Starfish Cayo Guillermo: You should go there if tropic sun, sea and some comfort is your goal.

I was at Sercotel June 12-19 of 2018. 1. Road… I traveled with SUNWING and had no serious problems. On the way back I was kicked off your room at 12 pm, while having an actual taking off at 12 am. I advise to plan this time extra carefully. Shatter bus takes about an hour. 2. Weather… was nearly perfect, 32C at midday and 22C at sunrise. Some wind and some rain were presented, just a bit, just for contrast. 3. Beach… is really close from every room. Smooth and bold sandy strip is ar [... read more]ound 100 meters wide. Water is very clean and clear, surf is mild. One real drawback is shallowness. I had to walk 100 meters or so in the water just to start swimming, it less than 1 meter. But this is perfect for small kids. 4. Room… I changed rooms once. Air-conditioner (AC) didn’t work at my first room, and it had no remote neither other possibility to control AC in my second room. Shortly speaking, there was no TV in my room. Other people had problems too. I advise to check carefully everything in your room BEFORE you start unpacking. I had a free safety box. 5. Room again… There are 2-storey small cottages. Most of the rooms have balconies or patios. Rooms are concrete boxes and need AC severely. I had actual hot water all the time. Bugs weren’t a real problem. The bed was pretty good. 6. Food…It was 4 stars food by Cuban standard. It is a way better than I actually need, by mine standard: freshly cooked fresh beef, pork, chicken and 2-3 kind of fish, some fruits and vegetables, rice, potato, pasta, bread, some dairy. They also have a lot of mixtures of who knows of what. I never care. No a-la carte. 7. Evening show…As per my view it was pretty good, but I am not big lover. 7. Bars…. Lobby bar was open non-stop and had coffee, beer and local booze. Bar at the pool worked in the daytime only. Despite of many critics in this forum, snack bars was working a way above average. You can actually eat there from12pm to 5pm. It is rare thing from my Cuban experience. 8. Pool….Has several bodies, including one for small kids. It looks clean and well maintained. All the chaise lounges are new and clean (including beach’s ones). As usual, almost no shadow around the pool. 9. Conclusion…it is 4 stars Cuban resort, it needs renovation here and there, but not that bad, not that bad at all. You should go there if tropic sun, sea and some comfort is your goal. But it is definitely not a vanity fair. 10. Tripcentral gave me a very good price.

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Not impressed

Stayed at Grand Muthu in Cayo Guillermo in June for 7 days. The resort itself looks great. Everything is new. 3 big pools to choose from, lots of lounge chairs (of course, it was low season),but the layout wasn't great. The villas are so spread out, depending on which one you stay at, you might have a lot of walking to do. We were in Villa 2 which was connected to the lobby, right next to the buffet and most of the ala carte's. And our patio was close to the pools, so we definitely lucked out.  [... read more] The best parts: Amazing bartenders. The coffee bar in the lobby made amazing cappuccinos, and if you sat down they were at your table right away to see if you needed a drink. The swimup bar had 3 bartenders that rotated. All 3 were awesome. Great service, always on top of things...especially Dani. Sweetest guy I met there. There was a snack bar opened for lunch and they made a huge pot of Cuban stew (so good!), and a mojito bar, and the food wasn't horrible. ...and that's it. The rest was a disaster. It's low season so the day before we flew out we received an email that the buffet would be closed for lunches. Which left the 24hr snack bar. The snack bar that ran out of food all day, and half the time told us they just weren't serving food. One day we were told we couldn't use the ketchup and the server picked it up off our table and gave it to another table...and that was after waiting for over an hour for a couple hot dogs and fried to feed 4 kids under 5. The snack bar had ice cream in the afternoon...but it was usually just an empty tub. They had menus but didn't give them out because if they were making food, it was usually just hot dogs and ham and cheese sandwiches. I figured we'd at least eat better at the ala carte's...tried Indian, Italian and Seafood. They had great reviews. The seafood wasn't too bad, but they only were serving half the menu. Italian was pretty good, but also only serving half the menu (they didn't have tomatoes to make most of the food they offered). Indian was horrible. There's no menu so they service fish and chicken only until they run out and then you only get beef. All of which tasted horrible. The buffet was...eh. But because it's low season they only fill half of it. So there isn't much to choose from....and they run out of everything so if you eat something one day, you probably won't see it for the rest of the week. I know it's Cuba and the The entertainment staff spent a lot of time complaining about all the hours they worked...then spent most of it hiding in corners on their cell phones or sitting with guests asking for clothes for them, their kids, their nieces and nephews...everyday. I don't mind if someone asks or hints but EVERYDAY?!?! On the weekend there were so many locals staying at the resort, the entertainment staff just stopped speaking English all together so we had no idea what they were doing, what games were being played... There was a lot of rain one night and our room started flooding. We went to the front desk for towels and they refused to give us any. There's a kids pool with a slide/play structure in it which I thought was great...until I realized that the ground is rough and scratched my sons feet so bad the first day that he couldn't go to the beach for a couple days. Oh, and our patio door was left unlocked by the maid 3 of the 6 days she was in the room...good thing we used the safe....which broke on day 3 and we had to use my friends safe. Never going back...which is sad because I heard such good things about Cayo Guillermo and it was our first time there.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Not as expected

