Brisas Covarrubias: The resort was nice. Good value for the money.
The hotel was ok. Service was a bit wanting. The beach was very nice. Food was ok. The bus ride to the resort is quite long, over 2 hours, but interesting as it passes through a couple small towns and some rural areas.

The grounds were beautiful. The rooms great. The people very friendly and helpful and a pleasure to deal with. The meals were fine, you could always find something to eat. The service by the wait staff and the people who prepared the food was wonderful. We had a great vacation. The bus ride was just right and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. We met and correspond with Jondi and Dani from the blau resort.

Playa Pesquero: Awesome Value
We had a wonderful time at the Playa Pesquero in Holguin. As a former travel agent, I can honestly say it is really good value. I recommend this for small families, young adults (bunch of friends, or young couples), or anyone on a budget. It's fun, cheap and cheerful.
Here's the scoop:
- Rooms - really outdated, but fine. Mini fridge in the room stocked with water, beer, pop and juice. The Jr suites are much better than standard rooms and we upgraded once we got there. I hear the Premium is fan[... read more]tastic.
- Beach - Glorious!! Crystal clear blue water, some good snorkelling you can easily swim to straight from the beach (bring a bun of bread to see fish swarm you - pretty cool!), soft white sand. Water is very calm and great for little children as it is a gradual drop to deeper sea. This is my kinda beach, it has beautiful trees scattered and has two coves. Long enough to walk it and feel like you've had a proper walk, and pretty scenery.
- Pool - One of the prettiest meandering pools I've ever seen. Beautifully landscaped and very large. Great for children as there are LOTS of shallow spots. Good amount of shade for both pool and beach. Yes, you still need to reserve your spot with towels, but we never had a problem getting loungers in the shade.
- Food - I was pleasantly surprised for Cuba the food was good. Lots of variety. Could have had lobster every night if I wanted. Great calamari and seafood options. For those who don't eat fish, lots of alternate options. Fruit was great. Wish there were better veggie options though. Fresh fruit juices were yummy. Alcoholic drinks were hit or miss. Not made to our standards in North America for taste, but whatev's, I always found something I liked. Mohitos are good in the lobby bar. We also loved the icecream parlour and the beer garden. Had good experiences at both the buffet and the a la cartes.
- Vibe / Entertainment - very good!!! They have a fantastic Cuban band who totally rocked. LOVE Cuban music. Cubans and their passion of the arts in general really makes my holiday every visit. There was a great pool party one evening complete with synchronized swimming, a rocking beach party one night, awesome acrobatics, the lobby was buzzing each evening.
- Grounds - Large. Bring a stroller definitely if travelling with a toddler. I was a bit disappointed with the looks though... there are large empty spaces of arid land on this property. They were experiencing a drought too so the grass was burnt. But the landscaping around the pool and closer to restaurants etc were nice.
- Tipping - goes a long way, as it always does in Cuba. It's appreciated and you do get better service for it.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Fun resort
My husband and I booked Club Amigo last minute and got an AMAZING deal! We were a little concerned about staying at a three star resort as we had only stayed at four star resorts previously. We went with no expectations and we're very pleasantly surprised! Upon arrival check in was very fast and efficient and friendly. The room was a little old and shabby, but was clean and functional. There were no towels when we arrived but the cleaner arrived within minutes with fresh towels for us. On day tw[... read more]o we asked to move to an upper level room just out of personal preference and we were happily accommodated.
The things that make the resort less than 4star are the wonky air conditioner that turned on and off in the night and beeped intermittently, even when it was turned off, the three days that the hot water ran out and we had to have cold showers, the mismatched slightly stained towels (they we're clean enough), and the buffets which had very little selection and no outdoor tables (breakfast at Benny's, lunch at the snack bar, and dinner at the a la cart restaurants were all good).
The beach is fabulous and had lots of beach chairs. (A towel on the sand is great too)! The snorkelling out on the reef is good. We took out a paddle boat and took turns snorkelling off the paddle boat. Or swim out from the pirate beach and go toward the Brisas resort.
The bars are plentiful, so bring your babba keg and enjoy the party!

