Hotel Playa Paraiso: Worst experience in Cuba over 15 years
I have been to Cuba many times and at this resort is the second time. It is extremely disappointing in terms of hygiene, flies, power, and water outages. We were not able to have one single bite without worrying that we were eating flies and mosquitoes. Foods at buffets are covered with flies) They serve coffee in plastic or champagne glass. Bonus point if you tell me the type of these two different cockroaches who were sharing our room :)) The only positive thing was the beach, but you have to [... read more]reserve your spot early at 7 am otherwise you may end up on the sand with a beach towel.

Royalton Cayo Santa Maria: Amazing Staff
Great boutique resort, easy to get around for someone with mobility issues as the property is fairly small. A lot of seniors vacation here so they need to up their game with the addition of railings to a lot of the stairs to hold for support. Bathrooms around resort very clean but not all always open and some of the handicapped ones were missing a toilet seat. Food a little boring as no buffet (except for a small one at breakfast) and only two ala carte restaurants, but tasty. A lot of people[... read more] still playing the towel game. We did manage to finally get lounge chairs around the lower pool and a Bali bed after complaining to the manager. He quickly rectified the matter by setting aside two beds and loungers with a handicap sign for ourselves and another couple, thank you for listening Alejandro!! Butlers were amazing, I have been to other resorts with butlers , but this resort you could always find yours, they knew who you were before you arrived, always attentive, and will bend over backwards so you can enjoy your vacation. Special shout out to our butlers Javier and Maria!! We tipped in American and Canadian currency, bills and coin, and it was never a problem. Try to bring a lot of over the counter meds for the Cuban people, Advil, Tylenol etc. they really need them.

