We just spent two weeks at this resort. We had an amazing time.
The food was great, the animation team (Brian, Gustavo, Memo, Janet, Lizbeth, Anya ) was exceptional. Everybody went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect.
We would recommend this resort to everybody.

Riu Palace Costa Rica: Much need of repair
This is the 4th time we've been to this resort. It's been one of our favourite places to go to relax and enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica. The resort is closing down in August for 6 month for renovations and they have let a lot go.
Our first room was a maintenance nightmare, closet doors wouldn't close the main door to the room and sliding glass doors wouldn't lock. The fan made a terrible noise and the sink backed up with water. There was a lot of wear and tear in the room. The manager moved us[... read more] to a different room, we still had a few issues there but it was much better than the first room. It's unfortunate that RIU allowed the resort to get so run down. We spoke with people that had been there for the first time and they have no intention of going back.
Food was not the same.
The RIU Guanacaste has been completely redone and looks fabulous. But it's huge there must be over a 1,000 rooms, plus they've added a Water Sports Centre with a lot of jet skis..which makes for a busy noisy beach.

Riu Republica: Good budget resort
We had a good time at the Riu Republica last week. Airport transfer took a while because there were so many drop offs and we only got to our Riu after almost 2 hours. Check in was pretty quick. However I’d like to point out that we were sharing a room with our daughter( 3 people) and the check in guy said they only had twin beds and those would be really small and cramped!! He suckered us into paying an extra US 130 for a king and single!! Totally our fault for falling for this and not trying to[... read more] check the room first!! Anyway just a heads up in case anyone else is in the same situation. The beds are big enough for 2. Room could need upgrades but when our AC leaked they came promptly to fix it. Bar was always full, room was cleaned, but sheets need to be changed. We were there for a week!! No complaints about the food or restaurants. Jerk hut was amazing!! Beach was great and we were very lucky to experience sargassum(mildly) on just one day. Pools were good, water park a lot of fun and service all round was very good. Staff were friendly and polite.

Riu Negril: Riu Club Negril Review: Fast Check-In, Great Food & an Amazing Trip!
Recently stayed at Riu Club Negril for 7 days and had a fantastic experience overall. The resort was beautiful, very clean, and the service was excellent. Check-in was the fastest and most efficient we’ve experienced compared to resorts in the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
Our room was in Villa 2 on the second floor with a full beach and ocean view. It was clean, spacious, featured modern furnishings, and had a VERY comfortable king-sized bed. The food was great with plenty of variety and n[... read more]o shortages. Everything we tried was delicious, and the steakhouse was excellent both times we visited. The grilled jerk chicken and taco spot near the main pool are absolute must-tries. We aren’t really pool-lounger people, so we spent every day at the beach. Bob’s Bar was AMAZING! Drink service was quick throughout the trip, and every server was fantastic. The beach was kept very clean. My only suggestion would be more frequent raking to help reduce sand fleas.
Booking with Captain Charlie and his team (Luke) was easily the best excursion decision we made. Although not affiliated with the resort, he honestly should be. Safety was clearly a top priority throughout the experience. He picked us up directly from the beach near the Scuba Caribe hut on a glass-bottom boat. We started with open-water snorkeling, with gear and life jackets provided, then visited caves before heading to Seven Mile Beach where we had time to walk, swim, and relax with loungers and an umbrella. We finished at Rick’s Café to watch the sunset before returning to Riu. Keep in mind that food, beach loungers, umbrellas, and drinks purchased away from the resort were at our own expense, so bring extra cash.
Another important tip: bring bug spray with a high DEET content for evenings both on and off the resort. Natural bug spray doesn’t cut it, fair warning.
Overall, we had an amazing trip and would absolutely return.

Riu Latino: AVERAGE AT BEST
This resort is average at best. It is newer and quite clean. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was prepared nicely and the housekeeping staff always did something special for us. We weren't satisfied with the view even though we paid extra for Ocean View. The view is mainly of the courtyard. To see any of the ocean, you need to go onto your balcony. The air conditioning was very loud and made it difficult to have a restful nights sleep.
The food was average and the same al[... read more]most everyday. We didn't go hungry at all. There was a bounty of food and options but limited gluten free. Kulinarium restaurant was not good at all and the power went out for 30 minutes while we were dining there. They asked us to leave without serving us our dinner so we left and then the power came back on so we returned to the restaurant but the staff didn't seem to be so happy. We were not impressed with the meal. The steakhouse was the second worst of the restaurants. It was way too bright and loud inside. The ribeye steak was all fat. The Asian restaurant was a buffet style and we ranked it third worst. We enjoyed our meal at the Milan Italian restaurant and we went back a second time. We never went back to any of the other restaurants. The buffet was a somewhat better option than the restaurants. We enjoyed the lobby bar before our dinners but the mosquitos were terrible at night and made it hard to enjoy a drink or two in the open air lobby.
The pools were decent. We enjoyed our time around one of the quiet pools which is right next to the waterslides. It was much quieter than the other pools which tended to get very loud and rowdy as the day progressed. We went down the waterslides once during our stay. It is something different that other resorts don't have. People seemed to enjoy going on them.
The landscaping is very sparse. The building itself looks very bland. There is zero character. It felt as though we could literally be anywhere. It was so nondescript.
We love going to beaches but not this one. We were charged a beach cleaning fee when checking into the resort that we had to pay by credit card. There was tons of seaweed which they tried to keep cleaning but it just kept accumulating. The tractor would pass by all the time and we would smell the strong gas which polluted the air. Walking from the building to the beach was difficult as we had to walk a very long way through deep soft sand. There were no washrooms by the beach. The ocean had lots of seaweed and actual human feces on more than one occasion. It was so bad that we stopped going to the beach altogether and decided to stay by the pool instead for the rest of our vacation. It was disgusting and shocking...something we have never witnessed before in other resorts in Mexico or anywhere else. We think this Costa Playa Mujeres area has a big problem.
The entertainment was average and typical. Nothing really stood out to us.
The type of guests at this resort ranged from late teens to elderly but the majority was a younger crowd who liked to party and get wasted. We felt it was very ghetto and trashy at times. We observed many incidents of people getting completely intoxicated and falling down, passing out, needing medical attention, screaming and yelling, being pushed around on wheelchairs, fighting with staff and even the police had to come one evening to deal with guest/staff fights.
Overall our time at Riu Latino was not worth remembering. We will certainly not be back. There are so many other places to go which are far better Save your money and go elsewhere.