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Club Amigo April 2015
I was extremely pleased with my vacation. First time to Cuba and I was a bit skeptical. Had perfect weather which was a bonus. Everything went well. Good flight. Bus trip and the guide to the resort were very interesting. Resort itself was impressive, nicely spread out and not all packed into a high rise. I had concerns about how the food would be but was very pleased. I've been to a fair number of islands and Mexico. The food was a good or better than the places I've been. Staff at the resort w[... read more]ere excellent. Lot of fun.

Playa Pesquero: Very good resort
Rooms were big and very clean, everything worked well including great water pressure in shower. Nice balconies.
1 very large pool - seemed to have a quieter side one side of bridge, a little more lively on the swim up bar side. Very clean.
Beach had great sand, long shallow walk out to deeper water, with some rock outcroppings at one end for some good snorkelling.
Used the paddleboats and the Hobie Cat, both in great condition.
Food was mostly good, ate at 3 a la carte's - Seafood restaurant dow[... read more]n by the beach was best. Also like the little pizza place beside it. Good burgers and dogs at the cafe by the pool. Buffets were good, if nothing else lots of choices and lots of seafood. Food at the Beer Garden - tapas - was not good except for the fries.
They roast pigs on Caribbean day in the boulevard - best thing I ate there.
Loved the mojito's at the Mojito bar.
Very nice lobby - great coffee bar.
Extremely friendly staff.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Very nice resort
This resort was very busy when we went for the two weeks, however, we enjoyed the hotel, the grounds and the food, our excursions were very nice and the beach was exceptional. I went scuba diving and it was a wonderfull experience diving in tropical waters. the drinks were cold and amazing, the cappuccinos were hot and the beach was clean and very nice. Sol Turquesa Beach: Another Wonderful Blue Sky Holiday!
My husband and I recently returned from Memories Holguin. We were there for a too short 7 days.We stayed from April3-10/2015. Being our 5th time to this lovely resort, we knew what to expect, in terms of room location, food, the Many stairs, (87) , the lovely staff. But what we did not expect was the Great job, that Memories has been doing since taking over, a few short months ago!.This is a beautiful resort, that has so much to offer, from the lovely pools, the lush, tropical grounds, the lovely b[... read more]each.....(Those beaches are what I see, when I dream!).. We enjoyed all of the pools, and were happy to notice that they are all being used, cleaned daily, with shade provided and chairs, (our last visit, they were not using them all, some were left drained). The food quality has vastly improved, there was always fresh fruit, bacon, eggs, breads, child-friendly options, fish, shell-fish, various meats, salad options, condiments, the list goes on! The staff were exceptional, kind, and helpful, always with those glorious smiles!.The new manager, Jesus, is very present, and always willing to stop and talk, the staff all seem to be thriving under the new managemen .As repeat guests , we were treated to a lovely room, in bungalow #5, as I had requested. The room was kept clean, we always had fresh towels, and our fridge restocked, with water, pop and beer. The Repeat Guest Dinner, was an honor to attend .Best one, ever, in all of our trips to Cuba,( we have been 19 times!) Sitting in the pool, with white linen, red napkins, roses, being entertained, by a lovely quartet of singers, all while your feet are in the lovely water, was so awesome! The ladies were presented with single roses, the men with a cigar. Such a lovely evening! Such a lovely week! I will return to this Resort, without any hesitation , and I will certainly be returning to Lovely Cuba, That magical, slice of Heaven, that makes My soul sing, each and every time.I feel very honored and fortunate, to be able to travel, and I look forward to my next adventure! Gracious! Memories Holguin. Thank You! Nathan Donaldson, @ Trip Central.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Great place for 3 stars
We had an awesome trip.. For a 3 star resort is was great!! I would definitely recommend going here. Reasonably priced and lots to do. The food is plentiful but not overly creative but this seems to be the normal in Cuba. Staff was friendly and helpful. Always something to do. Nightly entertainment was terrific! No trouble with water or plumbing. Beds are not the most comfortable but were clean and lump free. If you want fairly quiet are choose the Villa section. If you want close to the nightly[... read more] activities choose bungalows.. and for the daytime party area stay in the main hotel area. We had a Villa with an ocean view and enjoyed it thoroughly..
Definitely would recommend going here.. Upgrades are being done to the grounds.. Beaches were soft and clean :)

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: nice beach, but horrible resort
Horrible resort, four people in one room, no water, no toilet paper, mould on the walls. The food was bar far the worst i have ever had. I've been to cuba many times and was expecting sub par food but this was the worst. The bars had no ice, cola, vodka and i witnessed them watering down their alcohol.