Barcelo Solymar: Good 2 weeks/ 3.5 Star Hotel- Jan.2-16, 2024
It was our first time staying at the Solymar, I would stay again if the price was right. There are a few things I wanted to mention, hopefully this will help with you trip.
Front desk staff- were just ok, they really need to communicate a little better. When we checked in, only 1 other person was at the desk, so they weren't busy. The front desk staff never gave us a safe key, never told us about were to get beach towels, or were to book the specialty dinners. Safe key did not work, it took a[... read more]n entire day to resolve. You will have to ask a lot of questions after you arrive, it takes a couple days to figure things out.
Superior room- Our room was on the first floor, room 1116. It was fine and looked a little worn, that didn't bother us. The beds were very comfortable, sheets changes everother day, 2 bath towels, no hand or face clothes. AC worked, TV worked (no remote), 1 large bottle of water is place in your fridge each day. You can fill up water bottles in the buffet restaurant.
Housekeep- Did a great job, they work very long days, and that's 6 days a week. Our room was clean and in good order everyday. The house keeper for your room is who you get your beach towels from, they also change them out for you. IF you don't see your housekeeper, go to the front desk and request they get put in your room. I think they have a limited supply and have to registered to your room. If you loose a beach towel, it's just over $30 USD to replace. TIP your house keeper everyday!
Bars- Great staff, and work 6 days a week as well. The staff were very friendly. PLEASE tip your bartenders, they will take care of you! Limited pop at the bars, only Sprite and Orange Fanta. They have draft beef, rum, tequila and sometimes vodka. Our drink of choice is vodka, we bought 2 bottles at Duty free on the way down, that really saved us.
Buffet Restaurants- 3 buffets at day breakfast from 7-10, lunch from 12:30-3 and dinner from 7-10. The food was pretty basic, a lot of it wasn't to my liking, but I always found something to eat. Omelets in the morning!! TIP your omelet person! The service staff were great, and after a couple days they recognized us and brought our drinks or coffee to the table. Of course we tipped every meal, it was so disgusting to see how many people didn't tip.
Beach- Was amazing! I love this beach so much. I would suggest IF you want a palapa you will need to put your towels on the chairs by 10am, otherwise you will be out of luck that day.
Specialty restaurants- There was Italian in the lobby of the hotel, it was not good. Seafood down by the beach, we had lobster, excellent. A couple Spanish restaurants, by the beach towards Areas Blanca, Excellent, and a Mexican in the lobby of the Areas Blanca, not bad.
Booking Specialty restaurants- This is done in the lobby office to the left of the elevators basically from 9-11 daily. Be there early, the line forms very fast. Try to book as many as you can, the buffet gets tried after a while. TIP the lady, we did $5 CAD, it really helped. The resort has a "STARS" dinner once twice a week, It does cost $15 USD by Credit car only, it was totally worth it. The service was like fine dinning and the 4 course dinner was amazing! Most people tried to dress up for dinner, bring some nice shirts and a nice pair of pants. Tank tops, day/beachwear is not allowed in the restaurants.
Lobby and cleaning staff- The lobby is beautiful and very well maintained. The cleaning staff were working constantly, and kept it is tip top shape.
What to bring- A refillable bottle of drinks, creams, suntan lotion, Benadryl or allergy medication. I got some bits from sand fleas on my legs, Benadryl and creams really helped. REMEBER , the electrical is 220v there, bring an adaptor to pug stuff in.
Excursions and tour buses- ALL are paid for on credit car now, cash will not be accepted. The double decker tour bus that stops in front of the hotel, cost $5 USD, you pay when you enter the bus. The tour is about 2 hours long and you can hop off or get on all day with that $5 pass.
Varadero downtown- we went a couple times, the 2 hotels you have access to are literally starts across the street. It was fine, but general expensive. Everything is in USD, beer cost $5 US each. ALSO if you every need to go the bathroom, good luck. It costs $1 USD or 200 pesos. If you don't pay you can't go in, there sometimes locked. The cleaning lady stands out front with the toilet paper, you get 2 squares...LOL
Sometimes no toilet see, we felt we were being extorted and we were eating in the place, it was a turn off.
Money and CC- Bring Canadian for some tipping, not $1/$2 try can't do anything with it. The Cubans want USD, bring singles, $5's, 10's. 20,s. You will need CC if you want to do any excursions, notify your bank before you go! You can exchange money on the bus to the hotel to get you started, don't buy too much. The lobby bar in the hotel will convert your money to pesos. Generally speaking $10 USD gets you 2400 pesos. We changed about $100 USD over the course of our 2 weeks. Tipping is generally about 200-300 pesos for each meal at the buffet, 400-500 pesos for housekeeping, Bartenders 200 pesos per 2 drinks.
General composition of guest- When we were there it was 40% Russian, 30% Quebecois, and 30% Spanish/English and everyone else. The number of Russians really suppressed me, I guess they can go too many places anymore, so there is CUBA.
Well that's it, if you get good price, try it out. This a 3-3.5 star, the price has to make sense for me to go back.

Roc Barlovento: Roc Barlovento a great disappointment
I took a chance a this resort because I thought it was close to town. You do have to take a cab or the on off bus.
I have been to Cuba over 10 times. I have now decided to not go back.
I always went for the people & beach.
The beach could be good if they cleaned it . I got tired of picking up garbage every time I took a walk. And so crowded everyone sitting on top of each other.
The staff very few ever smiled . I was actually yelled at by one bartender. I dont know how many $1.us I put do[... read more]wn at the bar. Never had that happened before.
It was a fiasco getting a room with a shower only& on the first floor. I have trouble walking. Had to settle with a room far from everything on the second floor and no balcony.
I won't even talk about the food for the first time I ate out a restaurants.
I also paid for an upgrade got nothing because all the specials that you got any one could get.
I could go on . But needless to say I would not recommend this hotel.
The only person I will give thanks to is Larry at customer service. If only the rest of the staff and front desk were as nice & helpful as he was.
Great smile LARRY please teach the front desk to great there customers the same as you do.

