First visit to Sunscape Puerta Plata November 26 - December 4, 2023. Sunwing vacations from Toronto.
Booked Adult Only Sun Club King Room which was very nice. Well-equipped, clean towels every day, coffee maker and supplies everyday, mini fridge restocked everyday.
Good food with several options available.
Bar at beach was great and even had service to your chair. Lots of lounge chairs and shade. Clean washroom available at the beach. Beach is beautiful, clean and huge and you can walk for [... read more]miles in either direction.
Hotel grounds are gorgeous and well-maintained.
Sun Club staff were very attentive and eager to help with any requests.
We hope to return in the future.

Ocean El Faro: Nice resort, but
The resort is very nice with lots of entertainment. We really liked the silent disco event in the main lobby. Bowling was fun and pool activities were good. The lazy river was fun. BUT booking restaurants was a pain. You have to get up at 6:30 to be in line before 7 then wait in line TIL 8 to make a reservation and if you are not in the first ten to twenty good luck getting a time before 9pm. It appears the privilege and El Beso adults only sections get to book ahead of the normal guests, even f[... read more]or the restaurants that are listed as no reservations required. It kinda makes you feel second class. The resort is big. Some rooms are a 15 minute walk to the lobby. Food in the restaurants was pretty good but the buffet was hit or miss. Pools were good, The beach had weeds and is rough.

Ocean El Faro: Big improvement from our stay in 2020
First time we stayed at Ocean El Faro was Jan 2020 and noted several concerns in a review. Well we just got back from resort last night after a week with other family members.. I can say they really have made considerable improvements.. Had a swim out room family side again and noticed daily attention to cleaning pool vs no cleaning before. (there was dust clouds when you walked in pool 2020), Main common pool had lots of chairs and many umbrellas , walk around bar service. Beach set up with lo[... read more]ts of chairs and thatched palapas. For softer sand to vs some stoney area, the unused property to the left is better. This is an example of attitude and attention given by most of the staff we encountered this trip. There was a difference in service levels between Family side and Adult side of the main Buffet and the family side staff were quick to serve coffee and refills etc and were very friendly, not so much on adult side. It seemed the quality of food in the buffet was a bit low this trip...maybe grocery store inflation ? All the other restaurants, bars etc were very good to excellent. Food as described on menu was delivered cooked just right, in timely manner, drinks provided and quick for refills. Staff very friendly.. we see they seem to enjoy their job. Room was cleaned daily bed change mid week, asked for extra towels first day and they kept that up daily. (however my daughter had to ask several time) Good friendly service fairly consistent all around the resort. HIGH Score for Steak and Italian and Sekura. I may be remembering wrong but, there was a beach side restaurant we used on first visit but all three near the beach are restricted to El Besso or Privileged. We inquired at all 3 and told no for us. Only beach area food is BBQ Burgers and Hot dogs for lunch (precooked and siting around) Ocean Blue and Sand opens their Villa Marina for lunch for everyone (stayed there last year) Fairly consistent shuttle from lighthouse to lobby and stops anywhere in between with a double cart. Really like the new wrist band / key card. Happy to recommend Ocean El Faro to anyone who asks.
Hotel and property is quality. The renovations to the Grand Lobby make this property attractive and functional. Stunning gardens, amazing staff and service, so attentive and friendly. The property and amenities have all you need it’s just the right size to explore but walkable which is the best experience. The waterfront dining is one of the great features in a vacation destination. We loved the meandering pool through the property a place for everyone to enjoy. Royalton CHIC Punta Cana: 6 out of 10 in our group got sick.
First of all the serving staff in all the restaurants went above and beyond. The concierge desk needs to act like a concierge desk and ensure what they promise actually happens. Those folks need to communicate with the restaurants and the front desk. It was so frustrating that they didn't seem to work as a team to esure the guests enjoy their stay.
We were a group of 10 - 5 couples. We paid extra for a specific rooms and 3 of the couples didn't get the rooms we paid for - front desk finally g[... read more]ave us cash after numerous visits asking for a refund.
We asked conceirge desk to please reserve a table for 10 at the restaurants. Out of the 5 reservations only 2 were actually booked eventhough we went several days to ensure a table of 10 was booked. The restaurant staff would do all possible to cover for the lack of communication from the concierge desk and would manage to seat us all together after waiting a little while.
Rooms were missing clothes irons/steamers, blow dryers and our room door didn't even lock from the inside. The iron and blow dryer requests were quickly resolved. The lock on our door was never repaired. The light in the shower as well as the magnifying mirrow light also did not work in many of the 5 rooms booked.
Maintenance crew painted the handrails in Bldg 6. There were no signs anywhere and we got paint on our hands & clothes. We advised the concierge. However no one ever bothered to put up any "wet paint" signs.
*ALERT* Bar by the pool/ocean does not wash their glasses. We witnessed and refused drinks several times when we saw them throwing out the reminants of other guests drink and refilling them with drinks for us. When confronted they were not pleased but complied and actually washed the glasses with soap & water. We experienced this several times during the week.
There is a little bar off to the right of the restaurants. We ordered some drinks there after supper 2 of the wives were severly ill that night.
The entertainment group tried their best to keep everyone motivated. However they should have organized the kareokee in the sports bar and had other entertainment for the majority of the guests who do not enjoy that. We were there 4 years ago and we couldn't wait to go back. So we brought 8 friends with us this time. We wished they had brought back the rock band and the artist to make up for 2 of the nites that only had dance parties. Koodos to Ramirez - "oh my Jesus" if it wasn't for him the guests would be falling asleep. He kept everyone going but in a respectful way that made you want to participate in the activities.
The sports group were better the first time we were there... one of the yoga instructors didn't look like he wanted to be there, we ould barely hear him.
4 of the group were extremely ill and some continue to be ill 2 weeks after being back even after taking antibiotics etc. My doctor advised that I was her 4th patient to come from the D.R. sick.
The resort is under renovations that are really needed. Unfortunately due to this experience we will not be returning to Chic. Apparently they have been bought out by Marriott lets hope they can bring this place back to how it was 4-5 years ago.