Riu Palace Tropical Bay: First time at a Riu
This was my first time staying at a Riu and I would recommend this resort. I’d give the location top marks. Situated in Bloody Bay, this little cove north of Seven Mile Beach was perfect. With only 5 resorts, it was peaceful and the beach and ocean were the best I’ve been to in a while since there was very little sargassum. My only complaint would be the lack of shade - you needed to get up early to get a spot under a tree which was the only shade available. Grateful we prefer the beach since th[... read more]e hotel had three small pools side by each that were only 4’ deep. The staff were great and service was top notch. The food in the buffet started off good but by the end of the week the quality wasn’t there and we ended up sticking to the same food for most of the week. We tried only one à la carte, Italian, which was pretty good. The rooms were nice and the grounds were very clean and well maintained. We’d definitely come back!

Riu Ocho Rios: Excellent resort
The rooms were very good. The grounds were immaculately kept. The staff were constantly cleaning, wiping down, etc. Shout out to Gary and the other servers who were very hard working and pleasant. The buffet restaurant was outstanding! In addition to the Jamaican station which was there every day, there was lots of fish and seafood, Italian food, asian food, etc. There was a juice bar, good selection of fruit and extensive salad bar. There were even vegan burgers, and other vegan options like cu[... read more]rried chickpeas, lentils and the best stewed peas I ever had (its stewed red beans), which I ate every day! Thanks to Osheen at the Sports bar who made my special coffee every morning with a smile. The Riu entertainment crew were on fire every day with pool games, excellent exercise classes (shout out to Anna banana), and evening entertainment. Last but not least, kudos to the Riu corporation for its strong sustainability initiatives! The AC was centrally controlled - you could not crank up the AC, but you didn't need to. You could control the fan speed, and that was good enough. There was no disposable plastic - the coffee cups were recycleable (take note Tim Hortons and others!), the other drinks were served in reusable glass or reusable plastic cups. There was a large and long open verandah with lots of couches, tables and chairs, so guests could sit and chill and chat and play board games. There was always a strong breeze blowing to keep it comfortable. I highly recommend this resort!

Riu Latino: Fantastic Resort
Our first time at this resort and we loved it. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. Our room was a good size and the fridge and bar was well stocked. Lots of food choices and plenty of it, you won't go hungry. Bar services were top notch, and they do not water down the drinks. All the pools were great, and we had no trouble in getting a lounge all week. All the staff were top notch. The nightly shows were fantastic. We highly recommend this resort.

Riu Bambu: Nice Resort
We went to the Riu Bambu for the beginning of May. It is a medium sized resort in good condition. There were several a-la-cartes, but we found the buffet was the better place to go. Our group of 5 was made up of older adults, 34, 19 and a 7 year old. We all found the resort to be good. Kids entertainment was okay but did not seem to be to present through the day. It probably was more of a day care. The resort had small kid water parks and a much larger one at associated to the adjacent sister re[... read more]sort. There was also an "off resort" disco which was quite amazing. No charge to go and well guarded / supervised. It had a could of shallow pools, they did the bubble party thing with modern largely international dance music. Definitely drew the younger people from other resorts around the area. It was free to attend and drinks apparently were also free to Bambu clients.
The ocean and beach were awesome. Shade areas available, largely tall palm trees that set a great ambience. The 3 pools were good. One was adult only with the swim up bar. Music could become overwhelming and loud there. Some showers for rinsing around the pools did not work.
Food was okay, drinks were the typical syrups and lower end resort alcohol. Staff service we felt was pretty good with most the resort people we dealt with.

Riu Guanacaste: RIU Guanacaste CR
Great resort in Guanacaste province, Costa Rica. Very nice, modern rooms with balconies. Rooms were spotlessly cleaned everyday by hotel staff. On the whole. this was probably the cleanest resort my wife and I have been to and will definitely be returning some day. We really have nothing major to complain about. Fantastic service, food and drinks. The restaurants were all good, except for one in my opinion. The one a la carte I'm referring to is the Mexican restaurant Algave which didn't match t[... read more]he standard of the hotel. I am not alone with this assessment as we noticed that many patrons never stayed very long and many plates of food were hardly touched. Very disappointing to say the least as we had high hopes following dinner at the Steakhouse the night before which was outstanding. The amenities were all very good. The pools, pool bars. lounger availability were all top notch. Nightly entertainment was top notch for both the kids and the adults. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. All in all, a great vacation. We will be back.
