Very nice resort!

Beautifully maintained grounds with lovely rooms and buildings. The buffet was excellent! I would have liked for the beach to have had palapas to provide both sun and shade. Also, some late afternoon entertainment would have been welcome, for those of us who find 9:10pm a little late to venture out. Over all really nice resort with friendly helpful staff.

Great vacation!

We just returned from the occidental after a great week. More pros than cons for sure. This is our second year going there and we have done the royal level each time. Don’t think I would pay the extra next year. Resort was clean, staff very friendly and attentive. Food was good but small restaurant at royal was very slow service and food was cold when served. Buffets offered some selection and hot! Other restaurants were good. Beach was lovely. Water was refreshing. Unfortunately the Jacuzzi poo [... read more]l for royal was not warm even after bringing to their attention. We won’t go back their next year as need to change it up.

Pictures can be deceiving!

We vacationed here as a party of 6 end of April 2023. This hotel is located and surrounded by serene, stunning gardens and forests. Ground keepers do amazing work here. Food in buffet is for the most part well done but at times hard to figure out if it's a theme or not. our group of 6 ate at 3 a la carte. Italian, Seafood, and Mexican. We thoroughly enjoyed all three but requested to re visit the Mexican as it was the best in ambiance, great staff and great food. ( Thanks goes out to Danny and t [... read more]eam.). All a la carte venues were beautifully decorated. House wines are Spanish and are fairly good. Housekeeping was outstanding both in rooms and public areas. Biggest downside is the beach or lack thereof. Most was washed away during last few Hurricanes. So seating can be crowded at times. Pools are nice but as we are beach people we found ocean to be murky and continually stirred up by the multitude of boats speeding to pick up divers at the pro dive shop adjacent to the hotel. Perfect local for vacationing divers. Other that this issue at the beach this hotel checks almost all boxes. We made best of it and had a great stay here, this our 2nd time.

Worst hotel ever

Should be shut down had no water guests were extremely sick Staff was rude and not helpful we left after one night and booked with another hotel. At our own cost it is very dated and we had to get water from the pool to flush the toilet

SICKNESS AND MISERY FOR ALL

I will not spend a moment on the quality of food or service and go right to the illness that spread through the entire resort. Hardly anybody was spared the misery of violent vomiting and diarrhea almost from day 1. The first day the AC did not work. When it was finally fixed it only went to 25 degrees Celsius and rattled. After 36 hours we left our room but the diarrhea kicked in. I could not find anybody at the resort that wasn’t either currently sick or had just started feeling better. Almost EVERYBODY at the resort got sick. We lived on toast and bananas for 4 days. Nobody wears gloves to handle food but they do wear hairnets. Pretty sure nobody gets sick for a week or two when they find a hair in their food. Very poor hygiene and food safety standards. During the height of the sickness the WATER TO THE ENTIRE RESORT WAS TURNED OFF!!! We were told that it was for maintenance and it would be back on in 20 or 30 minutes. It was off for over 24 hours! We could not flush the toilets. This included the public washrooms. Its bad enough to be sick, now imagine not flushing the toilets OR washing your hands. Dozens of people including myself filled trash cans with pool water to flush toilets all night. Contestants on Survivor had more sanitary living conditions than we did. In the morning there was an angry mob yelling at the assistant manager. The manager was never to be seen. People talked about "Walter" but nobody saw the man. He hid like a coward while his staff got yelled at. Shame on you Walter! The assistant manager told everybody that if we didn't like it at the Occidental we could pack our bags and leave. He said "nobody in making you stay". There are dozens of reviews just like mine on several sites describing the same situation. The management responded to those reviews by saying that this time of year there is "a little gastroenteritis on the island". These guys lie so often it has become effortless. Some of the reps that sold excursions told us this happens all the time and Occidental covers it up so nobody knows. This place needs to stop making excuses, shut down for a few weeks and find the root cause of this illness. As of this evening my wife feels better but my symptoms persist. I have lost 11 pounds since the trip began. I went to the doctor today and he sent my samples away to determine if I got a virus, bacteria, or a parasite. Perhaps a combination of all three. We will know in about 3 days.

Truly awful

When I say everyone was ill, I am not exaggerating. It was clear when we arrived something was going on and sure enough 2 days later we were all sick with fever, vomiting, diarrhea. People throwing up in the bushes, sheets with vomit on them. The poor staff was doing what they could to help while management repeated nothing was happening. The grounds are lovely, rooms spacious and Norovirus or who knows what abound

Sick and Sicker

Breakfast was ok, lunches were hit and miss, and dinners were terrible. Food was tainted and both my wife and I were I’ll and required medical attention which we paid for. Many fellow travellers were ill as well as staff. Definite problems with poor food handling and preparation. Pool area crowded We started with a cancelled Westjet flight and had to book and pay for our own. More to come on our travel problems by way of a separate email.

