Enjoyed our stay at the Iberostar. Our room was clean and comfortable. The food was very good, lots of choice. The beach BBQ and cook outs were also very good. The grounds and lobby were nicely decorated with Christmas lights, very pretty. The staff is amazing there, they are very friendly and helpful.

Marien Puerto Plata Hotel: Great stay!!
Resort had great food and pool area, close to the beach and public areas were very clean. The rooms, on the other hand, were very underwhelming. Definitely need some updating. The staff we encountered were friendly and helpful except for the front desk staff.

Cofresi Palm Beach and Spa Resort: TERRIBLE BEACH
The resort it self was amazing, however we have spoken to our agent prior to going to this resort and stated our priority which is the BEACH. Unfortunately during our stay at this beautiful resort we were not able to go into this "Caribbean Sea" at all. TERRIBLE! We were very upset at the fact that we spent over forty minutes on the phone with an agent to ask about the beach and ended up not being able to use it at all. Our last trip was booked via redtag and will continue with that from now on.

Riu Merengue: Beautiful Resort
We found our overall stay amazing. The hotel was clean and the staff and servers were very friendly and quick. The food was really good and the entertainment was always great to see. We did have rain everyday, but no one can predict the weather when booking a trip but we still got our sunny days and a great tan.

Viva Heavens by Wyndham: Great relaxing vacation
The hotel was great and awesome staff. Friendly and very helpful. Kennedy at the pool side bar was awesome and remembered us and always had a drink ready once he saw us coming. Hercules from the entertainment staff is a great person and fun to hang out with. He was there every day saying hello and playing volleyball with us. At night he was again there to see how we were doing and made sure to invite us to the evening events and the disco. Overall, the hotel is small but very nice and clean. Riu Merengue: Great R&R!!
Nice place for a weeks vacation in the DR. While it was not the Ritz it certainly was worth the price we paid.
Generally : Clean and well kept Hotel although rooms could do with a little update and refinish. Water pressure is iffy and failed a few times but a call to reception got it reasonably fixed within a couple of hours - However be prepared for a testy person at the other end of the line when you call in to follow up.
Food : Merengue has only 2 dining areas - The Steak House, which was o[... read more]nly open for dinner once during the week we visited, and the Italian Restaurant which was turned into the only daily Buffet place. Food though was reasonably good (pan fried Mahe mahe and grouper were the best), accept at the pool side snack bar which only served the same fare every day - overcooked burgers (perhaps justified), pasta, fried /baked chicken, salad and fries until 6.00pm! Only problem in the dining area was flies! netting at the open windows would probably have helped. The Bachata (sister hotel next door) where you can also enjoy lunch but not dinner as part of the deal, did not appear to have this problem.
Pool: Didn't step into it even once as we were there to enjoy the beach and the ocean!! so no comment.
Beach: Nice and clean, although, expect the water to be choppy as it's on the Atlantic side. No shortage of beach chairs. Towels may be a problem occasionally.
Sea sports: Not much to choose from. Lousy to non-existent snorkeling sites in the vicinity and if you Scuba you'll be disappointed.
Service: Staff are generally friendly although you may cross the odd exception.

Senator Puerto Plata Hotel: Resort has gone downhill
This was our forth time at this resort. We will not return. The resort has gone downhill. From rats scurrying in the lobby to cockroaches on the buffet and large bugs in the room. We had a large bug lost in our room somewhere. We don't know what is was because it scurried out of a sandal too fast and climbed the curtains but it was quite large. The front desk offered to fumigate our room but I couldn't stay in the room knowing that was in there so we asked to change rooms which they accommodated[... read more]. They used to have something going on in the lobby each evening so you would have something to do after dinner but they have done away with that as well. :( We made the best of it and had a great time with our friends anyway. This used to be a great resort It's sad to see it go downhill like this.

