Friendly resort

The grounds are beautifully kept. The rooms are clean. The bathroom was newly renovated. The beach is amazing.the food was good. The hotel has many tourists who come back every year. There is a market next to the hotel to buy souvenirs. I was in a standard room which is the least expensive but was very comfortable. I did not have enough towels in the room but the beach towel was what I used for my shower because I was able to get a fresh one every day. The people who put the beach chairs out ex [... read more]pect a tip which is a bit irritating since the chairs are included in the price. I am glad to tip when I want to tip not when it feels like a requirement.

Very good place to vacation

I like the area very much. The garden view rooms need some work. Beds very hard to sleep on and pI'll own to small. But I ijoyed everything regardless. The service in the dining area was great. The resections people could be a little more frendly also. I have been going here for 9 years and will continue. Love the people and the culture.

Huge resort!

Huge place, 2 swim up bars as well as 2 more great big pools. Many bars including an excellent coffee bar! Food was average. Seafood restaurant was excellent, also paid for a lobster dinner one night which was spectacular! Room was average, ocean view was good on the fourth floor. Some staff were friendly especially in the main dining room. Overall was great for the cheap price. Air conditioning worked great which was a first for cuba!

Far from fantastic!!

First glimpse....beautiful. Check in was slow and impersonal. The room was very substandard and the noise level in the hallways was atrocious all week. Very little sleep and terrible food. Thank God the outdoor staff were lovely and very accommodating. Check out was even worse. I wouldn't come back to that resort.....Cuba maybe but not there. Also too many locals drink and puking beside the pool. 👎 Not a good advertisement for future customers.

Good location, great staff

As others said do not stay in the barracks. Upgrade to villas and you will enjoy it. You can upgrade at the hotel which I did. Lots of people from south america. The food tastes not bad but the presentation and the selection are poor. I stayed at Brisas before. It's a better hotel but Atlantico is closer to the public beach. Went only to the seafood restaurant (twice) that I recommend. Ate breakfast and lunch at Benny More or the 24hrs bar. Saw only one show (traditional) and it was very go [... read more]od. The biggest asset is the staff. Come open minded.

Our favorite resort

We just love staying at this resort as the staff is so amazing. They are all so friendly and helpful. I lost my purse and as I got to the front desk one of the staff was just handing it in. We were in the "barracks" and our room was very clean. Our maid was so nice. Again we met so many nice people. Love our breakfast at the 24 hr. bar. Going back again!!

Basic and okay resort

I booked this hotel, standard room ("the barracks"), to meet up with family. Should note that I usually stay at 4.5 or 5 star resorts. Rooms were VERY basic, with no balcony or fridge. Double bed was quite uncomfortable, with springs popping through. Lucky I was on my own so I could maneuvre around them! However the room was quite clean, although old and outdated. Every day there was an inexpensive "special upgrade" offer -- could get a better room for about 40 pesos a week -- but I stay [... read more]ed where I was because my room was just a few doors away from family. Expect upgrade would be worth it if available and booked at resort. Always something decent to eat - nothing fancy and repetitive. Staff overall very good and helpful with a couple of exceptions. Grounds need quite a bit of repair...watch your step! Main hotel pool drained after I arrived for cleaning and maintenance. Apparently quite a bit of work going on to remedy some of these things in time for upcoming travel agent convention at this hotel in next few months. Pirate beach bar very nice - great mojitos and fresh papaya in rum punch. Overall, remember you get what you pay for. Go with an open mind - for the sun (hopefully) and you will likely have a good time :)

Club Amigo our second home

2017 is out 10th visit to Club Amigo. Love the place. Our second home. Wonderful staff. Anna, Yurdondis. Issue this visit was constant renovations and construction. Only 1 restaurant open, main pool drained. Constant fumes from painting, pouring new walkways. We had to pay for an upgrade to the Villa section due to the renovations.

Amazing time!

This was our first trip anywhere. We can't wait to go back! Staff was friendly, food was pretty decent. We went off resort and only found friendly people. The excursions were great and fairly priced. Met some great people from around the world. We both agreed to do 2 weeks next time. There was some construction, but we weren't bothered by it. We upgraded once there to ocean view and loved it. Great snorkeling there as well.

Won't be returning - homophobes!

I went to this hotel knowing that it wasn't a great hotel as I have been here before. I did upgrade to a villa which made a huge difference. There was a group of 5 of us that went for the snorkeling. As always, it was amazing. The reason I won't be returning is because there was a couple that almost weren't permitted into the resort upon arrival. They weren't with us but we got speaking with them and they told us what happened. They are a gay couple that have been together for 5.5yrs. When  [... read more]they arrived, they were told that they weren't allowed to stay at the resort because the resort is a 'family resort' and has 'standards'. After much arguing, they were allowed to stay. This from a resort that allows prostitutes on the beaches (2 guys in our group were groped on the beach one night). It is sickening.

Beautiful resort

Everything was great and very clean but didn't have enough entertainment lots of cubians at resort and beach. And the front desk staff was not helpful or very friendly! I find the more I go anywhere in Cuba ppl expect tips n are rude if not given

Loved it!

The hotel is a bit old, so don't expect it to be 5 star - it is a good 3 star hotel:) The territory is huge, location is amazing, and the beaches are so beautiful it will hurt your eyes just looking at them. I will defiantly go back many times.

Worth the money resort!

I have been visiting Cuba for 20 years and have stayed in a variety of hotels there. My experience at this resort was pleasurable. The resort was clean, staff were great, food was standard, the grounds are OK and the beach is wonderful. The common areas in the hotel are great and very well staffed. My only complaint would be that the bathroom is very small. I was alone so it was Ok but it would be very small for a couple, eg: a pedestal sink, toilet and shower. My opinion would be that as a [... read more] 3 star it is definitely rated right. This is one of the oldest hotels in Cuba and with a little upgrading it could be made very beautiful again. It is in a nice area of town where one can do lots of walking. I would definitely return there.