The hotel itself was nice. Rooms were clean. Booked this hotel because of the good reviews on food. Disappointed as all meals food was cold and not much variety. Very little English spoken by staff. Little lighting along paths to rooms. Beach was kept clean. Pools no deeper than a metre. If you like to eat, don't recommend it.

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

I travelled to this resort the week of June 8-15,2018. It was myself,my husband 7 month old baby, and friend with her 5 year old. We were all super excited as the reviews were so great and this was the first time I read good reviews for food in Cuba.(I have been 9 times). IT WAS AWFUL! The food every day was the exact same thing like literally the exact same mon-sunday. The al a cartes were garbage especially the Indian..Italian was mediocre at best. I totally get its low season but you cant cut these kind of corners when you have already taken away so many other things because of the low season you should lower your prices or not advertise the 24 hr snackbar if that's the case. I think the worst was the amount of local people who came in and were ignorant rude and acted like the world was ending and it was every man for themselves. Now I'm not saying locals shouldn't travel and I have always said Cubans are the most polite people I have ever met,but certainly not here, at one point a man took the ice cream scoop out of my hand before I had even started serving myself and friends child I was apalled and thought it was absolutely disgusting. Once food was gone it was rarely replenished. The beach was not your typical beautiful Cuban beach you could not see the bottom and there was a lot of seaweed, this the reason everyone Goes to playa pillar for the day(added expense when you have paid for the beach already buy booking the trip as you have to pay for umbrellas or tan chairs).The rooms were nice the hotel itself was beautiful, pools were great and Dani at the swim up bar was incredible but that's it. The rest of the staff would sit around tell us how hard they were worked, Skex for things (my daughter's clothing) when we leave and to not give or leave anything to the maids. The lifeguard Actually asked us to buy him some cigars because he cNt afford them. Even the management wasn't the greatest we had a huge thunderstorm and our room started to flood as we were on the main floor...they hesitated giving us extra towels to help keep the water out ...like are you kidding me? It passed fairly quickly so we ended up being ok but they definitely lacked hospitality. This was our first trip with our baby and it was ruined. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS RESORT! I hope that readers think twice!! maybe in the higher season its great I cannot say,but I would not reccomend this place in the low for sure.

Sol Cayo Coco: Amazing Resort

This was our 3rd time there this year, Feb, Apr and June. It is a amazing place. The staff treated us like we were so special. When we walked up to the reception desk they said WELCOME HOME which made us feel so good. The staff there are very special from the lobby bar to the actvity guys and girls to the pool bar staff the staff in the buffet from breakfast, lunch and dinner amazing people. My husband and I call this our second home. I would recommend this resort. Cannot wait to go back next year. If you want a great vacation go to Sol Cayo Coco.

Melia Cayo Coco: Amazing Resort

Everything was excellent, the room was perfect, the grounds were well looked after, the employee's were very friendly and helpful, the food was excellent, the pool was well looked after, the ocean was awesome, and the weather was great. The only thing I wished they had was a bank at the resort. We needed some cash and had to take the bus to a market, but the bank machine wasn't working. Had to go back a second day to try again, and then it was working.

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Astonishing!!!

As of the hotel Grand Muthu Guillermo...i was absolutely impressed for only being newly opened. I love Cuba..been many many times..this hotel was 5☆ also for all staff, the amazing dedication and happiness they all bring to the resort makes the atmosphere of your vacation memorable!! Food was very good..chefs were at your service to have your meal just the way you want it. My tip to those who worry about the food...You choose what you like..just like at a restaurant back home. The rooms were excellent the maids worked very hard also the gardeners no one may not notice but they were very humble and you see how hard they work to make the resort breathtaking. Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Great

The staff made us feel very welcome. Good room, food and entertainment. Beach was gorgeous. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the resturant and having to wait over an hour for our food to start arriving. Other than that, I enjoyed everything.