Marien Puerto Plata Hotel: Not a four star
The food was good, the staff was excellent, the reception, lobby and pool areas were beautiful and very clean. The resort beyond the pool area didn't seem to merit attention by the resort staff. We arrived at the tail end of a hurricane, but the walkways to the rooms weren't swept of debris even once in the week we stayed there. The beach seemed to be largely ignored, with litter and seaweed covering the beach. Inside our room, the air conditioning worked very well despite being very loud. There[... read more] was also plenty of hot water for showers. There was not however, a deadbolt or chain to be fastened for security while in the room, the towels all looked like rags with holes and frayed edges, the one soap/shampoo dispenser in the shower had a foul smelling cleanser in it. There is absolutely no barrier to sounds, from the music of the entertainment, to the voices of the other guests in the building.

Blue Bay Villas Doradas: Very good place to stay Nice people.
I was really happy with the resort, food and staff. I would have liked to see a main bar in the entrance that everyone can use - not just VIP. I found it was missing a "gathering" spot in the main area.
Also the sales people on the beach were a little much - a closed off area where they don't have access is highly recommended.
Aside from that we really enjoyed our time in the sun!

Marien Puerto Plata Hotel: Be Live Marien Puerto Plata
We just returned from a 7 night stay at the Be Live Marien in Puerto Plata. We flew with Sunwing which I cannot say enough about. The flight both ways were on time, the crew were great, they had a good selection of food and drinks. The hotel transfers were fine and our rep at the hotel was easy to locate and was available 24/7. As with any vacation we had our good experiences while some were just ok. The first room they gave us which was in building one was just not acceptable for anyone. You co[... read more]uld not open the balcony door it was so rusted out, the hinges on the tv and armoir stand were all rusty. The inside of the bathtub was all peeling and when you closed the curtains there were moth holes all through them and water was leaking in under the door as it was raining heavily when we arrived. When we went back to reception they did find us another room without any hassle and that room was good it was in building three.
The pool was amazing, very big and every morning was cleaned and all the chairs lined up for the day. There were lots of chairs and palapas and we never had an issue finding one, the hotel was about 1/2 to 2/3 thirds full while we were there I would say.
The beach area was ok, we stayed at Grand Paradise in January and the beach is much nicer there and the water blue. They have had a very rainy season and the rain has done a lot of damage to the beach which is not the hotels fault but they could clean it up a little better.
The buffet restaurant was ok but everything tasted the same and we found a lot of things to taste sweet. But you certainly would not starve. The staff in the buffet were very friendly and quick to see to your every need.
The front desk staff were very good and spoke good English in fact we never encountered a staff that wasn't friendly and any time we needed anything the hotel was very quick to accommodate.
We found the A-La-Cartes ok, I loved the Meditterranean but my husband hated it, I chose all the right things on the menu I guess. The staff noticed that my husband did not like his dish and they came right over and had him chose something else. They apologized for him not liking it so even though he was not impressed with the food we could not fault the service at all.
The Brazillean Restaurant looked very nice, the meat that they served was good it was the side dishes on the buffet that let them down. Not very warm and the potatoes and rice were dried out but once again the staff were great and very attentive.
Tha animation team work hard. The water aerobics were fun, a few of the shows at night were good, we did not see them all and during the day they had plenty of activities if you wanted them.
We only went out of the hotel once to go on the Cable Car. We did the city tour through our hotel in January so this time we just took a taxi to do the car by ourselves. We got the taxi from the lobby our driver was great, he waited for us while we went up the mountain and then brought us back.
The clientele while we were there was very European, German, Polish and Russian. We made many new friends and enjoyed all the different Nationalities.
Overall the hotel is ok, if you get it for the right price you will have a good time. I think if they remodel their rooms and clean up the beach this hotel would be stunning.

Marien Puerto Plata Hotel: Great Fun!
The buildings were a bit dated, but well maintained. The pool was beautiful, but the beach was lackluster - probably due to the torrential rain. Food was decent, the meditteranean restaurant is surprisingly good. Wine at the buffet is awful, but ok in the restaurants. Animation staff are fantastic. No swim up bar. Bars close at 2 on weekends and 1 on weekdays which was weird.