Iberostar Origin Laguna Azul: Very Bad Hotel - Total Disappointment
I wish we did not select this hotel. I believe that Tripcentral or Sunwing should send an independent inspector there to check it out. Until this many, many issues are resolved - please exclude this hotel from the options and please do not send people over there. This is a total shame to Ibersotar network reputation and to Cuba overall.
1. Elevators do not work in any of the buildings. We paid extra for the ocean view room and were placed on the 5th floor. We were with a 10-month old baby and[... read more] a stroller. We needed to walk the stairs multiple times per day with the baby and the stroller. We also witnessed how hard it was for people with disabilities to move between the levels. Lobby is on the 3rd floor and the buffet is on the 1st floor. Even if you do not go to your room, you are still required to move the levels. We were carrying the stroller on the stairs multiple times per day. We did not receive any warning in advance. We did not get any apologies from the hotel. We were not offered a different room.
2. Drinks quality and availability. Coffee was not available at all bar locations for days, except the lobby bar. I believe that the milk used in the coffee was powdered as multiple times we were tasting powder lumps in the milk. There was no pop, except tonic. No soda or bottled water. Coca-cola was available for 3 days out of 11 and it wasn't an original Coke/Pepsi. All the alcoholic cocktails were limited to the options alcohol + tonic. Wine selection was only red, white or rose - with no name (e.g. merlot, it was just red wine), the wine quality was poor. Many alcoholic drinks were not available - e.g. vermouth. All the juices were powdered and of a very poor quality. There were very limited options for non-alcoholic drinks - just tonic or powdered juice. Having at least lemonade would have been nice.
3. Food quality and variety. There was mostly processed meat - sausages, ham etc. and very rarely pork, beef or chicken. Not every day and only for one meal per day there was grilled fish or meat, however, guests were required to stand in the line for 15-20 minutes. Eggs were not available for half of our stay for breakfast. Vegetables were very limited - salad bar (cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers) or steamed pumpkin, eggplants, green peppers, tomatoes tasting all very plain. Rice and beans were always there. Pasta was always available, however, it was always overcooked. Cheese variety was good. The food presentation was not appealing. There were no potatoes, except French fries in a snack bar 3 days out of 11.
A-la carte restaurants were a bit better, except Cuban restaurant which served the same buffet food on nicer plates.
4. The big pool didn't work, the hot tubs didn't work. We received an email about the main pool being repaired 2 days before our trip but no word about the hot tubs. The working pools had damaged tiles and were unpleasant to walk in, especially for the baby.
5. Room cleaning did not happen every day, despite the fact we put a sign on our door. One day we had to go out to throw away the garbage ourselves (there were diapers). The cleaning lady works 9 to 5 and on some days she was not able to find 15 minutes to clean the room, unless you begged her. We always went to the beach 8am to 12pm and put the sign on the door but most of the days when we were comin back the room wasn't cleaned. Our baby was going for a nap 12pm to 2pm and we put the "do not disturb" sign on the door. On some days the cleaning lady would barge in during that time, despite the sign. We were refusing the cleaning during our baby naptime and she would assume we wouldn't need it that day, due to the language barrier.
I feel like I paid twice more than I supposed to. I feel robbed, tired and disappointed. When I was leaving this hotel I was thinking maybe all Cuba is like this and that I would never come back to this country. But after talking to other tourists, I realized this was the hotel problem. Tripcentral - please don't send people there. If you are considering going this hotel - please don't go, it doesn't worth your money, time and mental health.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Very Fun Time! - See Review for TIPS
We went with 11 of our friends and family January 9-16th. It was a great trip!
The staff were very friendly!
Great service by Joel at the Beach Bar, Andres at the Pool/Snack Bar, Rosa & Monica in the buffet restaurant and Nerida from the Coffee Bar.
The rooms were clean. However, during the week although the maids "cleaned" the rooms every day you can tell it is a very very quick run through.
We had hot water everyday but in our room the toilet did not flush very well, we had to go to guest [... read more]services to ask for a worker to fix it. They did come that very same day, it helped for a day but then went back to not flushing well. TIP -The tank takes forever to refill so we would use the shower head to fill the tank and then flush again.
Our shower hook/curtain fell down every day. We also asked for it to be fixed but they did not fix it until the last day.
We never received fresh towels but some of our family did get fresh towels everyday.
The air conditioner worked great in our room, however, one of our families room did not have air all week even though they ask for it to be fixed at customer service.
Very inconsistent service and issues in each of our rooms.
The food was not very good. I mean we already knew that Cuba never has the best food in the first place, plus with the supply shortage it was worse. We knew this going into the vacation so I am not complaining just informing. We always found something to eat.
TIPS
- The ocean was beautiful but there were rocks to get through when you first get into the ocean so I would definitely bring water shoes.
- The mosquitos were terrible. Bring lots and lots of bug spray.
- The flies at the beach were everywhere. Stay clear of sitting near garbage cans, throw out your finished drink cups right away. We brought travel mugs so the flies were not able to get into our cups plus the drinks stayed cold longer. The first few days not many flies but end of week tons of flies, perhaps the weather was the reason?!?
- We left $1 USD in the fridge everyday with a note for extra bottles of water. Normally you receive two small water bottles each day but by doing this we received 4 bottles of water.
- At the breakfast buffet some of the omelette stations have fresh eggs under the counter so if you ask the right cook they will fry those eggs. Bring your bacon to a cook if you want it crispier.
- We brought peanut butter and had toast each breakfast. We brought some snacks with us, Pringles, Mixed nuts & Protein bars. I would strongly recommend this.
- Book as many a la cartes as you can as the food was better in those restaurants over the buffet.
- Do not miss the Tuesday show - acrobatics, it was great! That crew must come in just for that night. The rest of the shows in our opinion were not good. It was a different crew, less talented. We tried a couple but ended up walking out. Bring cards or games for night entertainment. They did always have dancing after the show.
- If you want the bed to be more comfortable move the sofa bed cushions onto the bed for more cushion.