Economical but not well managed.

Service in this hotel has deteriorated since our last visit in November 2016. Food is about the same but items are often cold on the buffet counter. In November we had a coffee maker in our villa room and a large and small towel for each of us, four towels in total. On this visit there was no coffee maker in the room and we had only one towel each, a small towel at that. When we asked about towels we were told that they were only supplying one towel now for each person. We go to this hotel twice [... read more] a year because we have many close friends in the surrounding area but we are becoming disappointed lately.

Excellant hotel

Although it is classified as three stars but it is better than four stars. Everything is above and beyond expectation. Such a great deal for economy minded travelers I would not hesitate to my recommend it to my friends.

Gaudilvaca Experience

Overall a great vacation! Beautiful beach and friendly staff. Multiple pools, bars and restaurants to choose from. Renovations and upgrades currently happening to brighten up the different style accommodations. Close to market and water sports available. You won't be dissapointed!

Nice to be Back at Club Amigo

This was the fourth time we have visited Club Amigo but the first time in five years. We met a number of guests who had been there many more times than us. Most of us have formed personal relationships with staff members and this makes for a family atmosphere. There is no doubt that the physical plant at Club Amigo is aging but the setting is to die for. Rest & Relaxation At A Reasonable Price

When comparing Cuban resorts using Trip Central's comparison grid, one of the places that usually show up when looking at value for money is Club Atlantico Amigo. You can get the same amenities and meals as at the more expensive resorts .... if you choose your rooms carefully. Selecting your rooms in the main "hotel" section where you're in the middle of the main action or the older "motel" section won't give you the same experience as a room in the "villas" or the "bungalows". If you watch t [... read more]he comparison grid, you can get a week's vacation all-inclusive in one of the villas or bungalows for less than $1,100. And that's where the value-for-money is if you're on a limited budget and are watching your pennies. Many folks complain about the food at Cuban resorts, principally because they stick to the buffets and haven't discovered the à la carte restaurants. With several hundred people eating at the same time at the buffet, dining can become an unpleasant experience regardless of which resort you stay at. However, it's very easy to enlighten your dining experience, whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner, with the à la carte restaurants, Club Amigo Atlantico was one of the first of the Cuban resorts to open to tourists. It's often described as being "tired". But it's not so much "tired" as a lack of attention to the small things .... like doors that don't open all the way (something simple to fix), or diverter valves on the showers that don't work, or sidewalks with chunks missing that could be easily fixed, or handrails that need to be replaced along the shoreline..... it's a lack of attention to detail on the part of housekeeping and maintenance management that tends to give Club Amigo the 3 stars instead of the 4 stars. Other than that, if you're looking for value-for-money on a limited budget, and you keep your eyes open for the villas or the bungalows, it's a good place for your Cuban vacation.

Some Positives Some Negatives

Grounds: The grounds are nice, many places to walk and explore. 4 beaches to choose from. No weeds and nice sand. Bars: Many around the resort. Mojitos only at the pirate beach bar. Best pina coladas at the lobby bar where they will actually use milk in their mix. Ask for the better rums in your drinks otherwise your getting the low end rum. Havana club or Ron Cubay. Public Area: Public areas are well kept. Nice plantings throughout. Nicely painted art on some walls. Rooms: [... read more] Tropical rooms are a bit small, no blackout curtains but they have everything you need. Was in a good location though, first floor not to far from lobby and buffet. Dining: Food is not the greatest. Avoid the Spanish and Cuban restaurants and go for the Mediterranean and Italian restaurants. No one told us, and we never got to try it but they serve roasted pig for lunch at the pool 2 times a week at the main complex which has the tropical rooms. Looked like the best lunch you can get all week. Pig is roasted outside on charcoal. There are 2 buffets to choose from the buffet close to the evening stage has great roasted pig for dinner, is quieter with live music but a bit less food selection than the buffet at the main complex. Evening shows: They had 2 good shows out of the 7nights. One was a dancing show the other was a show in the water. Service: It was ok but could have been better. Bartenders could have served faster rather talking among each other or doing something rather than serving. We asked that our room not be cleaned for the week to save them on cleaning yet it took us 3 times and 3 different ppl to tell before they finally got it. The wait staff was good at the buffets and restaurants. They have a lot of servers at the bars and shows which is a plus. Tours: Don't take the bus trip into Holguin for 15cuc that the hotel provides. It's a rip off, Its should be a free shuttle or 5cuc at the most, nothing to see there. Your better off spending your money on an official tour. Also, seeing how bad of a shape the country looks outside the resort is hard. Majority of ppl live in poverty and the infrastructure is falling apart. Talking to some locals, the communist government does not give them enough to live and some are forced to steal to survive. Their wage is 1.30 canadian a day. I'm boycotting Cuba all together until the government makes some positive changes for it's people, gives them more freedom and more money. Spend your money on another island.

Favourite Resort

Just got back home from spending 7 days at Club Amigo Guardalavaca. This has been my second time at this resort, and it's still my favourite. The beach is beautiful, 4 pool choices, depending if you want a quiet swim, or a friendly get together. The staff are amazing, if you ever go to the lobby bar ask for Eddie. He's amazing, we were regular customers every night, and when he saw us, he had our drinks ordered ,and served them with a smile. The food is what I expect, it is Cuba. They don't have [... read more] ingredients and spices like we do in Canada, but I must say, they try their best to please everyone. If you ever go to Panchitos Buffet in Standard Section, ask for Miada. She is a wonderful woman who always has a smile on her face. Both myself and my husband love this resort, and we will be back next spring, 2018.
