foodie, going to the a la carte restaurants is a must! Although the buffets are also well stocked with a large variety. Most of the food on their menus are good as well.
Now, for the cons: this is the third time we visit, and the third time they didn't give us the room we paid for. Their website offers one or two beds, and we have always asked for two beds, but only ever get one king sized and one sofa bed. My husband slept on the sofa bed for several nights and got a very bad back ache. Our butler attempted to get us a second bed in the very small room we were in (they definitely have larger rooms, as in my past experience), but the mattress that arrived was not only broken, but filthy beyond measure. It was probably garbage ready, but they tried to use it. We refused it. This made me wonder, and I pulled off the sheets to the regular king sized bed, and lo and behold, the mattress was also filthy. I was shocked and disgusted that this 5 star resort were using such filthy mattresses for their well paying guests. There was also a problem with the floors. The bathroom especially, had sticky stuff on the floor by the toilet (anyone can figure this out), and they never washed it. Even after we complained at reception and to the concierge. They told us they don't wash the floor daily! The only time we saw an extra effort being made was after we spoke with our butler. The following day, the maid and what seemed like her supervisor came in the room and did a much better job of cleaning it together. The bathroom floor, however, although better than before was still not totally clean. So, being borderline OCD, this stuff drove me nuts. The last two vacations, prior to this one, the maids were very, very nice and thorough. They would also leave decorated towels on the bed after making it. Not this one. I felt she was lazy. She'd be in and out of our room within 10-12 minutes!! With the exception of when she came in with her supervisor. Two of them cleaning took almost 25 minutes... what a difference. In any case, this was most disturbing.
If you have mobility issues, and need a wheel chair, bring your own. The hotel had to scramble to get me a wheel chair after the accident, and the best they could do was a broken one, which tested my husband's patience!! So bring your own. There are trolleys that take you just about anywhere you want to go on the resort. Also, if you get a butler like we did, he comes with a club car for personal service. Because I am unable to walk long distances, he was very helpful in this area. The first part of our vacation was wonderful.
Also to keep in mind, they now have what the call "Premiere". These are vacation rental owners who have their own buildings and their own beach. If you are in building 47, you will be facing their dedicated beach and you are not allowed on it. There are two other beaches for you to use. There is an adult beach only by the infinity pool, and then a family friendly one, across from the pool closest to this building 47.
Finally, I found this resort much busier than the last two times I went, and yet this was considered low season. I fear that these vacation rental people have crowded the place. They also have new adult only buildings, which of course add to the crowding. What bothered me most about this adult only beach was that chairs would be 'saved' as early as 6 a.m. and some of the occupants never showed up, all day long. We suspect they stayed at the infinity pool. So they reserved chairs that could be accommodating people who really want to be on the beach. There aren't enough to go around, so I can't imagine what high season would be like!
If you are okay with a very large resort, lots of people, and questionable room cleanliness (every maid is different, but I wonder about the mattresses); then what the rest of this resort offers is amazing. I do wish I could return, but all to be seen.

Outstanding vacations !!!!
This hotel has the best beach on the the whole coast. Sand on the shore... sand in the water...Palapas to protect you from the sun, a very nice bathing experience in a Crystal clear water !
The food was extraordinary with an outstanding buffet and specialized restaurants. The personnel from the hotel is efficient and always has an answer for you. They are friendly but also discreet and not annoying.
Rooms are OK ! I have seen better but it was acceptable and comfortable.
I enjoyed the snack [... read more]restaurant by the sea a lot.
We took an excursion to Ek-Balam and Maya Cenote with the french guide, Anthony. Exciting trip and a knowledgable guide. We learned a lot about the Mayas and the formation of the cenotes.
Over all, a vey pleasant trip in a beautiful location.

We loved our stay! The only blip on an otherwise fantastic experience was the fact that we booked for a King room and got 2 double beds. Otherwise we loved the beach, the service was great (staff were so friendly).

Fabulous Resort!
It was my first time ever being to an all inclusive resort, let alone one so beautiful! Everything that I imagined was met at this resort. I had one of the best weeks of my life. The staff were welcoming and inviting. Everytime you passed them outside or inside, they would greet you. The room service, bell boys, and bar tenders were amazing! Some bar tenders even got to know you well enough that they had your drink ready when you got to the bar! I 100% will return, and I recommend the resort to [... read more]anyone!

Such a wonderful resort!!!
We stayed at the Luxury Bahia Akumal March 30th-April 6th, 2017 and had the best time. I went with my husband and 18 year old son as well as my parents. The staff here are so incredibly sweet, we just loved them. The grounds are so beautiful. We would enjoy an evening trolley ride to the other resorts (Coba and Tulum) just to sight see. The resort is huge but the trolleys were always only a 5 minute wait to take you anywhere.
The food in the buffet was simply delicious....and OMG the dese[... read more]rts!!! We went to 4 ala cartes, the Brazilian, Mexican, gourmet and Japanese. The Mexican restaurant was so delicious and the entertainment was so fun. The mariachi band were amazing and would go to every table and play you a song and goof around with everyone and were always ready to pose for pictures with you. The Brazilian is a must...so much meat on a stick :) yum!!!!
The beach was just ok...BUT...the man made lagoons were so much fun and had so many fish in them. You didn't usually see too many unless you fed them pieces of bread, then there are hundreds of them. I absolutely looked forward to this every day! I would suggest wearing water shoes as it is quite rocky. My mother is abit nervous of the big waves so this lagoon was perfect for her and she had so much fun....we all did!!! There is an adult beach and infinity pool at the end of the Akumal beach, this was where we spent most of our days. There's an awesome lunch buffet and bar there too, and a trolley to take you back to the lobby or your room. It was heaven!
The rooms were beautiful. Always had an abundance of hot water, fridge stocked and room cleaned daily. The only down side was the hard mattress, however in my parents room their bed was nice and soft. Guess it is hit or miss there.
I emailed the resort prior to our arrival requesting a villa near the pool and lobby as my parents are elderly and they accommodated us completely...we had the best location in my opinion. We stayed in villa 49....so perfect!
Thank you Akumal, we will be back!!!!

So so
Not a luxury resort by any means. I've stayed at the coba and it was nicer. Kids all over the swim up bar so we had to drink at the infinity pool with butler service, ooooooo!!! One guy and one guy at the bar that you had to get out of the pool and get but there is a line up including the butler. My rooms ac was sub par, the door would open when it pleased and the phone had to be replaced. Second time at Grand Bahia principe and my last.

Great resort
This is our 3rd visit to this resort. The only change is the addition of the adult area, otherwise the resort is same as in the past. We think this a great resort and will be returning to ( Akumal) again.