Melia Cayo Coco: Relaxing vacation in Cayo Coco

The grounds are recovering very nicely from Hurricane Irma - the gardeners are working around the clock. They lost many palm trees but there is still lots of shade. We are fist time visitors to this resort. I was happy it was an adult only. The beach is wide and beautiful and there is always a breeze to shield us from the sun and humidity. Our room was on block 73 on  [... read more]the upper floor-it is a large room with great AC and amenities. They do have satellite TV in many languages. There is hot water all you want and the pressure is excellent. Must say that the mattress is very hard; it looks like they haven't changed mattresses since the property has been built...we complained and they eased it up a bit by putting a blanket under the sheet. We had a problem with the fridge and they came and changed it very quickly. The food was better than I had in Cuba so far but it can be repetitive and some items are not there every day. They have an Argentinian chef and a Mexican pastry chef. You won't go hungry here. The service at the dining room can be hit or miss. Some of the waiters and really great and some of them are just busy clearing the tables. I experienced better service in Mexico. The beach has lots of palapas and loungers. I heard that they used to have waiters at the beach for your drinks but they no longer have them due to cut backs....I do not understand such hotels; they want tourists to come and yet instead of making improvements they take away services. The nightly entertainment is superb. They bring the artists from outside the hotel. The pool area seem very clean. We have not tried any of the a la carte restaurants. There is a double decker bus that stops on all the hotels - it costs 5 pesos per person and you can hop on and off as much as you want. There are no towns in the island, but there is a shopping centre and if you take the bus all the way, you reach Cayo Guillermo, which is beautiful in itself and you can get off at Playa Pilar - this is a really beautiful beach with crystal clear shallow water, loungers, palapas and a restaurant. I highly recommend going there. You can visit the rest of the Melia chain hotels in both Cayo Coco and Guillermo but you are only allowed to visit one a day. Make sure you ask the hotel reception to give you a voucher so when you arrive at the hotel you want to visit, you get a bracelet so you can use their facilities. We visited Melia Jardines del Rey. Do yourselves a favour and skip this huge hotel -not worth it. When you walk from the Melia Cayo Coco to the Sol Cayo Coco, which is next one on the left side, walk all the way behind that abandoned building, which used to be a discoteque and you will see a different beach. Crystal clear waters as well and a public one with free loungers and a kiosk for drinks. Melia Cayo Coco is a place to relax - there is no loud music during the day. On the other side of the hotel there is the Pullman hotel. If you want to visit, make sure you walk from the front of the hotel as the guards at the back won't let you go in. Regarding wi-fi - it is only accessible thru a 1 hr card you can purchase at the front desk. There is also no free wi-fi at their airport. We had a beautiful relaxing vacation but I don't think we will be back because we never visit a hotel twice.

Melia Costa Rey: Great resort!

We found the Pullman Cayo Coco was very clean! Staff was friendly! Service was good! Food was surprisingly good! Beach wasn't like the other Cuban beaches I have been too was kinda disappointed but not surprising after last year's hurricane. Overall great resort!

Melia Costa Rey: Nice resort!

The room itself was alright and room service was great. We had to change rooms as the ceiling started to leak and also the toilet did not work properly. Toilet problem remained in new room though but other than that it was fine. Buffet was alright as well but it would be nice to see some seefood instead of keeping it all for the collection section. Only experiences I did not enjoy was that every time I asked questions twice at the front desk, I could tell I was "bothering them". No smiles and abrupt answers from them. Every morning I had coffee in the coffee/tea shop and I loved the view and the quiet there. Also, the same waiter was waiting for me with a latte and a great smile (thanks!) . But my last morning he was not there and the waitress had a fit (she was screaming and all attitude and gesturing me to leave) when she saw me sitting down (she would not serve me I had to go to the bar) because she could not set up my table for lunch since I was using a table (it was 9 in the morning and her set up was for lunch..the other 30 tables were ready...). The barman had to calm her down. She did the same to another couple. But everything else was great and we enjoyed our stay a lot! Great entertainment teams and very friendly and great shows at night.

Iberostar Origin Daiquiri: Iberostar Daiquiri - run down resort

We are staying in this hotel about 10 years ago and it was very good, but now it's not the case... Resort is completely run out place: All the furniture in the lobby is dirty, ripped, "eaten" by fungus. The smell around bar is not not bearable, the glaces are dirty, as well as the counter. The dishes in the buffet are dirty, with pieces of food. We were forced to leave to another resort closed by "Memories Flamenco".

Melia Costa Rey: Very good resort

Very good resort, quite, clean and fairly new. An excellent entertainment!!! Food is pretty good for Cuba, beach is amazing. Very friendly staff. Kids club is very good. I would definitely go there again.

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Resort is nice, food is not so nice!

The resort room, beach, landscaping and garden are nice. The food in the buffet is always the same. The a la carte Cuban Restaurant served us cold soup, yucky corn appetizer and burnt chicken breast as hard as my shoe. My husband wasn't able to sleep that night thinking how a nice looking restaurant could serve food like that to their guests. I will not book this resort again!