Great resort

This is a beautiful resort with very well kept grounds.The workers were constantly manicurist the tropical gardens. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The only downside is it is a long walk to the beach and the beach is quite eroded so not much space for beach chairs and shaded areas.

Great week had by all!

Stayed Jan 21-28. All rounded wonderful week. Beaches are limited due to hurricane erosion but found a beautiful spot at the end with lots of shade and sun options. Bar Service on the beach was great and enjoyed the daily pool aquifit with Axel. Treated ourselves to a Royal level package and really enjoyed the upgrade. Private dining room was especially delightful for breakfast as well as a couple of international dinners. Spoiled our group of 8 with a beautiful show in preparing bananas flam [... read more]bé and Mayan coffees. Reservations for the entire week at dinning rooms with Mediterranean being our favourite. Will definitely keep this resort on list of return options❤️

If you go upgrade to the Royal level

The resort is beautiful and clean with a very friendly staff. If you go upgrade to the Royal level. With it you get a larger room, in a private off the main path setting, your own hot tub pool and a restaurant that you can use for all three meals if you wish. Royal allows you to also book in all the other restaurants. We were greeted with a bottle of wine in our room and a bowl of fresh fruit. The majority of people were 40+ in age (although there were younger people and families) and was v [... read more]ery quiet at night. We never had a problem getting chairs at the beach or the pools. Restaurant meals were leisurely and not rushed and we were offered specialty desserts and coffees to top them off. Would definitely return.

Very disappointed

Occidental changed and for the worse. The service is awful, nobody made us feel special there whatsoever. They had a clear lack of food and the resort generally felt badly taken care of (insects in the rooms, damp beds from humidity that the ACS just aren't able to keep up with) We weren't even greeted with a welcome drink, and asked a passer by if we could get.some drinks, the drinks came in plastic cups...you can tell a lot by the first drink. We would have stayed there despite all this has we been able to book scuba trips, but even that was "fully booked and nothing they could do" We changed to a different resort. A WestJet rep helped us, but not Kevin, it was a 3rd party rep that helped over the phone and had us transferred for an additional $200. We were satisfied with the other resort, it was a lot better and a lot more positive in general. So all in all - I learned a lesson. Not going to use West jet again...they don't even include a piece of luggage on the plane, not much is offered and they pricing is pretty high. I may as well have gone to Cuba with the experience I had. Sorry, but this is the honest opinion. Hope you improve

Wonderful Resort

This was our second time and never disappoints. Beautiful beach, very clean, super friendly, lots of food options. Our westjet rep was great and helped us with a tour to the Tequila Factory. Upon arrival our room was ready.

Wonderful resort & staff!

A wonderful smaller, intimate resort with lots of lush green plants and trees making for a calming and serene environment. All of the staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, especially the a la carte restaurants. The rooms, pool, restaurants, bathrooms were always spotless and covid protocols were always in place which was reassuring. Beach & pool area was beautiful and well maintained.

Beautiful resort!!

The grounds were beautiful with lush gardens and trees!! Beach was clean but disappointed in the ocean rocks and constant waves!! No swim up pool but clean and cold lol Food was good but buffets very small and not a lot of variety!! Services was great especially Carlos and Rayana!!! Rooms were clean and gorgeous!! Overall had an amazing trip and highly recommended!!

Very Relaxing Resort

Rooms very clean and spacious. Grounds well kept. short walk to all areas, pools lobby and ocean. Buffets are a tad small. Staff gave very good service. Ocean a bit rocky going in. Not much going on for entertainment at night.

Occidental Cozumel Dind Not Dissapoint

The grounds wear beautifully landscaped and well cared for. The service and food was excellent, we really enjoyed the lunch buffet at the beach. This resort offers so much for such a very small size.

Big resort

The grounds were clean but lots of walking to everything. Service not so good . Friendly people . Night life there wasnt much . Food was ok samething everyday. Not much variety . The booze was not strong at all. I give it a 2 out of 10

Good resort - fun but not amazing

grounds and public areas were clean -- food was good but not a lot of variety in the buffets -- rooms were very roomy but always felt damp -- cleaning staff was excellent lots of this to do at the resort and away from the resort we felt comfortable

Super tesort

Beautiful rooms and surroundings. Staff were great. Buffet could use more selection but food was good. I would definately recommend. A la cartel restaurants are good. Beautiful weather and close to shopping