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Last minute vacation
Arrived at this resort January 13th and was supposed to stay for 1week.
On our arrival noticed many flies in the lobby. Arrived to our room and was pleasantly surprised; large clean room, modern shower, turned out to be a very comfortable bed.
Resort is clean, well kept grounds, beautiful beach and nice pool.
24 hour snack bar served fries and ham and cheese sandwiches; not much more.
The abundance of flies was unreal: they were everywhere: dining room, beach, pool area, buffet, lobby.
Afte[... read more]r day 2, we asked to move resort which was done by our rep quickly. We went to Melia Jardines del Rey where there was not much of an improvement.
We are frequent flyers and have vacationed north and Central America, visited many islands in the Caribbean.
We had been to Cuba 3 times before this, and were aware of the issues with food and drinks and no see-ums, but this infestation of flies everywhere was just too much.
Not being able to have a drink or a bite to eat without covering your plate, cup, wine glass with a napkin was over the top.

Grand Aston Varadero Beach Resort: You get what you paid for
This was brand new hotel with low price.
The hotel design is nice.
The rooms are spacious but and nice but:
- They did not have flat sheets under comforter which is the basic of the hygiene (I do not believe that they wash comforters every time the guests are changed).
- In 10 days they replaced bottom sheets (on the mattress) once.
- In bathroom we had only bath towels for 4 days, smaller – hand towels we got after 4 days.
Food was not so bad as in other hotels last year. It was good enou[... read more]gh, but you had to wait in long line if you wanted barbecued meet. We had eggs only 4 out of 10 days and the line was to long.
There was no white wine (only one day we got it). Selection of other drinks was good but mojito was hard to get.
To book a la carte restaurant you had to wait in line for more that 1 hour every day and food was terrible. Not worth of time lost to book.
There were only I think 28 umbrellas at the beach and around 80 beds. That was not enough for the hotel with 500+ rooms. We had to get to the beach before 7:00 am to reserve our place under the shade.
The beach is around 2 km long but it is impossible to walk on it.
Sand at the beach is quite far from Varadero beach. The sand is soft and you can not walk on it.
To enter and get out of the water was hard because of rocks in the water and sand dunes.
To summarize, we would not go there again.