Majestic Mirage Punta Cana All Suite Resort: Premium Resort
The resort is a a very nice high end resort. The courtyard at night is breath taking. The rooms are all high end and done up very well. I do think the roof top terrace is overrated, would prefer a 2nd bathroom to a terrace that is too hot and never used. The food quality is good, portion size and cooking of steaks, med, well, well done are inconsistent.
The biggest attribute to the facility is the service and hospitality. The beaches are nice but do have daily seaweed and venders are present da[... read more]ily all day. The WIFI is descent but we did have to get new User and password ID 4 times. The room keys failed only once during our stay, this is a common occurrence regarding room keys. In general, Punta Cana is getting very pricy, risk advisories have been upgraded to Exercise a high degree of caution due to crime.
Roughly $600 per day for 2 people compared to $225 per day at a nearby island.

Bahia Principe Explore El Portillo: Great Resort
Great food, spotless rooms, beautiful beach and pools. The resort is not new but very well maintained. Our group did have issues with room key cards not working multiple times. This was a hassle as the trip back to the main lobby to get new key cards for our rooms was not short. When you are ready to head back to your room to have a shower before dinner or to turn in for the night a trip back to the lobby to get access to your room is not welcomed.
I had been to this complex twice before and it had changed into complete craphole. Uncomfortable beds, cleaning stuff that cleans room only if its convinient for them, cart drivers that only stop on their stops and will ride past you even if you flag them unless you are a cute columbian girl or one of their buddies. then they can stop in the middle of a route and spend 5 minutes chit chatting with them with people in the cart waiting. Rude jaded stuff at the restaurant and bars, a reception d[... read more]esk that does nothing to fix issues unless you come to the lobby and start very noisy scandal. Absolutely attrocious food that had poisoned my family and we spent 1 week of 2 going back and forward to the hospital to deal with major food poisonning, both my kids and my wife had to be hospitalized with iv and it costed 6k+ usd to my travel insurance.
Beach was ok but it was full of sand flies that covered legs of people with hundreds of red wounds. Pool was ok, but a lot of tiles were broken off on the bottom and my kids cut their feet on sharp edges and had to walk with bandaids for a day.
Hotel had 2 working coffee machines, ones where you hit button and get automatic coffee. No expresso bars anywhere. Forget about fancy latte or anything else along those lines in a country where they grow coffee. Aparently thats too much to ask. A buffet only has a couple types of tea. They serve coffee only at breakfast. They will not bring you coffee any other time. And of cause, no decaff...
To make things even worse, they had very bad free wifi which pretty much make you buy paid package which promisses up to 9 devices access to it, but nether me or people at customer service were able to connect any devices beyond one i had paid for it with and they told me they will reimburse the charge. Guess what, in order to do that, they tried to make me sign paper that forbids me from saying any negative things about that hole of a hotel. Oh and they did not tell me that this is what i am signing. They just said its a report that i submit for refund. I torn it into pieces and thew it in their faces.
Last, air transat staff were rude and unhelpful. They used to have people who could speak fluently with you, but not any more. Now its couple locals who sit and watch youtube all day and have 0 interest in helping you. They were so rude that they started mocking me and my wife when we did not understand what they ment when they were talking to us.
I will not going to ANY BAHIA PRINCIPE hotel ever never again.

Melia Caribe Beach Resort: Good and Bad
The Hotel it self was very beautiful, the food was above average, the room, pool and weather were also good. That was the good. The service at the lobby bar and in 2 of the 3 allacarts were horrible. Tried to get water for our room everyday was like pulling teeth from an angry lion. Friday to Monday if you were not a local, forget trying to get food little alone water was impossible. Would never go there again.