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Great Family Resort
This hotel is very family oriented not good for young singles. The grounds are well maintained. We stayed on the Plus side and the room was very standard. The food is basic but found they use a large amount of oil in most dishes. Did not enjoy the red win at all, however the Spanish coffee was very good. The beach is very rocky, and you will need water shoes, bring snorkeling gear as it very good in this area. I also found that the hotel did not have a list of any activities for the week. We fou[... read more]nd things out on the last day that we would have attended. The entertainment in the evening was for children. Overall I would rate this resort as a 3, and would only recommend it to families who are on a strict budget. We spent most nights in our room by 9 because it was very boring.

Don Lino Hotel: Okay, but I wouldn't go back
First, let me say that I've been to Cuba several times, so I know what to expect at these lower rated hotels. This one was a disappointment.
The amenities were limited. I saw no sign of the advertised "non motorized water sports" unless they meant the pool. Of the seven nights I was there, there was nightly entertainment four times, and it was hit or miss as to where and when to find it. There really were no excursions and our HolaSun rep was hardly there. It made me glad I've visited Holguin be[... read more]fore and seen the sights, I would have been very upset had it been my first trip to the area as I like to explore and see the cities and sights.
The reception desk is there 24 hours as advertised, but it is not staffed, so you can't book anything or try to reach your rep or ask for a wake up call...and it's a long walk every time to see if someone happens to be there.
The a la Carte: I had to wait for over an hour at reception to book it while they were all over the place looking for the book. The soup was really good but oil with my lobster was a bit disappointing (read on...no butter all week).
The Superior Bungalow wasn't: Both telephone and television were pure static, only. The fridge didn't work (glad I didn't need to store medication) and the plumbing leaked constantly so there was always water on the floor. I was one of the lucky ones without bees in and about the room so I stayed put and made do. I stayed in 1098. On the plus side, the a/c worked, the safe was included and worked and the bed was comfortable. There were a few other guests commenting that they had to share keys; I was solo, so not an issue, but if travelling together, sharing one key has its issues.
The beach is beautiful with plenty of loungers and palapas any time of day - probably due to the constant high winds blowing in from the ocean. Fortunately, the sand is coarse enough that it doesn't get blown around (rather remarkable really). Lots of shells and coral for those who like to beachcomb and lots of easily spotted sea life within feet of shore: urchins, sand dollars, crabs, and some weird looking things I still can't identify :-)
There is no break from the wind except inside your room and inside the buffet, everything else is open and gets the full wind (not breeze) coming in from the ocean - there is no reprieve from it. At least it was warm and it didn't carry the sand.
The water: Well, even with water shoes, the high winds made rough seas and once you get past the initial reef, you don't really get that nice sand bottom, it's still scattered with rocks so watch your ankles! Snorkelling would have been really good here but I felt the water was too rough all week to do so.
The food: There was always something, but it was very repetitive and they put green peppers in or on just about everything (I'm allergic to them). There was no butter or margarine all week and oddly, not a single banana. As for the service, well, I'd say it was severely lacking. Partially set tables left us hunting for spoons and glassware, fetching our own water and even getting my own wine. The wait staff were very friendly, perhaps they were understaffed, but it didn't seem so.
The store had no bottled water all week and limited selection of goods.
Many of the guests at this resort were return visitors and they rave about the place, but for us first timers, why would we return when there were so many issues?
It WOULD be a good place for a week of R&R with a book, but other than that, unfortunately, I can't really recommend it though I am rating it fair to good. I was VERY glad that I was travelling with others this time.