Melia Cayo Coco: The Best!
We love this resort and have been 3 times in the last 2 years, and planning our 4th. The beach is absolutely the best!
The grounds are well looked after, and the rooms kept clean. Depending on which block you are in, you may have some issues with the plumbing. This is the only down-side we experienced. The food was adequate and plentiful, as was the alcohol supply. However, the biggest think going for The Melia is the staff! All are courteous, attentive and smiley! Keep it up

One thing I did not like at all, even with the so called option flex the plane coming home it was so so small in between the seats I cannot remember being on a plane with so little space, but we were told there was enough space for your care on suitcase there is something wrong with there suitcase policies.
Enough the staff cannot help that.one more thing food wise it was 99% better than in April 2023.
I would recommend this hotel but will first tell them what they can expect, not more than fair.

Memories Trinidad Del Mar: A nice week
We spent a week in this resort. It was an inexpensive holiday and we did not have high expectations.
This is a small, quiet resort with very nice gardens and a shallow pool (max 3ft deep) located right on the beach on the Alcon peninsula. The beach is beautiful and the water warm although not as clear as the North shore. And the sunsets on the ocean are magnificent.
It takes 2.5 hours to get from the airport to the resort and there is no stop, so be warned. The ride is quite nice through the l[... read more]ush mountains of Cuba.
We booked a Superior Room, Diamond Club (Sunwing). We are not sure it was worth it as the rooms were very dated, some had mould, none had hot water pressure, many did not have working bed side lighting... It seems that there might be renovated rooms but they were not offered to us, although we were relocated to a room where the toilet flushed after asking Guest Services for a functioning room.
Not their fault, Cuba is in crisis and it is difficult to get anything there. The staff cannot go to the hardware store, the shelves are bare everywhere.
There are not many activities and entertainment at the resort, but the local band called Son Horizontes is absolutely charming. There was a little beach party at sunset one evening and paella on the beach once at lunch time.
We were provided fresh bottled water everyday and there was always plenty of food, although very monotonous after a few days as there were shortages of items. Be warned that there are no cereals and no yogourt at all.
The staff was always very accommodating and welcoming.
The beach had a lot of sand fleas which was a real problem for me.
American 1$ bills for tips seem to be preferred over many other currencies.
We visited beautiful Trinidad that is a bus ride away from the resort. I recommend bringing the people some goodies such as Summer clothes, sunglasses, OTC medication, sunscreen, granola bars, candies, etc... They are quite poor, cannot get many of these items and they are very happy when they receive gifts.
Reminder, you should bring the following for yourself:
- all medication you require including OTC meds, as you might not be able to find it there.
- bug repellent, allergy med, anti-itch cream...because of the nasty sand fleas and some mosquitoes
- some toilet paper as it might be lacking in some public places, including the airport
- Hand sanitizer as it is not provided anywhere we went
All in all, we had a good week, it was quite inexpensive, but we would not go back.