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada: The Best One Yet!
The Iberostar Costa Dorada certainly exceeded our expectations! The grounds were beautifully kept, the food was exceptional and the staff were fantastic! Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada: Meh, it's okay
This hotel was okay. Nothing more, nothing less. The grounds were well kept, if unremarkable. The rooms were clean, but basic. The food was great on selection, lacking on execution. The staff was attentive while also remaining distant and uninterested. The beach was a tease to what other beaches in the DR can offer.
While there is nothing at all wrong with this resort, we spent our 7 days there constantly saying "Meh, it's okay". Another traveler that we became friends with asked us if [... read more]we would recommend this resort to our friends at home and it was very difficult to say either yes or no without a laundry list of reasons why.
We booked here specifically to be close to the mountainous areas out Puerto Plata in order to venture out 4-5 days of our week. Because of the torrential rains experienced in this area over the last month, this was not possible, so we found ourselves confined to the resort a little more than we had hoped.
This is not to bash the resort completely, there was a lot of good here, just not one bit of great that we could identify. Food selection was one of the best we have seen on any resort, there was just none of it that was all that great. The nightly shows had some of the best props and sets I have ever seen, but the performers looked like they wanted to be anywhere but on that stage. There was never a wait for drinks at the bar, or in the restaurants, but trying to find a smile on most of the staff's faces was like searching for a needle in a haystack.
I would recommend this resort for large groups looking for something to please everyone, young families and budget travelers if you can get a deal on the price. I would look elsewhere for couples and families with older children.

VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort: Mucho Excellente Resort
My wife and I chose the Royal Package, and we were not disappointed. From the time we arrived, right up until the time we left. Lets start with the arrival. Upon entering the resort, we were greeted with a cool refreshing cocktail. Immediately upon checking in, we were taken up to the "Vista Lounge" which is a perk for Premium and Royal upgrades. International alcohol brands and a beautiful Air Conditioned lounge with Sofas and relaxing music, what a start to our vacation. There we met Karen, th[... read more]e Manager of the Vista Lounge. She gave us a quick debriefing of what the resort had to offer while we were having another cocktail and some snacks. We then proceeded to our room, 2308 third floor in the Catalina wing. Beautiful room, King size bed, balcony over looking the resort and Ocean through the Palm trees, Paradise! Within minutes our baggage arrived.
We spent most of our time down at the Beach, in the Private Area with our Cushion loungers and Balinese bed. Here we had our 2 waiters taking care of us all day and all week with food and drink. I have to mention their names because of the great job they did. Aquilino and Amable kept us entertained with great service and conversation for the entire week, and Felipe setting our loungers and Balinese beds for us. We learned some Spanish, and they practiced their English, 5+ stars for these 3 guys. Honorable mention has to go to Elvin, bartender at the Beach bar. He put a show on every time he made a drink, flipping bottles and glasses, always a big smile. The other 2 Honorable mention goes to the Vintage Club employees, Jose and Verenice, she makes the greatest Spanish coffee, which we had everyday. Also to our lady who kept our room clean and well stocked, I unfortunately forgot her name. The only downside is the vendors on the beach, for the most part a simple Ola and no grassias and they would move on. But there were some very aggressive vendors that took a little more convincing to just move on. We did end up buying some souvenirs during the week, and by the end of the week were on a first name basis with many of them.
The food at the buffet was good, nothing spectacular. We ate at the Specialty restaurants every night for supper, another perk of the Royal package, and that food and service was very good. Our reservations were all handled by the Vintage Club rep, and were never a problem to get our choice. The Beach food was also pretty good, just eating on the Beach was great enough. The house wine is not the greatest, they should upgrade that.
The nightly entertainment at the outdoor Theater was also very good. Different theme every night with music and Dancers, and getting the crowd involved, you want to get there early to get a good seat, it is worth the waiting time.
At this resort, all the staff are very hard workers and always have a smile, indeed a pleasure meeting so many of them. We felt very safe here on the premises and on the beach, Security everywhere.
The only bad thing unfortunately, the weather was not co-operative, lots of rain during the week, but that did not stop us from having a great vacation, we still ended up with a decent tan.
Overall we were very impressed with this Resort and will be returning here in the future, we would recommend it to everyone.
An added note, tipping for your services go a long way, we were very appreciative for all the people that took good care of us, we arrived as strangers, and left as family and friends. "Mucho Excellente"

Viva Heavens by Wyndham: Small resort, overall so so
Overall we had a good experience but not great. Food and drinks were good and I liked the unlimited a la cartes. That being said our shower leaked so the floor was always wet and the entertainment was under whelming.