Catalonia Royal La Romana: Great resort - terrible entertainment.
Everything at this resort was perfect or near perfect - beaches, rooms, pools, food, restaurant selection, etc.....except the nightly entertainment which was simply terrible! For starters, you could not trust the advertised programming on the resort app, both for times and activity. For example, our first night was supposed to have karaoke but there was simply someone singing, which was most nights. The entertainers were not loud and the tempo was such that I felt I was at a resort for senior ci[... read more]tizens, not an adults only. And everything ended by about 10:30 PM! At an adults only resort! I know kids that go to bed later! And there is no discotheque or music bar to runaway to. After a couple of nights we realized - by pure chance - that there was a theatre at the sister family resort next door. We were not given a schedule or app for this programming but found something on a wall while walking around. We took in a few of the shows put on - including the typical Michael Jackson (been there, done that, but awesome in the face of absolute boredom) and one circus show that was good considering where we were, and what we'd been exposed to (or not). We also felt the activities at the beach were lacking. No drink testing, no beach volleyball (admittedly the beach is not very flat and wide for this), etc. There were dance lessons but frankly they were annoying being right next to lounging area if you were trying to read or sleep under the sun. All in all, a beautiful place that is in great shape, but completely bored by the lack of fun activities and entertainment.
Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana Hammock: Hotel & Staff Excellent
The hotel, room and staff were 5*, the restaurants and food were 3*.
We would not go back because of the restaurant situation. You did not know from one day to the next what was going to be open or shut. We think it was probably that the place was not full so opening all the restaurants was not efficient business practice.

Majestic Elegance Punta Cana: Real Majestic
Let me pointed first that this review applies mostly for Elegance Club Adult only packages. Regular packages does not have these perks so take it under consideration when choosing package.
Resort itself is "a magic" - it was designed with a mind that rain in tropical is regular event and normally you need umbrella(and preferable huge one) but not for this resort - it is designed in the way that walking from any room in any building to practically all restaurants and buffets as well as to night [... read more]show hall and disco club you can travel under the cover so no umbrella needed(only Argentinian Stakehouse and See and Sea restaurants require short walk not covered by the roofed path (Stake house is about 25-30M and S&S is little more- about 50m from nearby covered path)
Food variety is big enough - so I think that everyone can find not only something to eat but something which you really like and prefer to eat.
Entertainment at night:
Shows are similar to most of hotels in Punta Cana area so nothing special but still enjoyable especially (because) drinks are served so you don't need to interrupt you relax time by staying in line at the bar(unless you want it :) ) - just sit , order and watch.
Special kudos to Disco Club - most of the time you will hear word time hits not just domestic bachata or merengue (some DJ in other hotels just ignore the fact that resort's disco is for mostly North America and Europe tourist ). Also it is really air conditioned so you can enjoy dancing for long time). There is also sport bar which is really cool to watch any sport event in real time (opened from 2pm till 2am) - HUGE tv's , bar and games.
Beach:
While nearby Colonial hotel and most notable Royalton (Hadeout Adult only section ) suffered huge damage from recent hurricanes (never thought that it was possible but fact is that sea clamed these beaches and now these hotels have steep cliffs instead of smooth beach) this hotel wasn't damaged and beach is perfect as well as entry to the sea - no rocks or underwater grass)
And what I mostly like about this beach is Bali beds - only one caveat - there are not enough of them so you have to wake up very early in order to be able to enjoy them. After 9am they all gone regardless weather (unless rain is pouring all day and morning).
Service:
VERY, VERY good. Attentive, polite and trying hard to make you vacation "wrinkle free".
Huge kudos to our battler Olbis - if you get him consider yourself lucky (if not ask for him) - practically all your wishes, desires and request will come trough - just ask.
Girls at the beach bar Angelina and Maxima will serve you right "into the bed" (but don't forget to tip of course) - so there no point to go and get drinks by yourself - lay down and relax.
This is was my third time at this hotel and I tell you definitely not last.

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana: Biter Sweet Review
The property is charming and very clean and quiet
We liked the fact that it was a very small facility.
We were sold as adult only and this is not the case.
But not many kids were there, certainly due to the cost and no kids' activity.
Every employee was extremely nice and helpful.
But
The food was really basic for the overall cost and rating.
As well, all extra activities such as Spa were very expensive.
Also, a lot of clients had to deal with extensive mosquito bites, including my wife[... read more] (some clients suggested that it was bed bugs due to the enormous amount of bites)

Majestic Mirage Punta Cana All Suite Resort: Excellent resort
The infrastructure, the staff, the food and the beach were all just as amazing as it was on our first stay a year ago. We booked the adults only Club level. The room was huge and the extra amenities including free daily golf (plus $45 USD cart fee) at the Punta Blanca Golf Course (on site) was a nice bonus.

Catalonia Royal La Romana: Very pleased with our stay!!
We found the grounds to be very nice featuring mature landscaping, nice palm trees, stone work, pools and adult lobby/ hotel and restaurants area.
The rooms outside of the newly built building,I found that they are backlogged on keeping up with the maintenance items for the rooms; although I found that they are nice suites that are well thought out in design and functionality.
Sand around the single loungers needs to be sifted, not just racked.
Things I would change is adding fresh s[... read more]heets daily to the beds at the beach and a bigger towel service section. This should increase.
Overall I see an effort to improve visible common area upgrades and maintenance crews working hard which demonstrates that Catalonia Hotel Resorts really take care of their properties.
I was pleased with the staff and service workers.
Beach is amazing!!
Food was great!
Entertainment was great as well!
Overall 4.7* out of 5.