Sanctuary at Grand Memories Santa Maria: Amazing Beach!
The beach was simply stunning, with walkable sand and warm, calm water on most days. Aside from the occasional "shark warning" that required a quick exit from the water, it was a perfect beach experience. The hotel pool was also great, with a fun and lively afternoon atmosphere. While the hotel could benefit from some upgrades, it was generally acceptable. The food was decent unless you are a picky eater. There were occasional shortages, but they were not significant. However, the public bathroo[... read more]ms were often in poor condition, with the women's bathrooms frequently being "out of order" and lacking toilet paper. This 7-day all-inclusive vacation is priced at under $1000 and offers great value, especially for those just wanting to relax on the beach.
This resort is absolutely stunning compared to others we drove by . Its light and bright lobby is so inviting. The main Bar has everything and the service is great. The coffee bar is the best in the entire place - you can get ice coffees, Spanish coffees, Irish coffees, Cappuccino, etc. etc. We had coffee there every single day.
The beach is stunning - white sand with crystal clear greenish blue water. No fish, No junk, No weeds. Each beach area has a bar and a snack bar which makes h[... read more]amburgers, chicken sandwiches and cuban pulled pork sandwiches. My favorite were the burgers.
Lots of chairs to sit on at the beach. The pools were fantastic as well with lots of chairs.
Its a huge resort over 1000 rooms but we went during slow time so probably only about 250 rooms rented. I am not sure i would want to be there with over 2000 people. I suspect when its full you would have a hard time getting a chair at the pool or the beach (not sure !).
We will be going back there.
The food is typical of all the resorts - there is plenty to eat but depends on your taste buds. Its after all Cuban and not North American food preparation. That is what people forget.
There is a shortage of Toilet paper in public washrooms - so bring a couple of rolls from home and always take it with you on the resort. Your room will have toilet paper so not to worry there.
The rooms were a good size and the balcony was great. We did not upgrade but had standard Gardenview room which was very nice.
There are cats on the resort - so i made sure we fed them during our stay. I took my leftover food in a zip loc baggie and fed them as i saw them.

Brisas Guardalavaca: Love this place
Cuba January 2024
Is I sit here in my warm bed I’m thinking ?. Going on my second week here. There are many shortages. Diet Coke. Cola. Sprite. White wine. Champagne, and even water at times. I started to fall into the typical tourist attitude.
“The money we pay and there is nothing! Complaining ?. Again as I sit here in my warm bed, I’m thinking about the Cuban people that don’t have heat in their house on chilly nights. As it gets here in January and February. The Cuban people[... read more] who don’t have Diet Coke wine, champagne, or even water and I’m thinking the food is great. My belly is full….I am not cooking. I am not Cleaning, so who am I to complain about the shortages that the workers here at the Hotel cannot control???? it’s not their fault they feel terrible when they have to say sorry we don’t have it. For some reason we tourists feel entitled, but if they can’t even get it. How do we expect to have it? Yes, we pay a bit of money to come here, but it’s Cuba. We have good music, pool, beach, entertainment and cold beer. There are shortages!!! As I look in the mirror and see my tanned face and feel the warmth ??on my body. I realize the reason why I came here!!! It’s freezing cold at home and I just wanted to feel the sun ? on my face. That’s what I’m getting every day when I go down to the beach. I have sun on my face and I see the beautiful ocean. Watch the Cuban family’s play on the beach and see how happy they are with nothing. They are starving don’t have cold unlimited beer, they don’t have a quarter of what we have here at the hotel but they are still happy. I’m speaking about every hotel at the moment has shortages doesn’t matter how much you pay or where you go, so when you come to cuba. Remember bring things that we enjoy and have abundance of from Home, ketchup, mustard mio dry soup anything that can make your trip better because here they just don’t have it and it’s not their fault. Bring lightweight stuff ( dry soup, boxes of stuffing) I even brought frozen orange juice. Yep the floors are slippery when they’re wet , it’s not the Cubans’s fault…. we just have to be more cautious and more careful as in another post get slip resistant sandals, or shoes to avoid slipping and falling. They have to wear very uncomfortable shoes all day long standing 16 HOURS they slip and fall and they get hurt yet they still have to work. They still greet us with a smile. So to all the workers here at Brisas . Thank you for all your hard work and your dedication. I’m grateful for you, a clean room, cooked food, wifi , especially breakfast lol, soap, shampoo, AND TOILET PAPER in room. I am sorry if I had complained once maybe twice about no diet Coke or no white wine. I’m sorry I love your country and I love every minute that I am here. We are not entitled we are spoiled.
Dedicated to everyone lying around soaking up the beauty of Cuba.
Even with the flaws I will return.