Melia Costa Rey: Beautiful

This was our first time to cuba and we were very impressed. The resort is beautiful and brand new and modern, the pool and beach area was awesome and the staff was amazing as well. The food got a little repetitive but still was not bad. The a la cartes were delicious, italian is a must!! I highly recommend to anyone wanting to visit cuba, also loved that it was the first resort stop from airport only a 15 min drive. We will definitely rebook when we choose cuba again!

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Nice affordable place

We travelled the first week of June and the weather was amazing! The resort was only at 40-50% to capacity so it was very quiet. Our rooms were clean and the beds were comfy. We did have a room mix up when we arrived but we switched rooms with our travel buddies. We tipped our room cleaner every day but we didn’t always get new towels or water. They keep it very clean and of course it was beautiful! If you didn’t have a chair, guys would set them up for you which was great! Overall I was happy with this resort and it was a great vacation.

Grounds, public areas, room: very neat and clean. Beach: very beautiful, clean, sandy, water clear and shallow, can walk out very far out the ocean. So little guests, can count maybe 10 people in the water most times, and people leave the beach at 4 pm, so staff started putting away lounge chairs at around 4:30, so sad, such a beautiful beach and no one stays past 5 pm. Dining service: perhaps due to cancellation of Cubana Airlines, not a lot of guests (I guestimate 100), buffet restaurant was [... read more] closed for lunch on the 4th day for the remainder of our stay. We had to eat at the other two less desirable restaurants. On the last day we were there, we were advised that buffet breakfast will also be closed. This I cannot ascertain because we were leaving. With regard to service at restaurant, I brought this to the attention of the restaurant manager. Staff are slow to serve beverages, beer, water or pop even though we waited for more than 5 minutes. I had orange juice only for 2 days and no juice was available for the remainder of our stay. Staff were very eager to take our plates away. Constantly coming over to ask "are you finished?". I had to finally tell them "when I'm finished, I'll put down my fork and knife and get up, then you can take my plate away. No need to keep asking me." I met someone there who said they took away her plate even though she told them she had not finished yet. We visited our favourite Resort Melia Cayo Guillermo to fish off their pier. Cubana Airlines cancellation didn't seem to affect that resort. There were lots of people in the resort as well as the beach. We have been to other resorts in Cuba for the past 10 years, and we know we don't go to Cuba for food, but the food and dining service in Grand Muthu are less than desirable. Safety issue: at night, path lights leading to our building at oceanfront were not lit. Only the lights on the ground floor along the corridor of our building were, lights on the 2nd and 3rd floors corridors were not switched on. And we were on the 3rd floor. We felt unsafe as we have never seen a security guard at night, unless the compound has cameras, but we are not aware of them. We had to run fast to our room, get in and quickly lock the door behind us.

Memories Flamenco Beach Resort: Friendly Staff

The room was fine, nothing fancy and could use some repairs and updates, but wasn't terrible. The beach is amazing and the staff of the resort make up for any shortcomings with quality of the resort. They make you feel like part of their family. The food was good and a decent selection at lunch and dinner. The mosquitoes were bad in the evening, so bring bug spray.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Friendly people, 5th time to Cuba, 2nd to Melia

We returned three days ago (Jun 8). People were friendly. There was never a line up for a coffee or drink but there was for BBQ during lunch or dinner time. With this resort, I liked the option to take the Melia voucher and go check out other Melia hotels in Cayo Coco and Guilermo. So I recommend you do the same. We are in our midd 40’s so we didn’t like much the idea of having music in the lobby and on the beach, all the time. I think next time we’ll be going to Melia Cayo Coco for adult [... read more]s only. Food there was better, less people and very nice and quiet. You can truly read that book on the beach and fall asleep. What I found really surprising that most tourists are Canadians from Toronto and Montreal leaving so much garbage behind them on the beach (plastic cups, straws, plates). I even found crashed can of coke in the ocean. So sad. Please pick up your garbage behind you. The accommodations were fine. We had a nice ocean view. Since this is our 5th time to Cuba, we knew about food but I was expecting more from Melia. They have good burgers by the pool, omlets, and cheese. What I liked but they didn’t have it on a regular bases is lamb, calamari, beef stew, mahi-mahi fish, and bananas. We always had clean towels, beach towels, enough chairs to lay down on the beach or find the shade.

Melia Cayo Coco: Great Resort

Resort was close to the airport. Food was normal for Cuba. The resort was a quiet resort which was nice. Staff were very friendly. The age of people going to the hotel was mostly older (50+), but there were young people as well.
